  • This is what it all comes down to. Years of hard work and money invested (it certainly was in my case) and you're sitting on the threshold of the runway in a $65,000,000 Jet and you're in control. You set the thrust to 40%, let the engines stabilise and you push TO/GA and the CFM56's on the NG whine into life and off you go, your dream has come true.
    In this tutorial (by far of one of the most requested!) I've replicated the exact profile used for cadets on their first ever flight, Base Training!
    Join me at East Midlands Airport (EGNX/EMA) shortly before sunset as we take off into the visual circuit, conduct a touch and go followed by a full stop landing (In reality each cadet would complete a minimum of 6 landing each!)
    The Base Training in this video is identical to the same profile taught during PSCT (Preliminary Simulator Circuit Training) which is exactly how it's flown in real life.
    You will also find detailed guidance on how to setup the aircraft and prepare for such a sortee. Despite the confines a desktop simulator has you can quite accurately replicate the real profile!
    This Tutorial Includes....
    - Base Training Pre-Flight Briefing
    - Aircraft/FMC Setup for Base Training
    - x2 Visual Circuits with One Touch and Go and One Full Stop Landing
    As ever if you have any questions feel free to ask!
    ===========================================================================
    All guidance in my tutorials are based on real world operating procedures, I have almost 4000 hours on the 737-800 (The real one) and I'm also a full-time Instructor working in a full motion Level D simulator.
    The aim of this channel is to provide realistic, informative and useful information to help you enhance your flight simulation experience by following me apply real world procedures

    You made a very important point for all simmers- "Usually there are multiple people to do all of this".

      That's where I've found FS2Crew invaluable once you have it set up as it greatly decreased my workload. Even on circuits, the virtual co-pilot handles the flaps and gear for touch and goes.

    I hope you realize that your videos are extremely valuable to all of us want-to-be pilots. It's very rare to see someone make high quality videos on the PMDG 737 NGX that has actually flown the plane, thank you!

    Just want to leave something here for the fellow sim pilots. (by the way: brilliant videos! keep it going!!!!)... I am not sure if you covered it in another video but you often talk about turn rates and they it is crucial timing-wise to have the correct one be it in holding-patterns or in this maneuver... (Don't wanna bug you. I know you know it for sure ;-) Just helping desktop guys ;-)
    In small planes you normally have a turn coordinator telling you "how to do" level 1 turns. You obviously don't have one in the 737. There is a rule of thumb thou. Just get your TAS divided by 10 and add 7. That's roughly the bank angle needed. (Referred to this very nice training video: TAS is around 166kts on climb-out. 166/10 + 7 = 23,6... So lets say 24°. Capt. F2S did 25 and that's just fine :-) )

    Superb as usual and thanks for your efforts. Thinking of investing a couple of hours in the simulator myself. Cardiff has 747-400 full motion but no 737 (I think). I also have the 747 on my sim so that would not be too much of a problem but I should find a 737-800 full motion simulator I guess. Anyway, thanks again for the tutorial, very much appreciated.

      Hi ghl, Thanks a lot!
      You'll find using any 737 Home Simulator or Professional setup very rewarding to use! During the Type Rating cadets use a Fixed base Sim initially, it's only the last part they use a full motion simulator.

      flightdeck2sim to my surprise it actually worked! I had a great time and some nice landings. Though I had some problems keeping the standard rate turn constant the whole turn so I was overshooting on final just like you did, otherwise it was great!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      It should work, it's the exact way it's done! It can be tricky judging the turn onto final, even in a Full Motion Level D but it's a lot easier in real life when you can physically see the runway!
      Glad you enjoyed it!

    Brilliant as usual. Timing the downwind is very tricky. Why not create 4 custom waypoints to represent the circuit so you have it on the ND. Can you please do a radar vectored SID. I want to see how you work with the FMC when ATC puts you back on the SID as "climb via except"

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад +1

      Hi MMadenU, thanks!
      You could do but after the touch and go PM (In this case the Line Training Captain) would have to input all the data in the FMC again instead of watching the cadet flying the aircraft for the first time! It's a visual circuit and we want the guys to look outside as much as possible!
      Been trying out VATSIM and planning a full flight tutorial at some point which will hopefully give a good insight as to what goes on during a typical flight from A to B!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Yeah it can be hard making these tutorials as realistic and as true to real life as possible. The 737 is a multi-crew aircraft which requires two fully qualified pilots to operate safely.
      When flying maneuvers like this visual circuit using a desktop simulator and a joystick whilst explaining what is going on and doing the jobs of two pilots it can be quite tricky! The videos is only published if it's true and accurate, can take a few takes!

    Yet another fine instructional video FD2S!! Please don't give them up :-) Can I ask if you use any particular software to generate your flight-plans to input them directly into the FMC, or do you usually type everything in using the scratchpad and a predefined route sourced from somewhere else? Like your dispatcher for instance. I use PFPX which is usually okay but it does sometimes throw a wobbler and I can get some weird routing. Also, in real operations, are you given departure runways and SID's by your dispatcher or is it from ground just before you push back?
    Oh BTW; you ought to invest in a Track IR!
    Regards
    Nigel

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Nigel, don't worry I wont and thank you!
      I've been using real world OFP's but you will be pleased to know simbrief (www.simbrief.com/) use the identical format and is generated in the exact same way as the real world OFP's
      Everything is manually typed in each sector (a real bane!) and the OFP contains the expected SID/STAR which can always change at short notice.
      Will look into track IR!

    Hello,
    i enjoi all your videos to learn about the Systems.
    Now, last time i tried about the HYD Systems. The question is if i turn off all HYD/ELEC Pumps in the Overhead, must the Ailerons/Elevator/Rudder/Spoiler work or not?
    I know we have a STBY HAYD System, and when i turn off the STBY RUD Switch in the Overhead on the left Side, the it is no longer working.
    But how long is the STBY HYD System working?
    So, the HYD System is one of the systems, which is hard to fully understand. Maybe that could be a good content for a Video ?

    1.Why when ALT ACQ mode was on the plane continued climbing ? Do you should press CMD to level off there or usinng CMD is not part of the procedure?

    Excellent, thanks for sharing! Is there a rule of thumb for being always on the proper glidepath (two reds/whites) when turning final on a visual circuit? Or just the timing will do it?

    • @flightdeck2sim

      The timing I used in this tutorial works reasonably well in ensuring you’re on your vertical profile by the time you turn base and final.

    Great video, thank you so much! One question: in my sim, after the first landing, it seems to reset everything in my FMC and, more importantly, I lose the indicators on the PFD speed tape that shows the flap speeds. On yours it looks like the '5' and '15' speed indicators stay on your speed tape throughout the touch-and-go. After my touch-and-go I lose all info on the ND as well as the speeds on the PFD. Is there an aircraft option I need to set in the PMDG setup or is there some other trick to getting the info to stick after the touch-and-go?

      I did notice this when I was practicing and when I made my circle to land tutorial. Touching down in the PMDG deletes all the approach and flap placard speeds, in reality this happens at a lower speed. I don't know exactly what I did to prevent it from happening, I think selecting a valid VREF downwind and selecting a valid approach in the FMC prevented it from erasing everything after touchdown.

      I had this issue as well...and apparently it has something to do with the setup you choose on the DEP/ARR page in your CDU. If you choose the first (top) ARRival option, all your vspeeds and flap speeds disappear after you first touchdown. If you choose the second (bottom right) ARRival option your REFspeed and flapspeeds will remain visible.

    Hello F2DS,
    First, i whish you an happy new year and a lot of pleasure during yours flights.
    I follow your advices concerning the training on visual circuits, I do many and many circuit patterns.
    I would like to ask you 3 questions:
    1) How do you know your spped reference for the 2nd touch and go.
    I always have my speed for the 1rst pattern but I don't have any reference for the 2nd and the followers...
    2) Why do you continue to change your speed on the MCP when auto thruttle is OFF ?
    3) My aircraft does not level of at 2000' ...
    Excuse me if there are some gramatical mistakes. I'm french.
    Thanks a lot

      Hi Phih H, thank you
      1. - Update your new VREF Downwind
      2 - You have to manually match the speed on the MCP
      3 - You have to Level off manually!!

    Nice one my friend. So what about an engine out? As you are at v2 and you are unsure about the runway remaining, i guess you have only the choice to go, is it right? So after an engine failure you pick up the rhrust on the engines even if the flaps and the stab trim are not yet in position or you do it as normal? Thanks

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi badname!
      A Tricky situation which would require timely actions by the PF. If still in the flare or shortly after touchdown there should be sufficient runway remaining for a full stop but if you had floated or were unsure of the runway distance remaining a missed approach into a single engine go around would be the safest option.

    Greetings from the frozen US. I've been having a lot of fun today completing 6 touch and go's at EGNX. Suffice to say it is quite a handful. My question is a bit outside the scope of this video and relates to the MCP. I think my grasp of the MCP is better when I am flying LNAV and VNAV as opposed to when I am unconnected from the FMC. Right after takeoff in this video you observe that you do not have anything in the pitch mode of the FMA and then select HDG SEL. I'm wondering why since you do not have the autopilot engaged? Maybe this is simply "best practices", such as keeping the heading bug aligned when in LNAV? On a related note to the MCP, something I learned by accident while on the ground in a line up and wait configuration and the logic escapes me....why when pressing ALT HLD without AP/CMD engaged does the thrust advance? I realize it is trying to capture the speed I have entered in the IAS box it just surprises me that ALT HLD while on the ground would put everything in motion. I couldn't figure out what to do so I turned of the F/D's and AT. Sorry for the long note, reply if so inclined, otherwise thanks for the videos and I'll keep watching and learning.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi BobKidSTL.
      In the real aircraft HDG SEL automatically engages when you push TO/GA for take off. For some reason it didn't and after departure at 400ft we either confirm or select a roll mode.
      ALT HLD engages MCP SPD so if the A/T is engaged it will accelerate to the speed set on the MCP.

    Another amazing tutorial, thanks. You said on your final circuit that speed=thrust on a 737, unlike on light aircraft. I fly light aircraft and use thrust for rate of descent and trim for speed. Why is this different on a 737?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Michael, you're right! On a light aircraft on final approach Power = Pitch/ROD, Attitude = Speed.
      The exact opposite applies on a large jet commercial aircraft like a 737
      Thrust = Speed - Attitude = Pitch on final approach.
      This is primarily due to the fact the 737 has under slung engines. Any change in thrust setting will result in a change of attitude as the thrust vector is below the C of G. They're also incredibly powerful!
      When we get cadets starting their type rating they initially apply what they know and change their thrust to alter their attitude which is not desired. All they end up doing is massively accelerating/decelerating.
      Hope this helped answer your query!
      FD2S

    • @MichaelFairburn
      @MichaelFairburn 6 лет назад

      Thanks, that explains why adding thrust in the sim doesn't alter the RoD. So would I be correct in thinking that you use elevator trim to set your attitude, and therefore your RoD?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Not quite! We use pitch via the control column. Once we have the attitude set we use the Trim to relieve any control forces. The whole idea is you can let go of the control column and the aircraft maintains its attitude.

      Hi 23 Savage, it sure is!
      The 737 is notorious for being loud in the flight deck due to the surrounding airflow. Boeing attempts to reduce this noise by putting some small vortex generators just in front of the windscreen but it makes sod all difference! Most of us wear noise cancelling headsets!

I know for a soft field landing you try to keep weight off the nose wheel to avoid it digging into a rut or gopher hole before the aircraft has slowed down. Holding off while adding speed as in a touch and go sounds like an effective way to induce a tail strike.

    Great video, but I am having tremendous difficulty reproducing one aspect of it. Everything is the same up through "gear-up," but my Pitch mode never switches from TO/GA to ALT ACQ. I can't seem to do anything to get this to happen. I have tried changing weights, acceleration and reduction heights, and even flying it at the same airport with the same V speeds and conditions. Everything on the panel looks the same as yours, except I never get ALT ACQ and MCP SPD to happen. I don't see any indication you are turning on the A/P, but you do zoom in just after pressing HDG SEL, so I can't see what you did on the MCP to the right of that. Anyway, just frustrated because I can't get this to work. Thanks for any help!!!

      I had 2000 feet both in the MCP and in the CDU as cruise altitude, as well as both FDs on. I can only get ALT ACQ when I engage the Autopilot at 1000 feet (with CMD showing on PFD) where your PFD seemed to show FD when ALT ACQ came on.

      One more item - when I entered 2000 in cruise on PERF INIT page, CDU says "UNABLE CRZ ALT"

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi cruisebuddy,
      I’m really not sure what’s happening then. FD is just the AFDS (Autoflight Director System) showing that the F/D is commanding the requested modes and should still transition to ALT ACQ approaching the altitude set on the MCP. In this tutorial all I’m doing is flying it manually following the F/D’s. Unable CRZ ALT is just the FMC staying the obvious, it should not affect the F/D’s.
      If you coule message a screenshot or videos to my FB page, facebook.com/flightdeck2sim I’ll try my bet to resolve your issue. It could be the way PMDG programmed the FMC that it interferes with the F/D commands and automation or Ive missed something obvious!

      Hi Capt. DS
      I had a quick look, this is caused by the default FSX ATC which is not realistic and gets you to descend early, it's good to use to practice though.

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Hi Michael
      Minimum turn altitude for departure is 400ft (PANS OPS)
      What is Rule 5!?

      flightdeck2sim If I remember my air law exams I believe the OP is referring to the ole' aircraft shall not be flown closer than 500ft to any person, vessel, vehicle or structure" rule. I may be wrong 😂

    Is 737 heavy to control or agile??😄

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Sar,
      I wouldn't call a 737 agile but with Hydraulically assisted controls it's not heavy to control! Losing Hydraulics (Manual Reversion) is a different story!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 лет назад

      Absolutely, this is quite normal with Flap 5-10, May I not recommend you fly at 160kts with flaps up!

      Vondalo well the A/P in both the PMDG and ZIBO MOD match the MCP perfectly.
      If you check out my Instagram I have many posts explaining many features of these two addon aircraft in comparison to the real aircraft.

      flightdeck2sim You should jump into VR on the Oculus with flyinside. You have the hardware for it and VR is made for flight simming, the pmdg 737 works flawlessly together with the weather add-ons.

      EinkOLED I went to the UK Flight Sim Convention last month and I was amazed at what you can do now!
      Would it benefit my Sim experience on just a personal level or would it benefit people like you are here to learn?
      I pretty much only have the time to use Flight Sim to make my tutorials!

    Is 2000 supposed to be AAL or AMSL?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад

      Hi Joshua, this was based on QNH so AMSL. Pretty much all commercial operations are based on QNH.
      (AAL based on QFE) is rarely used.
