You're one of the few crafters I would watch for hours. I'm always happy to get a notification of a new video from you. Hope your week is blessed beyond belief.
Hi Nik. Totally love your work! Made the lapbook (a steampunk version) last month, and tagged you on Instagram in case you wanted to see it :) The reason the trains toot their horns at all hours: They start tooting them at a roughly given distance from each and every crossing, because, regardless of the hour, there might be someone on the tracks - a car, a drunk in a car, a drunk not in a car, kids (or even adults) standing or walking on the line. Tooting give people warning and time to get off (or out of the car if it is stuck). Also, If they have tooted their horn and then something happens - it is of course a tragedy, and the driver will feel it the rest of his life - but they are not liable, the person who didn't move is. If they don't toot, then they and the firm become liable. And as far as why they are allowed to operate outside standard business hours when other noisy business in municipal areas have to stop - they are not working IN a municipal area, merely passing THRU it. Also if they weren't allowed to transport outside business hours, overnight delivery would cease to be a thing, and given the distances they have to cover and the connections with other businesses they have to make, everything would take around 5 times as long to get anywhere (including mail and parcels).
I made my first Raggedies today to put in a naked journal I'm giving to my physical therapist tomorrow. It was so fun! I'll be making more of these. Thank you, your videos are great!
You spoke about noisy trains. I am an Australian so I cannot comment on American trains, but most of my life I lived near the railway line, diesels, electric and steam trains. I got used to it and I came to like the train noises, I never really noticed it, but my visitors noticed and were quite amazed that I was used to it. I moved in 2018, so no more trains….now my nights are too quiet and I cannot sleep. Give it time and you will adjust and enjoy the train noises. As for pigs, well they have been at my house too! Ha ha!
I love you, you're as manic as a box of frogs and you're wonderful. I could imagine you just throwing all your chosen bits and pieces into the air and then when it all lands you glue it all down with a triumphant yell of "well it's done!". Please, for the love of EVERYTHING.............. NEVER CHANGE! 🖤
Very funny description! I have to pick up & put the majority of my supplies away after I finish an art session because I hate, hate, hate looking for things when I want it. I might have stuff everywhere while I'm working on a project but I put it away at the end of the day so I don't start off the next day or week later already looking for my punch or tape or glue stick.
Hey, Nik. love to listen to you! The residents of my neighborhood got the train horn stopped for all the intersections over about 2 miles of track, but it took several years. The train company had to improve every intersection (about 5) with curbs that would prevent anyone from driving around the guard arms. As long as the guard arms go down and the lights flash, we are safe. Also, it is only a freight line, no AMTRAK. So now, the midnight train is silent!
Saw the Monet exhibit in Australia they put his lily paintings in a continuing circle around a room as he intended it to be, so it was like sitting in his garden he said. He never got round to having them displayed like this when he was alive. So beautiful.
Everything I've ever known has just been blown out of the water! These are so amazing! I've always wanted to make my journals look like they were exploding with extra bits, but never knew how to accomplish what I wanted. Now I do!!! Thank you so much for sharing your awesome creativity! Have a blessed day~Shelley
When you said "sometimes you just want to be in your PJs all day and eat ice cream" I was literally I'm my PJs at lunch time, and instead of feeling ashamed, I was actually like "WAIT! I happen to have ice cream!"
I had a day where I was putting cheese on pizza...as she said "the middle of the pizza takes care of itself"😂 synchronicity always happens with cool people.
That inking of the edges of each paper is too riveting, watching this stuff is soothing and delicious. Thank you Nik, hope you have a lovely catch-up with your daughter.
You are so dang funny! And FUN to listen to. It feels like we're just good friends. And I loooooove every single one of your ideas. I'm doing a Nik the Booksmith marathon!
I have to say you made my evening so enjoyable! I love hearing you talk and I hope the pigs stay away. You have beautiful hands and you’re so expressive with them. Enjoy your daughter!
ADORABLE! We are sisters from some odd parents - since I'm old enough to be your mama! LOL! You have given me some ideas on how to use some marvelous off-cuts I bought at Peggy Skycraft's studio - must have been about 20 years ago now! I love to touch and look at them but need to do something with them! She actually invented that wax stuff that is now sold under Tim Holtz's name - miniscule amount rubbed over a huge area protects papers! I watched them making designs until I really had to go! I also bought some metallic wax crayons - used to rub over the paper on a grid and other things. Oh, you would have loved to be there!!! Enjoy your time with your daughter and thanks for the visit!!!
Wow!!! My first time catching your channel and I am blown away. Your mouth moves as fast as your hands and I am just not used to that. You’re a hoot as we say around our neck of Ohio. I am a new subbie and look forward to checking out previous videos and then next new ones. Have a wonderful day!!
Hey Nik I have a little share! To start with I’m totally with you on the “Messy Marvin” thing. As a child I lived in what is called the “Y” of the railroad. Imagine there is a top bar on the letter Y well I lived inside of that. I heard trains day and night for much of my youth. When I moved away from the Y I couldn’t sleep for the longest time. The rumble of the trains literally lulled me to sleep. Now that I’m an adult, I sleep through everything!
I TOTALLY GET YOU !! I try, i really try to keep things organized, but then ya get this idea and that idea and oh yea, what about this ???? Next thing ya know my table is covered with things i could use for this or things to use for that. My mom says i should only get out what i need and then use it. She obviously doesn't understand !! ......................... i need all of this stuff !! And then there's paint, or no, how about ink instead ? Oh .............. and instead of a folder, i should make my own paper, and then we are hopping a totally different train !! It's how our brain is wired. And then when ya try to organize and donate stuff ya don't use, you realize you use everything so nothing ends up in the box for donating. Such a cycle. AND YES ---- lying in bed, can't sleep cuz too many creations are flowing through the brain keeping us awake . That;s all ok. Could be worse and we could be addicted to substances that aren't good for us OR things illegal.
I used to live near Gatwick airport, and every day at 4am was woken up by the jumbo jets practically on my roof! There were police helicopters at all times. Yep and the hum of trains from down the road! I now live close to the sea, very rare to hear a plane at all, no trains, maybe hear a police siren once or twice a month, but do hear lots of seagulls...which I love! When we first moved here I was freaked out with the lack of noise, at night outside you could literally hear a pin drop, which surprised me because I live in a town, not out in the middle of nowhere. Give me flying gulls over flying planes ANY day! Oh we also get geese flying over too which is lovely. 😊
I love museums. Especially art museums. I've been making some journals out of gutted old books and my desk is a disaster. I'm intrigued by the new journal. Can't wait to see it. Thanks for the chat and the inspiration.
wow i am learning so much from watching your vidis, but i havent used them to make or start my journaling journey, i have so many and beyond supplies and had been collecting since i was 35 and am now 52, a lot of stuff had occurred since then and now, and i think its time to put paper and ink together right? i cant get enough of your videos and the way you talk, its all addicting!! keep up the fantastic work!!
Laffin' sooooo hard. "....I saw some pigs...." My craft area is such a mess, my pigs ran away from home...so, you know, they probably headed to your place. Please don't send them back. 🥴
I wish it was your video that never ends!! I love watching you do this.. I am riveted, honesty.. love all your videos Nik! Oh, and enjoy your visit with your daughter 😁
I’m new to this but absolutely hooked. Here’s my dilemma.. you and other you tubers use acronyms, abbreviations, and terminology that I’m sure you’re very familiar with however us newbies ( I can’t be the only one feeling this way) are so frustrated at trying to figure out what you’re talking about. What the heck is a “raggedy” ? I think I’ve watched every video on journals and have only been able to figure out a few. You are my first person I watched and binge watched and my favourite by far, that’s why I brought it up here.
A raggedy is a junk journal term! It is basically a scrappy thing (it can be a raggedy journal, a raggedy bookmark, a raggedy file folder, etc.) it is usually a bookmark like item though. When you junk journal, if you want paper and scraps and stuff to stick out a great way to do that is with raggedy pages that can be removed to work in the book or maybe travel with the book.
Yep, Carrie is on the right track but hopefully not that train track! 😏😄I came up with raggedies one day when I was finishing up a book I was making. I wanted it to have the look of being fully decorated but I didn't want to take up room on the pages by gluing embellishments on them. I like how they spill out and add interest without reducing writing space inside.
I'm glad you asked this because I Googled it and nothing but the book character came up. I've been watching Nik for a long time, but I guess I must have skipped class when this was brought up. haha! Nik is my favorite booksmith of all time.
Oh so you missed the raggedy episode! That was a great moment in booksmith history lol! 😉 Maybe Nik could link that episode in the description box, it was fun!
Hi, Nik. Good to see you. I love Monet and saw quite a few of his works at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. It is amazing to stand in the presence of these paintings I have loved my whole life. Hahaha, about the light box. While you were talking about it, the lighting looks great. I love your ledger raggedy page. And I really like that floral, paper you used toward the end of the video. (Not the Florentine one). Don’t forget to put your stopper topper back in your Art Glitter Glue. (I use that glue too, with a stopper topper in it.)
I was just thinking to myself that it must be odd filming for RUclips because you have to talk yourself through everything out loud.... then I realized I do that anyway! Love the book you’re making Nik!
I LOVE the sound of a train! My dad worked for the Railroad so the sound makes me think of my daddy...can you tell I'm a forever daddy's girl?...all of this coming from someone who doesn't live near train tracks. Lol! I did live 20yrs near an Airforce Base...so I can sure relate to planes waking me all night (sonic booms etc). Thank you for inspiration- I love doing raggedeees. Love -Tonya
Trains! No matter how far you live from the track you’ll still hear them especially in the middle of the night and especially if you’re like me, sensitive to certain kinds of sounds. And I totally get the pigsty thing. But at least you have a studio to speak of. I have a living room and a dining table. Imagine the nightmare of having to clean it up on a regular basis so we can actually sit and eat at the table. I need to go to Costco and get myself a folding table and put it in the family room. At least I can close the door on that and keep all my art stuff out. Oh, and the raggedy gave me some new ideas. Always a treat seeing your handy work. BTW, I came across one of your “students”. You should be a proud momma. Seriously, she’s super awesome. Sunny side Journals is her RUclips. She’s great.
Hi Nik, thanks for this and all your other videos, I am new to junk journalling and have learnt so much from you, that and you are incredibly amusing to listen too. Look forward to more...
"What's the deal with trains?" When I lived at the River House there was a train track bridge across the river and it echoed and shook my windows when it went by. The most jarring one was at 1 a.m. my first night there, but then I got used it. Ha!
Things hiding are the work of those little goblins that giggle in the corner when I am searching and wondering where is it, it was just here🤪great video...raggedy on my list for today🍁
Great video, Nik! 💖 My grandfather was an engineer and told me that conducters would sound their horns to loved ones who lived in certain cities and each conducter had a special sequence of blasts so no two were the same.. If you heard the horns you knew your loved one was coming home or thru your town.. Kinda neat huh? Lol
Hey Nik! Fun craft with me. Luv your process videos! Knowing the distance to DIA, in order to make that time, on the the ramp to Departures, you had to instruct your girlfriend on the “Stop, Drop and Roll” method of disembarking your car. 🤣🤣🤣 Happy Crafting
I don’t know either, as I hear the train honking as it goes by and it’s 12:18 A.M. here...maybe like you were saying, a safety thing or just making people aware, like when an ambulance goes through. They don’t have restrictions on sirens...yeah, something or other or maybe 🤷♀️
Trains are such an important part of America!! They are very cost efficient for the weight they carry and it is a highly skilled responsible job to operate a train! Hats off to your relative!! Just think..everything we purchase...including our craft supplies...comes to us by train and then trucks! 🥰 I guess your best option is a loud noise machine, ear plugs or a move.🤩 Hope you find the peace you seek.
I love listening to you ramble...lol i think you could be filing a stack of papers and talking and I would still enjoy your videos. Lolol Thank you Nik !!
Your travelling reminded me of the 'Road Runner' beep beep, remember. Yep, its the pigs fault. I do the same cleaning when the out-laws come visit, its tidy for that day only. It's such a thankless task. My white kitchen stays tidy though cause its new. The train thingy...is cause they're chasing the road runner.
Lol, you just described my daily life! I’m always saying, why now! Love the raggedy! Hope you have a great time with your daughter! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I am sorry for showing my ignorance. ...but what is a raggedy? I am new to this business but I love everything I have seen you do. I am positive you will have a good explanation for me.
Somewhat related to the train pondering, my aunts husband was a firefighter and he said that when they would respond to things super early in the morning and where going through the neighborhood, they would be intentionally loud (honking and sirens) just to wake people up -_- not sure how many other firefighters do that lol or if it at all related to why the train guys do it, but thought it was somewhat relevant 😂
I walk around the house looking for something I put away in a cleaning frenzy, saying out loud…”everything is somewhere, where is ‘missing item’ now?” Makes Dear Husband crazy, ‘specially if I am still in PJ’s with a bottle of glue in my hand!
10 or old!!! For dinner, I had a sucker and some pizza chips. And I was in my jammies by 4:00pm. I have an old Frech dictionary I used when I was taking French in college.
Nik, I certainly know where your coming from e.g. having a clear and tidy craft room 😮😯 I spent time last night tidying mine, and I never got time to craft 😡☹️😢. So yes, it’s not completely done now!!!!!! I really really love 💖 those raggedy thingyabobdodads you’ve made, fantastic and stunning and awesome 👏. Your so funny 😂 too. Thank you so much Nik, it’s Wednesday 11pm here in the UK 🇬🇧 and I’d better get to bed I suppose? xxx Mags
On the trains...you must live in an area without a lot of crossing gates. Trains sound horns where roads cross the tracks to let people know they are coming because it takes a train too long to stop and the will likely hit whatever is on the tracks before they can stop. At least that was what I was told as a kid many, many years ago. My craft room is getting clean. But I usually get distracted and start crafting before I can finish it. And? I blame my undiagnosed ADD for my inability to ever finish cleaning my house. Sigh...and finding all those things I put in a “safe”place. Now what was I doing before I got distracted by your great video??? 😏
You can always go to one of those photo machines and have your picture taken you know or you put in some money and they gave you a four shots they give you four copies of your picture
How does your mat stay so new looking? I am on my second one and it looks like it's 90. Lol. I suppose I should put papers under things when I glue or paint or ink. But I forget
Short answer to the trains question: Trains carry a lot of the goods across the country... many are perishable and they can’t stop moving to let the rest of us get any good sleep 😂 things like produce have to move quickly to avoid spoiling... and railroads are really strict about using the horn on all intersections. they’re more likely to get fired for under honking not overhonking ... I once heard of a guy who honked every time he passed a friends house and he got fired after years of complaints (sometimes I wonder if that’s what’s going on in my neighborhood!! I just want sleep!)
I actually prefer the videos without the corner view of you. Don't take that wrong you are lovely and amazing, however I find the additional image on the screen distracting. Thanks for all you do always! Truly Inspiring, Always Interesting, and very informative. Have an Amazing Day!
You're one of the few crafters I would watch for hours. I'm always happy to get a notification of a new video from you. Hope your week is blessed beyond belief.

I made my first Raggedies today to put in a naked journal I'm giving to my physical therapist tomorrow. It was so fun! I'll be making more of these. Thank you, your videos are great!

I love watching you create and just imagining the synapses firing in your brain!!
Hard to go a week without a NIK video. Thank you !
This piece can hang out "with the cool kids" this is the first video ive seen and i already love her
Something so liberating about Raggedy making...and a vicarious one works too. Smiles, Carol
Wow!!! My first time catching your channel and I am blown away. Your mouth moves as fast as your hands and I am just not used to that. You’re a hoot as we say around our neck of Ohio. I am a new subbie and look forward to checking out previous videos and then next new ones. Have a wonderful day!!

Okay no one in the comments is asking about Fran’s handmade paper. How can we buy her paper Nik? Can we contact her or does she have a website?
I just love watching you work and how you decide on how to go about things

Thanks. Have a great visit with your daughter. Love and Hugs from Oklahoma
Should incorporate that orangey colored book front printout in a digi on your Etsy store...gorgeous 😁
Loved the project! Hope your time with your daughter was great!
Great video, Nik! 💖
My grandfather was an engineer and told me that conducters would sound their horns to loved ones who lived in certain cities and each conducter had a special sequence of blasts so no two were the same.. If you heard the horns you knew your loved one was coming home or thru your town.. Kinda neat huh? Lol
That is COOL!👍🏻😎
Choo Choo!!🚂🚂🚂
😄
I don’t know either, as I hear the train honking as it goes by and it’s 12:18 A.M. here...maybe like you were saying, a safety thing or just making people aware, like when an ambulance goes through. They don’t have restrictions on sirens...yeah, something or other or maybe 🤷♀️
Trains are such an important part of America!! They are very cost efficient for the weight they carry and it is a highly skilled responsible job to operate a train! Hats off to your relative!!
Just think..everything we purchase...including our craft supplies...comes to us by train and then trucks! 🥰
I guess your best option is a loud noise machine, ear plugs or a move.🤩
Hope you find the peace you seek.
Very cool raggedy, Nik! TFs the inspiration!
Love it! Lol my squirrels took off with my spoon ate the last cookie and are on the way to let the pigs in!!😂
Good to see you, Nik! Remember to put the pin back in the glue!! And thanks for the video!!
Monet is my fave, you are so lucky
Love it. Thanks for sharing.
I was a school media specialist. Why oh why didn't I save all my cards, pockets, labels, papers, etc.???????
I love that look! I just need to decide what theme I would like to make a ME junk journal. Ummm early morning thinking. Thanks for the ideas.
In my house those days...as few and far between as they are...are called Bunny Slipper Day!
GLAD YOU TOOK THE TIME TO DO SOME CRAFTING.
Lovely raggedy! I didn't know Monet was in Denver! I need to go! Thanks for sharing!
I love listening to you ramble...lol i think you could be filing a stack of papers and talking and I would still enjoy your videos. Lolol Thank you Nik !!
JUST LOVE YOU NIK-YOU ARE SO FUN-LOVED THE PROJECT-TFS-HUGS/BLESSINGS
Your travelling reminded me of the 'Road Runner' beep beep, remember. Yep, its the pigs fault. I do the same cleaning when the out-laws come visit, its tidy for that day only. It's such a thankless task. My white kitchen stays tidy though cause its new. The train thingy...is cause they're chasing the road runner.
Lol, you just described my daily life! I’m always saying, why now! Love the raggedy! Hope you have a great time with your daughter! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I think mercury is in like, retrocolonoscopy or something. I'm having a week like that too. All kinds of weird glitchy things
😆now. is It
*it is now.😂
Everyone should have at least one Jammy DAY a week !
“That would chap my hide, Man!” Hysterical! Must be a western colloquialism. Enjoy listening to you, as always.
hello Miss Janet! its an old Cowboy Western phrase from movies and cartoons 😄
Love ❤️ this huge tag..can’t wait to give it a try..
I am sorry for showing my ignorance. ...but what is a raggedy? I am new to this business but I love everything I have seen you do. I am positive you will have a good explanation for me.
I found that I could order art glitter glue from Walmart on line cheaper than Amazon and delivered quickly without shipping charges
I am a lover of impressionist art. So excited to hear about Monet’s exhibit. And... that paper with the small petal flowers 🌸 was g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s!
I call that the infinite regression and it shows up a lot when I am gardening.
When I need a laugh, I watch your videos at double speed. You're a hoot!
And now that song is stuck in my head!!! 😱
What kind of paper did you put over the Charles Gerring reference? It was so beautifully transparent.
Ooooh a raggedy book. I love the look of this. x
Mom used her linen fabric, tear them, stiff them lightly, and ready to use. She also used them to paint.
Thank you so much Nik, it’s Wednesday 11pm here in the UK 🇬🇧 and I’d better get to bed I suppose? xxx Mags
Love your raggerties Nik, and your chit chat too. Hugs Susanna xx
Another great project!!
Never saw such a thing but it looks fantastic. I will keep it in mind for future creations of mine. 😂😊
Which kit is that cover printable from? I put a ton of other things in my cart, except that one- cause I couldn't figure it out....thx
Is that a makeup brush?
Can I buy a book? I am from a family of readers, so I can't do it my self without shame coming after. If so is there a link?
Hi Marlene! No secret, I just buy a new one when the old gets cruddy!
Ha! I literally just had that x, y, z conversation with my mom about half an hour ago.
This is totally so COOOOL. and that book looks awesome. Thanks for sharing. (Love having out in my PJs and eating Ice cream LOL LOL
Short answer to the trains question:
Trains carry a lot of the goods across the country... many are perishable and they can’t stop moving to let the rest of us get any good sleep 😂 things like produce have to move quickly to avoid spoiling... and railroads are really strict about using the horn on all intersections. they’re more likely to get fired for under honking not overhonking ... I once heard of a guy who honked every time he passed a friends house and he got fired after years of complaints (sometimes I wonder if that’s what’s going on in my neighborhood!! I just want sleep!)
Love it!
I loved watching your video! Thanks for sharing! And your very funny!😁
I actually prefer the videos without the corner view of you. Don't take that wrong you are lovely and amazing, however I find the additional image on the screen distracting. Thanks for all you do always! Truly Inspiring, Always Interesting, and very informative. Have an Amazing Day!
