I live in America and am.Scotch Irish. My Clan Nixon goes back to the Hagan Wall. We were one of the clans under Armstrong. When My clan immigrated, we helped settle the American wilderness. My clan fought in both the Revolution and Civil Wars. I am proud of my Scotch Irish roots. Historians have written if it weren’t for the strong, fighting Scotch Irish, America might still be an English Colony. In fact, the English would give free land outside of their settlements to protect them from Indians. The English were too weak to fight the Indians off. I love this music too. We would play it at family gatherings.

I don’t know why but this is some of my favorite guitar playing. Sometimes I feel like the instruments accompany the words. But here, the guitar is the main story and the words are clarifying details.
God, everything everybody had said and more. Discovered him maybe nine months ago, he is introduced me to players and music I hadn't listened to in a long time and I was dragged over the fence by the ears, by the likes of him and Molly Tuttle and several others. I especially love how focused these kids are and how nowadays these kids at least don't seem to act like it's a fast path to drug use and addiction and death. Too many genius players have died young because they could not handle their success. I hope for all of our sakes these kids live long productive rewarding lives.
His picking is so great it's kinda hard to realize how great he can sing. I'm 61 and add my voice to the chorus he's simply the fastest flat picker I've ever seen ❤
I was barn and raised in Muhlenburg County Ky. Thumb picking was everywhere and everywhere you went there were decent musicians. I was playing by the age of five and although I grew with friends and family that could play and as a kid we would venture over to Ohio County and play and listen to bluegrass. But as I grew up and County Music turned into crud I took a different direction. For yrs now I've listened to and played Led Zeppelin, The Stones,. Guns and Roses, Ozzy, Aerosmith ECT. I still love the classic rock and metal it's in my blood but I have two boys that are excellent musicians. One is hard core and even more hard core than the old man and my other son is bluegrass. He plays mandolin, guitar, and upright bass. A year or so ago he was telling me about this Billy Strings and that if I appreciated great playing it wouldn't matter the genre. Well I figured what the heck I didn't want to be narrow minded so I did look him up and checked him out and within just a little bit I was a huge fan and it brought me back to my roots. It took me back to the first sounds that made me want to be a picker. Unfortunately it reminded me that there are those generational talents and that try as I may have it wasn't me. This kid is from another dimension. I am without fail awestruck each time I watch him play. He's no doubt the best I have ever heard and to boot i dig his style and vocals. Keep it up keep expanding and making other things your very own . Thank you Billy for the enjoyment you've brought to this old Rocker!!!!!!
I just found this youngster a couple of months ago and now it seems he's everywhere. What fun it is to watch him play. He's moved on from his original appearance to a more professional look and it suits him. I'm sure he will go far. I hope he stays away from the commercialized country garbage that's being produced now.

Anyone that gets really good at instrument has put in some work. But natural talent is a real thing. Go to a bluegrass festival. There are eight year olds that will make you want to use your guitar as a coffee table. That's talent.
I assure you this guy has dedicated his life to music completely and this is the result of that kind focus and hard work
Can’t wait to see that guitar 20 years from now…beaten to hell and back…still in this mans hands and still pumping out sweet soul.
This is one of my favorite songs, It has been covered by many people and many, many, famous old school country stars. This could be the best version I have ever heard and that is a giant statement. Billy has a great voice and is a truly amazing guitar player. Thank you for uploading this.
Not sure how it could get any better. Absolutely perfect all around. Geez what a player
Best version for me remains Doc Watson's. But this one's just a step behind.
Yes I know that DOC WATSON IS AS PROUD AS HELL OF BILLY'S DEVOTION TO PLAYING IT RIGHT 🤞👍🎶🎵👏👏
The version on The Circle Album is still the standard. No question.
One of my favorites too.
Paradise is what I think of at my Grandpa’s lil farm beside the Bluewell River, Rock, Mercer County. West Virginia ❤❤❤ I quoted part of these amazing lyrics at Grandpa Ryans’s funeral 😢😭😭😭 so many years ago! My Auntie Rita said everyone was ‘holding it in’ until a talked about what a beautiful place the family homeplace was, then the tears poured!
For this song I’m forever grateful, thank you Master Lyricist Mr. John Prine ❤
I discovered Billy Strings about 7 months ago, and I love him so much, he plays the music I grew up on, we have tickets to see him in August 2024, in 3 months, yippee! He’s amazing 🤩
We going to see him in August too 😄 enjoy the show !
brings tears to my eyes every time from the sheer beauty of it
DANG, I never thought anyone could out do Doc, but here I am singing along with it at the top of my lungs, Knowing that Doc is smiling down from heaven.
This reminds me of home how I miss those Tennessee mountains
I'm in Knoxville...come back, it'll be like you never left....
East Tennessee here, tri cities. nothing like good ole rocky top, what got me is this guy is from up north but I honestly thought he was a local feller.
joshua nicely im in knoxville too!
J.C. here
Missing my home up in blue ridge wv. Florida beaches jsut don't hit like west virginia hills
If yall get the chance you should see him live! All ages, all races, all vibes, all class. Incredibly talented with a great band who put on a great show!
Thats so refreshing to hear country like that these days instead of that garbage they call country. This guy is so dang talented top it off
From an Arkansas hillbilly, thanks Billy strings. You add to " Our" heritage.
Man I wish Billy would record an album doing all these amazing solo covers on RUclips. I want to be able to play like him one day
Billy has single handedly inspired me to start picking again. Much love billy!!!!!
I said the same!
@@tigerstalons5118 I hope to never stop picking, Billy making me want to pick just that much more.
@@squoonz1992 ZEB !!!
His picking makes me want to take up drums.
Jimmy Drifrtwood wouId be proud of Billy Strings. I heard Mr. Driftwood sing this song live in the late 1950's. I barely understood what a unique experience I was having, Loved Doc Watson's version as well. Thanks, Fretboard Journal.
Love me some Jimmie Driftwood songs! Love your pickin’, Billy Strings!
I've listened to this over a million times but it never gets old is that just me
That guitar has such a pure tone, so fitting Billy.
This Martin has my sound for a guitar.
This is a incredible, extremely expert level guitar playing and singing.
Every so often I come back & watch this, I ask my son recently if he thought it'd be inappropriate to play this song at my funeral, Billy Strings singing of course. He said whatever I wanted..lol
I'm 70 yrs old & I LOVE hearing this young man pick & sing.
Grew up in Timbo, AR. Went to school right across the street from Jimmy Driftwood's house, who wrote and first recorded this song. Pretty cool to see Billy Strings playing the crap out of it all these years later.
I really dig it, the story telling in these songs is superb. From Scotland 🏴👍
Listen to Johny Cash version of you want a storied lyrically is painted in your mind
Scotland forever! From Texas
Scotland forever fi... Well SCOTLAND!
@@deborahchapman222 and so you should be proud, I'm Scots Irish myself and we make the hardest most loyal warriors there is. Even our women are warriors.
billy is the chosen one
For sure son
@ He chose to work his ass off. He is not magic. The MFer was smart and worked his ass off.
Fine, maybe a little magic too.
Its obvious he sold his soul ...so yes black magic..
Man his voice is from another era!
Take us home!! We need to keep our souls and our heritage! You the Bomb!! Music will save our sanity and keep us strong!
I don’t know why but this is some of my favorite guitar playing. Sometimes I feel like the instruments accompany the words. But here, the guitar is the main story and the words are clarifying details.
Lord have MERCY. That young man is a beast on that guitar and sing too????
God, everything everybody had said and more. Discovered him maybe nine months ago, he is introduced me to players and music I hadn't listened to in a long time and I was dragged over the fence by the ears, by the likes of him and Molly Tuttle and several others.
I especially love how focused these kids are and how nowadays these kids at least don't seem to act like it's a fast path to drug use and addiction and death. Too many genius players have died young because they could not handle their success. I hope for all of our sakes these kids live long productive rewarding lives.
This video is where I first heard Billy Strings couple years ago... I've prolly watched it close to 1000 times!
God bless Doc Watson for inspiring the gift to the world that is Billy Strings..
Thank you for keeping my generation alive in music
It's good to see someone who does this tune justice ! Doc and Jimmy Driftwood would like it!
God bless this kid, keeping real music alive
I have not ever heard anything like him. he is legit channeling the past and making incredible music!
Look up Charley Crockett.
@@pinkdragonflycmf I will. The amount of music I've heard from you tube comments is amazing
His picking is so great it's kinda hard to realize how great he can sing. I'm 61 and add my voice to the chorus he's simply the fastest flat picker I've ever seen ❤
This dude deserves to be heard I've been listening to him the past few years and as a guitar player he is untouchable
This is still one of my favorite (Grammy winner) Billy Strings tunes.
He is so amazing, I am not a fan of country, never thought I would love a song about a horse so much! Billy, you are doing it for me!♥️♥️♥️
I see you on quite a bit of the music I listen to lol
Good taste. Cheers!
This man has reinvented blue grass! True dude and one of the greatest musicians I have ever listened to. 😎🚬
I've been playing and listening to this song for forty years, but Billy's is my favorite version.
I like Billy’s rendition about as well as any I have ever heard. Jimmy Driftwood would give this a big thumbs up!👍
I just found this youngster a couple of months ago and now it seems he's everywhere. What fun it is to watch him play. He's moved on from his original appearance to a more professional look and it suits him. I'm sure he will go far.
I hope he stays away from the commercialized country garbage that's being produced now.
Hate to shatter your illusions and dispel your prejudice but this was a few years ago. Billy looks like this now, ruclips.net/video/Y6CyQftidOw/видео.html&fbclid=
Not that it makes a damn bit of difference what his hair looks like....jeez
This kids the best that exists today prove me wrong!
I live 2-3 miles from the Jimmy Driftwood farm in Timbo Arkansas. My grandpa built and owned the Jimmy Driftwood Barn in Mountain View. My dad owned it after him. This version of this song is killer. I grew up listening to this song done several different ways.
EXCELLENT rendition of a true classic by Mr Strings. A plus job, Billy, keep up the great work!
the best musicians all seem to be able to do incredible licks without expelling hardly any effort/energy at all. REALLY GOOD FLATPICKING.
and most of them are country/bluegrass players!
All the practice, lessons and want to in the world alone can’t get someone to this level in my opinion. People like this guy and others are all just plain gifted.
Just a beautiful rendition of this song! Best guitar playing on this ever!
Don’t know how I landed here but I have been blessed.
My brother once met and played with Doc Watson many years ago. He used to play this for me, it one of my absolute favorite BG songs! Billy Strings you are awesome! Thanks for playing this one! 🙂
The best version so far ive heard of Tennessee stud. Amazing.
Check out Doc Watson
Chet and jerry yo. This is awesome tho.
I think this may rival Doc Watson's version.
I've heard just about every version of this song and I agree. I *ahem* hate to admit it, but I do prefer this to Doc's version. Both are amazing.
Johnny done it better.
So beautiful I should have long since been in bed I have to work at 6am and it’s 1 now but I just discovered this man and I’m addicted
Watching Billy Strings' fingers fly across and Up & down the fret board is mesmerizing. That he sings the story of the Tennessee Stud and never loses a beat. Amazing rendition.
At 2:03 he sings ‘and he fell with a thud’ and gives the guitar a thud - nice detail
Yep...that made the hairs on my arm stand up... I was like " Hell nawww! Damn it boy! " 😂😂
Truly remarkable
Incredible guitarist. Big fan for sure
Hear the original Doc Watson version, he did it first. I think it is in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" as well
Enrico Osvaldi Yeah Doc Watson also imitates the sound of a horse galloping in his live version that’s on youtube, that version is full of small detaljs like that. But this version is great too.
Simply beautiful rendition of Doc Watsons iconic song..I was fortunate to see Doc & Merle a number of times in small venues & they were incomparable.
Sumbitch, that's some good pickin' and grinnin'! Thanks for the vid.
Can someone tell me why we don’t know about this man yet? This is absolutely insane! I see a come up like Tyler Childers pretty soon in this guy.
I hope not. Childers new album sounds just as overproduced as every other nowadays. I still got love for him though.
@@VansStoner1748 Tyler’s last album was amazing. Sturgill produced it perfect. You just like Tyler unplugged. A lot of cats do
Billy the kid is a masterclass he's up there with the greats 👏🎸
This song brings tears to my eyes.
Simply Outstanding, Thank You Mr Strings 🙏👍
From a gal from Arkansas, this was incredible! Such amazing talent..
"He fell with a thud" {THUD}
Nice touch.
Read this as it happened. Love it
Doc did this in his version as well.
My co worker turned me on to this guy today. Amazing talent. :)
It must’ve hurt his mom giving birth to this kid holding a guitar
Ripped that pu**y in all kind of ways 🫣
😂😂😂
That's pretty hilarious.....quite the vag......2 feet 10 toes...2 hands 10 fingers connected to 6 strings
I'm dead!! 😅
Haha, “the g string tore me open”. “Underwear did that?!” “no, a guitar string!”
Im a 54 year old scotsman and that is one of my favourite songs. Id like to say you done it justice, but no, you done much more than that, you owned it,
