I just started using MyPaint a few months ago. It is now one of my most favorite programs. I love the simplicity of it. I've been looking for a program for a while that I can use to create natural paintings without getting lost in features and whatnot. MyPaint does just that. I don't use GIMP as much as I use to. I've never tried Kryta especially now that I'm happy with MyPaint. Your drawing is amazing. You make me proud to be a MyPaint user.
Hi, I use Krita now for my paintings ; but when I did that under Gimp I used to have a script mapped to Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V to have a proper copy/paste layer behavior and not the default 'floating' thing of Gimp. For the crop tool , in tool option you can activate the crop outside image borders ;)
Thanks for the feedback ! Be sure I still also struggle when I paint, and I also know moment of big frustration when I can't get a face or a hand in the right view angle or position. But those frustration and desire to solve them made my motivation to get more skill each time after time. ( ex: after a big frustration I force myself to draw a lot of hand , or face to try to solve the issue ) . i'm still fixing it :) A neverending quest maybe ... Good luck with your!
Thanks ArkaikDreamer, this is the fork of Gimp : Gimp-painter 2.6 ( discontinued, and hard to compile now on Linux) . I don't like to paint with Gimp 2.8 official now , and I stopped , but when I had to work on the production of Sintel it was -with early version of Mypaint- one of the rare solution able to do many things. Nowadays, I paint using a mix of Krita and Mypaint ( both open sources ) , you can see it in my recent videos.
Thanks! On all my videos on RUclips now I used a Intuos4 A5 . Since the start of this year 2013, I'm trying a Cintiq 21UX serie 1 ( an old model ). Next video I'll probably use the Cintiq with Krita.
Im in love with the way you color & shade & lightning.. God! i just wanna be like you one day! what an amazing talent you have thank love the music you chose.
Thanks for the nice comment. You have to start by doing "digital art" every day and then expose it if you have result you think worth sharing. If you practise till doing a very good quality (as you can see on 'market' ) , and expose in the right place. You'll attract works. But first, keep care of your skill, and artistic target. Good luck !
Yes, all software in FLOSS are doing great ; especially Krita and Mypaint on the digital painting side. For the music credit and author, you can read it at the start or at the end of the video. :)
'low on the radar' often mean low or inexsitant marketing budget , and hands on school teaching. I don't like Gimp 2.8 for painting. This video was about an old japanese fork named Gimp-painter 2.6 . Nowaday , I use Krita. Another open-source software to paint, and I find it good.
For Gimp-painter , I use the GPS pack who include Ramon Miranda brushes, and brushes of various other artist ( mine are also into it , from Chaos&Evolution DVD ). Especially the rake for the mixbrush tool. In Mypaint , I use the set#2 , I'm the author of this default brush kit too.
It's Gimp-painter 2.6. A fork of Gimp official with advanced digital painting tools , as mixbrush , G-pen , etc... Nowaday, I use Krita as a painting tools, and use Gimp ( version 2.8 ) as a image manipulation program only.
Thanks , all the program used into this video are free and open-source ( as Firefox, Wikipedia, Linux , etc... ) and you can download them on internet right today. Here is the list : Linux Mint ( system ) , Gimp , Mypaint. You can find the website on searching for them . Have a good painting time
Hi David, your work is so inspiring, the way you use brushes and drawn lines with confidence shows great skill. I can draw and paint but lack the self assurance with my sketching and drawing with my Wacom. Drawing is the only part of my workflow that isn't digital yet... you make me keep practicing :) thank you.
I used on this video a fork of Gimp named Gimp-painter 2.6 , then Mypaint. Both Open-source software , free , on Linux Mint . Nowaday ; I changed. (watch my more recent videos) ; I use Krita and Mypaint on Linux and no more a lot of Gimp exept for some filters. Most of the trick you see in my video can be reproduced in Photoshop too. The most important thing is to paint with your mind, tool is -really- secondary. Buying a software doesn't give to the owner really extra skill. :-)
Only FLOSS ( Free/Libre Open-Source) ; they are free to download and use professionaly. You can even modify, contribute, talk with the team, sell branding about...etc... very free. They run mainly on Linux witch is made of the same open-source license. On this video I used Gimp and Mypaint. Nowaday, I added another FLOSS tool to my possibilities : Krita.
No problem, it's in video at 0:00 as well as at 9:30 ; it's named 'Living Voyage" it's a creative commons attribution licensed song, made by Kevin Mc Leod. His website is w-w-w(dot)incompetech(dot)com .
inspirational mate, im in my 20's and left off art for the longest time, now that I've graduated I have a little more spare time, and would love to start taking this seriously. Thanks for the help mate :)
***** wow i just looked at the features page and it looks pretty nice. Do you know if it has any support for things basic animation, scripting/automation vector paths etc? couldn't find it on the Wikipedia comparison chart.
expiredninja Basic animation is on the way, look at the Krita kickstarter campaign to sponsor/crowdfund future development : www.kickstarter.com/projects/krita/krita-free-paint-app-lets-make-it-faster-than-phot
Detailing is quite a long job, more than 60% of the time is made for detailing only. With Mypaint the tool for color variation ( pop-up ) made color selections easier. Also , small brush in Mypaint are incredibly fast and precise. The preset selector with thumbnail is also a faster way to switch between brush. So, I move to Mypaint for an overall better ergonomy.
2 years ago when I posted this video, Gimp 2.6 was slow slow slow with hi-res even on a 3Ghz icore7 ; my only way to finish artwork and add a detail pass was to upscale in Gimp then pass it to another software with a more performant brush egine. Mypaint is really fast for this, and propose a good ergonomy to paint. Nowaday , I replaced this workflow with using Krita only.
I change to Mypaint at 4:23 , and yes my theme and way to organize palette is similar on both softwares. For the final image, I will see if I have it somewhere to post on my blog later. Thanks for your comment.
No Gimp is not as good as Photoshop, but can be used. On my case, it was my only choice, as I decided by personal idealism to use only Open-Source Software ( and a Linux System ). On Windows , I guess Gimp is also slower than Photoshop. If you look for performance, you might be interrested to purchase a copy of SAI Tools , or try the open source software Mypaint
Hey , thanks ! Not a dumb question. It is a technique. When your mind focus too long on a picture, brain tend to auto-correct the drawing ( even if it looks bad, you feel it looks good ). When flipping the image while drawing, you trick your brain ; this one believe watching a new image from scratch, and can't autocorrect on the top for 10 second. During this short time, you can see all your mistakes. This is cruel, but helps. In real-life, using a real mirror works too. I have one on my desk.
You know... its funny. I've been drawing faces, scenery and stuff like this for as long as i can remember. However, i've never been able to draw a full body. Not even an outline, I suck at them. It amazes me how fast you made the basic shape of a person within only a few minutes (in real time not time lapse) I envy you, but it does give me hope! Great video, keep it up!!
Yes, to ease speed-paintings ; don't zoom; watch the overall. Focus a first pass on the shapes ( with lines, or better 'cause faster; grey value zone or black&white painting ); use 'dirty' brushes to not be tempted to dive into detailing a part, really focus on the light, composition, shapes and the overall. When your b&w speedpainting is done, it's easy to paint color using layers blending modes, as overlay or color , and tweak contrast...color balance. Then adding details is possible. Goodluck
its just amazing what you can do, i love the expression on her face as well. i have to use gimp painter at work. needless to say, it aint no photoshop :) although i did see a krita folder. maybe i might need to look into this
Thank you, I'm developing my potential in digital painting and tried other software for digital painting ..!! Greetings before it \ m /....!! I wait for his next video from you. And I wanted to be your team ...!! GOOD WORK DAVID REVOY \m/

This is amazing! I'm trying my best to learn some of these programs, and I would love to know what you did at 1:58 to draw the grass pattern and then color it in. That effect amazed me several times haha.
I believe he used the "lasso" tool. You make a selection, but instead of just using the circle or rectangle selection, you get to draw your own outline and then it makes it easier to color in unusual shapes.
Oh, sorry. I didn't notice.. Saw a useful painting application for Linux with an attractive and functional UI and had to tell someone. ^_^ I've tried Krita as well. It looks really great, but my computer is somewhat old and Krita's still too slow for it to be quite useful to me. But it's great that it exists. Things are looking up for Linux in this area!
Hello david revoy!! her how to move objects and layer it without being moved?? and enlarge the canvas size using cut icon?? Her explanation please ... his thanks before :)
I started drawing everyday more seriously as teenager, and I'm past 30. But I'm slow to learn. Hello!! oh my god your work is AMAZING! I'm beginning to learn digital drawing myself and I was wondering if I could ask you for some advice ? First of all did you go to some art school or you became a professional just by practicing? the major problem I have is that I usually reach a point in my drawing where I feel I did such a good job that i'm afraid to screw it up if I continue, even though it rarely happens). So I end up procrastinating out of fear of failure! Any advice? Thanks!
Hi! i love your videos. I really wanted to get into digital painting, and i'm somewhat of a beginner. What tablet do you suggest i get? What do i need (will a $100 bamboo be sufficient?)
Woah, woah, woah! Have you seen MyPaint? Even after 2.8, I'm pretty unsatisfied with GIMPs design and I've been looking for alternatives. I was actually hesitant to look at it because I associate the word "paint" with MSPaint. But I've heard it compared to Corel Painter? Don't have any experience with that peice of software, but MyPaint is looking *very* nice.
> " no 'have to buy' ; thats not my personnal policy and ethic with knowledge. I'm selling no tutorial under a proprietary license. They all are on RUclips , torrent, online or direct download , even my 2 DVDs. Legally. :-) thx for the encouragement to continue.
You probably mean by PC -> a PC with Windows OS ( Vista/Seven/ 8 ) , and by MAC , a PC branded by Apple with a Apple OS. The answer is yes ; Linux ( an OS, Operating system ) can be installed on any computer hardware ; so I can install them on it. Try a live CD of Linux Mint :-) Gimp-painter now is hard to get, actual development don't have stable release, and the version I use in this video is old. Nowaday I use Krita, a better painting apps, I'll publish video about it.
I learned my basic of drawing on paper, yes. It's easier to get skill on paper for me. Tablet are frustrating , sure ( even the Cintiq I have is frustrating ). It takes a long time to get used to a tablet, and long hours of drawing.
Was getting wacom Intuos4 drivers to work with gimp difficult? I have been using Photoshop elements, but this looks like a far more capable program. Another option I have been toying with is getting Corel Painter, after I save up for it.
Probably not anymore; I think the video was recorded and published 10 years ago. I archived and reduced my working folder since this time (and my house and all my backup where stolen in 2017 ; so before this date, I often only have the very minimum zip around). But have you tried the feature of RUclips to slow down the playback? it's in the bottom right of the video. Also, this video used a particular version of Gimp; a Japanese fork at that time named Gimp-Painter with an extra tool and the GPS (Gimp Paint Studio) resources. Back in that time , no ready-made solution were around to paint on Linux. Nowaday, a solution like Krita comes with everything (I switched fully to it back in 2012).
@@DavidRevoy oh so sorry to hear about the breaking into your house. I usually save my files encrypted into the cloud. Yes, I tried the slowing down feature on youtube, but the video is so fast, that it is showed in steps. Just want to capture some techniques from the video. so it is more about the digital painting principles and techniques and less about Krita :). Thanks, David for your answer :)
I feel like I've seen every drawing video these is on RUclips... I'm never disappointed when I see new videos like these.
Amazing job!

Simply brilliant and just goes to show how much you can do. Gives me an idea for a next video. lol

You can saw the music credit, at start or end of the video.
"Mypaint" is an open-source software of digital painting for Linux. Google it :)
A port for Windows system exist also.
Totally amazing! Has me wishing I could draw something like that!
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it! :)

Badzombie, thats the beauty of digital art, you dont have to worry about that. Save it, rewrite it, resave it.
Amazing. I wish I could do amazing work like this. I bet it'd take years to do something like this!
Gimp have the best screen rendering at any zoom from all the software I know ; but you'll see pixel ( normal ) if you cross 100%
Yes, to ease speed-paintings ; don't zoom; watch the overall. He uses a tablet Wacom Cintiq Pro 13
Awesome Drawing! I wish I can draw like this :(
Very nice work. I'm extremely impressed, especially by your colour palette.
One question, though; What makes you prefer MyPaint over GIMP for doing the finer/facial details?
Wow beautiful! I love it.
Great art , truly amazing
No, it was Gimp-painter 2.6 ; a fork of the Gimp official development. But nowaday I use Krita almost full time.
This is amazing! I'm trying my best to learn some of these programs, and I would love to know what you did at 1:58 to draw the grass pattern and then color it in. That effect amazed me several times haha.

i can do the same with sketchbook mobile on my note2 what i can do with cs 6.. so ur right :) but photoshop is nice to work fast.
I learned my basic of drawing on paper, yes. It's easier to get skill on paper for me. Tablet are frustrating , sure ( even the Cintiq I have is frustrating ). It takes a long time to get used to a tablet, and long hours of drawing.
I love watching other people pain, it's inspiring :D I like your other work too
Props for being able to use GIMP dude. Personally from experience, GIMP is a hard program to work with xP
I hate everything about GIMP...
Pure awesomness! Keep up with good work :)
Was getting wacom Intuos4 drivers to work with gimp difficult? I have been using Photoshop elements, but this looks like a far more capable program. Another option I have been toying with is getting Corel Painter, after I save up for it.
you have a great pallet!
Is Gimp good for painting and art? It's pretty low on the radar for that type of thing.
Do you have a slower version of this?
What version of gimp painter is???
I love it's interface!
hey, that was the 2.6 running on Linux Mint of 2011.
