Aston Martin: why they fell and if they'll rise.

- Aston Martin's fall from grace between 2020 and 2021 has been a very extreme one, but why was that? In this video I try to figure out the answer to that question, as well as asking when, of if, they'll get back to that 2020 form.
My face is in this video, you have been warned.

One of the people I know really well IRL has just started an F1 meme channel, so I thought I'd do him a favour and shout it out! He's only made one video so far, but he's put a ton of effort into it and would love to get to 100 subscribers by the end of the year. If you enjoy content from legends such as Dacha44 and Gross Jean, then I highly recommend you subscribe to him as well!

Also, if you're a new F1 RUclipsr who wants a shoutout, send me a DM on either Instagram or Twitter and I'll try and help you out - if I get la few messages I might make these pinned comment shoutouts a regular thing, just like Tommo F1 does. And even if you're not an F1 RUclipsr (yet!), let me know in the comments if this is something you'd like to see from my end.
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to scroll through the comment section :)
Lol, only 100000 by the end of the year?? Oh, he's so modest.
I rate your generosity, but there are like 50 f1 memes channel, i think is not fair to just make a shout out to only one of them. I reckon you should promote all of them or not promote anyone.
@@hugofernandez3845 It's for his friend, he can't shout out everyone. And besides, he may think that his audience would like this content more than other meme channel's, it may not be fair but that's life, some people will naturally get promoted more, whether it's by shoutouts or the holy algorithm.
He's really good - get him to make some more!
You look like Max Verstappen's younger brother: Min Verstappen
This^
It really was shocking to see the resemblance
I genuinely thought it was max at first glance
"MIN VERSTAPEN" 😂
MIN Verstappen cracked me hard
Now i have to dry my phone as i spilled water on it :|
Why’d they fall? regulation change
Will they rise? depends on the regulation change
Moral of the story: Aston Martin does not like regulation changes
But will they like regulation changes next year? This is a deep question
I mean their plan was almost perfect ,Copy Mercedes for 2020 and get P3 then make their own thing for 2021 regs but due to covid the regs shifted to 2022 ,it's bad luck
I think the reason why Racing Force Point India Martin haven’t coped with the rule changes as well as Mercedes isn’t just down to differences in funding and the lead they had over the field. Where Mercedes went through the full R&D, designing their car from absolute scratch, RFPIM have cut some corners by copying Mercedes. By going through everything in minuscule detail with the original car designs, Mercedes will have a big head start in knowing how rule changes will perform better/worse. RFPIM on the other hand, will always be playing catch up, money or no money.
Yep, and every F1 fan could have come to that conclusion on their own, useless vid..
The only way they will rise is to *copy the merce-*
when the IRL footage kicks in, you know he was tired of editing.
Nah, I actually scripted the IRL but and edited it first aha - just couldn’t think of any way to edit it nicely😂
@@JohnWarren IMO it's for the better and a bit more like early RUclips.
According to Force India’s former team principal, the staff at Aston Martin are not motivated at all as they are not allowed to innovate and stroll has forced them to copy the Mercedes and abandon the red bull philosophy they had followed for the previous years. Hence in the previous years even though they had a low budget, they were allowed to develop and often be quite innovative , whereas now they are forced to follow a certain concept which has made them less motivated
I think this is interesting, but they were fine last year, best of the midfield, at the highest they had been up to that point.
Oh wow, I didn’t know this! Damn, feel sorry for the AM staff now haha. Hopefully 2022 will give them some more motivation and a new challenge, or else this video will age like milk😅
@@thecouch4702 I mean if you were a kid, would you be proud getting a high score by copying your classmate? The answer is obvious. There's no glory in copying.
Source . I don’t think they don’t like Lawrence because he saved them will give them a new factory increased the budget to work with
Which doesn't make too much sense, given the fact that it's literally impossible to change rake philosophies due to frozen development.
Absolute scenes as John Warren puts his face in a video 😮
Absolute biblical scenes
I didn’t know he was 10 FML 🤦🏽♂️
@@A.H.M.K he's 16-ish I think
Bruhhhhh I miss all the good ads here in America. I just get beer and ford commercials.
And the old spice ad that uses racing and a “Lewis Hamilton”
@@charlespletzke8311 I only get that on youtube though.
I’d you added guns that’d be the most american thing ever hahah
Get F1 live and no commercials man
Ah yes, from now on we shall call them Force Aston Racing Point Martin India
It’s got a lovely ring to it
Throw in 'mercedes' in the mix.
@@JohnWarren yeah
hello John I'm John how are ya John
"Force Racing Aston India Martin Point, Mercedes"
"Midland Force Spyker Racing Jordan Martin Point India"
They've just been unlucky, they need to focus on 2022 and the new regs, Seb is still a great driver and you only have to look back till 2018 to see that, Lance is finally coming of age and doing well, if they have the car they should do well, and hopefully they can would love to see them do well
Wait, never seen Vettel with so few hair follicles!
He’s already gotten an implant I think
Here's my take on it thus far. (+ theories.)
My theory is that, they either:
1. they just didn't expect a freeze at all and expected to move on to new machinery and hadn't planned for any continued use of these cars beyond 2020.
2. they did expect a freeze but their development plan in that event didn't account for changes to the rear changes to the rear of the car. Which not only would end up wiping out the advantage the low rake cars had on the high rake cars but much of any learnings that may have been done in over last year, for continued use of their current design philosophy.
TLDR; They didn't do any study or they did but just for the wrong class in the end.
Will they come back from this.. eh that's debatable.. Looking at their previous adventure in GP racing as well as the form of all the other teams to don the BRG colours, in F1.. It's not looking good for them.
I mean Mercedes has lost around the same time with the new regulation. I think they understand their car, but since they were not allowed to change the car enough for the new regulation ... - well, a bit unlucky.
Mercedes was just so dominant last years that their pace loss is not as noticeable as it is for Aston Martin in the Midfield
But with new people, much more money, a new factory the future could be very bright. They should just focus on the new regulations.
Honestly, i never quite understood the hype for AM. Everybody was acting as if they'll be winning simply bc of the name change. Even the livery is underwelming
personally I really like the livery but I couldn't agree with the rest of the comment more!
@@JohnWarren i also like the liver, but i expected a bit more. Oh and idk if anyone's noticed but the pink line is very similar to that of the mercedes
The explanation: The team did well with much less money. With the new regulations and the budget cap, Aston Martin could still expand a lot with new people and a new factory while other teams had to reduce their team size. And now they also have Vettel, who has a lot of experience in championship-winning teams.
Of course this doesn't change much with this year, but with the new regulation, Aston Martin has a huge potential.
Agree. They are right around where I expected them to be, especially with Ferrari not being as much of themselves. I think with Vettel coming into a team that knew what they were doing, mixed with the top quality promotion work, might have caused people to expect much more and created so much extra hype that when the stayed around the same, they ended up around the same pace, people thought that it was a failure
@@weissachpassion exactly my thoughts, don't count AM out because of a rocky start to a filler season
Signing Vettel was a great deal even if his performance isn't up there atm cause he brings in sm money and expertise
And he is a project driver at Red bull he was for over 7 years if you could the toro rosso time at Ferrari 5 year and will probably try the same with Aston
I gotta say (when the season is almost over lol) I was suspect when AM announced to go back to racing green but still incorporate the Pink BWT.
I would say they nailed it. Favourite livery this season.
There’s a common recurrence from 2010. If Max were to become WC then AM might become the next Merk, and Seb might win WC from 14-15, 17-20. That 16’ is for Lance btw
i wish
You mentinoning the team's name with different random arrangement with their old names is just gold
As of today looks like Aston Martin might have a rise
Ok hol up why is seb vettel trying to cosplay frank williams with that hair
This aged very well
Ye just because he had 2 podiums on GP where overtaking is hard doesnt mean the car is good like Charles had a 6 place finish at baku with sauber lol
Recommended to me straight after Baku lmao
Thx for saving our time and money 👍🏻
Seb got his first podium with Aston Martin
What are u talking about? He got it with torro Rosso in Monza 2008...
Vettel is looking better and better with every race. Maybe they just need some time to get into the rhythm of this season. Vettel for a title challenge next year? 👀
This aged well, I guess?
this aged really well

Or did it?
You seems to post the video at the right time, but 2 week's later, the video has aged quite well.
Who's here after Baku 2021
Omg dude I still not used to seeing your face you look like a mini max. But love the videos dude keep them coming.
he does look like max
I am sure they will be competitive in 2022
I really like this video. It reminds me of your first videos on the channel, but with a hint of humor.
who knew Max V. had a doppelganger..... excellent channel and detailed info.
The "timely" regulatory change put paid to their strong performances It is not their fault that they are where they are currently.
Great Video John, Knowledgeable, engaging and Fabulous Presentation skills, Keep it up and Good luck to you
maybe they are in it for the long run? in my opinion the grid right now can be divided to 4 groups basically: Top tier (Mercedes and Red Bull), Upper Middle (Ferrari and Mclaren), Middle (Alpine, Alpha Tauri, and Aston Martin),and Lower (Alfa Romeo, Williams, and Haas).
just an idea that popped in my head : what happen if all the teams in F1 are actually on the same level? is it good for the sport? that idea came because i've never see a sport where all the teams has the same chance to win the championship. maybe an interesting video idea?
I've been askin f1 channels for this video a lot of times but finally u did it thanks man
Loved this video! You are so good at explaining and talking about these things.
“So 2022 is looking like their (Aston Martin’s) better shot”
This will either age like milk or like wine.
I hope it ages like wine
great vid and good luck with ur exams
Thank you! Hopefully they go well haha
Can't believe you actually listened to me! Your videos are definitely more enjoyable with a "facecam" ;D
I always listen to good advice (apart from my family haha)! Glad you think so :)
I like your ted talk
"2022 would be a better shot for AM to get race wins" boi this aged like fine wine
I find the point about motivation interesting as I personally know a couple people who work in the team who have said it's lost the spark it once had, rather than being like family it now feels like a dictatorship which, if I'm honest, will only harm them in the long run. I mean come on, look at how well Ferrari and Red Bull are doing versus McLaren and Mercedes respectively
Thank you for saving me time and money dude, you the realest
AM seems to be the one to introduce the z-floor which everyone was too eager to copy exactly because it addresses the reduced downforce problem better. On that grounds, they are ahead in the development of this crucial part. So how was the assumption that AM's car is not competitive reached? I don't think it is a logical assumption.
Should also talk about technical regulations which limit development even if they did it at beginning of year - 2 tokens (maxing out tokens available) for that rear! Also, the racing point wasn't doing so well until Perez in the second half of last year. Ever since they had money problems in 2018, they have lost out - it's such a shame.
Copying a car is easy. Understanding every inch of that car, it's strengths and weaknesses, and what makes it tick is a whole other monster.
They're decent at copying, but shite at understanding.
Do poorly this season -> More simulator time for 2023 car -> Easier to copy and improve on the best car in 2022 . The Force Aston Racing point martin India Master🅱️lan.
This the first time I came across your channel
but certainly not the last
congrats you've eaarnt my subscription
In an alternative universe where the regs hurt high rake cars more than low rake, AM would be fighting RB (and possibly mercedes sometimes)
they are similar to haas in some way, both don't have strong r&d and rely heavily on big teams, they'll only do well if the big team is doing well and not being nerfed. maybe the aston martin's involvement will change this in the next few years
The lower they finish this year, the more cfd and wind tunnel time they get to design next years car. So technically the bad car this year will help them next year. Hopefully.
*edited half the video and said eff it, I'll just record myself"
Ah yes, Force Aston Racing Point Martin India. My favourite team in F1. Or as I like to call it: Farp-Mi
One correction: You said it they couldn't redesign their car to high rake, because of resources.
But actually, they weren't allowed to do so... .
So basically they couldn't change the car enough for the new "small" regulation change.
Also, there was a second regulation change which they didn't approve.
All in all bad luck... . But now its time to looking forward to 2022.
If you create the design you understand how it works, if you copy it, you dont. Mercedes can develop out of the issue. Aston dont understand what's so wrong. So they cant fix it.
Oh, you literally say that lol.
I'm loving the wooden chair!
One word:
Vettel
"the real start will be 2020. Next year is is a whole new car. I think it's fair to say that this will be the first racing point design from scratch, knowing our destiny and future." Lawrence Stroll, on page 66 of the 2019 British grand Prix official race programme
They are in a perfect place like Mercedes were in 2010-13 ,i wont be suprised if nezt season we see Aston,Mclaren,Merc fight for the title, coz the engine freeze will eather A) bring the field closer B) let us with a Merc engine teams dominance till 2025
you look like max verstappen!!
i liked the text editing style in this
BEST F1 RUclipsR
9:40 - hit differently cos i do see aston employees walking to the factory every morning.
If Aston Martin are the Jaguar of the 2020's, then Seb Vettel is starting to increasingly look like Eddie Irvine;
an outgoing Ferrari #2 driver (which he was by 2019 and 2020), joining a team with an outgoing Latino, (Checo in Vettel's case, Rubinhio for Irvine) becoming a manufacturer team for a British marque after taking name rights over from a privateer entry (Jaguar were once Stewart after all).
I think with the teams that have the flexi wings having to revert back Aston will rise up the order and get closer to the McLaren and be comfortably quicker than Alpine & Alpha
AM's engineers actually have some innovative ideas. Daddy Stroll is still obsessed with being Mercedes. No win scenario.
Lol no win 😂
hopefully they do rise. and soon. and fast.
Best option if they can't redo it all within one buget cap they should split it between 2 witch could sacrifice a season but looking at their current form i doubt it
3:40 bro u look max verstappens younger brother going thorugh puberty lmao
great video man
With 2 podiums I think they got some luck pack (well partially)
My man is about 18 with the name of a 45yr old chain smoker
I dont know, but instead of investing in a car next year, lets invest in a table first this year? 👌 Good Video mate.
Reality is most teams are going to spend most of their efforts and money on next year since there is no point spending a lot improving a car that will be radically changed next year.
Mercedes has the technical expertise which Aston Martin doesn't have right now. They have the best engineers like James Allison and Aldo Costa. That's why they clawed their way up. I think Aston Martin will have to wait until 2022 regs and take full advantage of them.
Why they fell: They copied a car they didn't understand and now they are struggling to fix and develop this car because they don't know how Mercedes ended up with it.
If they'll rise: Probably. By copying Mercedes' work they saved themselves a bunch of money by not developing their own car and Force India is known for getting good results in races with less budget than other teams.
They did amazing in Monaco
AM on Podium, 2nd fastest car from 7th fastest car. Mmm
Hi young Max Verstappen
hello
I’m sorry but Merc didn’t ‘hold on’ to their performance. Anytime a laptime difference was shown between this year and last year Merc were always one of the biggest negative changers... they were just so far ahead that they are still up the front and they have the resources to develop the low rake design to survive 2021 before the new regs.
The budget cap is also lowkey stopping midfeild teams from improving lmao
This aged well
The pace of the Aston this year is very similar to last year's Racing Point the only difference here is that the rest of the midfield have improved a lot than Aston Martin
Good video kid... keep going!!!!
Aston Racing force Martin
Ngl you look like max verstappen
If Lawrence Stroll Can't sue the FiA i bet he'll buy FiA
What if, and hear me out, Vettel is what Schumacher was to Mercedes, but to Aston Martin, and he builds them up to the championship winning team and they dominate 🤷♂️
Aged well
Calling Seb's 2021 performance "on an upward swing" is laughable. The reluctance of Seb fans to honestly appraise his driving is unreal.
Rumour has it, prime sponsors JCB supplied aero and suspension to the green team
To think they were going to sue the FIA...
2:00 dat cut tho
John what car you wanna buy ??
Don't forget Cognizant. Depending how deep that partnership goes that worthless mismanaged company can only serve to drag you down with it
You look like max verstappen
The regulations apply to everyone up and down the grid, everyone from Mercedes and their 400 million dollar budget to Haas with their budget of $13.50 and a pack of half eaten chips have to contest under the same regulations and no one has "bad luck" with regulations, if you fall down the order because of said changes, you just haven't designed the best car to fit the regulations.
