Wrong sir! This not only magical, but wayyyy better than the original even when Ben ( merles boy) and his Uncles collaborate on it! Both of these guys can pick better than anybody in the Haggard family including Merle however nobody can touch Merle's voice! Billy Strings is regarded as one of the best acoustic pickers of all time and he's not even 50 yet! Lol. Marcus King is also way better than all Haggards except Merle! Much more versatile and can hang in any modern or vintage setting!
I love how "old" country is coming back with all of its simplicity, and these two can perform like no one else. There sound harkens back to a earlier time before synthesizing and sampling. Love these two
I am huge Merle Haggard fan but I think Marcus and Billy Strings reinterpretation is even better, kinda like how Chris Stapleton did with Tennessee Whiskey.
Does anyone else get the feeling that 'new' country doesn't have the same feel of 'classic' country? New country is just newly wrapped pop music in my honest opinion. Give me Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson or George Jones or Waylon Jennings or Alabama. Anything from back in that era over anything today. In my opinion, if anyone comes forward as a classic country AUTHENTIC musician he would blow the socks off of the modern era. Authenticity matter most of all.
I have to say, Merle's voice...and range is an easy reach for many men, and I think while one can imitate his "Drops" and some of his tone. It's not fair to assume people are always trying to imitate the Hag. As a Singer since I was younger I can attest to this. Heck the more you listen to great voices, you find your own.
Yes it is such a pleasure to hear country instead of a rock and roll country. Dont get me wrong I love rock music but rock needs to stay rock and country needs to stay country

the world would then be too perfect and would remove some substance from what makes these guys special. Also these guys would never cut even a bar of music that they didn't feel, and so they wouldn't be the poster child of some shit record label like florida/georgia line.
This has to be the best rendition of this song I've ever heard. King gives the lyrics the proper emotional tone that Haggard and others who covered this didn't figure out. It takes the song to a whole different level, not to mention having Strings backing it up. Goosebumps!
Don’t see Marcus smile much when he plays...but I thought I seen a smile when Billy strummed up high on the neck!...what a duet...wish they’d do a album!
The way Billie fades back and quietly keeps pace then Marcus falls off and allows Billie to step up is amazing.... These two have to do more together.... I'm drooling over here🤤😏..... One of my favorite Haggard songs and now It'll never be the same.... Fuckin aye right fellas👍👏
