He's playing without a strap, that's not easy to do, he's a true master he does amazing guitar playing. It's sad that we don't have entertainers like this anymore that I know of that can do comedy and music and pull it off brilliantly.. He's also great classical player. God Bless You Jim.
Tim Minchin. Musical comedy, clever as hell, too irreverent for some folks' tastes. I only discovered him a few years ago. Funniest stuff I've seen in decades.
Mr. Stafford won't remember this but: In the early 1980's, mom and I were walking the strip. We reached the crosswalk at Caesar's Palace. We were about to cross where the cars exit and paused when a jeep pulled up. Mom waved him on. The driver smiled, tilted his head and waved his arm for us to cross. We did. After a few steps in we saw that the driver was the brilliant Jim Stafford! We giggled and gushed. mom was quite shy and she blushed. He realized that we recognized him a he laughed. When we reached the front of his jeep mom asked me, "Is he still looking?" "Yep. And he's smiling big." "Oh my gosh!" We passed his jeep and were about to reach the sidewalk, when mom asked me, "Is he still looking?" I began to look behind us when she said, "No! Don't look! I'll look." She did. "Oh my! He's STILL looking. AND he's still laughing! And he waved to me!" Every now and then she'd bring it up. A few days before she died in 1995, she brought it up....laughing. Not an easy thing, for by this time she was in extreme pain. Thank you Mr. Stafford.
Jim came to our college in Rapid City SD in either 1973 or 1974. Small intimate ballroom and we sat right under the stage. We laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe. Best part was after the show Jim sat on the edge of the stage and visited with all of us. He was a really nice guy.
The man's a pure comedic genius...and a stunning guitarist! And banjo and fiddle player, too. And, oh, he makes me laugh....he has for 50 years. I'm really glad he's with us. Love him!
I first heard this song in my early teens, and I've been a Jim Stafford fan ever since. Imagine my delight when I found out he's actually an incredible musician.
A few years back I was an In Home Caregiver, my client had MS. We constantly entertained each other with this song. One of us would sing the lyrics just out of no where, didnt matter what we had going on. Always made us have to stop and die laughing. God he was fun.😂🤣😂🤣. Thank you Jim Stafford.❤
I watched this as a kid and memorized it. It was bafflingly brilliant to me when I was around 10 I’d say. So amazing. The timing, drawing the crowds attention, creating tension, clever mixed with just a great song. 🎉❤😂
Saw him in concert in Angels Camp,CA. 1980. He was great. Had a vest with spiders and snakes on it. Every woman in the audience wanted it. Man is great.
I had this song memorized in elementary school. Got me in an ass-load of trouble. Was just looking at a long-lost cassette tape from the ye olden days and this was the first song. I knew I just had to find it on the internets.
These guys in my junior high school class would sing this and Bobby Bare's Drop Kick Me Jesus in class while constantly giggling and hopped up on drugs they took from mom and dad's medicine cabinet. 40+ years later I can still hear them.
I think it's safe to say they already are. At least to anyone who even loosely about music. I can't intentionally ppay a specific note on anything. I mean I can tap a snare or beat a bass drum. Anybody can drop that. Just stay with the best. Stratford, Roy Clark, Joe Bonomassa,. As a matter of fact, someone's probably got stufff on sheet music that never had the opportunity to get in front of the right person AT THE RIGHT TIME. I think somebody played Skynyrd, including Freebird, for nine labels who all turned them away, before MCA ripped them off. They were just a bunch of kids hanging on the street playing baseball and racing gocarts and such. Gary Rossington dropped out because of his dislike for the Coach who was always on then about there hair if it touched their ears. Probably others, too. Just a bunch of teens who's Dad's took lunch pales to their blue collar jobs. Living week to week. They knew nothing of contracts or business dealings. They have a song, "Working for MCA" that covers a little of that. It's kinda funny but still very sad that a bunch of sleeze bags would take advantage of kids like that. Where and when they were from, you just took a man, especially an established business owner, at his word.. He had to be or he'd go out of business. Most of the time customers had to buy some things on credit because they had to wait for the crops to come in or til they could sell a few head of cattle, pigs, whatever they may be into. Usually a little of all. If you ever get to see an hour or longer documentary on the band, I recommend viewing it. So the customer had to be legit, too., because he'd have nobody give him credit after that.
This is the second time that I've heard this song, Jim. The first was back in 1989 thereabouts. I was driving over-the-road and laughed my butt off for miles. Love the song, Jim. Thanks!
The first time I heard this song was in the 1980 Clint Eastwood movie "Any Which Way You Can". I had always thought the song was created to be in the movie. I have just NOW found out it wasn't made specifically for the movie but actually had been made years before! The only reason I came here to RUclips to hear the song was because, for some reason, the song popped in my head and so I had to come here to listen to it.
Dec. 13, 2018---Oh God, I remember watching the Smother Brothers when it aired on tv way back when. Back when comedy was done right with no cursing, etc. Thanks for the video.
Remember this from my childhood and seeing him perform this video version on stage here and would ALWAYS sing a long! 😂 The simpler times....for the most part
God it's been a long time since I've heard this, but I remember when it came out. My mom always listened to country, and this was on the radio a lot. Jim is a Florida man, from Grady Judd's neck of the woods.
Well done Jim Stafford , you are the most amazing singer songwriter and musician and comedian, I just love all of your entertainment, hopefully sometime I can travel from Ireland to see you in your lovely theatre in Branson Thanks a million and a million bows to you Frank Gissane Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪

Classic tune for a classic show , Smothers Brothers was one of the best shows out there for its time. jwh1747 i also remember watching this when it aired. My memory is as bad as yours is apparently , lol
According to my mom, I used to belt this song out spontaneously when I was a baby, pretty much as soon as I could sing. "YIPEE AI AYYYYY!!!! COW PATTY!" (I couldn't help it. It's so damn catchy.)
For my money, Jim Stafford is the best entertainer in the history of Branson. And I mean that literally, because I paid my money to see him 3 different times. The only drawback to seeing his show was that my jaw muscles were actually sore the next morning from laughing so much (not joking). Hope all is well, Jim. Thanks for all the great entertainment over the years.
This guys ability to combine comedy with genius guitar virtuosity are beyond compare.

I love him going around his guitar and the darn thing pretty much stays in one spot!! And playing without a strap!
Jim Stafford is the only guitarist I've ever seen play two songs at the same time on one guitar. Fantastic musician.
Jim came to our college in Rapid City SD in either 1973 or 1974. Small intimate ballroom and we sat right under the stage. We laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe. Best part was after the show Jim sat on the edge of the stage and visited with all of us. He was a really nice guy.

I love it when he runs around the guitar
This was when entertainment was legit talent!!! I miss those decades...
3:21 That moment when he runs around the guitar - is genius!

Jim is delightful. Just a simple, impish look on his face can bring a beautiful laugh. He is a timeless treasure.
Loved this mans songs, what a talent. He always made me laugh. Shame country music isn't like this anymore!! 😂
So true, country music is not thesame anymore. Do you listen to the current country music we have now or you stick to the old ones
Jim was a great guitarist who seldom played it straight. On the occasional times when he did listeners were in for a treat.
My dad introduced me to the brilliance of Mr. Stafford and I have given my sons his albums so more generations can jam to his awesomeness.
You're the man Jim. I have been a fan since the 70s. You're one of a kind , Brother! AJ
I love his wide eyed, innocent delivery.😂
Masterly written and performed! Thanks Jim.
I can't understand how I've lived almost 50 years on this planet and just now discovered this man!
That walk-around-guitar bit was smoooooth. haha just why not?
LOL 😂 😆
Stafford & the Smothers Brothers.....What real talent!! Thanks for the post and memories!!!!!
I watched this as a kid and memorized it. It was bafflingly brilliant to me when I was around 10 I’d say. So amazing. The timing, drawing the crowds attention, creating tension, clever mixed with just a great song. 🎉❤😂
This song is on the soundtrack album to Any Which Way You Can.
My granddaughter (since about 4 years ago. She's age 12) loves Jim Stafford and Ray Stevens.
My dad always played this when I was growing up and when I was a little kid I didn’t realize it was a joke song. One of the best of all times
Saw him in concert in Angels Camp,CA. 1980. He was great. Had a vest with spiders and snakes on it. Every woman in the audience wanted it.
Man is great.
I heard this on the Dr. Dimento show when I was 12 or 13 (80’s). Still know the lyrics by heart lol.
I had this song memorized in elementary school. Got me in an ass-load of trouble. Was just looking at a long-lost cassette tape from the ye olden days and this was the first song. I knew I just had to find it on the internets.
This song is genius.
Had me crying laughing.
Was fortunate to see this guy live in Branson....amazing talent
I saw him play there several times...my absolute favorite.
It's artists like this that makes a better world to live in. What talent and a solid entertainer..God Bless him!!
I don't believe in God, only Jim Stafford.
We should have more people to do shows like this we need to laugh more often 😂
Amazing to see this fond memory from my childhood.
Awesome! Forgot about this song! Pure talent!👍👍👍
I first heard this song on "The Mike Douglas Show" in the early 70s! A COMEDIC CLASSIC!
Just simply, thank you .

Have to love the older music since there's nothing new that's worth listening too.
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
My dad used to play this on the 8-track in his Chevy truck in the late 70's. Great memory!
I've watched this about 100 times over the years. Can watch another 100 times. Love him!

I saw Jim Stafford while at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. He wasn't singing, just hanging out with his family. what a great singer.
Jim Stafford is my all time favorite entertainer 😊
This man is pure brilliance.
My dad told me about this song for years. I was so excited when I found it.

What a performer. Wildly entertaining. You were, are, and always will be THE MAN.
Saw his show years ago in Branson... my wife and I never laughed so hard in all our lives!

The Smother Brothers was a couple of twin brothers that was Serial (ceral or surreal) Killers. Don't make me tell ya there MO.

This show is from their revival not there much earlier show.
