  • Holding! The most confusing part for any fledgling Instrument Pilot but thankfully in the 737-800 it’s easy because it does it all for you!
    In this tutorial I will give you some basic information about holding procedures and how we can use the FMC in the PMDG NGX to program and execute a holding pattern. As we approach Stansted (EGSS) from the East we will enter the IAF for ILS 22 at ABBOT and enter the published hold prior to flying the approach. Entering the hold, I will show you all the information available in the FMC!
    THIS TUTORIAL IS NOT TO BE USED FOR REAL WORLD FLIGHT TRAINING.
    Any questions feel free to ask!

    Man, you're my hero on RUclips. I do actually learned some things wrongly watching even experienced simmers doing some mistakes. Your pace is fast, but if someone does know more or less the basics, it's actually easy to follow (just pause and rewind as required). I'm just studying for my PPL, but flying the pmdg as leisure. Keep the good work! If ever you setup some sort patreon or donation, I would contribute!

      Hi Ram,
      PMDG, for what is essentially an entertainment product, is a study level standard product and incredibly realistic. It of course has "simisms" but so do the real world procedural trainers. You really need a Level D sim (and a few million in the bank to buy one) to match the real aircraft!

    Great tutorial, as always. I have been trying to learn the holding technique in the PMDG737NGXu and replicate the Abbot hold into EGSS. I note that you joined the hold at Abbot at FL060 which is the planned approach altitude for that waypoint. However the chart now shows an MHA of FL080 for the Abbot hold and is a constraint in the FMC that I cant of course change. If I enter the hold at this higher altitude I am really struggling to lose the height to intercept the glideslope at the FAF when I come out of the hold. What am I doing wrong and any tips please? Thanks.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! I do have a question, I am flying with the Zibo mod and I am practicing holding patterns while descending following a STAR. My question is when exiting the hold, I press exit hold and then Zibo maintains the speed that it had during the holding, which makes the remaining of the descend pretty slow. How do I proceed to accelerate again if I want to keep VNAV on? Or do I need to press spd intv and control the speed myself for the remaining of the descend? Thank you for your help and I hope the question is not too confusing!

    At 05:40 when the turn for the outbound leg started, I see that the plane used a 30 degree bank angle and kept it for the rest of the turn. Would that normally happen in reality as well? Or is it a PMDG thing? ICAO suggests that the bank angle is 25 degrees and you've entered the holding 10 knots slower than the max IAS of 230 for that altitude. So it's quite surprising to use 30 degrees *and* overshoot the plotted racetrack as you've noted. 🙂

    Great video!! Also I have a question: If you are given a descent clearance in a holding, do you use VNAV or what mode do you use?

    • @No-yw9dl
      @No-yw9dl 4 года назад

      depends the aircraft a full FMC/FMGC will calculate it for you so you might stay VNAV. In my time before these full systems it was a vertical speed setting, normally about -1000ft per min. Our company policy was to also do a quick mental calc to check. FD2S can confirm or otherwise.

  • @filthywings353

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад +1

      Hi K.S. Flightsim.
      It's not terribly common but it really depends what the weather is like, where you're going and and what time you go! In Europe, even at major international airports you can at certain times get straight in or perhaps they space out you out with delaying vectors. They'll start holding when they can't get everyone in sequentially or there are too many aircraft for the radar controller to manage.

    Hello,
    If ATC for instance gives you an expected time in the hold/delay, e.g. 5 minutes. Should you adjust the holding legs time so that you will complete one lap after 5 minutes (or whatever time is given), even though a default holding is usually 4 min, and each leg 1 min?
    Or if a time less than 4 minutes is given by ATC, should you fly shorter legs to make one lap in the time given?
    Or should the holding always be flown exactly as published, and if a potential delay time is given, it's only for information?
    Thanks

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi LevelMind.
      When holding you’re usually given an expected approach time. You don’t alter the published holding procedure.
      Holding can be cancelled at anytime and you’re usually radar vectored or told after passing the beacon to route direct to a certain WPT.

      We would liaise with ATC after being cleared a visual approach. We would simply ask what would they would like us to do in the event of a missed approach, typically straight ahead to the MSA but it could be identical to the MISAP of an existing approach to the runway!

      Hi Kieran!
      Two ways, if on vectors we would just simply use HDG SEL and update the FMC routing on the legs page.
      Secondly you can use the "EXIT HOLD" function to exit via the waypoint you're holding at in the FMC, it will then route to the next en-route WPT.

      flightdeck2sim Ah cool :) so would you be put in a hold with other planes and for a while and have to descend to a lower altitude while staying in the holding pattern until eventually being told to exit the hold? Would it be a case of leaving the hold on the FMC and using vertical speed and altitude hold to punch in descents ?

      Sort of! You are only "stacked" at really busy airports, you can be cleared for the Approach at any point. If you descend in the hold you would generally use V/S to descend as efficiently as possible, the aircraft would automatically transition to ALT HLD reaching the MCP cleared altitude.

      I don't know how you got on a holding tutorial with a parking break question : I think the problem you are having is because you did not remove the chocks via the FMC. The reason and the solution is all explained in details in the introduction document from PMDG.

      Hi FRD,
      Just FSX Steam on my mediocre Laptop, nothing fancy! I will perhaps invest in a new PC. (I really don't know much about add-ons and things like that!)

    Is it possible with the NGX to simulate actual stacking, so you say enter Abott at 9000 then hold but get the aircraft to lower to 6000 while performing the hold pattern?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Paul,
      In the real aircraft you would just simply descend to a lower altitude when cleared by ATC, there is no stacking function per se!

      Many thanks for that, I use a couple of pay ware atc programs and they only ever seem to have me hold at the lowest altitude rather than dropping down through the hold

      Hi Alrxandre!
      VNAV isn’t a suitable mode whilst holding as it cannot really calculate an accurate path. If you’re descending it’s best to use V/S and set something like 1000fpm. Once you’ve been cleared to exit the hold update the FMC and then you can revert to VNAV 👍🏼

    Fantastic tutorial. Thanks! A question: have you been asked to perform a holding ascent or descent?

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Thanks Wotao.
      Yes it's very common to descend in a hold as you can be stacked on approach, very unusual to climb though!

      I climbed in hold few times because climb performance was insufficient to overfly mountains nearby. Should't be problem with an airliner though.
