    While you were talking about the drumming consistency of the massed artillery I was reminded of something I watched. The video was mostly talking about the concussive forces of those artillery barrages and studies towards helmet designs. Now a days we are very much aware of it and modern helmets have protective measures built into them to relieve the concussive force's impact on the head from airburst shells in particular but also closer impacts. For the WWI helmets though they actually found that German helmets were the best overall for countering those forces. The spike on the top broke up the concussive wave and helped it move around the helmet and while the lip around the edge wasn't as good as the brim like lip of British helmets it did further help in directing the concussive waves away from the ears as well.

    The R*pe of Belgium was in a large part due to fear of the Francs-tireurs of the Franco-Prussian war who were soldiers who acted as civilians and then attacked the supply lines as the bulk of the army advanced past them, causing issues for the offensive. The biggest issue about this was that the German military made it a point to teach this to their military so everyone was on edge that at any point what they believed to be civilians could activate and attack.

    As far as I know, Hötzendorf wasn't a bad commander per se, he was just woefully unaware about the poor quality of his own military, making him repeatedly create war plans that his army lacked the capability to carry out. Had Hötzendorf been a German field marshal, he probably would have done well for himself.

    I did some reading about Franz Ferdinand and Sophie and probably the saddest thing is that their kids (they had three) kinda got badly treated by everyone. The Hapsburgs didn’t want them around because they were embarrassing and Franz Joseph had never really liked his nephew in the first place, never mind his useless kids who had zero political value. Then the Austro-Hungarian empire completely disintegrated and the new government didn’t want them around because they were related to the Hapsburgs. They basically got kicked out of their house and weren’t even allowed to bring their own stuff with them. By the time they were adults WWII was brewing and they got persecuted by the Nazis because they wouldn’t support their regime. Their two sons were even imprisoned for a while. So basically they all got shafted by their relationship to a dynasty that had never wanted them to exist in the first place.

    The one thing i would disagree with OS here was their statement that "everyone was especting a new big war" / "a new war could not be avoided" . In my university seminar about ww1 we went over in depth about the whole ordeal and the simple truth that our professor told us was that ww1 was indeed avoidable and that it was an acidental war because no one wanted a war but because of complicated nature of events, it happened. He also told us that there is, as of yet, no agreement on the actual reason why the war actualy broke out. It was quite a fascinating seminar.

    For people who want some quick information about Austrian demand towards Serbia. Serbia didn't just decline the offer about Austrian police, but instead wanted Hague to be the one who investigates, because Austria wanted to have policemen walk around Serbia and interrogate whoever they wanted (pretty much not having freedom). Germany was pleased with this, as they thought that would still make Serbia embarrassed, but Austria really wanted that territory. Along with that, I've read a lot about Austria rushing the making of Albanian country mostly because they didn't want Serbia to have an open sea. At the time, north of Albania were mostly Serbians and south of it were mostly Greeks, so that's why escaping the 3-way invasion through Albania was possible, and why Austrian "friendly invasion" wasn't a thing.

    Frank Ferdinand wanted to make the Dual Monarchy into a Triple Monarchy by giving the Slavs equal status. Franz Ferdinand hated the Hungarians and they returned the favor. Franz Ferdinand was also not popular with the Austrians either. However, he was popular with the Slavs because he championed their cause and Sophie was herself Slavic.
    Franz Ferdinand was especially unpopular with Serbia who dreamed of uniting all the southern Slavs under their leadership. The Serbian intelligence was led by Dragutin Dimitrijević, known as Apis (the Bee), who also was the head of a secret group called the Black Hand whose goal was to unite the southern Slavs under Serbia. Dragutin did indeed have the three assassins trained. He would be executed, along with 6 other leaders of the Black Hand, for his role in bringing about the hardship that befell Serbia (the Serb army and government were chased out of their own country by the Germans and Austrians-Hungarians and were in exile Salonika (a part of Greece)). The man who had him executed was Prime Minister Nicola Pasic, who feared that Dragutin and the Black Hand would cause trouble after the war was over, not to mention let everyone know that Nicola knew about the plans to assassinate Franz Ferdinand before it happened. In what had to be a bit of historical irony,the assassination did indeed bring about the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the creation, for a little while of about 75 years, of Yugoslavia under Serbian leadership.

That, and had reserve trenches just behind the front trench that got bombarded.

    I don't think we can call the British army weak, yes the forces coming from the British isles were far less numerous than the German forces, but they were also quite well trainrd and motivated. Also if Britain brought forth all its manpower from its colonies, they would out umber any army in the world

    • @johanmilde
      @johanmilde 2 года назад +2

      That is an important thing to specify: when the war broke out, the British army was small in numbers, but it was the most experienced army of the great powers, as they had fought near-constantly in various colonial wars around the world. And as you rightly point out, although the standing army was small and professional, the British Empire had access to an absurdly large population that they could mobilise for war. That would take time though, as a lot of the local forces in the colonies were purposefully kept under-equipped and few in number to avoid the risk of revolts and mutinies.

    • @ahriman935
      @ahriman935 2 года назад +1

      "Also if Britain brought forth all its manpower from its colonies"
      Sure, but it would mean leaving all those colonies pretty much undefended, so it couldn't be done even theoretically.
      A completely moot point. Other than that yeah, you're right about the experience.
      I think calling the British army at the time weak is a blatant (and erroneous) throwback to Napolenic era, when their army was indeed largely inferior to continental powers, save for Wellington's own troops.

    10:30 A key issue needs to be pointed out here
    1 ) The Kaiser gave Austria - Hungary the "The Blank Cheque "
    2 ) Russia backed Serbia and mobilized its army
    These two actions transformed what would have remained a local war , into World War I.
    Railway lines allowed the fast mobilization of Armies . When Russia mobilized its Army , Germany considered this a declaration of war . So Germany mobilized its Army and implemented the Schiffen Plan and attacked Neutral Belgium in an attempt to surround Paris .
    Also , ethnic tensions between the Slavic Peoples and the Germanic ( Teutonic ) Peoples contributed to the beginning of WW I .
    .

    I think when people say that Franz Ferdinand was pro Serbian and thus his assasination was a bad move from the Serbian perspective, they are missing a very important point. His sympathies had a very specific goal in mind. First of all it was pro slavic rather than serbian and second it was aimed at reforming the austiran monarchy in a way that binds the slavic population closer into the system. From a serbian national point of view he was probably a bigger threat to their goals than those who actually wanted to keep the slavs as unrepresented as they were at the time.
    Because his sympathies would have never gone so far as to cede any territory to the nation of Serbia ...

    Amazing how aircraft evolved so swiftly, and even how dogfighting techniques developed so much sophistication in such a short period of time.

    The experience of WWI can be seen in the modern art of Europe just after the war. The horrors witnessed by many artists manifests itself in some magnificent art that addresses the wholesale loss of humanity and the questioning of reality itself.

    BLAST FROM THE PAST
    Btw I know comments aren’t the best, but with your election videos lately (especially Ross Perot) I really want to make a suggestion/request. Would you consider doing some videos about more recent history? My daughter and I were talking a while and I found out that she knew almost nothing about the gulf war. I know that may be out of your normal wheelhouse, but you do such a good job of breaking things down that it would be a great way for the younger viewers to learn about things that won’t really get covered in school due to how relatively recent these things were.
    A couple of examples I’d like to throw out are both alternatehistoryhub videos. First, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. My second suggestion as more of a fun vid would be his video on Ross Perot and his “what if he won” video. That one is particularly interesting as Trump was once a big part of the reform party, and it goes into how different his platform was back in those days. It could make for a cool discussion on how political stances can change to suit the base
    Just some thoughts I’ve had over the last few vids
