LOVED Gunter Wand!! I only played with him once with the Chicago Symphony.....This work and the Schubert "Unfinished". I STILL remember those WONDERFUL concerts.....PITY we only had him the one time...But I will never forget them, nor him.
How wonderful! Thanks for sharing your memories 💐💐💐
I'm not sure enough people realize how special this is.
We are glad you liked it too! :)
I don't know Brahms so very glad this appeared on my timeline, it is very beautiful. Herr Wand was extraordinary.
We're glad, our recording appeared on your timeline! Thanks for listening.
Greatness has no age!! Extraordinary maestro Wand!!!💐💐💐💐
Indeed!!
I find it amazing how a conductor can communicate with the orchestra with the slightest of facial movements. Watching Gunter Wands face is the perfect example of this. The slightest raising of an eyebrow, a hint of a smile, and a commanding stare like your mother used to give you and you knew exactly what she meant. What a joy it must have been to be part of this magnificent performance.
Thanks for listening to our music and sharing! ☺️
The Wonderful Wand. R.I.P..
Superb ensemble and a conductor who truly understood this complex work.
Thank you for this comment - much appreciated!
It took Brahms nearly 20 years to write this symphony and well worth waiting for. Not one wrong note , just perfect. Beethoven would have been proud. 🙂🙂Wolfgang Kreipe Sherwood Durban
The fine performance is the tip of the iceberg - what lies underneath is the many hours of meticulous rehearsal (something Wand was noted for) which means that players and conductor are at one in their interpretation, everything is beautifully balanced and the detail is brought out. Even in this piece that I have known well from childhood, some of the phrasing brought unique insights.
Thank you!! And, yes - he was noted/famous/notorious for his meticulous work during rehearsals. :) "Können wir das noch einmal machen, bitte" ...
Superb performance !!!!!
Ah yes... how many times did I hear him say that, I had the privilege to play for him over a number of years with the BBCSO. Unforgettable performances and indeed very demanding rehearsals. I was moved to tears watching and listening to this, it feels like playing for him again. Greatly missed, never forgotten.@@NDRKlassik
This is about as perfect a performance of this as I have heard. Pretty awesome.
Wow, we are so happy to hear that! Thank you!!
Masterly orchestral playing and direction. A fantastic recording. Thanks so much for sharing.
It is our pleasure! Thank you for joining!
Herzlichsten Dank NDR Kollegen und Freunden
Wie immer herzlich gern!
The final is briliant!
Thanks a lot!
An enthralling performance! Maestro Wand really gets into the heart of these wonderful works! He's very sadly missed
We're glad you liked the video as well! 😊
Wer Bruckner kann, kann nicht immer Brahms ;))
Günter Wand konnte beides vorzüglich.
Das Orchester in TOP-Form.
Dankeschön!
Wir danken herzlich! :)
Wunderbar !
Boy! That timpanist is spot on at the very end! BRAVO
Superb playing. You can follow everything very clearly and see all the relationships between all motives.
motifs.
Merci 😘
Bravissimo!!! 👏👏👏 What a beautiful concert! 🎶 Thank you! 🤗
Our pleasure! Thank you for joining us.
This is a fantastic performance. Wand's features are here: fidelity to the score, respect metronomic indications, atention to detail while preserving the overall architecture, musicality over anything else, no excesses, long rehearsals to reach to what he has in mind, etc.
On the other hand, as expected with those parameters as main dirvers, it lacks spontaneity, creativity (overall it sounds as if already heard before), freshness, even some of the excitement of a live performance, etc.
At the end you have to choose between both worlds, either follow the score or interpret the score. On the anitpodes of this you have Furtwängler, the master of subjectivism.
Both things are perfectly valid, you may enjoy both.
Gran interpretacio'n!!!!!!!!!.-
Muchas gracias!
Wow Fantastic. Thanks for sharing 🎶🎶
Our pleasure! Thank you for being with us!
A very fine performance of one of the greatest composed symphonies of all time. I personally like Mahler,s no. 1 a little better but this work is first class brilliance !!!!!
Happy to hear that! Thank you for commenting! :)
Delighted to hear another conductor ( and a great one) take the opening at this tempo. And it makes the movement become likelier and with a greater degree of singing quality. Hari
Niewyobrażalnie piękne. Tak utwór, jak i wykonanie
Wielkie dzięki!! We are happy to hear that!
Thank you for sharing!
The musical ideas are front and center, and clearly presented. Where others plow ahead, Maestro Wand holds back, and then unleashes the energy to much greater effect. Each transition is executed with purpose, to greater effect than most others. A well above average performance of this important work.
Thank you very much for sharing! His work is outstanding and we are happy to be able to share it!

wirds gemacht, probierts mal!'
Many thanks for posting this!
Wunderschön. :) Vielen Dank,our pleasure!!
Felicitaciones.
Gracias!!
bonne musique!
Mais oui! :)
Good old days~~:)
Ah, yes. Yes indeed

Sorpreso dal tempo veloce dell'attacco, come Toscanini

Ist das eigentlich Gerd Seifert am Solohorn?
Und Uwe Köller an der Trompete!!
Herzlich gern!! Vielen Dank!
Yes, that is Gerd Seifert.

Is the principal hornist Gerd Seifert?
Gerd Seifert plays first horn.
@@NDRKlassik Danke!
It's our pleasure!
Those trombones in the last 2 minutes, growling then scaling up in the second to last measure. Exactly as it is written in the score. What a loss.
Hi, we are sorry to hear that. But everyone feels differently - and rightly so. There often is no such thing as the ultimate truth in art.
@@NDRKlassik There is no need to listen to something that talks about a "shell of a soul" without paying the price.
Eine typische Beamtenkapelle. Opa Wand versucht sein Bestes.
Offensichtlich leiden Sie unter massiven Hörstörungen. - Was das NDR Sinfonieorchester hier unter Wand abliefert, klingt tausendmal besser als vieles, was z.B. die Berliner oder Wiener Philharmoniker unter solchen "Star"-Dirigenten wie Thielemann, Barenboim oder Mehta spielen...
Streng, aber oft betulich untercharakterisierte Gestalten. Schade!
