Fallout 4 Guide - How to add ceilings, walls & doorways to the houses in Sanctuary

- I've noticed that some people are really struggling with the houses in Sanctuary and are justifiably bothered that they are so riddled with holes and that you can't even add doorways.
This video is a brief tutorial on how to add ceilings, walls and doorways to the houses and generally make them feel more secure.
Follow me on twitter - / norespawns
For those struggling with getting this to work - it still does - this video goes into more detail on the various glitches in game: ruclips.net/video/P0zYUsG8_fw/видео.html
It doesn't to work for me anymore. I'm playing gfallout 4 in PS5.
Same here with it not working on PS5. Remembered your video/glitches from years ago but couldn't get it to work, so I came back here. I think they patched it on new gen.
@@ghostwarfare-2730 there is a mod called place anywhere which helped a lot but there is no group select.
Doesn't work for pc
I really wish Bethesda would have added in a way to "repair" the preexisting houses using materials, like if you could spend 20 wood, 10 steel, and 10 concrete to restore the house model to the prewar model.
***** They could make it so that the paint is still weathered and dirty, but at the very least let us repair the holes in the walls and roof.
Certain furniture at the least should be pristine, since you're creating it from scratch.
+8 bitfrenzy Why because when you refurbish old things in real life it still looks beat up?
Once the Geck is out we'll get mods to let you rebuild them good as new. I'm actually a bit surprised someone hasn't added pristine house parts to the building materials yet so you could at least build a new on the lots you cleared.
Berelore Well I don't expect the settlement to have a fresh coat of paint on everything, but it would be nice to be able to nail some wooden boards over the holes in the walls.
+apotheos1s Covenant...
It Must Be RoofCake Covenant is only decent if you want a premade settlement.
I hate that you can't repair/replace the turrets in Covenant if they get destroyed in an attack.
I always thought it weird that after the nuclear bombs fell, nobody thought to even grab a broom 200 years later
+killslay Codswoth has really been slacking tbh.
+norespawns He specifically says something about trying to clean and how it's impossible to scrub nuclear fallout out of the walls.
+Jack Bandit doesn't explain the piles of rubble that litter every building in the game. he's lazy
killslay your right he could of just moved some shit out
You'd assume after 200 years a lot of areas would be occupied and there would be communities everywhere. Sort of like the walking dead where every community has walls and shit like that.
I wish Bethesda added a way to remove the annoying plants that cannot be removed and will stick through the floors and walls of houses.
Totally. Just, all the leaves, rubble, and bullshit around Sanctuary. Have it there, but have it available to be scrapped.
+Kittysmittygames this, this right here I'm all for, getting sick of having to lift my floors above the plants and all, nothing drives a person with ocd more crazy than seeing plants sticking through floors, walls and beds lol
And the leaves that are lying inside all the houses >:(
Maybe if you stopped scrapping all the brooms to build your massive settlement, they would be able to sweep them up.
They hide terrible texture stitches underneath, I've already taken a look under there and it isn't pretty.
"look at my wood go down" lol
+Pizzonia123 My wood never goes down :3
+Luke Price you should get that checked out...
+Luke Price Sir Hurts a lot.
+Read This If You Are Gay BRO 😂😂😂😂😂💀
@@dyslegeinI'm just looking for building tips 8 years later and this is what I find
Dude,
Thanks.
Croup manor just got 1000 times better.
+Anita Lyfe
Watch this guy called Petard clean it up, maybe you can learn a thing or two from it c:
The Deer I basically built the New Vegas strip at Starlight
Anita Lyfe
Cool, i'd love to see some picture or a video of it!
The Deer My camcorder broke, but it mainly just took a bunch of copper.
Anita Lyfe
Aww, a shame. Sounded really cool.
Brilliant! You are obviously a lot more patient than me. I think I'll just live with the holes in everything
I wish I could've just scrapped all the houses and start fresh.
+WarMachine 1776 that is what I'm wishing for too..I really want to transform Sanctuary in some kind of military base, but because of all those fucked houses I can't really do that
+WarMachine 1776 You could delete the houses using console commands
+Derpster Computers And Gaming I play on the One, sadly.
+WarMachine 1776 oh yeah, Only works on PC
+WarMachine 1776 hey how do I go into building mode?
Awesome, thank you so much! I'm sure not a lot of people know, if you hold X for PS4 or A on Xbox while you have something picked up on your settlement to move, you can use your left stick to move the item around your screen, I use it all the time, and if you hold L1 and X or LB and A you can move structures and items up and down while moving them as well. Not sure about the PC controls though.
You helped me a lot with that information, thank you!
Ty
If you place a door beside a concrete floor, snap it, lower the floor until the door fits to the ground, stash the concrete floor, place a wired fence in front of the door and let it point in the direction of the door, grab both and you can place the door quite nice into the door frames of the houses^^
If you use the 'Scrap Scrap' mod, you can get rid of all the piles of leaves and broken tiles too. Makes for a much tidier house :)
Good to find someone as methodical as me when organizing settlements.
It's just so addicting
other than fitting things wrong way round like door opening outwards lol.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. The settlement building on a console had me wishing I was on PC so I could do the things I wanted. Now I'm happily building my perfect little havens in the Commonwealth!
Almost 1 year and i just found this video ? really, where have you been all this time ? damn.... this ll be a huge addition to my settlement building skills
Bookmarked. This is incredible. Thank you! I thought I was going crazy trying to fix ceilings and always thought that the rug trick didn't work with floor tiles.
Dude....I applaud you! Your sanctuary looks dope, and you did one hell of a job decorating! Hats off to you👏🏼
I wasent expecting this.. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how the roof and wall patches worked. Thank you for this video. It's actually fun doing it.
wow, thanks for that! great tips on how to repair the existing houses. I have been building concrete apartment type buildings on the foundations of the scrapped homes, but now I think I'll refurbish a few existing ones to give my settlement some character! cheers
I am obsessed with settlement building still and it was so validating to hear your frustration with the placing.
Found one of the most helpful Fallout 4 videos so far. Makes me want to play with the construction site of things even more!! Thanks.
That was a big help!
Thank you for sharing this!
I did never know, what to do with this houses. Used them for putting generators in them, or whatever.
Now, the houses are useful and my settlers live in them.
Don't know why, but how you spoke at 9:26 kind of reminded me of Bob Ross. Anyhow, this was helpful video! It's way better than just seeing an Imgur album.
Flying Pilgrim to me the pace of his speech made me feel a bit uncomfortable, it was whispery and slow at times and "I just had my 4th cup of coffee" at other times
Thanks so much for this!
I made a sky fortress by linking 3 stairs together in the air and then plopping down floors up in the sky so raiders couldn;t get near them. Looks great but very unrealistic, so I've pulled it apart and made Sanctuary as habitable as possible.
This is the best video on settlement building, thank you :) i can now give the poor people a proper roof over their heads.Trying to sleep when its raining on you can't be nice lol.No wonder they are constantly complaining about the bed situation! You got yourself a new sub btw.
+MsVanity67 Thank you :)
By far one of the best tutorials I've seen for this. Thanks bro!
Amazingly brilliant, but please, for the love of god, align the floor stripes!
+Gabriel Lopes I actually prefer them being asymmetrical - personal choice :)
+norespawns Hi, you know the things like nuka cola fridges and bookshelves, how do you get them?
It triggers my OCD. Floors and roofs must be aligned. Same thing with railings. Whatever style a building has, it will have that type throughout.
Awesome guide! I added a door to my Sanctuary homes using this glitch but removed the door wall so the rug just moved the door itself and was able to place a door directly into the empty door frame in the existing houses.
Bob Ross of fallout building
your sanctuary looks amazing. love the big gate. been spending loads more time building up mine since I started watching your videos. it's coming along
Another great video norespawns, thank you. One suggestion though, in order to get a roof with no light shining through is easier than you think. Simply use the thin flooring, but when applying the second layer, use the triggers to rotate the sections so they run across, instead of inline with the 1st layer. In other words, one layer the slats go left to right, the next layer the slats run up & down in line with where your looking. This uses a great deal less resources, & is guaranteed to let no light through at all.
I wish there was a way to get in touch on PSN, i would love to pick your brains a bit. Sadly, there's no way i'm putting my game tag on here, only to have loads of random's sending friend requests. I get enough as it is. Take care, & all my best to you.
This is helpful. Maybe I will try it. But I'm mostly interested in seeing the rest of your Sanctuary. I was very intrigued by your intertwined structures.
Did you know in a recent patch they made it so you can attach a door to the workshop and your character's house back door? There might be other doorframes that work now too
You're a genius, dude. I have no idea how you came up with that, but then again you're the genius, not me. Well done.
Wow, nice imagination! I have started a small house in Sanctuary but I have no idea how to use the entire building system so it looks like rubbish. I like the idea of completely closing off Sanctuary though, I'm totally stealing that ;)
+TheAndkonmegalodon I will allow this :)
Thank F'ing God someone figured this out. personally I feel the settlements were kind of rushed in missing key details. Though Bethesda original intention was to make it completely optional. I believe it has become very popular among the fallout community, Rookie players and Veteran players.
very helpful. thanks
+Todd Howard It just works
+MiJerk hehehe
Of the people, for the people.
Hey ;))))
Chef Takahashi Yeah.
Amazing. Definitely going to use some of those tricks in my settlements. Thanks for sharing!
Did you just shit all over my time/Resources spent building a fully handmade building just to make those stupid settlers happy ?
Now I can scrap everything and throw them in these empty houses and save 80% of my materials.
Damn I should have seen this much earlier
How did you get the red door for the last house ?!! is it a PC mod ?
+Khaled Jouda Heh - happy to help :) - Red door? Do you mean the fence doorway leading to the purifier? That's in the junk fences section. And I just used the shack doorway from the menu.
+norespawns no. your house
the original character house
That's just the standard door - it's already attached to the house when you enter the area. You can't even remove it.
norespawns
Holy shit !! seriously !
I never noticed it lol.
This tells you how much I hated those broken houses lol.
+Khaled Jouda No they did not "shit all over" anything you have ever done by making a how to video of how to make things easier for everyone that watches it. They helped you, and others. You just "shit all over" their time and effort of making this video to help you and others by insulting them in this manner for their efforts.
Wow, thanks. I don't know that I'll take the time to really do this, but it does look really good and something to consider for future playthroughs.
Deserve a subscription for this very helpful!
It was never too late for me to finish my resort city. Thanks again for making this video.
(0.0) Your settlement puts mine to shame....
TEACH MY YOUR WAYS O WISE ONE! (subscribed!)
+eblack1622 My Let's Build series has the answers you seek. All I ask is that you pop some Psycho Jet in my honour.
Already on it!
+eblack1622 LOL
Thanks for the video. I've recently started playing, and this worked great for some houses.
HOly sweet fucking baby jesus when you selected everything thank you for the video i just subscribed
You really inspire me. The way your settlements look is amazing. I love the building feature and you are a master.
You made it so much neater! I looooove!
I don't know if anyone has pointed this out to you or if you have noticed but junk fences have a doorway as well and thank you for the information I'm going to use it now
Brilliant dude , BRILLIANT
Since it appears you can no longer log into Bethesda's servers on the Xbox, you can't get any mods on that platform. So this video is a great alternative, thanks!
Very nice ;-) but how do u mange to built the red tent in front of the left hand building?
I like your idea of using rugs to get things in position 👍🏼
I wish they gave you the option to repair the houses with resources
Right? Come on man we have wood and steel, can build fucking machine gun turrets, but we can't remodel a fuckin roof? It pisses me off even more to see Marcy or Sturges hammering the same goddamn spot while the roofs look like swiss cheese. This is a great vid, but it's almost as ridiculous as trying to acquire legendary vendors.
coming back to these years later bring so many memories back. I miss this game oh so much.
How do you keep the riff raff out? The settlers that want to squat on your bed?
you can assign a settler to a particular bed the same way you assign them to a job
+norespawns if you assign them too a bed can you assign them too a job at the same time
+Jordan Paxton yes
+Creeperkid48 thank you sir
You can make a secret room with the concrete block floors like I did. Keep the fuckers out permanently.
while doing this discovered you can move the whole structure without the rug, not sure if its necessary for the placement but seems convenient, also when building if doing it to close to any walls you may have built it will take those as well. ended up taking half my walls with me when i first went to move it and had to adjust where the roof was overhanging near the wall
Holly fuck you're a genius ! Thank you good sir !
I avoided using Sanctuary as a settlement because of how un-rebuildable it was. I used Red Rocket instead because it had a SOLID ROOF! Thanks for making this video and I look forward to seeing how to get the terminal inside without wires everywhere. I think your settlement looks great and would love a longer tour!
+Jason Lovins See my first video if you haven't already :)
the ceiling etc. are awesome.
but what if I want to get rid of something inside the "walls". And I cannot reach it. Is there a way? I have a lamp stuck in the walls of my castle.
And annother thing, you can build the doors so that there using the "house" by pushing them into place with a fence. I've seen a video about it.
But all in all... just great...
thx!
+Barentor If you want to get rid of items you have accidental buried inside walls what you need to do is make the little rug stairs (shown in my next video) and move them so they are mostly inside the walls/rock or whatever area you the item is buried; then place them down; you should then be able to hold X (E or A in PC & Xbox) which should select all items in close proximity. This should then also select the item you have buried.
You might have a little trouble with placing the item somewhere, but once you do it should be out. Hope that helps.
Using quicksave😂
+norespawns great idea thx havent done it yet but does it stop rain coming in cause it dosent on built houses.
+norespawns To save building limit you can remove the doorway and do the rug trick on a door only the problem is finding a lip to line up the rug and door which i found on the first house you can scrap cheers maybe i will make a video if I can figure it out....
This was great. I've seen a number of tricks where people are like 'Open up the console menu and type blah blah blah' and I'm like I am on XBone, so I don't have that option.
Ah thank you a ton for making these videos! Definitely going to be using these tips when I start fixing up sanctuary.
I used the flags to cover my windows lol Just like real life!!
Excellent and highly informative. And yet those few words seem lacking in their ability to properly express my gratitude. I'll be trying this on my settlement proper. All the best.
very informative, thank you much!
Holy shit, this is genius. Thanks for this. I rebuilt my house from the beginning using those small shack foundations (the ones with concrete, under the Wood section) but it took a boatload of materials. This seems a lot more effective. Nice trick!
Does this still work?!
+Unknown Yup.
this is amazing! ty
They haven't made a update except update 1.3
+Unknown no the patchecd it
+Andrew Blacks Why would they patch that... sigh. They suck!!
Fantastic video! I was hoping there was a way to do this! I also appreciate that you did this on PS4 (which is what I play on). A lot of settlement videos involve PC mods, but you've done some incredible things with the base game.
Master racers are laughing their asses off and shouting "modpos" at the screen.
Indeed we are.
One thing here i want to say,WOW, I loved your sanctuary settlement. it's amazing for a small peak in you're video.
Hey man, Im starting up a Facebook page for settlement builders and wanted to make sure you were ok with me sharing your videos there
facebook.com/Fallout4LoB/
+Chris Culpan Yeah go for it :)
Great video, I actually would find a sweet spot in those houses & placed ceilings using the smaller floor pieces & build off of those. This idea is much better, thank you :)
Genuinely surprised at how useful this video is. At first I was like how do people not know how to do this then I was like ohhh snap lol
Your such an inspiration to me bc with all these guide I know how to make massive lore friendly structures thank you so much!👍🏻
Thanks for making this video. I tried doing the door trick before and could never get the wall and mat to "click" into place. I guess I need to keep trying. :) The ceiling idea is brilliant. Thanks!
My wife and I were huge Fallout 3 fans. She passed away and I just refused to play 4, memories, you know. Anyway, I recently gave in and started playing, hooked once again. I must ask, (btw, awesome videos!!!) how did you manage to make the magazines and pip boy displays so perfect? Incredible. She always said what fun it would be to be able to use all the garbage lying around, and she would have just loved this new game. I wish I could mod some artwork with her picture in it in my Fallout "home"...I'm sure she'd be laughing at me from heaven. Probably not the women gardening in raider leather though...=D =D =D Good times, great video! Blast from the past. Thanks again friend, and Peace!
The magazine displays are easy, you just put them in a rack through the inventory menu it has available. If only everything in this game with space to put things was so simple.
Looking at your settlement, makes me want to totally start from scratch. I like it.
Thank you a tonne! I've been racking my brains trying to figure this out
this is amazing. I've seen a lot of building glitches to make stuff look nicer but I've never seen the rug glitch l. thank you so much
Fantastic tutorial I never knew any of this till now. Very helpful. Thanks heaps.
Nice tricks, mate. And your free flowing chatting while building made me smile. Quite awesome oneliners, actually. :)
I love working with the sanctuary homes to give it the post apocalyptic feel mixed with the old world.
An interesting tip i use for building with the concrete foundation block is to get the internal stair way block to use as a guide for lowering the foundation blocks so they stack perfectly on top of each other. when the terrain goes below the height of the block foundation and its just hovering in the air, store that said block replace it with the stair case block by snapping the top of the staircase block to the top of the foundation.. use the bottom of the stair case as a snapping point to put down the next block. Then remove the stair case and place a foundation at the low point of the staircase by snapping it to the previous foundation block that you just laid. By doing so you can literally snap foundations perfectly on top of each other and wall off your entire settlements. To raise the height to a second floor of foundation blocks use the bottom of the stair case block to snap to the top of the foundation block. you can also wall off the entire settlement in this manor then you can remove two foundation blocks to place a junk gate in its place. Thus creating only one entry point into the base. Its best to find the highest point on the edge of the terrain on the map to use as a starting point for walling off a town.
Hey man! I don't think we've met, but your timing's impeccable. Preston Garvey, Commonwealth Minutemen. Give me 100 caps, babe. Or i'll send you on another settlement protection quest.
To be doing this all without mods is stunning.
Helpful hint for rotating items when you place them, if you move the camera you can get much much more precise rotations since it moves the item along with it. You may have to move your character a little as well, but I find doing that as a fine tune after I use L2/R2 helps so much! Funnily enough, when I first started playing, I thought that moving the player/camera was the only way to rotate things! Haha.
omg, this trick is awesome. :) The sanctuary houses were bugging the hell out of me, especially the roofs. THANKS for sharing!
The fact that you did that on console is impressive. Even with place anywhere on PC building stuff like that is a pain.
this is awesome, I've been wanting to just fix up a already made house but, wasn't sure how to do it, thank - you
well this certainly helped me figure out how to "Home Improvement" my bases
If you guys really want to build, build on specticle island. I have a massive compound that overlooks the front and back of the island. One portion extends out into the water with clear glass floors so you can see the ocean when you walk in, downstairs is a room that houses power armor and I am working on a 4 story tower on the island. It also has full fledge store on the island. Point is, there is PLENTY of room on the island to build.
After managing to spend a decent couple of hours playing it, I think I'm hooked. Hehe. Once you get into the swing of things it's pretty good. In my opinion, it certainly pays to have a production line going of the different wall sections and mats all laid out prior to patching the walls.
Let's hope it's as easy to build the barricades too.
Thanks Dave. :)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH that's how you do that! I never could figure out how everyone was moving entire buildings on fallout.
Thanks mate, much help.
Really enjoying your videos mate. Saw on reddit that you were thinking about doing lets plays, and I can say for sure that I would watch em! You know your stuff, and you've got a pleasant voice.
Fantastic work, thanks for this. Would love to see more settlement tutorials. (Something I'd love to see is how to build a proper support beam for overhangs.)
This just blew my mind. You sir are awesome.
One of my favorites fallout 4 tutorials so far. Thanks! Great video
saw a couple vids prior to this one, looked in the comments and noticed some people saying " who is here from "norespawns", just noticed the name of the channel.. awesome vid. totally gonna try it out since I play on ps4 as well.
Thank you. You stepped up my CivFallout game immensely!
You can snap on a normal door on you're garage. Found out yesterday. Ps the video was super helpful. Thanks! :)
Wish I would have watched this b4 I started my building. I was proud of mine till I seen this video.
Working on PC you catually don't need the rug segment, you can just select the structure using the wall.
