    I try to learn new things from these type of demonstrations but I end up sitting back in my chair with a beer, relaxing, letting the show take me on a fantastic journey. Your musical picture show is always brilliant.

    Thanks for the feedback. Yes, it was Mypaint in development version at this moment very similar to last Mypaint 1.1 released. The other software is also open-source and named Krita , it's now my favorite painting software.

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  12 лет назад

    This is Mypaint developpement version under Linux , near to be the next version , Mypaint 1.1 . The brush I use at start is a new brush I made ; I distribute it under my blog ( website link in the comment ) in the resource categorie. I also use at this moment the new line tools.

    Sure, most of my brush are part of the open-source project , but if you look for my last one, check my blog ( website adress in the comment ) I have a 'resources' category with all my brush / palette and tools to share.

    The great artist is not by the software that the used, it's within them, achieved from practice everyday, and their ability to maximising the using of the app, and you show me your ability to maximising free software to produce a great result, you are awesome :-)

    This one was done with a Wacom Intuos 3 A4 mapped in proportionnal mode to a 1920x1200 screen. I also have a Cintiq 21UX , but I prefer the traditionnal tablet in most of the use case.

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  12 лет назад

    yes, upscale is a resize operation to a greater number of pixel in width and height, to match around 2500px minimum width and 3200px height ( roughly around a A4 @ 300dpi ).
    About the color in Krita , I switch because Krita have more blending modes than Mypaint, and also tools as Level and HSV saturation ; a bit more advanced to tweak colors.
    Note : Both software works in harmony with the *.ora ( open raster ) file format, with layer and all. A luck :)

    Hey, thx. Probably this video wasn't on my channel. To see all my videos & artwork , go on my website ( link in description of the video ) then select 'Blog' . On the blog categories, I have tutorial / Videos / etc... if it's not around, it wasn't a video of mine.

  • @DavidRevoy

    Thx ! Yes, you can google for Mypaint, and install the 1.0 version on any Windows. This is a portage, so maybe not as smooth than on Linux. The newest 1.1 is still not ported to Windows due to the mix of a technical problem with graphic tablet driver and lake of volunteer for the moment to make a big fix on Windows platform. Linux developpers worked to use on the next versions 1.2 a technologie that will probably ease the portage for the single Windows packager Mypaint team has.

  • @DavidRevoy

    Hi, I go to the Menu , then View, then Mirror Horizontal ( if you keep the mouse over the label , you can press at the same time a shortcut on keyboard to attribute it , I use the 'M' key , easy to remember )

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  12 лет назад

    On Linux, you can compile the development version or get fresh package via PPA. It's Mypaint 1.0 + almost one year of development on the top. It's still not finished enough to be the next Mypaint, but already stable. Visit my website ( in description ) to know how to get it, I write install guide.

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  12 лет назад

    Thanks ! the brush use ( with the preview icon writting '1' inside it and a yellow brush ) is similar to the one 'deevad/detail3' in set#2 but with a tiny amount of 'slow position tracking' to help doing smoother line. I will share it soon. Probably with another icon.

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  11 лет назад

    Bonsoir, oui, sous Krita en mode 'color' HSY . J'utilise aussi "overlay" pour la profondeur des teintes et "multiply" pour des pass de glacis. Quelques lumières avec "addition".

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  12 лет назад

    I switch at this moment to Krita ; mainly to upscale the sketch to a better resolution ; I needed more pixel to draw over the rough. Then in Krita, I draw the enveloppes/bones of the characters because Krita have also a move/rotate/scale tool , so I can tweak the position. Then I'm back to Mypaint because I prefer brush to draw there.

    Thank you so much for sharing not just the final rendering but the thought processes from conception to finish. Sometimes it's frustrating to study the fundamentals when I'm not so sure how to carry them into finished works. Beautiful and thorough example, thank you.

    Try it :) As all arts, it can be really simple and scale to the most complex thing ; and also can be done in no-time as well as can take eternity to achieve. Depend if you want to paint as Rothko or Bouguereau.

  • @DavidRevoy
    @DavidRevoy  11 лет назад

    Thx! I use this technics because my skill is limited. Grey to color tend to cut the brain effort in half while visualising the piece at first. So, I can visualise shapes and light at first and solve most of the issue without chroma problem.
    When I will be more skilled, I'll certainly do all in color from scratch.

On my blog post about the new brush for 1.1 , a user pasted a link to an adaptation of the brush kit for 1.0 . Read the comment, you should find them quickly ;-)

    Merci!

    Amazing to all be done with open source software too.. Can you give an idea about how/why you use all 3 of mypaint/Krita/Gimp in your workflow? I would have thought they all do similar things?

    Hm, interessting. Especially the *.ora support sounds good. I think I have to give it a try. BTW, I saw now that you did my favorite brushkit in mypaint. Unfortunately I have a bug in it since mypaint v 1.1. I will post a screenshot later on

    I use Kdenlive on my KDE desktop. So far, I did all Chaos&Evolutions DVD and Blend&Paint and all my video tutorial with it since 2009. 4 years of love :) But Kdenlive has little bugs here and there and is fragile to the update ( linked to so many library ). Still, I advice it.
    I still has to try OpenShot too, last screenshot I saw were really good.

    From this video, and your website I've become a fan. Liked, faved, subbed, faved and watched for DA. I had the thought of using Ubuntu for Krita, Mypaint, and Gimp (which I've used for years.) for a while now and recently started it so this was quite inspiring to see.
    I was also wondering if you had any more ergonomical tips for laptop + small tablet like my Bamboo, and if there is a comfortable way to lay down and draw or if I should give in and purchase a desk.

  • @DavidRevoy

    The main reason can be understood by the video date. September 2012. By this time Krita 2.5 had performance issue ( solved nowaday in Krita 2.6 and 2.7 ). Painting wasn't smooth ; and the smudge brush engine ( for wet effect ) wasn't fixed ; the color bleeding reacted very weirdly ( fixed also for 2.7 ). So, I was forced by this time for my daily work to switch from Mypaint - Gimp - Krita all the time. Newer dev version of Krita include now 95% of what I need.

    Please fill a bug report on the Krita bug tracker with the version you test, the brush/canvas size you use, your system specifications. Or at least on Krita's forum. The development team needs all of this information to know on what hardware Krita lags. This is important. Here on my machine and on developers hardware, last version literally flies ; but it does because of many feedbacks and works. Good luck !

    Not only the work is amazing , but also the Music fits perfect to this work ! Its a long video and usually i dont look at so long timelaps-videos... but in this work the meditation "tibet-like" music speed me down - and also the kind, how you work... You know, im quiet familiar with traditional art - with pencil, pastells, tempera, etc ... but i want to go for digitalpainting, as i see a lot of advantages against traditional art (for exampel a much faster workflow at the same quality). There is still room for traditional art - i think they can expand eachother (for example: it can be very useful i think, to do sketches on paper...because paper and pencil is much more mobile, than a tablet and laptop, which needs electrical power... Also i think a lot of: what it means, when my hand-moves (which are directly from my mind) only are "translated" into a approximation about it, where the pencil "reacts" directly to my mind through my hand... what this means for the accurate expression of my mind ? You know: wether a digitalpainting is wonderful, or not. Just imagine for example : you would make a gift for your girlfriend...and you can choose between : a printed artwork which you make with krita... or a traditional artwork which you made with your hand. Both you made in hours of work...in both there is your heart and soul..both can holded physically in the hands of your girlfriend... but something misses, isnt ? I think, the most girlfriends would prefer a handdrawed work, even if they dont can tell why...(because digital art came also from your core) ... And something about it, makes the difference... im still searching , what it could be... it seems metaphysical ... Maybe you had this thoughts too?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  11 лет назад

      Hey, thanks for the long and detailed comment about your thought. I came from traditionnal painting. I get what you want to say with this 'girlfriend present story'. Nothing replace a real drawing in hands ; the human scale ; the interraction with eyes directly ; the gesture feeling , etc... Digital painting helps for being precise for print industry and sharing artwork on screen. I keep sketching here on real paper ; unplugged . That's where I'm creative. Those videos are exeptions to my usual workflow ; it's harder for me to film myself drawing in real , then scan, then paint over. Hard to fix the camera, to get the good light... etc... But on my daily work , I do the 'traditionnal sketch' to 'digital painting' trip daily.

    • @PygmalionFaciebat
      @PygmalionFaciebat 11 лет назад

      ***** I never had a doubt, that you are a great traditional artist to :) And thanks for your answer. Your art is inspiring, and i looked a few one ... if you want to see few drawings from me - im also on deviant art ;) pygmalionfaciebat.deviantart.com/gallery ...I think the skills on digitalpainting will turn (with time) to the skill-level of drawing) - thats how sycra say. At the moment im on calibrating my monitor (i know its not necessary, but i want the perfect base) before i begin with digitalpainting. Krita i know from sycra already ...and he recommends it too. And i see, you use Krita too. So its 100% krita will be on my Laptop ;) ..Oh and sorry for my weak english - my native language is german. A lot to learn i have with brushes i think... but i think, i will handle it fast..im since 15 years on programs like gimp/photoshop - so its not very new to me... only to draw with it. Oh and for sure, i have already a quiet good graphic tablet i think for beginning (intuos pen and touch m ..the medium size is enough for me, because even on real drawing i drawed mostly "little pictures" 12 Inch * 8 Inch with tiny details often - so i rarely use my whole arm and shoulder for drawing).. Ok im curious what comes next from you (i have subscribed you ;) ).. Greets :)

    Your workflow is really interesting, different than most. What are the pros and cons of overlaying color on greyscale images?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  5 лет назад

      Hi, it comes from a technique named Grisaille used in painting since centuries; in short it split the number of decisions while painting: painting only values, it's easier to focus on the shape, the values at first and then overlay the color. The cons: it's sometime harder to predict color palette and it defintely not works well with colorful or cartoony style with area of flat colors.
