    Small pike usually rest on the bottom and undisturbed rarely swim around except to attack a minnow. They like to hang by brush and other places to hide from their worst predator (big pike).

    pike shouldnt be kept as pets. the grow rapidly, and have a ferocious appetite. they also need a lot more cover to hide in. in my opinion, this is just wrong.

    • @DrX6xx
      @DrX6xx 7 лет назад +5

      yup 40 tanks from 10g to 300g in the hobby for 15 years fighting these idiot remarks. a pike need a lake not a aquarium. if in an aquarium we are talking minimum 2.5k gallons with a chiller as there cold water fish sadly this fish won't reach it's potential instead it will malforum and die well before its time.

    • @DrX6xx
      @DrX6xx 7 лет назад +4

      Ollie Middlebrook 10 second Google search will tell you why your an idiot. in a natural environment they can move to deeper water that is no were near temps the shallows are at. in a container like this one is kept in the temp will be way over what the fish would want.

    • @olliemiddlebrook8271
      @olliemiddlebrook8271 7 лет назад +1

      DrX6xx most rivers sharks are in in the uk aren't deep in terms of how deep they can go. The fact that it is shallow and a constant supply of fresh water just shows that the tank temp will not change and taps normally have a very cold water supply. Perfect for most freshwater fish

    • @briannaharter4411
      @briannaharter4411 7 лет назад +2

      cold water fish doesn't mean they live in cold water year round.it means the region they come from experiences a cold winter like the us,china,uk,ect. instead of a year round temperature of 72 to 80 degrees.
      how ever I don't agree with stunting a fish just to keep them in a smaller area.cause stunt is more complex then the fish simply not growing and can have some some serious health effects if sever enough.
      but that also doesn't mean there is anything wrong with having one as a pet so long as you got a large tank or better yet a pond to accommodate for their massive size.

    Why all the negetive comments? It's a fucking fish. All of it's needs are being met and he's got it in a non see thru plastic tank so it won't get spooked as bad it would in a glass tank. I don't think they make good pets but it's not because it's cruel, they're a pain in the ass! The guy obviously cares a great deal about his pets and all that pike gives a shit about in life is a meal.

    I like the name. Try not to handle him with your hands. If you must, make sure they are clean and wet your hands before touching him. You remove protective slime on the fish, which can end up with an effection. All the more important in a domestic tank, where a whole host of diseases is more common than in the wild. Lift him with both hands cradling as much of the length as possible. Another thing, it might jump out of the tank, so keep it covered whenever possible. Be careful of other species you might have in the tank with him. Other game fish, such as panfish at a size larger than it can eat make good companions and will not harass your pike. Some species have a tendency to eat the tail off even a larger fish, so be aware of that (especially the piranha you mentioned). Stay away from ANY type of catfish, even if they are smaller than him. You will be surprised to see a catfish able to eat a forage fish almost his size and pike this size in the wild are numerous and often end up in the belly of bass, musky and larger pike. Careful with how you feed him, because as the old saying goes a small Northern's "eyes are larger than his stomach". I've seen several small to very large pike and musky in the wild who tried to swallow too large of a fish (including another pike) and end up dying. Best to go to your local bait shop and purchase small minnows. You can just let a half dozen go in the tank with him and they will swim around, allowing him to feed when he wants to. The other alternative is to get into some type of routine where the pike knows it's feeding time. Lift the cover of the tank and tap the edge a couple of times to get his attention and condition him into knowing that food is coming. Simply throw the (again) small minnows close to him until he turns away from one. You then know he is full. It's best to choose one of the feeding methods; either keeping a steady supply of minnows in the tank so the pike can feed when hungry, or a routine where it knows it is feeding time. Doing both can be confusing. Check the condition of the bait fish to make sure they are healthy, with no obvious growths and/or a "fuzz-like" coating. Test different types of forage to see if there is a preference. A buddy had a pike and it preferred shiners over standard "crappie" or "walleye" minnows. Do not try to feed the pike a fish such as a tiny bluegill or crappie (especially when the pike is small). It's simply a way to error on the side of caution, because panfish have an unusual shape and their dorsal fins are sharp, which can cause choking issues with a small pike trying to eat even the smallest of the species. Also, as mentioned before, pike will try to attack fish their own size. A pike is a difficult species to raise domestically. They will amaze you with just how fast they can move and again, keep a cover on the tank because they will try to jump out. I'm just giving you information based upon the multiple species my friend kept and when they were large enough he transferred them to a larger, round pool, which is much better than a box or cube-type tank. It allows the fish to keep swimming, even though it is just in circles and a trick with the aerator is to have it entering the tank at an angle in a round tank or pool so it causes a current. The larger pool, or tank, had the water ciculated in it from the pond he was going to release them in. When transferring them to the main pond, he used a square, "flat" net (not very deep) with a thick weave to cut down on potentially damaging the fish and then released them into one of his lakes or ponds. If the fish is large, use a type of "cradle" net (it immobilizes the fish and they stay calmer). If you release this fish into a pond or the wild, do so at night because a domesticated fish has a tendency to swim out away from you on the surface where they are easy prey for birds that eat fish - such as a gull or eagle. Pike like verticle "weeds", as well as driftwood anchored to the bottom which allows them to lay next to and/or swim through.

    I did this a while ago and learnt some lessons. It will grow pretty big even in a fish tank. The problem is that those tanks were not designed for fish with the power he has! Quite disconcerting to watch your tank FLEX as he does that slow full body s-shape movement. I would highly recommend fittting a couple of cross straps across the width of the tank, dont have to be permanent, so you can get in to do your gardening and hoovering? DONT feed him live food when kids or Mrs is around, they dont like seeing a pair of ickle eyes peering back from an open mouth!

    Just keep in mind that these can easily grow over one meter especially the females. Here in germany there are various storys about chihuahas and other small dogs eaten by big old pikes while their owners let them go into shallow water. Biggest one i caught so far was about 1.10m but i saw bigger ones getting caught that could have easily swallowed a whole chicken or duck without trouble.

      I would say the chances are pretty slim Pike are extremely fragile fish I would be surprised if it lasted more than a few weeks.

    Adding a pike is like throwing in a pint of domestos .. no visual contribution as he'll hide in the weeds but you simply lose fish. \That's one expensive pet you've just bought!
