      Stockton was a great PG, but unfortunately he never outshined Malone. Magic was easily the orchestrator of the Lakers. He proved as a ROOKIE he could step up and dominate games without Kareem on the court.
      Isiah best the three best players of his era (Magic, Bird, and Jordan). He was the face of a team that had a mini dynasty run in the last 80s.
      Stockton wasn’t as good as Big O as an individual. It took Stockton FOUR years to even become a starter for the Jazz.
      Gary Payton was better defensively and led a team (with Kemp) to the Finals.
      Jason Kidd took a team full of role players to back to back finals.
      I personally don’t think Stockton can be ranked any higher than 4th or 5th because as great as he was as a player, his individual greatness simply doesn’t outshine any of the other guards I’ve listed. I haven’t even mentioned Steph who easily has a case for top 3.
      Stockton had a insanely long career and he spent practically his entire career playing alongside Karl Malone (and there is absolutely no question that Malone was the leader and best player on those teams).
      I also think Stockton hurt his stock by his performances in the last two finals. They were mediocre AT BEST.

    • @atlien1988
      @atlien1988 4 года назад +1

      TheUndefeatedOfTheEast I definitely think Stockton would’ve been better than Nash. He was better despite playing in a slower, more physical era.
      There’s also no comparison defensively. However, Nash was at the right place at the right time in Phoenix. He was their missing ingredient.

  • @aris_mendez
    @aris_mendez 4 года назад +52

    Stocktons hand eye coordination was off the charts. His ability to thread the needle with either hand was hard to guard. His hands were about as strong as they come. If he got his hands on a ball as a defender , it was his. Stockton would probably average 20ppg and 18 assts in this era His career high is 14.5. Don’t see why he couldn’t get 3-5 more.

    John Stockton also when you count total points accounted for(points from FG and assists) is the all time leader as well. He would have at minimum 51,323 points accounted for. Next in line is Kareem at 49,707. Third is Karl Malone at 47,424.

    John Stockton is so often underrated. When they talk about the Dream Team, people talk like John didn’t belong in it. That is total BS. He’s a better passer, better defense, all-around tougher guy than Isaiah. I know Isaiah was great too but John was at his level. I hate how Stephen A totally disrespects Stockton. Chris proved just how great John was. But John was quiet, not charismatic, played for a small team, and it didn’t make him popular. I think Stockton and Malone were probably the second greatest duo ever. They just got beat by the best duo.
    I just loved watching Stockton and Malone play, even when they played against my Rockets.

    • @hennylo68

      When people say he didn't belong on that time it is so laughable. If you look at both stats from both players in the 91-92 season which was the dream team year. Stockton's statistics are way better. Isaiah averaged 18 ppg 7.3 apg 1.5 spg while shooting 43% and 29% from 3pts.
      Stockton averaged 16ppg 13.7 apg 3 spg

      @@hennylo68 isiah was injured in 91,92 just stop it. Look at the playoff averages and results, Isiah all day everyday and you know it. Stockton is a great low stakes player. Isiah is high stakes nosebleeds. Easy money here.

    • @thereisnoend
      @thereisnoend 4 года назад

      @AnEn I absolutely understand your position the stats can be debatable considering Stockton played in the zero defense Western conference his entire career. It's ok that you include Isiahs injured year totals as he was busy winning championships and finals mvp during that stint. KJ and Mark Price were comparable to Stockton..all were a lower level class of player though.
      People act as though Stockton was light years ahead of Isiah, steal averages were nearly identical. Stockton is a Systems player that mastered Sloans system. He was not a superposition player, Malone was also a good system player which left Stockton wide open resulting in a highly inflated fg percentage.
      Check the playoff videos, players like Isiah Bird MJ Magic were always the primary target of the opposition's defense, Stockton was not. Only 2 All-NBA 1st team selections in 19 years. Put Stockton on the Bad Boys instead of Isiah and they never get past CLEVELAND or Atlanta let alone contend vs. Boston.
      Two different conferences with 2 different styles of play...lol that's why inflated stats never won championships..same as Drexler in Portland. He needed a superposition player like Olajuwon who was light years ahead and better than Malone.

    • @thereisnoend
      @thereisnoend 4 года назад

      @AnEn ah yes, If I recall correctly Stockton only played 1 year, if at all under layden and had good numbers. Stockton was not even able to beat hourly Rickey Green back then lol. When you use terms like inferior in comparing Isiah to Stockton it's clear you view the nba in 2D.
      Stocktons stats, including splits are all consistent with minimum variance no matter the scenario vs.east, away, home. Defenses were not overly concerned with his production. Even in the contrasting styles of play Isiah was responsible for more points per game than Stockton.
      There is no contest in career playoff stats, Isiah clearly was better over his career excluding championships and finals mvp. The flavor of point guard preference is dependent on goals of the team.
      You cant be on a team that loses the nba finals in less than 7 games twice and be in any conversation about being the best. Something was missing in Stocktons bag of tricks. Stockton was a good player no doubt but hes more in the class of Mark Jackson than Magic Johnson.
      And yes, pound for pound Isiah was better than Magic...put Isiah with Kareem and Worthy...lakers results would've been the same or even better.

    • @thereisnoend
      @thereisnoend 4 года назад

      I respect your hustle and argument. Stockton had one season as full-time PG playing under Layden with Malone. So turns out Malone WAS the system not Jerry Sloan. We will also ignore the loooong history of Jazz scorekeeper hometeam stat inflation practices.
      MJs injuries matter as much as Isiah being injured all of 91 and from there onward. Plus the all nba 3rd team wasnt around until late 80's. my point was that Stockton played almost 20 years with only 2 1st team selections. And least we ignore that Isiahs stats vs.the west were a full percentage point higher.
      Any 1st round nba point guard in that position is going to put up equal numbers in that system. Jason Kidd, KJ, tony parker, Nash and Mark Jackson were on par with Stockton. None of which were capable of being a number 1 option on an nba finals team.
      If point guard play only entails assists in the regular season then Stockton was the best of all time at the position. Isiah was still a better basketball player than Stockton even under that myopic view. Lakers do not win if Stockton is their point guard instead of Magic, neither do the Pistons if Stockton is there instead of Isiah.
      Its different levels to each position. Isiah and Magic were the final bosses for point guards of their era. Stockton was a solid #2 man ala Pippen or Lamar Odom. He played his role as well as could be played. Perhaps he had it in him to be the #1 option and lead his team though his career playoff stats and results say different.
      Career Playoffs Stockton as #2 option - 165 Starts, *89 Wins, 93 Losses*;
      Isiah as #1 option 109 Starts, 70 Wins, 41 Losses. Results matter.

Jerry Sloan would bench him for that. Stockton was a great 3pt shooter, ft% shooter, fg%. #1 all time in steals and assists and averaged about 17 pts and 12 assists in his prime. @ismail adam So somehow making it to the second team 5 times isn't impressive? He was the second best defensive player at his position all those years and somehow that isn't impressive? What a joke.

      @ismail adam How is making 2nd all defensive teams not elite defense. It means you're the 2nd best defensive player at your position. That's elite. Iverson would have become an elite defensive player had he stayed at PG. He had to guard guys half a foot taller than him and still lead the league in steals 4 times.

    One of the great 1-2 combinations of all-time. If these guys were going to win a championship then I thought it was going to be that lockout year in 1999. It was the year after they lost to MJ and the Bulls. That team was history after the lockout and the league was wide open during that year. But I believe they were ousted by Portland in 1999. Then the Kobe-Shaq-Phil dynamic took over the west. 1999 really could have been Utah's one championship.

    • @jaycee9153
      @jaycee9153 4 года назад

      True. They definitely didn't do themselves a favor by only appearing against MJ. Utah would have been heavily favored over the 6ers, Knicks, Pacers.

    • @RobertPaceII

      @@jaycee9153 100%. Even if the Heat would have lived up to their record that year and not gotten beat by the 8 seed Knicks in the first round. Utah was a 3 seed and they were still regarded as the majority favorite heading into the 1999 playoffs. Just wasn't meant to be.

    Wilt Chamberlain was asked in 1988 who he would draft first in starting a team and he said " the little guy John Stockton".
    When Stockton was young he was a far better athlete than people remember when they saw him in the Finals when he was 36 years old. The Jazz were a small market team that took a long time to get the pieces (role players) in Utah to help Stockton and Malone. If they had the supporting cast the Lakers and Celtics could afford then I really think the Jazz in the Stockton and Malone Era would have a number of Championship rings.
    Stockton and Malone went to the Western Conference Finals 5 times. The West was brutal in those days. But in the 1988 Playoffs in the 2nd Round the Jazz took the back to back Champion Lakers, one of the best teams of all time to a Game 7 with Stockton, Malone and some good but average players. In Game 5 the Jazz would have gone up 3-2 in the series if not for a last second shot in the LA Forum. Stockton had 23 points & 24 assists and was everywhere defensively, getting his hands on the ball everytime you blinked. The Jazz won Game 6 after that heartbreaking loss and forced a Game 7 before the Lakers sent on to win another Title.

    Great players, no excuse for them not to win title in the 90s. Kobe was in his second year, Duncan was a rookie and Hakeem, Barkley and Drexler was old. Only team with two top 50 players for the whole decade.

    • @LovingTinha
      @LovingTinha 4 года назад

      The other teams weren't the only ones that were old, the Jazz primed at same time that Jordan got his second 3 peat. It's rough like that. Can't hold that against them.

    • @antondennard
      @antondennard 4 года назад

      @AnEn Based on what you wrote, their was no reason Utah shouldn't have one a title. They blew it, everything else is an excuse. Two
      HOF players and a coach for a decade. You should win one. Any other duo we would hold to the same standard.

    • @antondennard
      @antondennard 4 года назад

      @AnEn As far as small markets, It was more about the city of Utah than being in a small market. That is another story I can get deeper on. To me its not even about the Bulls even though they blews game based on being so predictable on offense. In the 90s in the West you had 2 HOFs for the whole decade. Malone and Stcokton was responsible for alot of missed opportunities. they're is no reason for them not to win a title. I put that on 3 people. Stockton for not shooting more. Malone for missing key free throws and turnovers. Sloan for being predictable. the other team scouts and watch film too. Now if your get swept or losing in 5 becuase the other team is that much better I get it. But losing 4 when Stockton goes 4 for 14 in game 5. Game 7 Malone misses 6 free throws and shoot 36%. Flu game Stockton is -33 on the court. Game 6 you lose by 4 but Malone is 7 for 15 from the line. That't not about the team that's the responsibility of the star.

    • @antondennard
      @antondennard 4 года назад

      @AnEn I meant a lot of players don't want to live in Salt Lake. Thats not about the market its about the city and state of Salt Lake City, Utah. All the players you name won multiple titles. So even when they had bad games or series they came back to win because they were all-time great players. I wasn't even talking about losing in the
      Finals. I'm talking for 12 years the even could not get out the West. That has nothing to do with Jordan, even if Malone and Stockton blew a couple of Finals games. You metion 99-03, Everbody who know basketball knew the team out West was going to win the title. No matter what. So I really don't understand why is that a matter when it comes to Stockton and Malone. Your making excuses because of their roster. I would agree if its LeBron in 2007. Not when you have two so called two 5 at there position ever.

    • @antondennard
