Of course I lost one of the 6 screws holding the faceplate on probably like a lot of other RUclips backyard mechanics but this vid got the job done THANK YOU
I'm so glad you were able to get this done! Thanks for the message.
Awesome video, thank you. Saved me a lot of headaches.. just so everyone know they do have a recall out on these switches. However, they dont know how to fix the problem yet.
I appreciate your kinds words. I received my recall notice last week, and am curious what GM's fix will be.
I thought about that as well.. Hopefully, they will figure it out soon.. 🤠
Great video thank you. Saved me another trip to dealer. $16 and 5 min time and my tailgate headache is resolved.
I appreciate your kind words!
Awesome detailed video. I have to replace my top switch.
I appreciate your feedback!
great !!! thank you. it just seems like water problem..... happens more so while washing tailgate ..till it drys out. for me anyway. thank you for video!!
@@christophersage66 I appreciate your message, I'm so glad it was helpful!
Jeff,
Also considering a dab of silicone on the switch wire at the entery point to seal the switch from water. It is pretty clear that the source of the problem is water and the wire seal on the switch itself.
I totally agree. Hopefully the part numbers help you out. Rock Auto usually has the switches in stock, and at great prices.
Perfectly detailed video !!!! Great job !!!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Yeah! Thanks for quick reply. Have a good one
finally found a video on this. My Multi flex top tailgate button just went out. And ya i go threw alot of car washes lol. good to know. Have my switch covered under warranty but good to know info.
Great video! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! I do have both switches on eBay as well. Here's a link to the main tailgate switch:

2021 Sierra 1500 you said “if either of the 2 switches don’t work at all - it’s a whole other issue “ can you share more on this?
Mine are not working at all. Only the key fob or the dash switch will lower main tailgate. I appreciate your video and advice!
We need to come up with a way of protecting the assembly so that this won't happen. It is likely the water getting in there.
Perhaps smearing/spraying some kind of coating/waterproofing over the assembly and also making a way for water to
drain out? Dunno, just thinking . . .
I completely agree. Even with plugging the holes in the top of the tailgate a couple years ago, I just replaced ANOTHER switch.
Love the video. Helped tremendously for removal. Like a kid with a brand new toy decided to play with the multi pro tail gate forgetting I had my D ring shackle hitch in and cracked the housing plate. The truck is 3 days old…. Do you happen to know the part number for the outer plastic shroud? Everything I have found is 200 for the full assembly with everything. Any insight would be much appreciated
Glad I could help. Unfortunately, I don't know the shroud part number. Your local dealer might give you the number, and you can shop it online to save some money. Don't worry, you'll have your truck back in great shape again soon.
One shorted out from water......killed battery. Towed to dealer 2 times before they figured it out.
I'm having the same problem as you (the top switch). Can you please give me info on how I can get this part from you? Thanks
Hi there, I no long have any upper tailgate switches. The latest part number (that I'm aware of) for the upper/smaller tailgate switch is 85626238. If you google this, you should be able to order it from a dealership online. I hope this helps.
I purchased a used 2022 Sierra 2500 yesterday and neither of the switches on the tailgate are working. Sounds like exactly the same as @rwyatt1963 has explained, dash and remote work but not either of the buttons on the tailgate. I too would appreciate any advice. Does not seem to be much about troubleshooting problems with these tailgates on the interweb. Thanks for the video as it seems I might be headed down the same rabbit hole later this week.
@timturner9023 I do think both switches need replacement. Check with your dealer to see if your truck is included in the recall...it'd be done for free, then.
@@buy_gone Thanks for the reply. Recalls were done as per Carfax report and I checked on the GM recall website with the VIN and it also confirmed no outstanding recalls. Do you know if there is a way to check the switches to confirm they are bad. I prefer not to throw parts at problems without some troubleshooting. Thanks again
@@timturner9023 I don't know the testing procedure, sorry.
Just got my 2024 Sierra HD in a few weeks ago. Surprisingly they still have this issue, my main tailgate is opening on its own with the doors unlocked. Have you ever had your battery go dead overnight from this switch trying to operate? If my doors are locked, the tailgate will not open but I do hear a chime coming from inside the cab
I haven't had any battery issues. Gosh, what a shame they're still having these problems.
Great video. I just bought my 2022 AT4 1500 last weekend, and noticed after I left the dealership that the lower button doesn’t work. Took the time today to dig into the tailgate and see what was going on and it seems like the previous owner had cut the yellow wires right at the switch. Any chance you have an idea why they might have done this? Thanks
Yes, to keep it from opening on its own. Your truck is likely a part of the recall, and should have that switch replaced with part number 85734717. I hope this helps.
@@buy_gone thanks!
@tylerotis6209 You're welcome, thanks for reaching out.
I need to get that switch for my truck. 2022 gmc 1500 sierra top switch does not work 6:08
I believe the updated part number you need is 85626238. Do some searching, but I think that's correct.
Hi. I have 2022 2500. My tailgate keeps opening while driving.
Want to put a regular lock like my 2016.
Have you ever exchanged the electronic lock and installed an old school one? Don’t care if lose camera etc. want to be secure
No, I haven't heard of anyone doing this yet. I'm not sure it'd be possible without a TON of work.
What website did you order these from. The GM page I looked up said the latest vehicle it fits is a 1995
I got mine from a local dealer. I do have extras on eBay...

Howdy! Hey i have a 2022 at4 that the tailgate is dropping every 30 seconds or so😢 do you know if the 1500 multi pro tailgate uses same switches? Thanks!!!!
I don't, unfortunately.
They are the same #'s... rock auto is out of stock😢 darn!!! Unplugged the switch and atleast it stopped unlatching every 30 seconds 😅
Can you just unplug the switch so its not dropping on its own until a switch is available
You can absolutely do this.
What’s going on! I need the lower(main tailgate switch). Do you have any left?
Yes, but punch that part number into rock auto. I think they have a bunch in stock. If not, give me a shout. Thanks.
What’s the part number for the face plate? Do you have those in stock?
I just have the upper and lower switches on eBay. My username is tiedke.
Upper switch issue; so I get it apart click the button and it works; when I snap it back in where it goes the button won’t work from outside; any advice?
Check to see if one of the plastic clips on either end of the switch are broken. I suspect once installed, the switch is moving out of place ever so slightly, keeping you from getting decent leverage on the button when you push.
how would you troubleshoot the switch?
In my experience, they just start going haywire; opening on their own. When that happens, I swap 'em out.
Where did you find the replacement switch. My upper one is going ballistic.
@@chrisweir4488 Rock Auto
Where can I order a switch for main tail gate?
I'd check Rock Auto.
22 3500 Denali and I’m in 4th switch. Opened on highway and stuff falls off. Opened on friends trailer and dented tailgate. This is ridiculous. I’m out of warranty now so I’m paying for them on an 88k truck 2 years old. GMC sucks
My upper just went again last night! I have the top siliconed...going to try to shield those switches somehow.
