okay, I rarely comment but I gotta vent about Goodrow. I watch every Rangers game. Dude is an absolute horse. He played 80 games this season but what that number doesnt tell you is he played about 20 of those games with his JAW WIRED SHUT. He broke his jaw, missed a game, came back in a bubble, and played the rest of the season. And people were wondering why he wasn't producing while he's on an all liquid diet. Absolute swiss army knife for his entire tenure as a Ranger. Center gets hurt? Slot in Goody. RIght wing gets hurt? Slot in Goody. Gives up the body on every PK. Can't say enough about him as a player and a competitor. I like having the cap space and I trust Drury to make some good moves, but for his time as a Ranger, he was worth every last penny.
As a Sharks fan I always loved the guy, very happy to have him back. The cap space isn't a problem for us, we're 10 mil under the floor, his contract end when Smith and Celebrini's ELC ends. His game 7 OT goal will always be loved among Sharks fans.
@@85blutch Too bad he DOESNT WANT TO BE THERE AND WILL IMMEDIATELY ASK FOR A TRADE. To me this is a scummy move but smart. If the NHLPA is smart they might want to adress this in the next negoations of u cant waive a player to get around his no trade clause.
Well said. If Goodrow's salary was under $2.5 mil, no one would be complaining about his offensive output. He's an elite bottom 6 forward and defensively sound.
Great show, as usual. This weekend in Finland we celebrate midsummer and it is mostly absurd that the NHL final starts after 3am our time and the sun rises at 3.55am and I'm watching hockey while enjoying sunrise
I don’t think any Rangers fan is taking too much stock in Goodrow’s playoff run. Guy has been invisible for basically the rest of his tenure here, opens up cap space, and gives an opportunity for some of the younger guys to get in the lineup
Exactly. He had a couple good games in the playoffs this year but they were a fluke compared to his overall tenure with the Rangers. Even before this playoff, there was this narrative that we needed him because he was a Playoff Performer™ despite the fact he had never performed in the playoffs either. I get keeping guys around for “vetchrin presents” but you can’t spend Goodrow’s cap hit on a guy like that.
From my understanding about why the season is starting later is because of ESPN. ESPN is making the league wait to start until after ESPN's coverage of the MLB Wild Card series are over since ESPN has the rights to a fair amount of those games
That’s right. It’s got nothing to do with preseason. The US TV companies want to avoid MLB playoffs and minimize the overlap with football. The NBA is cramming in more games in a week than the NHL, but we don’t hear NHL players skipping games for “load management.”
But thats on the NHL not negotiable enough to stop acting like the little guy Cut the preseason and make those TV slots because some do get televised and make them regular game starts
Jesus H, stop running betterhelp ads. They have been selling customer's private health information to advertisers and have done it so much that the FTC is investigating, do better.
Love how they talk about giving homage to how many championships the team has on their jersey, after they crap on the Oil slick jersey designed by Macfarlane that has 5 veins on the sprocket to signify the 5 Stanley cup wins.
I know it doesn't matter and the guys aren't gonna see this, but the new Kings logo didn't leak with the PLD thank you tribute. That was still the old logo. It just was coloured differently so people assumed it was the new one, the Kings even clarified themselves it was still the old one.
The NHL Finals used to be done by the first couple days of June and that felt too late. What is currently happening with the schedule is insane for a winter sport, as well as messing up GMs going into the entry draft and free agency. Start the season on October 1st and have a lot less exhibition games.
The discussion around Goodrow shows why eye test vs analytics are important. Yes, Goodrow produced well in the playoffs. But he shot 40% and got caved in pretty much every game. Even with him shooting 40% the Rangers were still outscored in his minutes. Seeing a guy score on a few chances seems to really cover up the glaring issues in his game. Like Jesse said you can’t bank on Goodrow doing that again next year. Edit: Steve continues and sites Goodrow’s playoff game total as a reason for why he’s worth his contract. The Sharks, Lightning and Rangers were good cuz of their star players, not because of Goodrow. We see this all the time with bottom6 guys on teams that go far in the playoffs. They are role players who hit a sh% bender and suddenly their “playoff performers”. There are a dozen+ guys who could’ve filled the role of Goodrow this year (and previous years) but they didn’t have the benefit of playing on a great team. This is how you end up with Roussel and Beagle contracts.
Jessie, regards to the Ohio State helmet stickers. They are not stars, they are Buckeyes. And they are given those stickers for good plays, not to represent Championships.
I genuinely can't believe how close Steve got this group to finding out that the two trades they were ripping on are actually, on average, pretty close in value according to the draft pick value calc... Of course Adam had to keep the podcast away from due diligence - can't have that
Just to comment on Cossa as a person who has watched him live he is really good. He helped the Oil Kings to a championship and even though his numbers aren’t other worlds I bet he plays at least 500 games in the NHL.
I'd like to see a limit that teams have to meet. Maybe 4 No Move clauses and a total of 10 with some sort of trade protection. (I found a bunch of teams with 5 NMC, only found Edmonton with 6)
I feel like this waiver move is going to end up biting teams in the ass. If players lose faith in the value of a NTC, they're going to expect to make up that compensation in terms of salary. I wouldn't be shock to see player be less enthused about taking team friendly contracts with NTCs attached to them.
14:30 I feel like the same thing happened with Vancouver and Boudreau. If they were terrible this year with Tocchet people would still be talking about how they embarrassed Boudreau last year but since they had a good season and improved everybody is applauding the management with Allvin being second in GM of the year voting
With Boston’s parade extravaganza they lost 5 championship series as well(bruins 2011/2019, and 3 patriots defeats) during that time frame. That number could have been way bigger.
Do you think the Leafs' "injury prone goalie" situation could be connected to the fitness staff? I know they're good, but doesn't anyone know how to prevent goalies from snapping a ligament every time they overextend a leg?
Steve you are right. I am a Kings fan who has lived in Sharks territory since 2010 and the current Sharks team is historically terrible. But in 2016 they made the Stanley Cup finals, and in recent history they have won far more rounds than your beloved Leafs. And with Smith and Cellibrini, good goalies, and a few more years of top picks their chances of a cup run is better than the Leafs, especially when they resign Mitch
There's no hidden bad contract team's like Arizona and Columbus ... New owners and New/Old GM.... Gary's Bettman little circle of excellence award.....😂
To explain Yzermans philosphy in regards to the Cossa Pick trade, essentially he had a billion picks(like 2 firsts and 3 seconds and 3 Thirds approx) and already had his farm system stocked from previous drafts. He essentially sacrificed some value to go get his guy for however flawed you think that logic is.
Watching Steve die inside hearing Boston's longest championship drought Also super happy for the two year olds who haven't experienced a Boston championship 🎉
Did they really not talk about the PLD Kuemper trade in this episode? I’m shocked if so lol I hope they do more than just the instant analysis video on it
I don't understand why you would be upset that the season is "too long". More hockey is always preferred to less hockey. I almost wonder if Steve, Adam, and Jesse are only complaining because they are sick of working. I don't care if it's hot outside, that doesn't change how much I want to watch hockey.
I think the point people are missing in the Goodrow situation is circumventing a guy's no trade clause is not acting in good faith and you can't be surprised when the players' association looks at this next time they sit down at the bargaining table. So, sure this is good from the NYR point of view, but if/when it has repercussions that impact everyone else, the other GMs won't be happy.
Why does regular season production not matter for some, matter for others same with playoff production... Goodrow wasn't good in the playoffs he was just lucky, he's no where near worth the money and nobody is paying 3.6M for experience. + Guys without trade protection go places they don't want to be all the time.
I don't understand all these people expecting Goodrow to be a whiny, petulant child who stomps his feet and crosses his arms and says "I don't wanna so I'm not gonna!" He has never been that kind of player.
The Problem with Edmonton is I think the first 3 they werent going high so coudlnt score then started going high and in g4 scored 8 and in five and six scored five each. They've figured out how to beat Bob and thats go high.
here's the twist -> Goodrow (Toronto/Aurora guy) + Ferraro (Toronto boy) = Leafs trade -> Tavares (Toronto kid)????? Doug Wilson (DW) talked to JT about signing in San Jose before signing in Toronto... i also see this as a play for San Jose to attempt to attract more veterans (Stammer?!!!) in this offseason, Barcs scored the biggest goal in SJS history.... but fair he has "moved on" (so possibly they ship him to Toronto/hometown at the deadline, or something like that) I know many fans are excited (as am I) about this grab off waivers.....agree 1,000% with Jessie -> Leafs/Treliving are in on EVERYTHING
No surprise I’m weighing in on a CGY-Leafs take again. Their may have been some owner interference on the Zadorov aspect though I’m not sold on that. I think when it comes to Tanev and Markstrom it just came down to the Flames accepting what they felt was the best offer. If you look at what the Leafs gave up for their deadline acquisitions, and Brads trade history, it seems clear that Brad was unwilling to meet the price the Flames got for either. He loves his role player trades but that’s about it unless he’s forced to do it.
If Barclay isnt happy, then he should not have woefully underperformed his contract. No one should be paying 3.6 million for a 4th liner who scores only 4 goals in 80 games in the regular season. Sorry Steve, no one is "up in arms" over waiving an overpaid underperforming millionaire.
NBA players also conduct the dreaded load management. A top player ends up playing, maybe, 55-65 games and so you can accelerate the season. There are dead stretches of games due to marquee players out of the lineup and not many people caring about the NBA regular season anyway.
With potentially Cowen, Mitten, Knies and Robertson filling some holes. I think a concentration on defence and goal will strengthen this team. Even if Marner was to go it isn't going to fill every need BUT next year we will be in much better shape to chisel out this team. Would be nice to keep Domi but not for over 4 million.
To win a STANLEY CUP the Leafs need a true, #1 stud defenceman, preferably right-handed. They need to sign two more good R-D. They need a lot of playing time together with better defensive team coaching. They need better and more inventive special teams system. They need to fill 6 forward spots. This will require at least two years of really intelligent team building ( no Shanahan ).
I know that legally the NHLPA doesn’t have much ground to stand on here, but this is HORRIBLE from the players POV. Imagine if you’re about to get bought out, you’re still getting the money from a previous team, now I can sign for a contender and get paid by TWO teams. Now not only is that gone, but I’m on the worst team in the NHL.
Did you miss the most obvious option? They claimed Goodrow so they can flip him for another 1st for him half retained come playoffs. Who wouldn't want him at half retention?
With the pick the Wings got Cossa, that was their second first round pick, they picked Edvinsson 6th over all. Jesse is terrible at building through the draft so I'll trust Yzerman over him.
22:30 Sharks can't retain on Goodrow. Their retention spots are filled up with Burns, Karlsson & Hertl. They could get a third team in on it, but they'd probably have to pay and not the receiving team
Yes, but it didn’t used to be that way, so it’s something to discuss, I guess. The issue is that it seems like it would make way more sense to start the season October 1 or earlier. But ESPN wants it to start after the first round of the MLB playoffs and US-based teams want to start as late as possible to avoid competing for attention with baseball and football. But two weeks isn’t going to matter much either way.

You know a guy that would really help San Jose meet the cap floor?
Mitch Marner
Marner in exchange for the whole Sharks team. That would be a fair trade.
Don't want this loser anywhere near our young guys.
That would be perfect for mitch as he wouldn't have to play playoff games avs can go to baseball

Rangers did this to clear more cap space to give shesterkin a massive extension. They also need to extend laffy next year
If the sens did that to Goodrow it would cost them 7 first round picks
It's bad for the league cause it's going to kill waivers to, and it's clear tampering

100% correct. Rangers cap situation is too tight to pay a 4th liner who is over 30, slow and doesn't score 3.6 million a year.

Exactly. The fact is that the 82 games in the regular season swings far more weight than the playoffs.
What about the Raptors?? They had a parade.

22:30 Sharks can't retain on Goodrow. Their retention spots are filled up with Burns, Karlsson & Hertl. They could get a third team in on it, but they'd probably have to pay and not the receiving team
I liked Goodrow, and it sucks how they did him dirty. I am wondering if they needed to do that to have room to really give shesty a good deal to stay.
I just think it's weird that we are now talking about the nhl ending after the nba. Isn't that how it's been for at least a few seasons?
Yes, but it didn’t used to be that way, so it’s something to discuss, I guess.
The issue is that it seems like it would make way more sense to start the season October 1 or earlier.
But ESPN wants it to start after the first round of the MLB playoffs and US-based teams want to start as late as possible to avoid competing for attention with baseball and football.
But two weeks isn’t going to matter much either way.
@@RJM1693 yea start it earlier im all for that. I was just worried I had some false memories lol 😆
