Many thanks for that. It was a welcome response from a request on one of your earlier tutorials. From your guidance I was recently able to successfully perform a 2 minute hold at FL (Can't recall now).....following a request on Vatsim and before reaching a waypoint, by using the PPOS procedure. I suppose because I was at a reasonably high altitude I noticed that during the hold the air speed remained well above flap speed compared to other examples at lower altitudes where it seems to skate close to the limit. I have a VERY long list of requested videos and all the stuff I'd like to eventually so, enough to keep me busy for some months to come! We very rarely use PPOS, we'd usually get vectored or sent to a published hold. The only time I've used PPOS was flying into an airport where all the published holds were covered is CB's/Thunderstorms so we requested to hold present position. Generally your hold speed isn't a factor, so long as you stay in the protected area. Good luck! FD2S.

These tutorials are absolutely amazing, thanks for your time and effort in imparting your real world experience. Can I request a tutorial on ETOPS procedures and planning & Cost Index? Keep these coming 👍🏻
Hi Terence, thanks a lot! Our fleet are not ETOPS approved so I dare say you're know more about ETOPS than I do! I'm planning on creating a tutorial covering a real world OFP in detail and what we do in the planning stage, it's covered a little in my latest full flight tutorial EMA-DUB Part 1/3 FD2S
flightdeck2sim yes indeed! Now to look into getting this pmdg masterpiece. Certainly more of a handful then I’m used to either in the sim or definitely in real world.
Hi Andrei. On the Climb out above FL100 (with no turbulence or forecast turbulence) On Descent 15 minutes before landing (Typically passing FL150) All the best! FD2S.
If you get a chance, I would love a tutorial on how to calculate how much fuel should we load, I keep getting the message on my FMC that I am using reserve fuel, but I land always with about 3 tons left in the tanks. I do not use PMDG, I use Prosim737 with their flight model, so the issue may be there...
Hi 737ngxsim. I'm planning on stepping through the fuel taken on a typical sector and what it's all for (TRIP/ALTERNATE/CONTINGENCY/ALTERNATE etc). You can typically land with around 3000kg if your alternate isn't very far from your destination. FD2S.
Love your videos! I've learned so much about the technical aspects of flying the 737 NG. Do you have a video on missed approaches and how they are handled? Does the PMDG allow for setting the V speeds for such an occurrence? How are they found in the FMC? I'd say 99% of us are single pilots in the cockpit so our time is limited in what we can do. But, I'd rather know how to set up the missed approach and do what I can do as a single pilot. Thanks...
Thanks Dan! Hope you found the missed approach tutorial interesting! V speeds only associated with take off, the aircraft systems manage the go-around and acceleration when you retract flaps during the Go Around. FD2S
Another great video! On most , if not all your videos, you mention maintaining continuous descent and you go to great lengths to avoid levelling off. Can you tell me what the benefits are of doing this? Learning so much for which I thank you!
Rob Padgham As soon as you level off you increase fuel consumption (because the engines have to go above idle). So I think the aim is to fly as efficiently as possible (saving money).
Hi Rob, Adam is right! Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) are flown primarily to reduce the environmental impact of the aircraft (noise and fuel burn). To expand on this below FL100 we always try to avoid any level segment so we adjust the vertical speed accordingly, primarily by using V/S. Additionally we also try to achieve a Low Drag Approach (LDA) to further reduce the environmental impact, ideally we want the thrust lever to be at idle from TOD all the way until a 4nm final! Although not mandatory it is certainly desired and a lot of airports monitor aircraft for CDA compliance. Sometimes it's simply impossible due to perhaps an altitude restriction or if say you fly an approach using V/S which requires a level segment prior to the Final Approach Fix. Hope this helped! FD2S.
Hi, really like your videos. Learn sooo much from them. I am practising landing a 737 on Xplane 11 at LOWI (Innsbruck) from the west side. There are many approaches to runway 08 and was wondering which is best for a Cat C aircraft and how YOU would approach and land this runway.
Another high quality tutorial. When you fly the real world 737 at let's say FL360 at a speed of about .81 Mach, is the nose of the aircraft slightly pitched up? If so, about how many degrees?
Hi 702Wolfi Pretty much all level flight stages are flown at an attitude with the nose above the horizon. .81 is pretty fast! Generally we wouldn't operate above .80 and the reference attitude at FL360 at around .78 for a 60 tonne aircraft would be approximately 2.5 NUP. Flying below 5000ft 5 NUP and 60% N1 is a good reference attitude and thrust setting to maintain altitude at the up speed. Take a look at the Flight With Unreliable Airspeed in the PMDG manual which gives you pretty much all the attitude and thrust settings for every stage of flight! Good Luck! FD2S.
I'm thinking you might have been 1,200 feet high on the VNAV because of the CRZ altitude set in the FMC?? Just in case there was another altitude set in there and you had to "Re-Cruz" the FMC Alt. Great videos BTW...
Hi Mike, Just a Dell XPS (9530) Laptop, nothing special! CPU: Intel i7 RAM: 16GB Graphics: NVIDIA GT 750M Solid State Hard drive SATA 512GB I might be upgrading to a high spec PC soon, I'll need the communities help to help me choose a decent machine! FD2S.
Great video again, i just wonder FIXes for arrival point. You always put 4 and 10 nm ring for approach. Is that fix procedure or according to chart? also which altitude OR which nm we should exactly lower the gear?
Emre Matesli I think 10 miles is the FAF (final approach fix) as depicted on the charts. And 4 miles to configure for full flaps and gear. You can add the fix (radial/distance on the cdu as depicted on the approach chart as an aid for the pilot. Let's see what he has to say.
Hi Emre! The fix rings are based on the landing runway, for example in this tutorial in the fix page I entered RW12. 10nm for the latest point at which Flap 1 must be selected. 4nm for the latest point to configure Gear Down, Flap 15 Hope this helped answer your query! FD2S.
Hey im wondering what would You do if You were preapering for departure and Atis was like almost 30min old Do You wait for weather update or Calculate on old data? Let's say that atis was published 20mins ago and You've just closed the doors and are about to begin pushback ? I hope You get the point 😉 Thanks
Hi Piotr The ATIS will be updated sooner if there is a sudden weather change at the airport. Otherwise we just use the latest reported ATIS! If we're on the ground for a while we'll check it periodically to see if there has been any significant changes. FD2S.
Hi ThoAxeTheThunder, You're quite right! At 5:02 I mention how I'll set up for the Approach at our alternate airport which included setting the Landing Altitude on the overhead panel. FD2S.
Great vid, btw an unrelated question, could you tell me if the cockpit geometry (especially windscreen) is at all noticably incorrect on the pmdg 737 ? Is your perspective different when you seat on the real one ?
Hi Mozoto, thanks a lot! I use a utility called EZDOK and the virtual cockpit exclusively for my tutorials. I've set the position to pretty much match the correct seating position in the flightdeck for both the Captain and First Officer, essentially to have a seating position so you can just about see the top of the glareshield. With the limitations involved using FSX the perspective is suitable and it's as good as you can get it without being sat in the real aircraft but the same applies for any aircraft you fly on a home simulator! Hope this helped to answer your query! FD2S.
Hi Francesco. It's a pretty accurate rendition of the aircraft and it has been programmed accurately. There are a few quirks/differences but the model itself is sound and it flies reasonably true to the real thing. Attitude and thrust settings for a given configuration are pretty close to the real aircraft and to what you get with a full motion Level D sim. Have a great weekend! FD2S.
Hi Kian, I've noted it down. Using the ACP correctly is something guys on their type rating take a while to get their head round! I'm planning on covering everything on this aircraft which will probably need +1000 videos! FD2S.
No problem :) just something covering how to listen in on a second frequency such as ATIS, and maybe the WX radar. No worries anyway whenever you get a cance. Thanks for the quick reply. Kian
Well I can help you answer that question! Generally both the Capt and F/O will have their MIC SELECTOR on VHF 1 meaning both pilots can talk to ATC , VHF 1 is typically set using the Top Left Radio Tuning Panel. If we want to listen to the ATIS we tune the frequency on VHF 2, typically selected as the Top Right Radio Tuning Panel, and make it the active frequency on VHF2 PM would then select the Receiver Switch for VHF 2 (The white button with the black arrow) and then he can listen to the broadcast. I hope this helped answer your query. FD2S.
Say you were flying a LOC approach (no ils) and it was foggy conditions... how would you then know the altitude you should be at without PAPI and glideslope?
Hello & thanks for the great work. Question about diverts. Who makes the decision as to the divert destination. Do you tell ATC where you’d like to divert to or do they instruct you. Or maybe some of them just tell you where to $!.,*&€ go! 🤬
Hello flightdeck 2sim, I would like to know what software do you use to have your ofp? It looks like simbrief but me, simbrief does not give me the routes for alternates airports, it makes me a direct ... How do you get alternates routes? Thank you and see you soon, Alexis
Hi Alexis, I'm using existing LIDO OFP's from my operator, I'm guessing sim brief uses a Lido format and doesn't include alternate airports? I'm not too sure! Sorry I can't help you further! FD2S
Hi there, On the FIX Page on the FMC type in RW__ for the runway you're using or the 4 letter ICAO code of the airport you want the ring around and then put /___ for the distance from the airfield depicted as a ring. FD2S
Ok, this is incredible unlikely to happen but i am curious as what would happen IRL anyway: so the "main" airport got closed for whatever reason, you divert to the first secondary airport and enters the holding pattern since you have enough fuel for a full procedure, while in the pattern you use up most of your fuel and soon entering the 30 minute reserve, you get a landing clearance but since you are the unluckiest pilot on the planet this day, the airplane infront of you touch down to hard and a resulting nose gear failure and cant get off the runway. And the second secondary runway are now more than 30 minutes away, more than your reserve, what happens then? And also, how can you plan to avoid this scenario when you got diverted the first time? Sorry if this is a stupid question since the scenario is ridiculous but still curious what would happen if the pilots had the worst luck ever ;)
Hi Jesper! If you took minimum block fuel, arrived at your destination flying the full arrival and approach followed by a go around, the full missed approach procedure, STAR and full arrival at your alternate you should land with at least 30 minutes of fuel (In reality it's well in excess of this as you rarely fly the full arrival and we take extra fuel for weather and/or anticipated holding. Now let's imagine your version of events happened (extremely unlikely) and you were approaching final reserve at your alternate and then that airport closed, firstly you're having a REALLY bad day but it could happen! Firstly ANY TIME we believe that we will land close to but more than FIN RES (30 minutes) we will notify ATC and we would in this instance inform them that any further changes to our clearance could put us close to FIN RES and we would declare "min fuel". That is the first layer of protection and ATC should facilitate an expeditious arrival. Whenever we EXPECT to land with less than 30 minutes of fuel we must declare an emergency immediately which would allow ATC additional flexibility to send us to perhaps a military, closed or disused airfields. Hope this helped answer your query. FD2S.
Hi joespeed1952 That's because I don't want my personal life to be involved with my flightdeck2sim project! Previously on forums where I posted with my real name people would contact me directly on social media and incessantly ask for material/copies of manuals and checklists for the company I work for. As you have read my description you'll understand why I reiterate I am in no position to share/copy company material. All guidance is purely to enhance your home flight simulator experience. Any comments/view expressed do not represent the views of my company. I am more than happy to answer any question but not in direct relation to any airline/procedure hence why I use generic guidance from the FCTM and apply my SOP's without sharing any material. Unfortunately some people contacted my friends and partner too so I choose not to say exactly where I am, where I'm based and who I have worked/currently work for. It's something I hope you don't mind I'd like to respectfully keep anonymous. Thank you for your appreciation. FD2S.
@@flightdeck2simI know it is an old comment, I am so sorry to hear that, why are people sometimes such idiots on the internet (contacting friends/partner? WTF).
Yep, this was when I used the AVSIM forum years ago which required the use of a full name in forum posts. Some people had nothing better to do! Thanks for respecting my anonymity! FD2S
Hey, this doesn't work for me... I follow the instruction in your video and it just adds the alternate destination onto my initial intended waypoints increasing the NM significantly? What am I doing wrong? Thanks
Yep definitely the right ICAO but what it is doing is adding the diversion airport to my initial planned destinations flight plan in the FMC! I followed your tutorial to the letter, and it does this no matter which airport I plan to divert to?!
@@jasonsmart5957 i noticed the following: 1- FMC may keep some of the waypoints if the alternative airport can be achieved by using a part of the same original route. 2- FMC keeps the remaining STAR waypoints if you already have started the STAR procedure.
Just a question a picking a transition from the final way point of a star to the first fix of an approach. I get at some airports there are no transitions available as stated by fmc, but at others you get an option for transition. I can rarely find charts for transitions except maybe German airports for example so its kind of a guess to chose one and review it in ND to see if it looks reasonable. Do you always select one if available to aid vnav or only if atc assign one? I also get as you have said in the past that you normally get vectors to final anyway.
Hi steve man. It varies from Airport to Airport. Larger International Airports in Europe, as you mentioned, will typically offer Radar Vectors at some point during a STAR. When you're vectored onto a radar HDG we manipulate the FMC by basically joining the dots in the FMC to ensure there are no Route Discontinuities and to provide accurate guidance to ensure VNAV gives you accurate information during descent/approach. Other Airports might have a STAR which terminates at some point but you can select a applicable TRANSITION which is essentially routing from the termination point to the extended centerline for the runway in use. If expecting vectors we'd choose one roughly representing our expected routing to again provide accurate guidance for VNAV. Some destinations might have a STAR which terminates at a VOR over the airfield or put you in a position which is not appropriate for the runway in use! You might fly something like a teardrop procedure from the VOR to the runway or be vectored way before you reach the VOR. You then have to manipulate and create waypoints in the FMC based on your expected routing. It can be difficult to plan an Approach and Arrival and in reality ATC can change the routing at very short notice. It's worth noting that Speed/Altitude restrictions built into approaches can sometimes leave aircraft high/low on profile so you might have to modify them to ensure you can maintain a continuous descent. Hope this helped answer your query! FD2S.
Thanks FD2S for the detailed reply! One other thing I have noticed, when deleting an 'at or above' restriction to see where VNAV will actually put you on an approach (great tip I might add) it sometimes gives a lower altitude than the minimum. So for example if its /4000A and you delete it temporarily it may come up with /3569. Have you noticed this? Is it just a PMDG thing?
Not at all! As I mentioned above some Altitude restrictions built into approaches can sometimes leave aircraft high! You have to comply with the restriction then after the waypoint manage the energy whilst descending unless ATC specifically say the restriction no longer applies. FD2S.
Doooh, I answered my own question in my own head 30 seconds after hitting reply. I get now that once you delete the restriction VNAV assumes its no longer there and so can do as it needs. So I get you can be left high or low by a restriction as you say. Once again thanks for getting back and keep the vids coming. Have to say this is the only channel where I read through all the comments as there are some great questions asked....and answered!

Hi Maik. The PMDG have modified the FMC so you can setup Airline Specific callouts an configurations. It's under the MENU button on the FMC. Consult your PMDG Instructional Manual for all the callout and configs available, it's quite comprehensive! FD2S.
Don't the newer FMC software revisions include an alternate route to preprogram in the event you need to do this? I've seen people on the PMDG forums request this newer revision. Would be nice but honestly I rarely need to being a sim and all. What PMDG needs to fix isn't so much the baro dial. They have a lot of things they could improve, but the QOTSII 744 has a terrible baro dial. I'm surprised anyone likes it. If you try to dial it like the NGX is won't allow single digit values, such as 478 feet, rather 480. And the rotary method is a mess
Yeah they have a RTE 2 function, our newer aircraft have them but we're not permitted to use it! The BARO dial in the real aircraft increases in increments of 10ft if you hold it down, you can set 1000ft in about 3 seconds! FD2S.
Does the same thing apply to the Altitude rotary? In the sim it can take ages to scroll through the settings. In the Aerosoft Airbus sim it allows increments of 1000ft (don't know whether the same applies in the real a/c though)
It feels realistic enough for me, the height of the VC and overall dimensions are ok. The default turning circle is not terribly accurate but there is a fix floating around for that. FD2S
Hi Shaquelle. The 737 is ETOPS certified so long as all the required equipment is fitted/installed and the airline has ETOPS approval. Some operators might not have ETOPS certification. My current outfit is not ETOPS approved as all our flights are close enough to an alternate airport. FD2S.

I'm planning on stepping through the fuel taken on a typical sector and what it's all for (TRIP/ALTERNATE/CONTINGENCY/ALTERNATE etc). You can typically land with around 3000kg if your alternate isn't very far from your destination.
FD2S.
Use fuelplanner.com
Many thanks for your videos. I am learning a lot.

I've found all of your videos good and informative. All of us appreciate what you do. Thanks...
Hi,
I have a question: does the plane calculate the TOD when diverting by itself? Thank you.
Good day!
T/D will update based on several factors, updating your CRZ level will generate a new TOD for example
Hi 702Wolfi
Pretty much all level flight stages are flown at an attitude with the nose above the horizon. .81 is pretty fast!
Good Luck!
FD2S.
I see. I guess I slow down a bit haha. Thanks again FD2S!
I'm thinking you might have been 1,200 feet high on the VNAV because of the CRZ altitude set in the FMC?? Just in case there was another altitude set in there and you had to "Re-Cruz" the FMC Alt. Great videos BTW...
You’re fantastic, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Are you playing any other games? If you're only playing fsx your laptop is fine and it's not worth upgrading!
4nm for the latest point to configure Gear Down, Flap 15
Hope this helped answer your query!

Hi Piotr
The ATIS will be updated sooner if there is a sudden weather change at the airport. Otherwise we just use the latest reported ATIS! If we're on the ground for a while we'll check it periodically to see if there has been any significant changes.
FD2S.
Hey great tutorial but I have a question. If you divert to another airport, don't you have to change the landing altitude for the cabin pressure?
Hi ThoAxeTheThunder,
You're quite right! At 5:02 I mention how I'll set up for the Approach at our alternate airport which included setting the Landing Altitude on the overhead panel.
FD2S.
Great stuff !
FD2S.
What do you think about the realism of this addon compared to the real aircraft?
Anyway nice videos, I love them!

Nothing gives me a woody like reading stories about epic CRM in terrifying situations.
Hi :) would you be able to do a tutorial on how the radio panels work? Such as monitoring a frequency while currently active on another ?
Hi Kian,
I've noted it down.
If we want to listen to the ATIS we tune the frequency on VHF 2, typically selected as the Top Right Radio Tuning Panel, and make it the active frequency on VHF2
PM would then select the Receiver Switch for VHF 2 (The white button with the black arrow) and then he can listen to the broadcast.
I hope this helped answer your query.

Hello & thanks for the great work. Question about diverts. Who makes the decision as to the divert destination. Do you tell ATC where you’d like to divert to or do they instruct you. Or maybe some of them just tell you where to $!.,*&€ go! 🤬
Hello flightdeck 2sim,
I would like to know what software do you use to have your ofp? It looks like simbrief but me, simbrief does not give me the routes for alternates airports, it makes me a direct ... How do you get alternates routes?
Thank you and see you soon,
Alexis
Hi Alexis,
I'm using existing LIDO OFP's from my operator, I'm guessing sim brief uses a Lido format and doesn't include alternate airports? I'm not too sure! Sorry I can't help you further!
FD2S
I have a short question. How do you turn on the distance rings around an airport? I never found an option to turn it on
Hi there,
On the FIX Page on the FMC type in RW__ for the runway you're using or the 4 letter ICAO code of the airport you want the ring around and then put /___ for the distance from the airfield depicted as a ring.
FD2S
How can i get the VSD to appear? Im in X-Plane 11 using the 737 but the VSD i can confirm is modeled.
Push CTR twice on your EFIS.
FD2S.

May I ask why your About page on your channel is so vague? "established airline", "my operator", "major European airport", etc?
Hi joespeed1952
That's because I don't want my personal life to be involved with my flightdeck2sim project!

@@flightdeck2simI know it is an old comment, I am so sorry to hear that, why are people sometimes such idiots on the internet (contacting friends/partner? WTF).

Hey, this doesn't work for me... I follow the instruction in your video and it just adds the alternate destination onto my initial intended waypoints increasing the NM significantly? What am I doing wrong? Thanks
Hi Jason,
I'm not too sure. Are you inserting the correct 4 Letter ICAO Airport code in the FMC on Route Page 1? That is all you need to do!
FD2S
Yep definitely the right ICAO but what it is doing is adding the diversion airport to my initial planned destinations flight plan in the FMC! I followed your tutorial to the letter, and it does this no matter which airport I plan to divert to?!
@@jasonsmart5957 i noticed the following:
1- FMC may keep some of the waypoints if the alternative airport can be achieved by using a part of the same original route.

Where can you programm the minimums so it says "400-300-hundred above-200-minimums"? Thanks
Hi Maik.
The PMDG have modified the FMC so you can setup Airline Specific callouts an configurations. It's under the MENU button on the FMC. Consult your PMDG Instructional Manual for all the callout and configs available, it's quite comprehensive!
FD2S.
flightdeck2sim found it... Thank you so much! Ps. I love your videos and i learn so much from them
Don't the newer FMC software revisions include an alternate route to preprogram in the event you need to do this?
In the Aerosoft Airbus sim it allows increments of 1000ft (don't know whether the same applies in the real a/c though)
flightdeck2sim how do you feel about the dimensions of the NGX compared to the real thing? People really bad mouth that aspect of it, no pun intended.
Yeah the same as well!
FD2S.
It feels realistic enough for me, the height of the VC and overall dimensions are ok. The default turning circle is not terribly accurate but there is a fix floating around for that.

is the 737 ng etops certified??
Hi Shaquelle.
The 737 is ETOPS certified so long as all the required equipment is fitted/installed and the airline has ETOPS approval.
Some operators might not have ETOPS certification. My current outfit is not ETOPS approved as all our flights are close enough to an alternate airport.
