Since you established that the ABA was at least as good and the NBA, Julius Erving should be credited with being a 4-time MVP and a 3-time champion. Dr. J's ranking among all-time great players should be top 10 - right there with Kobe and Lebron.
Facts
He's definitely in the GOAT convo, there are even some who consider him the greatest. It's a thick discussion, and I don't give the crown to Michael or anyone for that matter.
Facts
Dr. J was my first favorite player. Yes, he was as big in the 1970's as anyone in sports. Great post!
Well done Chris! I'm tired of trying to explain how incredible the "DOCTAH" was in his prime!
I think he's better than Kareem Abdul-jabar
You cant. Lol just think those who grew up on Jordan trying to explain him to their kids and grand kids fighting saying how with him there wouldnt be. Thats what fans of 70s 80s era basket ball been doing for over 30 years.
Kareem had Magic for like 13,14 years, Dr. j had Moses for like 4 seasons
@@guillermovazquez1084 his point one of the greatest. A template of which pattern their game off of....thats the man who Jordan knew his style he had to surpass. Just like wilkens, carter and most high flyers of the late 80s early 90s knew was the standard.
The father of all NBA Superstars... Dr J.
The sole reason that the ABA-NBA merger happened The Doctor Julius Erving
Hey Chris I love these segments, please keep them coming... thank you for the one on Ewing!!
100%
Dam good one on an underappreciated 7footer who's body work through out his college & pro career is up their with the great 7footers.
I think julius erving is the greatest of all time...
I touch & agree with u 100000000 percent!!!!!
He's one of the greatest of all time but he's the most exciting ever
@@1990758 Da Doctor started slamming over 7footers way before anyone FACTS taking it to the big Guy when he thought he own the paint!!!😜
@@eddiewallace7709 exactly and he really Dunked On You not this BS they have today
@@1990758 Like total facials in the purest form😜!!
Long before kids wanted to "Be like Mike", they wanted to be like Dr. J. I spent countless hours playing basketball in my driveway & trying to replicate his moves.
His finesse layups and finger rolls too!
Dr. J was the best and he did it in old school sneakers. lol
lol they werent old school then. i dont think he'd be more dominant in a pair of Jordans.
@Nathaniel Baxter what me and u can do in chucks, is nothing what the legends can do, in flip flops. that dnt make sense my bro lol
@@JeremiahJai ...If you can't jump while wearing canvas sneakers, then you can't jump, PERIOD!!!
Mt Rushmore is where he belongs Dr Julius Errrrrving
Thanks Chris for Justifying the facts. Especially the point of his accomplishments in both leagues combined since he was the cause of the merger. We wouldn't have all the teams without his power moves in the 70s.
People need to watch the Dr. J documentary. Pure class, unbelievably talented, great spokesman, family man, super athlete...the list goes on
You speak the truth...that Dr J documentary is so good..so good in fact I've watched it about 3 times..one of the best parts is when Darryl Dawkins aka Chocalate Thunder is describing Dr J as having "air brakes"...Darryl said "I was like somewhat of a little girl in awe..."Oh Doc..I see how you do it"...was something of that effect
@@gdub454 Dr. J wa my Dad's favorite. I liked Magic. As I get older I understand why. With Dr.J it was an all around thing
This was a nice segment. We might wanna reconsider his place in history amongst the All Time greats. He had great numbers too. 2 way wing
He's cemented in my hall. One of the truly greatest of the great.
Top 15 ever I always argue when people dont show him love and look only at his NBA stats
As great as Julius "The Doctor" Errrrrrrrrrrvvvvvving!!! was in the NBA his greatest years were really in the ABA and many didn't get to see him dominate there. He truly is one of the greatest ambassadors for the game of basketball. Class and professionalism personified...and the doctor always made house calls lol. Great segment Chris Broussard. You should do a segment on Darryl Dawkins...I always say that Shaq reminded me of a of Darryl Dawkins 3.0 with the same time of infectious personality.
Maybe his greatest years "statistically", some would argue he was more impressive in the NBA though.
@@stephenaintshyt Great point!
He did a sneaker ad with Larry Bird and when he went to say - “Like the Doctor says....” and Bird held up the sneaker and said - “Take two of these and call me in the morning.”
🤣🤣 that's dope 🔥🔥
I had the absolute honor of meeting this man when I caddied for him. So unbelievably humble. You would have never guessed he was the greatest dunker of all time by how cool and and down to earth he is.
Awesome segment. This is the first of these I've seen but I'm about to go search for more. Looking for one on Elgin Baylor. Right now, I'm a little tired of sports commentators slobbering about Zion with phrases like..."we've never seen a guy like this before"....fact is.....we have. It was Elgin Baylor.
That’s what I’ve been sayin. Totally agree. I played Dr. J when I was a kid. I called it!!
Nobody finished with the flair and grace the way The Doctor did. He was a cut above everybody finishing with a flair.
Thanks Chris for refreshing my memory of how great the Doctor was. You're right, they definitely need to add his ABA point total to his NBA total! Come on!
Facts. I mean it was a merger so it's a disgrace not to.
I also remember that he was not playing on teams that called for him to "do it all, while the rest of the team stood and watched." In fact, team basketball was the common thing, unlike today, where the highest paid players are expected by fans and media to control the ball and "take over" the game...better known as NBA MeBall (the others - better known as 'role' players - more often than not - are expected to simply stand at their designated spots on the court - while Mr.Superstar looks for his shot - then expected to produce when the ball comes their way), except G.S. Warriors coaches and players (and very few others) know there is more to the game than that. LeBron understands the game, greatly, but fans and media criticize him, unless he plays selfishly.
@@RM-ut9wy winning basketball has always been and always will be TEAM basketball. He's a loser and his record justifies that statement
They did it in the 80s or after he retired then they took it away. A lot of players with slide down the ladder and they don't want that
Thanks for bring Dr J back up to the fore front. Doc was one of the best ever. The doctor was incredibly one of the most exciting players of all time. I go back and watch Dr J in the NBA finals against Portland in 1977. He made some incredible dunks and moves in that series. Doc even had his own movie the fish that saved Pittsburgh. Great family film. I would doc up against anyone in his prime. One of the most gifted players of time if not the most gifted
Doc and I went to the same high school so I've been watching him since 1967 so you don't have to tell me what kind of player he was👍
Exactly I remember him from the ABA he play for my king the Philadelphia 76ers we both know all about him
The best part about Doc's legacy is that he became a legend by word of mouth. Fans would see him play and have to tell everyone they knew about what they saw that night. Hubie Brown said that Doc would come into your building and turn your crowd against you. Opposing coaches would tell their players not to get caught up watching Doc do his thing on the court. Just remembering the excitement we felt as kids when we knew that the Sixers were going to be on tv..Man, do I miss those days.
DR J is my favorite player of ALLTIME. FACTS
Nice Dr. J props Chris Broussard 👏🏽
One of my top 5 players of all time. No debate.
Thank you!
His biography was the first book I read in English. Chris, you nailed it!
We all tuned in to see the Afro fly.
Doc once said he got hair care tips from Darnell Hillman. Hard to see today’s players doing things like that.
Thanks old scool for this education.
Im 50 yrs old.
The 2 guys who brought me to sports was walter payton (im from chy) and dr j.
I absolutely knew NOTHING about sports until these 2 highly intelligent gentlemen broke me in.
Thanks!
This video was well represented. Thanks Chris.
Don't forget about David Thompson who was a dunker extraordinaire.
jholliday3 ...Unfortunately, The Skywalker took the easy out...Drugs! Thank God the latter is okay!
I always said the Doctor was super nice he had crazy hang time. He is the reason we have the dunk contest. And I always said it he's the first to dunk from the foul line.
I remember him beginning his leap at the top of the key, on fast breaks, more than once.
Yes, the Doc was fantastic. Lest we forget though, that back in the day Wilt used to dunk free throws from the foul line. They literally had to change the rules of professional basketball to make the game more difficult for Wilt Chamberlain.
Thank you thank you thank you....Doc is my all time favorite player. I'm biased as a 57 year old Philadelphia native. I remember all the finals we lost, getting so close over and over..."We owe you one"...dude I cried
That's right me to North Philadelphia
"Well, well, well." Well done Chris. Very well done. Well written and delivered. I enjoyed that. I love the "Y'all just don't know" premise, because, being "old" I think it all the time, because within the fan demographics, the arguments are raised and discussed by folks who are 15 - 35 (even 40) and the sports memory is even shorter. Seems y'all in the media and fans have entered into this GOAT argument with a fury in the past few years. Anyone retired beyond a 5 year induction period gets forgotten about because we are watching "the greatest to ever do it" after 4 years in the pros. (Besides, I believe the top players from most any (modern) era could play, compete and win in any era; almost any sport.) But I digress. Did I say "well done" Chris?
Broussard said it perfectly. As great as he was, the cameras missed most of the Docs best. After several years of proving his greatness (7 years) he was finally seen. Who knows what his stats would have ended up.
Facts in the Purest Form!!! Enough said!!!
I love this commentary, I also watched Dr. J do his thing back then. He was unstoppable.
Love this segment! Keep these coming Fox Sports 👍
I now have a newfound respect for Chris! Thanks for laying it all out on the line! The baffled King Dr. J composed a lot of hallelujahs!
Don't forget Chris that Wilt dunked free throw shots so much, after taking 3 long steps, that the league changed the rules so that players have to shoot free throws from behind the line.
Real talk Chris I am 59 and I tell the fellas at the barber shop all the time. That the NBA you watch today and the way it is marketed started with Dr J period.
Excellent !!!!
One of your best Mr.Broussard
When I was a kid, I had a Dr. J dunk poster on my wall.
Dr.J is the father of Jordan,Kobe,Kemp,Carter etc!!!
Preach 🙏🏽
Thank you so much for this, Mr. Broussard. I was a Boston kid, but my dad taught me to revere him. Only thing missing were three highlights. So so overdue for such an incredibly overlooked titan of the game.
Thanks Chris for letting these youngsters know about the Dr. j
I'm about to be 40 and i didn't see Dr J in his prime. I remember my Pops talking about him though, the stuff of legends.
These videos are Amazing! Keep them coming
I'm 23 years old and I watched dr j in game 6 of the 76 aba finals vs the nuggets and I watched some of his playoff games vs Boston and a few finals games vs Portland and the lakers. He's incredible great at attacking the basket could finish with either hand a great rebounder and shot blocker. Dr j top 10 all time for me
I love these, keep em coming.
I'm actually loving this series! Keep em coming fox!
Julius Erving a.k.a. Dr.J is the only basketball player in the history of basketball to dunk over every Dominating rim protecting center in history of the ABA and NBA
Chris, well done my man. Yes, the Doctor was one of a kind. As a longtime Celtics fan and man in his 50s, Mr. Julius Erving is an all-time great. Psst, my mom took me to see, ‘The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh’ because Julius Erving was one of many Hoop stars that was in it. Truly, class personified on and off the court. Thanks again for this video because the younger generation definitely needs to know the accomplishments of this man. I am sure you may have had some rights issues procuring many of his highlights but I wish that some of the highlights that you spoke of could have been included in your piece. Oh well, thank God for RUclips.
Exactly! One of his more viscous dunks that I've never ever seen again was against 7'2 Robert Parish of the Celtics. He literally posted up Parish and turned around and bashed in Parish's face. It was so shocking to witness. I said to myself he's not from this planet!
He may be the most underrated player in NBA history. Like I don’t think highly of him until I hear about someone who watched him and say how great he is
Thank you Chris much props
I can still hear the Philly announcer introducing Doc, "...Julius Eeeeerviing!
Dave zinkoff
I always look at Broussard as SAS's long lost brother for FOX lol
Nate Tiny Archibald and Julius Erving are the reasons I became interested in basketball
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!! Let Em know Chris!!!
I was a kid in the early 70's where the love of basketball hit me..In those days of black and white tv with rabbit ears for antennas, you don't get much channels..so all I was able to see was a few NBA games here and there.. Lew Alcindor aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar became my favorite player..I even imitate his skyhook ( which I did it so well that my little league coach encourage me to use it as often as I can ), but when the ABA merged with the NBA, it was like a nuclear explosion in the basketball universe, and that was due to one person and one person only...Dr 'J '... I finally was able to watch a lot of his games..and I tell you what, he instantly became my ALL time favorite player..Even to THIS DAY, after seeing many greats ( from the mid 70s to now ) that came and went, The Doctor is STILL my favorite..He was such an inspiration to millions.and I was one of them..because I instantly started to imitate his moves..all the other kids start to call me ' Mini-Doctor '.. lol. My only regret is that I never got to see him play in person...On MY Mt Rushmore..he ranks #1..
Speak on it!
Love the good doctor!!!! He was a smooth dude!
PREEEEEEECH!!!! THE DOCTOR was my favorite player!!!
Love these
Factor in his ABA contributions he's probably top 10 all time. And definitely one of the top 3 SFs.
My favorite all time basketball player, who I got to meet a few times
My favorite, also, but you, lucky dog, got to meet him.
He dunked on some of the best 7-footers in the NBA my favorite is the one on Bill Walton 1977 game 6. He dunked on Bill Walton and threw the ball at him
TRUTH!
This needs video footage of the game
Great segment. Doc was the greatest dunker of all time and one of the most creative players of all time. He made up moves on the spot. The dunk over Cooper was in an ‘83 regular season game, not the playoffs.
Great Video!!!!
Doc is top 10
By top 10 I assume you mean top 10 dunker?
He is top 10 Icons, top 1 most impactful on entire sport and development, top ten scorers, top ten greatest all time, innovator of aerial assault style, top 3 man's man players ever.
Haj Johnson gotcha if that’s the case I can agree
@Rich Decker thanks Rick he was before my time but I studied him. Deserves more credit
@@futurekillerful Have to look back at the times they were first intimidated by his style lol
Fantastic video!!!
All 70s line up

C Kareem

Imagine that team on the court!!
Beautiful Video on the Legend. Shii now I know all of his accomplishments
Great short video about Dr.J.
One of the best ever. He is in my top-20 all time. And 3rd greatest SF only behind to LeBron and Bird.

Very well said.💪🏾✊🏽
Broussard, "you kids just don't know" is my favorite series currently covering B-Ball, but Bro......How could u leave out "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh"? During that era, was probably the best film featuring a sports figure besides Ali in "The Greatest.."
Dr. J was a superstar. I'm sure Jordan was inspired by that film too.
Julius Irving wearing all-stars definitely influenced me to purchase my 1st pair.
I cut so many lawns mannnnn, I almost passed out. But I had to have 'em...
Good video! ✌️
Chris is a real solid dude. Dr. J. was crazy popular.
When greatness meets class...
(standing handclap) Chris, thank you for schooling folks on who Dr. J is. Doc has been overlooked for so long but his influence on the game is still evident in today's game with the high flying, aerial dunks that we see today. If not for Doc, today's game would be so much different and the Michael Jordan that we know today would not be the same Jordan. And also thank you for setting the record straight about the competitiveness of the ABA. One key fact I like to add about the quality of the ABA....the year after the merger, the 1977 NBA All Star game featured a total of 10 former ABA players between both rosters. And that's not counting Hall of Famers Artis Gilmore, Spencer Haywood, and Moses Malone who didn't make the all star team that year.
🐐🔥🙌🏾
I love these little historical facts Chris gives to inform these Millennial’s
Thank you.
He is the greatest dunker, DR. J !
Dr.J was & is class personified, both on and off the court
forgot he had his own movie also, Fish that Save Pittsburg
There’s Still Dr jays stores around ! Love these short vids✔️
Do you remember the one when he dumped on Bill Walton and threw the ball at him
Add the ICEMAN.
Yep.
Iceman waz cooool. Yet he wasn't Evr-ing!!!!!
Now you kids know how good Julius Dr. J Erving was.
So many all time greats being ignored.
You gotta do George Gervin now.
GREAT 👍🏾 VIDEO Broussard!!!
Sounds like a really cool time, you could go back in time
Nice job! I saw one of those NBA/ABA exhibition games. During warm-ups, Doc took off near the free throw line, then boggled my mind when he seemed to elevate to a higher angle mid-flight and dunk. Still don't know how he did that.
I bet half of today's NBA players don't know the ABA and NBA play an exhibition game I guarantee you nobody at ESPN remembers.
I like these videos
Definitely my favorite one
GOAT!! HANDS DOWN. MOST CLASSIEST!
That's right I tell them about Julius Erving the doc
Facts.
I love this series. You kids just don't know!!
