    I found out about anti-ice in X Plane the hard way. I noticed while coming in on approach that just before the turn to the final leg, maybe around 5000 my engines suddenly started to surge. I looked down and noticed the trim wheel trimming all the way up before the plane started to drop like a stone.
    Naturally I'd completely forgotten to throw on the anti-ice on the way down and had my wings ice up.

      That doesn't sound too realistic unless you flew through freezing rain!

      I think it was freezing rain. It was a stormy approach into Munich with rain (maybe snow? Hard to tell in game) and the temp hovering around 10F or so if I remember right.

    When you turned off the F/D on the captain's side the Master Flight Director Indicator switched to the First officer's side. I guess you need to recyle both the F/Ds if I am not mistaken?

    Unless I missed something, you mention the importance of having the correct QNH set , but you have 1026 set in the forecast page and 1024 set on the PFD.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад +1

      Hi GoPro Flying, yes setting the correct QNH is vital!
      Remember the pre-set QNH used on the DES FCST Page has no impact on the Altimeter, it just helps VNAV build a more accurate idle decent path. We usually stick in the METAR QNH there. So long as the correct QNH is set correctly on the PFD (when you’ve been cleared to an altitude you’re advised by ATC of the latest QNH) you’re all good 👍🏼

  • @cloopz
    @cloopz 5 лет назад

    Pretty sure to recycle the FD for the G/A both FDs have to be reset together. I could be wrong but that's our SOPs at 300' below our final waypoint. ;)

    • @elyesdjazz
      @elyesdjazz 5 лет назад

      Hi , can you please explain to me, why we do recycle FDs. For guidance in case of go-around at the missed approach altitude but, what if we don't recycle them !? we should get the guidance, no ?! thank you

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  5 лет назад +1

      Hmmm, can't always be before the final waypoint, what happens if it is above the MAA? Our SOP is to set MAA at 1000ft AAL or 300ft below MAA if minima is above 1000ft!
      We use to always recycle F/D's on a NPA when disconnecting, we can now leave it on if the FAT is within 1 degree of the FMC track but F/D guidance below the MDA isn’t always 100% accurate as you get close to the ground compared to an ILS, especially if it’s offset like on this approach. You don’t want to be following F/D’s if they’re not providing the correct information!!

    I'm learning so much. Thanks. Please keep the vids coming. Can you remind me at what distance you set the fixes again. 10 miles, then 7 and 3? Is that correct? And do these all correspond with flap settings?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +4

      You're welcome!
      We use the fix rings to increase our situation awareness and we have company specific SOP's regarding its use.
      They're based on the LDG RWY e.g. In the tutorial RW16.
      X1 x3 Altitude Ring. We multiply our CRZ by x3. E.g. If cruising at FL370 we'd have a 111nn ring, this roughly will correspond with TOD
      X1 10nm ring. The latest point at which we can select Flap 1
      X1 4 or 5nm ring. The point st which we select Gear Down, Flap15.
      The Captain has the discretion to alter the configuration point any time he likes but Day to Day this works really well.
      Good luck!

    Superb video content across the site with more to learn on each repeated viewing. Congratulation and thanks for your effort. Minor question please - what hardware & software are you using to look around the cockpit in the sim.? I'd guess at multiple fixed camera views, but the zoom and rapid interchange is quite something. Not head tracking as the views are too steady, ...

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад

      Thanks Phillip!
      To look around the flightdeck I use a handy utility called EZDOK, it's payware but a fantastic investment (I'm no way affiliated, just being honest!)
      You can assign different key command to look around the Virtual Cockpit and hold down the mouse wheel to pan around, no hardware at all!

It certainly is not PMDG quality yet, but zibo, along with our long chain of beta testers and suggestions (aka the x-plane.org community) literally works day-by-day, releasing constant updates, improvements, and enhancements... all in the name of the 737. I encourage everyone to donate to him! (and audiobirdxp for the outstanding sounds).

    Hello, first I wanted to say thank you for creating such an awesome channel, nothing on youtube related to flightsimming comes even close in terms of quality to your vids! I have a question regarding LOC approaches - I've read on pprune that the preffered AP modes for these approaches are VORLOC/VNAV. Are there any more differences in conducting VOR and LOC approaches (beside the fact that localizer provides precise lateral guidance for the rwy)? Do we need to recycle FDs as well?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Mufec, thanks a lot!
      Yes LOC approach will be VOR/LOC and VNAV PTH, so long as the vertical profile is correctly coded in the FMC. You can use V/S and fly the vertical profile that way.
      If the final approach track and a RW point is coded in the FMC there is no need to recycle F/D's but if flying in V/S or get poor guidance from the F/D's after disconnecting recycle them.

    Hello again. Really learning a lot from your tutorials and improving my understanding of the B738 and putting it all in practice with my VA operator.
    I've got a question about the final approach technique. On a couple of your approach tutorials you take out the autopilot and auto throttle and then notice you've got 3 reds on the PAPI and talk about making an immediate correction. At this stage in the approach do you make that vertical speed correction with pitch, power or both? And if it's pitch, is that yoke inputs or trim? (I have elevator trim rocker under my thumb on the yoke).

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks John! Glad they can help!
      The aim is to maintain 2 whites 2 reds all the way to the threshold if possible.
      Unlike a light aircraft we do the following....
      - Vertical Speed correction if high or low we use just Pitch which controls Attitude. Once the attitude is set you can trim
      - We use just thrust to control speed.
      In a light aircraft like a Cessna/Piper power controls ROD and attitude controls the speed, well that's the way I was taught! On an aircraft like a 737 with underslung engine thrust has a huge influence on attitude. When you increase thrust the nose wants to go up and vice versa.
      The correction to be made with three reds is to pitch up and increase your attitude slightly, this will make your speed decrease so add a little more thrust then re-trim.
      Hope this helped!

Whichever approach you choose, the plane will always guide you exactly towards the runway by itself, so can anyone actually explain to me where the difference is?

    • @Aviator738

      It follows the approach paths which are loaded into database. (It loads the same path in the approach chart) but you have to check the VOR page on ND everytime to make sure it is going on the correct path. Because in simulation, runway in the ND and actual runway position can be incorrect so you can find yourself far away from actual runway.

    • @flightdeck2sim

      It should be the ILS frequency you tune for a localiser approach! Just use VOR/LOC instead of APP. For pitch you need to use VNAV or V/S!

      Hi Judith
      Yes we set the MAA at the top of the white bar (1000ft AAL) UNLESS
      If your MDA happens to be around or above 1000ft AAL ensure you set the MAA above this altitude, this point would be discussed by the crew and is dependent on the approach being flown.
      I found the NGX can sometimes transition to ALT ACQ but once the FMC is in Approach Logic VNAV should command a descent so long as the MCP ALT is set 300 ft above the aircrafts present altitude.

    Hello FD2S! On the EFIS panel, which minimums setting should be used? Radio or Baro and what is the difference between the two? I’ve read too many conflicting responses regarding this setting. After the 9th conflicting read, I said I’m going to go ask a real 737 800 master. Cheers!

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 лет назад +1

      Aha! Thanks Massimo
      For a CAT I ILS or Non Precision Approach use BARO MINS. The minima on these approach are based off altitude (MDA or DA)
      For CAT II/III where you’re planning an Autoland use RADIO MINS. The minima for these approaches are based on height (DH)
      Good Luck!

    Hello, first of all I want to thank you for a great video. I would like to ask if anyone can help me how to center specific waypoint in RTE legs page in FMC. I cant seem to find a way how to do it
    Thank you

      Hi Vladimir, thanks a lot!
      Enter the WPT on the right of the RTE page or insert the WPT on the LEGS page (easier that way)

    Regarding non precision approach, it appears that its VNAV flown approach in the absence of localizer and g/s? Is it correct? Secondly, whats visiblity limit for this approach?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Kk,
      Only in the absence of a G/S we'd use VNAV to manage our descent profile for a Non Precision Approach.
      To answer your 2nd question I've checked the chart in the link for the approach used, this was before I learnt how to incorporate charts into videos! I can't actually find the RVR anywhere! It's 1000m after checking the latest updated chart.
      Kind Regards,

    Hello. Sorry, i don`t speak english. Is there MAA altitude in fix on the FMC, or in this case MAA=MDA?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Boba.
      All we do is set the MDA using the BARO MINS.
      MAA = Missed Approach Altitude and is completely unrelated to Minimums/MDA
      Decision is either a DA or MDA.
      We use fix rings just as a configuration reminder.
      Good luck!

    Nice video I subscribed. It's good to learn from someone who flies it in real life. Is the pmdg 737 similar to the real 737? Can you land one in real life when you understand everything on the pmdg or would that be too hard? Cheers

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  8 лет назад +6

      Good question! Just from experience and having held a full CPL and IR before starting my Type Rating 6 years ago and having a reasonable knowledge of the 737 it's a completely different experience manipulating the controls and flying the aircraft. There is a significant difference to say a home built simulator and a full motion Level D Simulator and then another jump to the aircraft itself.
      You could certainly jump in and have a rough idea what does what but 99% of people who would get into the seat wouldn't know how to move it into the correct position! We also have people who go through their type rating, completing all their ground school but can still struggle at point during the course.
      You do really need the background knowledge of an ATPL course, Frozen ATPL and Full Type Rating to have the basic understanding. It's not until you have +500 hours on the aircraft itself most people begin to get comfortable!

    If You fly some rnav star with a 15nm final do You tend to keep 180 on that base ? It seems weird to me but i also read about 180kt base rule so i am not sure

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Piotr.
      180 kts is the recommended ICAO speed for base leg and would work if you were flying to a 10nm final from base. Generally we would still be decelerating at 15nm to the "UP" Speed unless complying with a speed restriction.
      We encourage crew to be no faster that 200kt at 10nm with Flap 1 selected.
      Hope this helped to answer your question!

    Great tutorial with lots of good tips and information!
    I have one question. When switching on the APU at the destination gate I noticed how you used the left aft pump but I've learned the best option is to use the fwd one since that one is easier (less expensive) to replace. This considering the wear will be higher on the pump that is used to feed the APU at the gate and thus will be replaced more frequently vs the other pumps.
    Maybe this is different between different operators?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Richard, thanks for the feedback!
      I honestly didn't know the difference in price with regards to the fuel pumps! As far as our SOP's are concerned if the APU is operating we should position any AC powered fuel pump to on. This is to extend the service life of the APU fuel control unit. Other operators might have a different procedure!
      Seeing the AC Tank pumps are on all the time during the course of the day it shouldn't worry too much about which one you use. It's only when you complete the full shut down checklist after the final flight we turn off all the fuel pumps off (leaving one pump on until the APU is shutdown). during a transit turnaround we leave them all on.
      The fuel source for the APU is normally from the No 1 main tank and it's recommended that at least one pump in the supplying tank is always on to provide positive fuel pressure although it's certainly not required!
      Take care!

      I heard this a couple of times but like you say I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make and apparently it's different between different operators.
      Take care and safe flying!

    • @piotrkuler2474
      @piotrkuler2474 7 лет назад

      Richard Åsberg some operators turn off fuel pumps for turnarounds ( default boeing procedures) so then it possibly makes some diffrence.
