Honestly, I'm glad you got around to reviewing the Spider-Man franchise. The very first Spider-Man is still one of the best Superhero films ever. The characters & story are still good & the soundtrack is still worth listening to. As for the movie itself, this film gets a Platinum standard certification rating.
Nothing beats this one, this is by far the best one. People today don’t understand, this one hits you the most emotionally and hits right in the heart. The great power comes great responsibility, the death of uncle Ben, every villain wasn’t really evil but had an accident that made them the way they are so you kinda feel sorry for them and I feel they took these movies way more seriously compared to Tom hollands. I can’t stand the goofy teenager Tobey and Andrew were way better in my opinion of taking situations and the character seriously and having funny quotes for the side.
This isn’t by far the best one to me, but it’s still damn good!
@@IdiocyShow What's your favourite then?
@@internetual7350 Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite of the Spider-Man movies
@@IdiocyShow Ah, good choice!
For me the Spider-Man films go:
1. Into the Spider Verse
2. Spider-Man 2
3. Spider-Man
With numbers 1 & 2 damn near tied
Some stuff haven’t aged well, but it’s still a must watch along side with the others in the trilogy
Honestly the only thing that's aged in my eyes is some of the CGI there's some the CG still holds up but the part with the CGI Green Goblin jumping onto his glider that has aged poorly and it kind of sticks a bit out like a swore thumb
I’d argue that the Goblin looms over Peter throughout the entire trilogy. In the first one, he’s the first true big baddie that he has to fight, and he gets absolutely brutalized by him in that final fight. Then it’s revealed that it’s Harry’s dad, and Harry develops a complete hatred of Spidey throughout the following film. Peter sees his best friend becoming an alcoholic, Harry feels like Peter is on the side of Spidey and feels betrayed by him, and then nearly kills him before finding out his identity, then in the 3rd film is all comes full circle as Harry then becomes the goblin, with the persona essentially being reincarnated to haunt Peter yet again. And then for Harry to sacrifice himself at the very end, both mirroring Norman’s death and being the polar opposite of it, I found it amazing. Goblin was definitely the villain that had the most impact throughout the entire trilogy
This was the first movie I ever watched as a kid so this movie holds a special place in my heart. It’s made me a fan of movies and superheroes! I can’t wait till No Way Home releases on Thursday! I’ll be there at the premiere.
for me I haven’t been a fan since Tobey wasn’t Spider-Man tbh
Same this movie came out when I was 2 and I instantly fell in love with the character and like I watched this movie so much on vhs as a kid and like these 3 films was a big part of my childhood like I love Tobeys version of spiderman 💯
@@destinedforgreatness3030 James Franco did great too, Spider-Man 2 was actually the first movie I watched too man. Such a classic
@@josephc5116 Tobey will always be my favorite but I’ve liked what they’ve done with the character to an extent with each iteration. Tom is great for what the MCU is going for and I feel like Andrew’s portrayal got snuffed due to studio interference and terrible writing.
@@josephc5116 yeah true like these movies are so classic and all of us fans that are now in our early or even later to mid 20s are all gonna feel a lot of nostalgia if we see tobeys spiderman in the new movie bc this was he was our childhood spiderman 💯
I was 7 years old when Spider-Man 2002 released and Green Goblin scared the absolute shit out of me lol
🤣🤣🤣

This movie suckd dog turds 💩
I love this movie! I honestly don't understand people not liking Dafoe's performance as Green Goblin. They say it's too campy or too over-the-top, but THAT'S HOW VILLAINS ALWAYS USED TO BE, for the most part! Maybe I'm dating myself as a 90s kid, but all the best villains are over-the-top. That's what I was used to growing up. A lot of modern movie villains are lame by comparison, IMO.
Hadn't realized that people thought so poorly of Dafoe as The Green Goblin. That performance RULED!!!!!
That’s crazy that people think that. Dafoe as green goblin is one of the best villains in film history. Perfectly casted
Becouse he sucks as the goblin and the costume sucks too
@@matthewlogan4267L take
@@matthewlogan4267ur stupid if u think Dafoe sucks as the Green Goblin.
I get emotionally moved to tears by both Spider-Man(2002) and Spider-Man-2(2004) they’re both movies that really mean everything to me as they’re the ones that kicked off my interest in movies
I get choked up revisiting both of them
How about the third one? Yeah, I know it didn't go so well, but the third act of that film was the best part of it.
@@lunarose698 the 3rd one is a crushing disappointment for me

Cody really is right about how crazy the hype for this was. It felt like Spider-Man was everywhere in the lead up for this film. There was Spider-Man cereal, Spider-Man pop tarts, Spider-Man shirts, and toys. It’s something that I’m very happy to have been around for because it’s a once in a lifetime experience. For a lot of people I think the curiosity simply was what does a big budget Spider-Man film look like. Now that there’s been x amount of Spider-Man films that’s no longer a novelty.
I was born in 1992 and I’ve always said that within my lifetime Spider-Man 2002 and The Dark Knight are the only comic book films that I would describe as an event upon release.
There really is something special about these Raimi movies that studios just can't seem to replicate nowadays. Even the third one, as messy and insane as it is, is still full of memorable fights, great character moments, and epic music. I also just love how meme-able this trilogy is. Every line that comes out of Tobey's mouth is pure gold.
Facts
I think a lot of it is that those movies were very zany and somewhat unconventional for superhero films, at least at the time. Things like the raindrops falling on my head montage made those movies just so lovable.
If I remember correctly, Spider-Man was the first live action movie I ever watched and it made me love cinema as a little kid. Such a classic!
Me too, I remember trying to reineract that last goblin fight scene with my toys lol, something about the way its edited made me apriciate the movie from a technical standpoint even tho i didn't know what that ment at the time
I'm so sorry that this movie ruined your life
This is my favorite out of the whole trilogy. I think it nails the characters of Peter Parker AND Spider-Man so perfectly.
Spiderman 2 to me does that better than the first.
Spider-Man 2 is my personal favorite comic book film of all time.
@@blakedelacruz9496 it's as close to being objectively the best as a movie can be
I grew up with Raimi’s trilogy and was a teenager when TASM came out. I enjoy all three version of Spider-Man but the other two don’t make me feel what The original Spider-Man does. Each story is so compelling and beautiful especially the second one. I also love the cheesiness of it.
I swear Cody lives in a different world than me. As far as I've seen growint up and seeing all the spider man film incarnations I have never heard anything but respect for the first two Raimi films. Even when the Andrew Garfield films came out they were criticized to hell for not being like Raimi (TASM2 is like the least well received critically and commercially out of all the spidey films). Now almost 3 movies after being introduced to Tom Holland's spidey Sam Raimi's still seems to be the fan favorite
Seen this 5 times in the theaters. Great times. Hasn't aged well, but still holds a place in my heart. The good outweighs the bad. Spider-man 2 is still my favorite live action film.
This film holds near my heart as one of the greatest superhero films ever. Both the first and second. This was the film I watched a lot when I was in middle school, it helped me when I was going through the worst time of my life with depression and when I was bullied very heavily every day. I never connected and relate to any other character than Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Even my friends think I look like Peter Parker and they call me that!
I feel the same way about the character. Spider-Man and Wolverine properties were so important to my child-hood as well.
I love this one a lot. I do believe that the 2nd film fo the trilogy is the best by far.
No this movie blow dog turds 💩
I have to admit. Out of all the iterations of Spider-men that have come and gone. Toby Maguire remains my favorite live action version out of all who portrayed the character. The Sam Rami Spider-Man Trilogy, despite its faults, is still entertaining after all these years. Hopefully we'll see this version in No Way Home and maybe beyond.
Thanks a lot Cody for getting to this review series, we need more people to remind the generations now and the generations after just how great these movies were and what they meant to us growing up.
You ROCK man!!!
I think for me, this movie is just an overall great great comic book movie. It had the nerdy kid who becomes the hero, the bully, the love interest, great characters, a great villain, and awesome story. This movie jump started everything we have today!
I get emotionally moved to tears by both Spider-Man(2002) and Spider-Man-2(2004) both movies mean everything to me as they’re the ones that kicked off my interest in movies
I get choked up revisiting both of them
I vividly remember the theater being PACKED opening night back in '02. I was 11 and it was the first movie that felt like an event.
I love the raimi trilogy Cody, and you reviewing them is something I didn’t know I needed till now!!
I still get teared up rewatching both Spider-Man(2002) and Spider-Man-2(2004) as they’re both emotionally moving for me and they both really are a big part of why I love movies
I owe it all to both of them that’s why they both mean everything to me

You know with Spider-Man: No Way Home coming out next week and Spidey reaching 20 years it’s made me realize how much I’ve been alive. I’m 22 so I’m old enough to have experienced all three Spideys. Even old enough to remember seeing Fantastic 4 & Fantastic SS, X-Men, Dark Knight everything before the MCU and comic book boom. I’m blessed to have been born to be able to experience comic book movies before and after the MCU
Facts bro I’m finna be 22 soon and I’m glad I’m also old enough to have gotten to watch all the 2000s superhero movies prior to like the mcu and stuff like I feel bad for those who didn’t grow up in that time like tobeys spiderman was everything to us kids in the. 2000s 💯

Grew up on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, will always absolutely love this trilogy.
I’ve always loved this movie definitely an important comic book film and it deserves it’s respect
I've heard a few people crap on this film but for the most part it's well liked. It's also the most true to the source material than the others and the Green Goblin was awesome!
Great review! The Raimi trilogy is my favourite superhero trilogy of all times! I even love it’s many flaws. I'm seeing Spider-Man Mo Way Home super early, next Wednesday 10:00 AM EST! As a person who always end up spoiled by social media, seeing this movie before reviewers is a blessing!!
Love the Raimi movies, they felt big budget blockbusters with great action sequences, a good cast & emotional dramatic storytelling.
As good as Tom Holland is i find his supporting cast are poor, Maguire had kirsten Dunst & James Franco to bounce off & also had the best actors as villains.
A fantastic review Cody you summed the movie up perfectly.
im soooooo happy that you finally are doing full reviews for ramis trilogy. thanks for making my day
Spider Man 2 is definitely my favorite. It gives the most sympathetic Doc Ock origin ever. I love Alfred Molina’s performance and the fact that he’s not just a straight up evil guy.
I saw 1 and 2 in theaters back in the day, still the best spidey movies to me
Nice man, awesome video. Im so on this Spiderman ride till NWH. Rami's trilogy and Toby's Spiderman will always be my favorite. Spiderman 2 is possibly the greatest comic book film ever. But love this first film and what it brought to the table. So hyped for Resurrections, looking forward to your Matrix coverage as well. And hoping NWH has some surprises still.🤘
I slightly remember this was the very first DVD we got with our DVD player. It was kinda big for us to move up from VHS lol this movie will always be a classic
Doesn’t get much better than one of my favorite RUclipsrs reviewing my all time favorite movie! Much love man!
I remember seeing this in the theater being blown away by just how great this was. Highly agree with what you said about people's perceptions of older movies. I guess that's a generation thing. Many people dismiss the classics but they'll never understand the impact have because they weren't there in 2002 . Or those that weren't there in 89 when Batman was so huge, it wasn't just a movie. It was an event. That summer you couldn't escape the bat symbol because it was everywhere. 2002 was very similar. Spider-Man was all over the place. Even stole some thunder away from Episode II that summer. Great review, Cody.
We park our cars in the same garage.
Naw this jawn maaaad corny!
My Favorite movie of allll time, constantly had this playing when I was a kid
Gotta comment on the writing of Mary Jane in this first movie. Her arc is one of the beautiful and tragic of any comic book movie ever. She comes from an abusive home and is always seeking validation. To be seen. Being with the most popular guy in school was a way to be seen. To be seen with value. Same with dating the rich kid. However, neither Harry nor Flash ever saw her as her. Flash saw her as a prop. Harry only saw what he wanted her to be as opposed to who she actually was. The only person who ever saw her for her, was Peter. When she finally chooses to be with the only person who has ever seen her, he turns her down. Shit is brutal. I love her character and her portrayal. There is more depth to that character than most give credit.
Loved the review, sir.
I loved this movie as a kid growing up it means a lot to me I was already a big fan of Spider man this movie made me a fan forever summer 2002 I was about to be 10 years old at the time when I saw it good times
Hell yeah dude super hyped for this review series
As a long time sub of yours and Spider-Man especially Tobey Maguires Spider-Man changed my life and I’m glad your finally talking about them 😊
A true classic never goes out of style
Well this sure did
This will be forever my favorite spider man movie/movies. Toby is the perfect peter parker and the spider man parts may not be the best they are entertaining as hell. One of the first action movies I watched and will always be in my heart
Spiderman reviews now!!!???? Let’s go!!!
My favourite movie of all time. It came out when I was 2 and I watched it multiple times a day ever since. Helped me through the lowest part of my life. Perfect Aunt May and Uncle Ben & the score 🔥🔥
I don’t know if I was more obsessed with a movie trilogy in elementary school more than this. I remember friends and I bragging about getting to see it multiple times in theatres. You’re so right about people forgetting the cultural moment this first movie was. These first two are still some of the best comic book movies I’ve seen.
I remember when I went to see this in theaters, I was a young kid. I had no idea what a comic book was or who Spider-Man even was. Truth be told I was more excited to see if we got a Freddy vs Jason trailer in the theater (we didn't). Boy did I underestimate what Spider-Man did to me. Been a webhead since. Thank you Raimi.
Cody, you are out here really killing it with all this content. Keep it up man 🔥
I actually remember this movie came it was on a Friday May 3rd, I was 11 yrs old in the 5th grade and my late uncle took me to Applebee's and we went to see Spiderman which the place was packed and it ended up being a good movie
One of the very first superhero films I saw as a kid, this movie basically introduced me to MARVEL
I agree this Raimi trilogy really looks AMAZING ( no pun intended) on Bluray 🥳👌🏻
This trilogy just cemented my love for Spiderman prior to this film, I grew up with the 90's Animated Spiderman series and I loved just as a kid there was a hero that I could relate too. A revisit of the series is definitely needed.
This came out the year i was born, 5 months before i was born i loved these movies growing up!
Literally agree with every word! Great review as always my man! Looking forward to the rest!
Always been one of my favorite of the Spider-Man Films.
Great Review bro I agree I love the heart of these movies as well ❤️. That’s the one reason why I appreciate them so much.
I still watch this like once a year lol. 🕷🕸
Toby Maguire did a fantastic job as Peter Parker and Spiderman. I was never impressed by Dafoe's portrayal as Goblin, I thought he was miscast and as you mentioned the costume/suit could have been much better. But this is a great movie, I still enjoy it to this day and it's mainly because of Toby's performance.
In my best Green Goblin voice "Can Cody Leach come out to play"
This first Spider-Man film is easily my second favorite Spider-Man film behind Spider-Man 2 (2004).
My favorite marvel superhero film of all time.
This and Spider-Verse are my favorite Spider-Man movies. Dafoe is amazing.
I never had big nostalgia with this movie, but over time im started like and appreciate this movie more.
Back in 2002 i was more Lilo And Stitch and Ice Age guy, but is still one of my favorite superhero movies.
Tobey Maguire always will be my Spiderman, but for me Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin and J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson are the true show stealers and Danny Elfmans score is music to my ears.
Great review Cody and take care and stay safe 🤘🕷🕸.
The very first fight between goblin and Spider-Man at Times Square was FUCKING awesome, as soon as you see goblin flying around the score kicks in and the music made this scene phenomenal
I’ve been waiting for you to do this series forever. Can’t wait for the rest.
Once I saw the 27 min runtime I immediately made some popcorn 😂
Long time fan, just found these videos. I love it!!!! Thanks for the content
You forgot to mention the brilliance of JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson that was so good that literally in the MCU there is no one who can play him but Simmons.
Spider-Man and American Pie are the two essential High School movies for me.
I saw this in theaters with my dad and loved it I believe I seen all 3 in theaters
your rant on the stupidity between generations not acknowledging wut came before and tryna change the story of history was the best thing ive heard this week
Used to be my favourite as a kid but now spider man 2 is my favourite
My first exposure to Spider-Man was the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon that was on Cartoon Network.
This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters and I remember being amazed at him jumping rooftops
I missed the part where that’s my problem
This movie was my Childhood and Tobey Maguire is still my favorite Spider-Man.
I love this movie. And I personally don't hate the Green Goblin costume. I'm glad we’ll see it for at least a portion of NWH. I think NWH will focus on Goblin’s psychosis, which will make for a captivating villain.
The Power Ranger suit for Green Goblin is understandable considering they were probably wanted to avoid a Batman Returns situation (where the Penguin was so terrifying many kids were left crying and parents complained about it).
Always remember, Spider-Man (2002) is a thanksgiving movie lol
Yesss!
Not the biggest comic book film fan but I’ll never forget my Grandpa took me to this movie when I was 4 and it was the first movie I ever saw in the theater
Couldn't agree more with your review, Cody. I was 29 when this movie came out in the Spring of 2002. We had just gone through 9/11 the previous Fall & needed something fun in our lives again; Spider-Man came out at the perfect time. Sam Raimi has always said this was how he remembered Spider-Man when he read it growing up in the late 60s & the 70s (he didn't want to include Venom in Spider-Man 3 because he wasn't one of the classic villains, but the studio forced him to shoe-horn the character into the story), & I think he captured the essence of the character's early years perfectly.
I also loved how Marvel was already floating the idea of a shared universe as early as Spider-Man 2 (a mention of Dr. Strange, a brief appearance of Thomas Jane's Punisher from the 2003 film); the Sam Raimi trilogy was an awesome set of films, & a glimpse of great things to come...
the punisher was released in 2004 not in 2003
This trilogy got me into the marvel universe. As some stuff didn't age ao well, this is still a fantastic superhero movie and is my absolute favorite.
I have so many fond memories of watching the Tobey movies when I was around four and five. I even like Spiderman 3, even if I don't have the connection to it that I do the first two.
18:42 Raimi based the trilogy on the 60's Silver Age comics Spider-Man started out in so that's why they're like that.
I am not a fan of Tobeys spiderman but the costume and the movies themselves are complete classics to me. Authenticity obviously isn't great but they were huge.
I am SO EXCITED for the Green Goblins return! 😱
Grew up with it… love the trilogy, that OG green goblin mask is wild but I honestly don’t think it would’ve worked for the tone of the movie like you said.
came for the horror, stayed for EVERYTHING
I didn't really know about the director until last year when I watched the Evil Dead movies for the first time. I loooove both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.♡♡ Makes me love these films even more because of them!!
Yes Cody! I’ve been waiting for you to review this franchise😊
Tobey Maguire will always be MY Spider-Man. I believe I wore this VHS tape out. I quite enjoy most of the campiness (not just because I love camp/kitsch art) and think it adds to the authentic “Golden Era comic book” feel while having a modern, “post-Internet” aesthetic. The aughts were the shit and man do I miss those days 😂
I’d love to see a ranking list from you ranking the castings for marvel and dc characters. Not really how the characters were written but the casting choices.
Man I'm shocked J Jonah Jameson wasn't in the positives, easily one of the funniest portrayals of the character. Good review still tho made me wanna watch this movie again.
I'll disagree that Green Goblin is one and done in this series, since Norman does appear as ghost to Harry and influences his actions for the next two movies. The payoff though not as good in Spider-Man 3 (Thanks Avi Arad).
One of my favorite movies of all time
It's probably 10000% Nostalgia but man I've always loved Rami's Goblin suit .
I’m finna be 22 and this was the movie that I fell in love with the character i watched it everyday on vhs as a kid and these 3 films was a big part of my early childhood years and I hope we see tobey in the new movie I might fr cry 💯
Classic Spider-Man movie and I seems to be the only person that didn’t mind green goblin suit
I've always found the Garfield years the most flawed. Sam rami has classic comic book feel and homecoming series has marvel universe charm. None of them are perfect but the og trilogy was well done and fun. Spiderman 2 is the best spiderman in my book.
7:29 I agree there needs to be more standalone superhero films now. Not everything has to be part of a shared universe like the MCU and DCEU.
I disagree with Cody on Mary Jane.
Having her Taylor Swifting through guys in high school and college is EXACTLY what anyone can expect from a hottie that more than one guys desires.
Women leads whom are always unrealistically available (or paired up with the biggest doughe imaginable they can't drop quicky enough) is too often and too unrealistic.
This is way more real: having the hottie wanting the hero but not waiting on him indefinitely to grow some balls and make him actually compete for her...
This Sam Raimi Spiderman Trilogy is my favorite always was and still is I don’t think they’ll top it!! As far as my favorite entry it has to be a tie between this one and 2 because the nostalgia for this first movie I was like 10-11 when I saw it when it came out then a yr later I was entering Middle School and revisited it and related with it more being that I going through puberty and I was a loner that didn’t have much friends so being introduced to Peter Parker in the beginning of the movie I found somewhat relatable and obviously I LOVE Willem Dafoe him being Green Goblin won me over instantly the story and origins of Spiderman was simple yet captivating and I hold this movie in high regards for that reason alone and this fresh take, objectively Spiderman 2 is the best total masterpiece but the OG Spiderman imo from my reasons and what this movie meant to me I put on the same pedestal as 2. Also 3 is still amazing I LOVE this whole Trilogy!!
