Jim Stafford and Roger Miller are two of the lyrical genius giants of 60’s and 70’s country. Both men talented beyond measure and I think that gets lost upon lots of folks due to the humor of their tunes.
@@harrychristian1547 at the time I posted that comment RUclips didn’t allow edits on comments and I didn’t realize I’d made a typo. Also I’m not sure what your issue is with gay folk. In Kentucky we don’t allow hate in our hollers bud.
I saw Jim in Branson, MO. about 20 years ago. He didn't sing "My Girl Bill" or "Wildwood Weed" unfortunately. I think he wanted to keep it a "family" type show. But the show was very funny & everyone got to shake hands & take photos with him after the show. JIM STAFFORD, YOU'RE GREAT!!!!!
He probably didn't sing it because you cant poke fun at anything these days because of this political correctness nonsense. Just the beginning of the socialist takeover of this country and the loss of free speech. Political correct speech is the beginning. Just around the corner it will be made illegal to preach certain things from the bible because it goes against our "progressive" culture! Next you will not be able to speak out openly against the government! Wake up America, we are heading toward communism!
Wow, a great memory from 1974. My Girl Bill charted well here in Australia and created quite a stir when it first hit the airwaves. I remember speaking about it at school in hushed tones, lol. Yes, good ole punctuation. Reminds me of a Benny Hill sketch of two lovers in bed rehearsing a scene for a TV director played by Benny. The woman is groping beneath the covers and says "What's this thing called, love?" The director yells out cut and rushes onto set with the script and says "It's "What's this thing called love?""
This song was a staple of The Doctor Demento Show way back in the 70s in the days when people would sit around listening to radio programs as a popular alternative to watching TV. "He's got the cutest little dinghy in the Navy" was another of his favorites. What a hoot he was.
Absolutely love this song. I remember when it came out we were like, wait, what???!!! Then the punch line came. Jim Stafford looks like he was fighting to keep a straight face and then just gave up.
i miss the 70's an even the 80's .i'd give near anything to take my family an go back an live there. music was fun heck we didnt know how great we had it. thanks Mr. Stafford for so much fun . and thanx for posting this video.
Brilliant song and cleverly performed with the facial expressions. Loved the way Jim got the chuckles near the end of the second verse. What a slick performer! Thanks a million for posting this, I've watched it a few times now and it still makes me laugh.
I've always enjoyed watching Jim Stafford sing, because he always seemed so comical. It was more than just good music. I smile when I think of him and his music.
Great memories of Bob Collins from WGN radio in Chicago playing this song on his afternoon show. That was the first time I hear it. Cow Pattie too! RIP Bob Collins. You are missed.
People think, that punctuation doesn't matter! People think that punctuation doesn't matter? Always loved this song. I remember the first time we heard this my mum got really worked up at the "who we love & why we love" bit. I roared with laughter at the punchline, she just went bright red ! Thank you for uploading this x x
Love this song, first time I heard it as I walked through the room doing chores and did a double take at the radio. When he got to the punch line, I did belly laugh.
On this day in 1974 {July 6th} Jim Stafford performed "My Girl Bill" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand.... Three months earlier on April 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #12 and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100 chart... It reached #7 in Canada and #64 on Billboard's Country chart... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...
Boy that song would take on a whole new meaning now. I miss those days. And I don't care what anyone thinks about me missing the women were women and men were need days. I do.
My favorite Jim Stafford song . I'm surprised it took people a while to figure out he was singing this TO his friend named Bill , not his girl named Bill 😄
This song is just Brilliant - the Melody's GREAT, the Lyrics are AWESOME - and Jim Stafford has a play on the words - which makes most People totally misunderstand about who he's having an affair with until the very last sentence..... Just Genius and very funny!
They wouldn't let, as I recall, our junior high "D.J." play this during lunch...it caused a stir in my hometown (Springfield, MO) even though some of us got the humor. Interestingly, Jim Stafford is a part-time resident of Branson two counties south - great guy, great showman. Love how he does this all by himself in an era when some still would lip synch to "canned" music. This man is greatness...the album this came of ("Jim Stafford", catchy title) was, too.
Haven't heard this song in ages but I remember when it came out. The title should read , *My Girl, Bill*. Indeed, a single comma can make all the difference in the world.
On this day in 1974 {July 6th} Jim Stafford performed "My Girl Bill" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at position #45 on Billboard's Hot Top Hot 100 Singles chart, five weeks earlier it had peaked at #12 {for 2 weeks} and it spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100... It reached #7 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart and #20 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Between 1973 and 1977 the Winter Haven, Florida native had eight records on the Top 100 singles chart, two made the Top 10, "Spiders and Snakes" {#3 in 1974} and "Wildwood Weed" {#7 in 1974}... And from the 'For What It's Worth' department; in 1981 he released a song titled "Cow Patti", it peaked at #102 on Billboard's Bubbling Under the Top 100 chart, and of course it's available on You Tube... James Wayne Stafford will celebrate his 76th birthday this coming January 16th, 2020...
I was driving down the street in San Antonio going to work at Ft. Sam when I heard this for the first time on the radio. Obviously other people were listening as well, since we were all looking at each other while driving. Almost had a multiple car accident....... :)
Yes. It is called humour. I liked the twist in the tail. It came out (no pun intended) at a time when there was a real shock value. My goodness this guy is singing about 2 guys in love. Now it would not turn a hair, unless among the very easily shocked.
I loved listening to this song when I was a kid, it always made me smile. Why did it make me smile? Because it was one of those songs where I could be myself through most of the thing and then at the very last minute go "Ha, I got you bitches!"
At first listen, you would believe that this song is about a homosexual love affair, but listen more closely, & you come to realize that this song is REALLY about 2 men who are in love with the same woman!!!
I'll be 75 in a few days and hearing Jim Stafford sing this song brings back many good memories from back in the mid-seventies.
Jim Stafford and Roger Miller are two of the lyrical genius giants of 60’s and 70’s country. Both men talented beyond measure and I think that gets lost upon lots of folks due to the humor of their tunes.
AGREE!!!!
Agreed. I stick ray stevens in that category too
TRUE!!
William Jenner puts a whole new twist on this tune. LOL

This is such a fun song......... because someone hearing it for the first time is getting awfully nervous as the story builds.
😂😂😂😂for real!!!

In English class our teacher showed us this song and ever since then it's been stuck in my head!
Very clever lyrics.
This is a tough song to sing live. Takes balls because it’s not just a song, it’s a comedy bit, and not everyone can tell that right away
Jim hit #12 in Billboard, 6-1-74. God bless ya, for postin' Thanx! Cheers, Britons.

One of the funniest songs of all time. Thanks Jim Stafford! Love it.
finally, a fellow Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College alumnus makes it big. That's a load off my mind. That was one funny dude, good times.
I remember this performance, I bought the single. Looking back it's so brave to do this as he could have some sort of backing.
Haven't heard this for decades. Thanks for posting.

A song understood in meaning by a simple comma.
* A bizarre top 40 tune indeed! ♣
My wife pointed out that it would need a comma either way. 😳
