I totally agree with you, that’s why almost everything in my house is either thrifted or given to me as hand me downs. Thrifting is my favorite thing to do.

I am retired now but I used to care for elderly people in their homes. Nearly all my furniture and most mirrors, lamps and bits and bobs were given to me by the old people or their relatives. Plus I've lovingly held on to the few things I was able to save from my grandparents apartment in Vienna. They have a craftsmanship that you just couldn't possibly afford today. My mother and grandmother both made their own lace and embroidery. I like to honor their skill and effort by displaying their work. I hope someone who appreciates these things gets them when I die.

I've been watching your videos for almost 2 years, and I have started to love thrifting again. And now, I have a collection of beautiful quilts and cut crystal stuff.
It's lovely when things are repurposed and given a new life in a new home. My issue is falling into a thrift addiction and turning a home into a "thrift" store. I don't mind having a few vintage pieces of art and home decor if they are meaningful. For me I have a hard time cherry picking the very best from a thrift store not because I need it but because I understand its value and its a good buy, that leaves the garbage for people without resources who only have this option to put their house together. I have struggled with "maximizing" because thrifting is so fun and exciting. I am glad that thrifting doesn't have the stigma it did when I was a kid. It is really "cool" for teenagers to thrift now, and it kinda levels the playing field for kids from different economical backgrounds.
This Lady has a great eye for color and style and best part about it....IT"S ALL THRIFTED.....
This is SUCH a fun tour - I remember when you found many of these items, I remember you figuring out the origin of the German cabinet and when you first got the quilt that lovely viewer made you, I remember the first configuration of the side room with the awkwardly angled wall and loved that one AND this new one, and all the videos about the process of decorating the dining room... wow! In every piece, every room - so many fun memories as well as learning new things about them. Thank you!

That idea that we are told what to like by stores and magazines fascinated me, because it's so true. I used to have a friend who would change everything out on an almost yearly basis, which I found shocking. I was brought up to buy things that would last, from clothes to furniture. I like knowing that , for example, the bedroom furniture I have now, I've had for 30 years, and I will have for the rest of my life. It's comforting that the stuff my mum bought for me, I still have, even though she is no longer here.

I get the feeling that you may be excusing yourself for thrifting. Be proud. Thrifting goes back to our basic nature of “hunter gatherer” plus it is a “hell” of a lot of fun. Also remember, all the very best things - like Antiques, vintage, curios, and anthropology - is ALL bartered for and second hand. You are right, you could never afford such things and neither could most snobs who buy everything on credit. Your home is glorious, just like living in a museum of World Eras. Hi from Australia.

I'm hooked on thrifting too. It all started about 7 or 8 years ago. I needed some clothes to wear at a cottage vacation with my son and daughter and their partners. I couldn't find anything I liked in the local retail stores. And there were only a couple of things that caught my eye but I was not willing to pay those big prices. The only option was to try the thrift stores. I got so many things I liked there for cheap and no tax. I've been hooked ever since. After ending a relationship and buying a home on my own I needed to furnish it. I wanted quality furniture. So I kept looking and buying all my furniture at thrift stores and Facebook and second-hand stores. I got everything I needed. And the good thing is if you change your mind you can resell it for the same price you bought it for. You're also not so fussy if something gets a little scratch or dent, it just gives it character. If you have never tried thrifting you don't know what you are missing. It's fun, and environmentally a good thing.

There was 10 of us in a tiny home but Momma filled it with beautiful gifted furniture she reupholster! She prepared delicious meals and hosted a lot of missionaries!
I have two of those French original water colors that you have in your bedroom. Bought them on the closing day of the flea market for $1 ea. I kind of remember where I bought most of my thrifted goods and sometimes the story behind them. Our neighborhood was once home to well traveled individuals. Have a gold Turkish wedding shawl a woman wanted me to have…such a fascinating woman.

I go to thrift stores too. I found a Lazy Boy Recliner 2 years ago. I paid $20. Still in very good condition and very comfortable! Not crazy about the Floral pattern, but it will do for now. I live in Indianapolis, IN. I enjoy watching you and Mike and family.

You all give me so much inspiration, simply for the fact that things that are thrifted or secondhand give so much more Character than new! I have recently bought pieces of furniture more so out of Functionality and Character because it makes more sense!
I was so afraid of mixing color. Youve inspired me this past year. Im taking baby steps.
Since I've discovered thrifting, I really don't like going to normal home decor stores anymore. I mean, if they're fancy they can inspire, but it would be too expensive for me. But still even there, so many modern things look cheaply made compared to what can be found in thrift stores. And all the trends are just repeating what has been a trend before. One can see it with the 'brass like' lamp stands or figurines (which aren't really brass) or the crazing on vases that has been created, that 'vintage' is actually a trend. But the real thing is a lot more beautiful, especially when it's collected and curated over time.
Being patient is definitely key. Also finding the right places to shop. I'm in Europe and we don't have large good wills here and some thriftstores don't have what I want or are becoming more and more expensive. So I really need to search the internet to find out where the good thrift stores are at and search for antique markets and things like that too!

Yes. I buy only old hard woods after my beautiful “new” furniture literally fell apart. I was upset. But then after thrifting and garage sailing I have gorgeous forever furniture!

I am SO Sick of MDF and particle board furniture! I’m in the midst of selling and replacing just about everything in my house made of the stuff, in exchange for hardwood. I want my furniture to last.
@@meh5069 my son's MDF bed fell apart after we moved house a second time. Can you imagine the chagrin? Argh! If it ain't hard wood, it ain't no good!

Megan, I feel like I have a kindred thrift store friend with you! We moved from CA to OH in 2018. The way I learned my way around our community was to learn where all the thrift/antique stores were. LOL Many things in our home has come from things I've found in thrift stores. It's my favorite activity to wander the aisles of a thrift store. Blessings, Janell

It's also rented but i flipt up our own furnuter and bought some second hand that need to be painted. Bussy with that. Just painted our tables. We also have adopted a twin boy and girl. They where the first babys that came to our children home nearly 20 years ago. GBY
