  • Schubert's "Unfinished" might be his most famous symphony these days. Maestro Günter Wand conducts the NDR Symphony Orchestra (today's NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra) at the opening concert of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2001 at the Concert and Music Hall Lübeck.

I was impressed by the nuanced articulations, including the symbols that soften and weaken. Also, I was very impressed with the nuanced articulation of the orchestra's understanding of the conductor. This performance occurred less than a year before he died. He REALLY knows his Schubert. It is conducted deceptively straightforward, but it is a highly nuanced performance that never gets bogged down. Yet, it is a highly emotional conception while strictly adhering to the score. The NDR plays its heart out for him. One of the best performances I've heard of this oft-played symphony. Some versions come close, and maybe a few are as a good --- but I've yet to hear one that surpasses this one. Bravo!

In the English-speaking world and various other countries, this symphony is designated No. 8, with No. 7 being the E flat major symphony (D729) of which Schubert wrote a full draft which others have since orchestrated - a fine piece, though not as sublime as the Unfinished. Gunter Wand and the NDR give an excellent performance - as expected!

He was bursting with ideas for another symphony (his "Great" C Major, No.9), so he set this one aside expecting to finish it at a later date. But at 31, he was already dead. What he may not have realized is that this Symphony No. 8 is finished! Do you really feel it incomplete, when the beautiful second movement dies away? Do you really think it needs a scherzo and a bombastic final movement? On top of that, Schubert wrote rather lengthy movements, so these first (and last) two movements are unusually long for the period. No, it's very much "finished". It dies away, gently and beautifully, like all perfect endings to all things.

For those not familiar, Godowsky, one of the greatest of the post-Bach composers of counterpoint, actually composed an incredible Passacaglia and Fugue for the piano based on Schubert's theme. This piece is so monstrously difficult, most concert pianists won't even play it in concert. But! Antti Siirala IS up to the challenge, and the result is amazing!
