God almighty Billy Strings is one of my favorite people. I was just tripping this evening thinking of how my wife left. This is fitting. I've got the music of Billy Strings and I've got my own dust in a baggie to deal with it.
riiiiight!!! seriously. I have the same 6 strings, I have a flatpick, I have two good hands with ten good fingers. In other words, he and I have the same tools. How someone can play so fast--and coax sounds like that out of an acoustic guitar--is beyond me. Seems impossible. Yet, it clearly isn't! Anyways, nothing left to do but smile smile smile, and practice and woodshed and practice some more. Maybe, someday, ya never know, I'll somehow be able to create similar--even 1/10 as good--sounds. Ya never know. Imma keep trying. There must be a way.
At the end of the video he said hes not sure where the tunes from and says it might be Doc(Doc Watson) , Well like many new artists sadly, they don't know where the songs they're playing came from or even how to originally play it, well.. ill tell you, this is a classic redone by many, this is related more to an old country version from the 70s. The original very first recording was written by Sam Chatmon, of the Mississippi Sheiks in 1922, recorded in 1927, with a couple of his half brothers, one being Bo carter. I definitely recommend searching for Sam Chatmons(writer of song) version recorded in 1978, and the Mississippi sheiks being the first to ever record the song or play it. I cant tell you how to play there version but i know its done in a lot lower guitar tuning then what Billy Strings and Doc Watson use.
I remember I heard a really frantic version of this that is similar to the version Billy plays here. It had the whole fiddle and banjo break treatment with High/Low vocal parts. Could have sworn it was The Stanley Brothers but all I can find is Ralph's version... Maybe the Louvin Brothers? Anybody know what I'm talking about? Anyway, for those wondering, this Doc Watson version is probably what Billy is referring to, towards the end of the video: ruclips.net/video/Y1q4Eb34mwM/видео.html Of course, nothing beats the Mississippi Sheiks' version in my opinion.
He said “that’s how you play it if you had a festival”, I had previously watched a video of him playing it at Grey Fox in 2019 with Molly Tuttle. As a young musician it’s inspiring to see him accomplish his dream
I know he gives a ton of credit to his dad for shaping him into the musician he's become, and rightly so, but he has an incredible amount of natural talent, and that should not be overshadowed.
I am assuming this great blue grass arrangement is truer to the original composition than the very bluesy/hard rock Cream version where Jack Bruce sings lead and Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker contribute. I grew up being very familiar with the latter and am 72 now.
Obviously every guitar player wants to play in front of an arena full of people chanting your name, but I think this is all what we really want. A warm fire, a decent guitar, and a few good buddies to play for. This is what music is, and why I think it’s so beautiful.

Bryan Sutton, Kody Kilby, Zeb Snyder, Molly Tuttle, Jake Workman, the list goes on and on.
"Do you always play it in Em, in the chorus?" When you hand around with people who know nothing but good times and music. The man shows up to a fire with a guitar, as it should be, as it was intended.
Happy Fourth of July my fellow Americans!
Thanks again Lower Standards for the upload.
Wow this is from before I ever saw Billy the NYE show in Pontiac. That was my introductory set of shows. I have loved the band ever since. He looks so young here.
Billy Strings has to be one of the word's greatest pickers. Incredible.
Thank you so much for posting another one of these gems....i really needed this after today's tragedy, which happened 15 minutes from my house....and about 15 minutes from the place where i first saw Billy and the Boys play in 2018....
On a brighter note, sure looks like you guys busted up a bunch of pallets....except for the nails, they're great for burning.
MOVE.....MOVE NOW!!!
@@joecochran9976 Move where? I' happy where i'm at.
Awesome! Thanks for posting, and Billy, thanks for playing!
God almighty Billy Strings is one of my favorite people. I was just tripping this evening thinking of how my wife left. This is fitting. I've got the music of Billy Strings and I've got my own dust in a baggie to deal with it.
I think it is beautiful to hear him play with a few flaws. Makes it real..like you are there. Awesome video !
I wish I could play half as good as Billy!!!! Well done buddy!!!!
riiiiight!!!
Only three strings?
@@Onionbaron pretty funny stuff!
This is usually the first song I play when I busk, just about every day for the last month or 2. I love how everyone plays it a little different.
Best song I've woken up to this fine Sunday.
😘💕
When he recorded this ...He was sitting on top of the world & didn't know it yet! Sheer Raw talent!
It's been so long simce I spent a night around a fire like that... brings back so many damn memories...
Alter Schwede, was für ein geiler Sound. Danke Mr. Billy Strings!
Holy hell, how does that guitar not catch on fire, again, another example of Billy doing something with an acoustic few others can.
a good take of this by billy would be AWESOME to hear live
Geez Louise your freaking amazing lord bless this man! 🙏
Anyway, for those wondering, this Doc Watson version is probably what Billy is referring to, towards the end of the video:

Of course, nothing beats the Mississippi Sheiks' version in my opinion.
fingers...hands..posture.....goot music doesnt lie...raw talent
I'd kill for an album with all of his solo stuff
Check out billy strings!! Buddy is on top of the world
Not completely solo, but check out his album ME/AND/DAD with his dad, Terry Barber. All the trad stuff from how Terry Barber taught him to play.
He said “that’s how you play it if you had a festival”, I had previously watched a video of him playing it at Grey Fox in 2019 with Molly Tuttle. As a young musician it’s inspiring to see him accomplish his dream
The crackling of the fire makes it sound like a record.... that's amazing.
I’m that guy at our camp outings that will play as long as my friends will listen, and I will always do that because I love it
I've watch this at least six times and love it! Yet this is the first time I've noticed he branch fall at 1:20!
Thanks for sharing this with the world.
Excellent! Whether it is Billy Strings, Mississippi Fred McDowell, or Joe Pass, I love listening to real music stripped down to the bare essentials.
I have no words for how much i loved this. Edit....love this.
I thought my video was at 2x speed this guy is awesome
I love times like this sitting around a fire with a guitar
This is fire fr!! Keep it up ive been getting trashed listening to your music for a while now!! You fuckin rock!!!
Love hearing the way he plays it at the end.
I know he gives a ton of credit to his dad for shaping him into the musician he's become, and rightly so, but he has an incredible amount of natural talent, and that should not be overshadowed.
Billy is the man.
Thank you so much for posting these gems from the past!
❤❤ that comentary at the end and playing is why its fascinating...
"I usually play it like this" 🐐🐐🐐
With that crackling fire sounds a lot like an old vinyl record.
Be sure to hit like and subscribe to my peaceful channel with no videos!
Just the sound of a shovel in the fire is music to my ears!
Talent don't care about the world or the man, it makes its own. Doc Watson woulda loved this kid.
I am assuming this great blue grass arrangement is truer to the original composition than the very bluesy/hard rock Cream version where Jack Bruce sings lead and Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker contribute. I grew up being very familiar with the latter and am 72 now.
I like the finger style version better, but he's a gifted player either way.
Bob wills version is my favorite
