Another tip: Most airlines don't mind if you have a pillow with you. So when I flew back to Switzerland after almost two years in the US and all my bags were gonna be way to heavy, I filled a pillow case with light clothes. Ended up weighing 10lbs, but nobody said anything!

These are great tips! You've said this one in another video I believe but don't get bags that look like everyone else's bags. They're so hard to find if you ever check your luggage or it gets lost.
My tip: If I'm going to/from a cold weather place, I bring my jacket with me as a carry-on and stuff the pockets/sleeves with smaller heavy things, because even if they weigh your carry-on, they won't weigh the jacket you have draped over your arm! I've done this with candles, books, cameras, etc. I've also done this with the "kangaroo pocket" of a hoodie, then turned it the other way around. Works like a charm.

I usually take an extra totebag or drawstring bag which I then use as a hand luggage and possibly check in my luggage (usually I take both on the plane one as a hand luggage and the other as a personal item). People underestimate how much stuff you can put in a tote bag (and they never check).
If I have heavy stuff, I will put it in my personal item as well, because they don't check!
Also sometimes you don't need a personal item but it's so much easier to have all the stuff you want access to handy so a cross body bag works best.
If travelling hand luggage only, take two items- one with the things you need in flight AND don't want to loose (with extra underwear and shirt) and the other with the rest of the stuff. If the plane is full they will check the hand luggage (if it's a backpack, they don't usually look at it!) probably, as it was already near the flight, your bag will not be lost but you'll also have already the items you need in flight in the other bag and don't have to move things around.
If taking two bags or more, make sure that the bags can be worn in different ways! like a shoulder bag, tote bag, back pack or rolling luggage. It's difficult wearing two luggages the same way.
If using a backpack, make use of the straps to make the bag look smaller and to put in any jacket etc on the outside.
Carabiner clips are life saviours to attach things on the outside of the bag!
If using backpack with one main compartment, attach a small flashlight on the inside zip so you can see what's inside in the dark.
This had turned into an essay which I think is out of point so I'll stop

I work at the airport as a check in agent and also a gate agent and yeah there's no way I'm gonna buy that 3 bags hack😂
I know all the tricks of people hiding bags under their clothes or even hide it somewhere else like behind a huge plant or a wall near the counter..
if I'd ever let someone pass with too many carry on bags it's bc I don't really care or bc they were nice

What about items inside jackets? I've seen alot of "luggage jackets" lately. The ones with hidden pockets you stuff full of soft items . I actually started to make myself one, but figured I'd rather pay for checked bag than have to face the embarrassment of having a gate agent tell me that it's not allowed...

    packing travel hacks
    1) the smaller the bag, the better
    2) get a hard case ; more durable and waterproof ( but might be hard to squeeze clothes in it unlike a fabric bag)
    3) a bag in a bag ; put clothes in smaller bag and put small bag in the bigger bag then put everything you buy in the bigger bag when you get there.
    4) a folding / collapsible bag
    5) get a smart bag
    6) use a backpack as a carry on if you need more space
    7) put heavy items in the carry on
    8) put awkward items first
    9) heavy items on the bottom
    10) put shoes in their own bags
    11) roll clothing
    12) use packing cubes
    13) if your packing a hat ,see if you can wear it or put the bottom part of the hat in a empty space and fill the inside of the bag with clothes to keep the shape .fold edges down
    14) be conspicious with underwear (i dont know how to spell the second word)
    15) have a laundry bag for dirty underwear
    16) make sure to measure weight and width of your big items in your bag
    17) bring smaller versions of big tools ( mini hair tools, or mini toiletries )
    18) little bags to put jewelry in then put them in one little bag
    19) make your bag open proof so if you open it things wont fall out

Love your tips (and Dixi jewellery)! If you're flying out of the UK, carry-on liquids specifically need to be in a completely leakproof bag, so unfortunately none of those nicer TSA-approved fabric zipper bags are allowed. I always get my carry-on weighed when flying out of here as well, & have had staff being quite rude to me when it's only just within the size & weight limits - not sure why!

@HeyNadine I have been using my smallest vacuum seal bags (the ones that you can vacuum, or in this case, roll out the air) to store my dirty clothes. At the end of my trip, I just fold up my dirty clothes and roll out the air and it's compact, smell proof, and small in size!

All great tips! One additional trick for hiding your purse when you have 2 carry-on's. (I've done this successfully numerous times). I get a plastic bag from one of the airport shops and put my purse inside. I've never been stopped for it because they assume it's drinks or snacks and it's technically not an "additional bag". ;)

One of the things I do when I travel is make sure I have a day or two's worth of clothing in my smaller carry on. Even though I carry on sometimes they check them at the gate if they run out of space and you still risk losing it. So I try to make sure I have enough to last until the air port finds my luggage or I have a chance to replace. I've never actually had this happen to me personally but my friends have. Safe and happy travels!

  • @heleendeale9857
    @heleendeale9857 8 лет назад +20

Great tips! But be on the look out for thieves!! I want to add that you need to make sure you lock your bag before checking it in, some countries are known for stealing stuff from your luggage. A bag with clips and a secure key works best for me. I have had all my jewellery stolen, so I take as little as possible and keep all valuables on me. If you are going to sleep, put a bag with precious stuff underneath the seat in front of you. They steal stuff on board as well, even water on my last trip! Travel with a jacket with pockets and put your credit card, cash, passport and jewellery in there. In my country you must be extra vigilant, so check out the awareness you should have when travelling certain countries.

Gal I've met along the way clued me into a helpful thing she does in addition to her layering that I need to try but looks a great idea as it reduces bags and spreads weight so your carryon/personal item things aren't all on your back - and are easily reachable!: Wear a light fisherman's vest under your jacket. It hides and it has lots of pockets.

  • @seraphiccandy21

Also, you really dont need to take a seperate laundry bag. Just keep the plastic bag from your first super market trip. Same for the shoes. Just put em in a supermarket bag. Cheaper and more minimalist because when you are done or its dirty you can use the plastic bag over in a bathroom or bedroom trashbin or to collect your rubish when you are on teh go.

As a flight attendant I can assure you that when you pack and bring a zillion carry-ons, it's annoying AF. So many people do this, then the bins get full fast and we are delayed checking a bunch of bags. Not cool. Pack less, bring less.
Some airlines offer free checked bags if you bring it as carry on and offer to check it at the gate.

    • @spicecrop
      @spicecrop 5 лет назад +21

People bring everything on the plane because the fucking airlines charge for checked bags. If the airline wants to make things easier for the flight attendants and gate attendants, then they should go back to how things were. Checked bags included in the ticket , free.

Nadine, could you mention menstral cups? When I discovered them it was like going from a landline to a mobil phone. It saves a lot of space not having to pack hygene items, and trying to find tampons/pads in Nepal is near impossible. And some countries can have dodgy standards on those products.
I've seen Ryan Air and Wizzair weigh even smaller backpacks and catch the hidden bag. Toiletries, buy them when you get there, you can find some cool stuff you wouldn't discover if you already had it. If you are going to a really really poor remote place, then you do need to pack toiletries.

When you are using compression cubes, it's really easy to throw the cubes in and forget about that space. For a long time, I kept throwing the cubes in and leaving those grooves empty. Now I use the grooves for scarves, my flat iron, Havanas, etc.

One thing I noticed when traveling locally within the States is I normally have my carry on suitcase, a backpack around my shoulders, and inside my backpack I take one of small thin bags you can roll up that is great from putting a few books in or clothes in so when I get there I can fill that up to. I have never ever had an issue with having to bags around my shoulders with my 1 carry on suitcase and I end up having pretty much a second suitcase worth of stuff on me.

I recommend investing in a jewelry roll with a few zipper pockets so you can put your necklaces into separate pockets. I use double sided packing cubes from Eagle creek so that I can pack my clean clothes in the breathable side, then move them to the waterproof side as I wear them so that they don't smell up my bag, and stay separated from the clean stuff. This way, I can keep all of my clothes folded/compressed for the journey home, and I don't have to bother with a laundry bag.

I take a compression bag for my laundry. It saves space on the way home so I have more room for any treasures I've purchased on my trip.

Love your videos, but I disagree about a couple things regarding choosing luggage.
I think for the most part, choosing between hard and soft sided luggage is personal preference. Any decent piece of soft sided luggage will be water resistant enough for rain. Unless you anticipate it falling into a river, you should be fine. I prefer soft sided luggage, because I find the outside pockets to be convenient organizers and good for pulling your stuff out at security. They also are bit more flexible when jamming into overhead compartments.
Also, if you are checking luggage hard sided cases can crack when handled roughly. You have to be careful to get a quality case.
As for two wheels versus four, I think four wheels are great for airports and other flat even surfaces, but once on cobblestone, pulling your luggage on two wheels is easier. I often see people with four wheels dragging them on two through cities and subways, and they just aren't designed to be pulled well that way. If you pack light having four wheels in an airport won't make much difference anyway.
Again, because the four wheels jut out and aren't tucked in, like two wheels, they can break if you check them. It's important to get a higher quality bag. The nicer bags also push better.
I will say, I think hard sided cases are a bit more spacious. The shell eats up very little volume and on average I think they're a bit wider. They also tend to have more internal organization and are less likely to topple over.

****If travelling in Europe.***Ryanair can and WILL weigh your backpack!! I. Fact they almost ALWAYS do because they want to stick you with fees. Plus make sure that you check the airline restrictions. Ryanair only allow a small personal bag (handbag) with your carry on.

The reason why they charge for checked bags is bc the account for a passenger with an average weight of a person plus a carry on.... but they account for the weight of a piece of luggage by adding fuel... weight=fuel=money... so they charge more.

When I was in the Army, I used 1/2 gallon ZipLoc freezer bags, to pack my underwear in. You could roll up a t-shirt, a pair of shorts and a pair of socks and fit them all into one bag. Then squeeze it tight and zip it closed. You now have vacuum packed undies, which take up even less space. When you change, roll up the dirty ones and vacuum pack them too. The plastic bags keep your clothes dry inside your rucksack, keep the smells to a minimum and you can see what is inside each bag.
Back with a quick edit; the freezer bags are also useful for storing electronics like smartphones, tablets and cameras. Being water tight and air tight, they protect against dust and moisture, up to total immersion.
Use the heavier, more durable freezer bags, not the light weight sandwich bags.

Vacuum space saver bags. It sucks the air out to save space as long as you have a vacuum available at your destination. Also I ship things that cant fit or cant fly. Sometimes its cheaper than an extra bag.

You tubers are either supposed to mention if a video is sponsored in the video or in the description. I don't believe this is sponsored; the "save 40%" in the description takes you to a "Refer a friend" page.
Honestly, the smart luggage is only practical if you carry valuables frequently when travelling and travel often. For the rest of us who travel once or twice a year, probably not.
