You are so right. Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith, Shawn Lane, Michael Cleveland, Molly Tuttle, Declan O'Rourke, Paco de Lucia, Darrell Scott, etc., etc. The list goes on for miles. You've heard of them because talent matters to you. You can recognize it. The next time you are watching people around music, look at them. They don't usually care so much about music or talent. Another thing about Billy is his approach to his popularity explosion. He's still the same Billy. No fronts no b.s he's an artist and music needed the artist back in it.

@Anonymous-sf5pf 100% serious. Dumb people think Bob Dylan was a genius. People who know music know that Bob Dylan never hit a note, never played a complex piece of music and never wrote anything that was above a middle school level.
I am so lucky to be alive when Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Glenn Campbell, Jerry Reid, Jimi Hendrix were on this earth. And now this guy. He is all the previous rolled into one. Unbelievable talent.
Funny (or maybe not) that you should mention Doc Watson. That was Billy's hero and primary inspiration. One of his others (not mentioned) is Jerry Garcia. Hence, his covers of a number of Jerry's tunes.
Long as you know he’s covering bob dylan, amazingly I’ll add. If you haven’t heard the original, I highly recommend. I do love the pickin style billy added
Kirk Hope I mean it’s not really necessary to explain to us that he’s covering Bob Dylan I think we get it.. can’t we just give him praise for being a rad musician no matter what song he’s singing or covering
Been playing for 20 years, recently got into bluegrass because of this fine musician. Replicating his work is HARD, I mean really...really...hard. So I am in awe of his talent. I will listen to his music for the rest of my life. But the kicker is I’m English, so I never grew up with this style of music. Great work Young man.
It's funny because I live in southern Pennsylvania and playing all the great British rock music and you live there playing bluegrass. The world is getting smaller.
It is miraculous to see, in the ocean of mediocre and shitty music today, someone like Billy who is a true student of the guitar. His heart is about music, not ego and hubris. I love it.
In all fairness, some of the shit music today is rather good. Listen to 'Levitating' by Dua Lipa, it's *incredibly* good for a generic chick-pop song. Message In A Bottle, recorded by Taylor Swift, is very good too, it has a great melody.
@@devilsoffspring5519 Agreed re the songs - but I think the production of much pop today is way overdone, and won't age well - Billy, Molly Tuttle and friends record it straight up - the sound will age better
@@lukehauser1182 Fair enough, but remember that for FM-radio-friendly pop music the heavily produced sound is a part of the musical style. This kind of stuff can work well with a more direct approach to recording, because the listener can focus on one guy with his guitar instead of being flooded with tons of reverb, Auto-Tune, synth drums & bass, all of the staples of normal popular music.

He's really young..20? He played heavy metal through High School but got wrapped up in drugs and lost several close friends to them. So, he went back to his acoustic roots. He is beyond a good player..a genius..and players all over the world see it. He is gaining a massive following very quickly. Mainstream? No. He has turned down multiple record deals to do it his own way.
Probably because he plays bluegrass....its a niche that has some of the most amazing musicians you'll ever hear but it does seem to confine them to a niche. Billy does combine influences though. He's bloody amazing. There are good videos of bluegrass guutarists trying to watch his videos and walk you through what he's doing and the shocked expressions on their face as he cranks it up are priceless.
He is a generational talent. We are lucky indeed. He seems like he has it together too. If he keeps it between the lines and stays on these bangers hes been making, he will very quickly become a legend.

Thanks Billy, your music soothed my newborn son to sleep and helped him do the enormous shit he's been backing up for two days. No joke his eyes rolled back and he let rip when this song came on. That's one powerful guitar brother.
Such a privilege absolutely awesome can't believe people don't know what talent truly is! And I just accidentally clicked on the link and wow. Great description
It may be a concentration thing. I keep my eyes closed when I play. If I see something that distracts me I’ll crash a song. I have the attention span of a ferret on Mountain Dew.
It’s incredible amount of playing. It’s not just the fingers you have to get through, which sucked by the way I can’t even play guitar very long without your fingers getting all torn up, but if you do it enough you’ll get some calluses. But just the way this guy can sing and play at the same time, both difficult, and like you said I was close that’s pretty amazing too he probably could play fretless
I wish everyone can understand how difficult is what he's doing. I've been playing guitar for almost 15 years, and I don't even dare to try to play this. The way he plays is absolutely incredible, and he can even sing over it. Cheers from Argentina
its crazy because you could make it sound about 90% as good by just grabbing the chords and faking through the strumming and picking. But to get every note perfect like that takes 90% of the work.
Same. As someone who can play the regular finger picking version by Dylan pretty well/fast I felt confident I could add a few of Billy's embellishments. I just tried that that first C > G > A with the cool melody he does... realized instantly how wrong I was! Should not have dared
Check out the Clapton version from the early 90's in New York City. Unreal and smokin'! The audio doesn't even do it justice because the backup band was G.E. Smith and the SNL band and they were in a total state of disbelief watching him. It's a million degrees different than this but just shows how versatile Dylan's music is when in capable hands.
Albert Lankford Yep, you said it, brother! Billy Strings shows to the younger generation how cool Americana music really is. In addition to rock, heavy metal, and alt music, I spent years exposing my kids to folk, old country, and bluegrass. Now my 22 year old son sends me this vid to check out. And he’s got tickets to see Billy in pittsburgh in April. That’s satisfying.
My cousin and I were supposed to see Billy last Summer but thanks to Covid we couldn’t. He passed last night after a short illness and listening to this song felt like a message from him. Thanks
I’ve had a stack of music on my phone for years, some shared by friends that I never have much time for. One day bout five years ago I was bored as hell with the normal plays and artists and I was in a tree stand in Stella Ne deer hunting and I played a greatest hits of Bob Dylan with ear buds in The thing that struck me was his voice wasn’t polished but he gave it 100% in every song. I respected that at first then the lyrics pulled me in further and further and with out naming them all it touched my heart like maybe no one else ever before. I’m 60 years old and I am a blessed man for finding Bob Dylan. None of the people I used to tell about this genius would listen to him. I always tried to say start with Forever Young and listen to the lyrics and feelings in this man’s voice. You know how we age and get further apart from people, I don’t know if they ever did give it a listen but if they didn’t, it’s their loss. Never even saw a deer that day ha ha who cares I got Dylan
Lordy!! I'm proud this kid chose this beautiful Bob Dylan song from the 60's....he breathes life into a song that deserves to be heard by a new generation...and Billy does it with flawless interaction with his acoustic guitar...Talent like this can't be bought..Thank You Billy Strings...You make my heart SOAR!!!!!
Pure MAGIC! My eyes are watering with emotion after such an aural treat and witnessing the facial expressions from the wonderful musician singing one of my all time favourite songs. I am 70 years old, a bass player, still gigging in a great five piece band 80s tribute band, and also playing with some great and seasoned blues players in Dublin, Ireland, it is a sheer delight to have heard this brilliant rendition of that great song.
I've been playing that song for ten years in the Dylan finger-picking style, and I've got it down pretty good. But this. You really can't describe the degree of difficulty in what this young virtuoso is doing here. I've never heard anything like it. And so clean!!
@. Turnock Whats the betting we dont get to hear Tyler W do his version 🤥. Me personally thought it is one of the best and cleanest renditions that I personally have heard.🤟🏻
Tyler W gotta say I agree with Tyler. I’m not very good and play this easily. The melody he does would take a few minutes to get down.. but if it sounds impressive I’m going to start playing it more lol
Well maybe...but I think Mr Strings might need to bring along a guest artist of his own because the last time I saw Mr Dylan in any type of performance he appeared so drugged out he was completely nonfunctional.

@@spaceghost8995 It's when you are using a regular pick, but picking out individual notes on individual strings - as opposes to strumming the pick across multiple (or all) strings. Flat picking is much more difficult because you need to be really accurate where the pick goes, and of course, for economy of motion, you'll be picking some notes with an upward attack, and others with a downward attack.
He's definitely working his way up, but there's some amazing relatively unknown pickers too. There's some nice compilation vids on RUclips, check um out...
McGunther flat picking IS just using a regular pick. You really only hear the term “flat picking” used by old time country musicians because fingerpicking is more popular. Flat picking more or less means using a pick to play what would normally be a finger picking type country style. It’s somewhat of a hipster terminology. It would be a lot more normal to just say “using a pick”
I’ve heard many renditions of this Dylan tune but this one is just off the charts. I’ve played guitar for 44 years and have listened to many great finger pickers… it doesn’t get any cleaner and better sounding than Billy’s.
What do you mean? Most renditions, his included, have a similar picking pattern and are generally pretty quick to pick up on if you are into travis picking.
@@sonbishop5007 Yeah I've known the progression for some years now and when I heard this I literally grabbed the guitar, threw a capo on and started ripping. Lol obviously not as smooth as ole Billy there, but nonetheless I can match the speed and copy a few of his embellishments. I'm sure if I sat down with it I could pick it apart entirely pretty easy. Like you said it depends on how much Travis picking experience you have. Similar patterns everywhere
@@svicious0077 It's a balance. You could also say the artsy "just feel it" types always suck because they hardly study or learn new material. You can bet your ass Billy studied intensely. He's a true student of the instrument and that show anytime you see him talk about it

😎🌵AWESOME BILLY!!😎🌵🤠
I've been playing guitar for 45 years and this is the finest Travis picking I've ever heard, especially on my favorite song of all time.
And singing at the same time is insane.
@@obuddahee8787 Travis picking is where the thumb is alternating picking between two bass notes, and the other fingers pick higher strings on the off beat. As Mark said, this is an exceptional example
@@jasperperry6751 he makes it sound effortless. I saw him live here in Houston earlier this year. one of the best performances I've ever seen.

yeah giving birth to her son went pretty well, but giving birth to the guitar was quite difficult
This guy is living proof that record companies don’t give a damn about true talent. Why is this guy not famous? Amazing.
They have to be told who is good and who is not. If you haven't seen it, the video of the greatest classical violinist in the world, Josh Bell, playing in a Washington D.C. subway proves my point, ruclips.net/video/LZeSZFYCNRw/видео.html .
Another thing about Billy is his approach to his popularity explosion. He's still the same Billy. No fronts no b.s he's an artist and music needed the artist back in it.
He is getting famous he’s starting to headline huge festivals. Sells out ever show with a quickness
its not about how good or not good he is... its about the market...theres not much of market for this type of music unless it becomes a "fade" . Not saying its right but its the truth. With that being said I'M sure he does good for himself by playing, but hes not gonna make as much as much as Katie parry.
@Ksee Yes, “fad” and “Perry”.

Let’s not forget Tommy Emmanuel in that list!
@Adrian T hendrix was honestly trash if ya ask me
Hendrix was not as technically good as the chicken pickers. Although I do enjoy his great heavy electric blues solos

Couldn’t agree more. This young man has absorbed so much tradition and put his own interpretation upon that. He is a rare talent
And he is so humble, from playing with a dedicated father and sitting on a couch with his mates jamming. Just a regular chap with huge potential
Bluegrass music is Scot/Irish/English folk music.
It's funny because I live in southern Pennsylvania and playing all the great British rock music and you live there playing bluegrass. The world is getting smaller.

@THIS EVIL WORLD IS IN YOUR HANDS EVERY DAY GOD SOMEONE HELP! THE EDGES! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!
This kind of stuff can work well with a more direct approach to recording, because the listener can focus on one guy with his guitar instead of being flooded with tons of reverb, Auto-Tune, synth drums & bass, all of the staples of normal popular music.

how come I've never heard of this guy but I've heard lots about entertainers who don't have half this guy's talent.
Probably because being a successful entertainer and being a great musician are two entirely different things

This guy might be the best flat picker in the world. Had no idea he could finger pick like that.
What is flat picking?
This is finger picking with a thumb pick.
I’ve heard many renditions of this Dylan tune but this one is just off the charts. I’ve played guitar for 44 years and have listened to many great finger pickers… it doesn’t get any cleaner and better sounding than Billy’s.
