    Hi, can you please explain what audio cables I need to hook up a MacBook Pro (I can go pc laptop if I have to) to the Zoom Livetrack L-8 to do a Zoom call. Like do a complete video explaining where on the mixer to plug in each cable and to where on the computer to plug them in. Then how to set up the mixer for a Zoom caller & phone caller. I have one Co host in Texas who will be on the phone. Then need to record my guest on Zoom via mix minus. I’m a brand new to podcasting & mixing boards! Please help!!!

      I think it would be best to follow the instructions on the zoom l-8 for how to plug it into the Mac. It is just a micro USB cable that was supplied with the mixer.
      That is all you need for zoom

      @@CastawayStudios At minute mark 5:17 can you please tell me where the white cable at the top right corner of the mixing board is being plugged into? What type of cable is the white cable? I'm a newbie to mixing boards and the Zoom L-8. I need help with this so I can do a Zoom caller on my podcast! Thank you

      @@adventuresinbecomingyou3284 Hi. That cable is a standard TRS stereo cable (with a 1/4Inch adaptor) and takes the mix minus channel (what you want the guest to hear) and goes into the mic input of the PC. Then select the onboard soundcard as the Microphone source for the comms software. NOTE: Zoom will work via USB as it does the MIx Minus automatically. I use the system in this video for when I use zencastr etc.

      Castaway Studios If I’m using Zoom Video chat on my computer (MAC book pro) I just need to plug the mixer into my computer with the usb cord. Then record Zoom call on input line 7. My remote host via TRS cable and cellphone on input line 8, and record them. No mix minus set up need then for a Zoom video chat caller? Is that what you are saying? (If not, can you email me at adventuresinbecomingyou@gmail.com)

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  4 года назад +1

      Correct. In your model (and mine) there are two mix-minus in effect. Zoom does one for you (usb) and the TRRS cable does the job of filtering your hosts voice from going back to them.
      The extra cabling is when a software package does not do a mix minus automatically (like Zencastr etc. )

    Great video as are all your videos on this series. Quick question, and yes I'm new to this, using the L8 are you able to mix minus a second cel phone, or more, into the recording? Pls keep up the great work!

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  3 года назад +1

      Yes you can! the Livetrack series have several programmable headphone out ports for mix minus. You will have to get a splitter for the trrs signal and send the mic from the phone into a track and the headphone out port back to teh phone (with that track removed from the mix)

    What I’m seeing is that, although very cool, the ZOOM L-8 is not really a podcast board capable of doing mix-minus via a mobile phone, plus mix-minus via ZOOM / SKYPE, plus having any sound pads ... all simultaneously.

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  3 года назад

      yep I do it all the time. I'll make a new video soon. you can use voicemeeter or Vmix etc to send a mix minus to zoom as an input.

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад +1

      The skype is clear as day directly using usb in and out. The horrible audio on this test was a bad series of extension cables and adaptors.

      @@CastawayStudios Good to hear. Sometimes my Skype calls depend on how good my wifi or data coverage is too! If I have full bars or am plugged in directly it's clear as a bell, but if I'm on the road or in a corner of my house that the wifi doesn't quite reach to it can be noisy and glitchy!

    Useful tutorial! My challenge is still being able to play audio from my PC as well as have live guests on a steam. Currently not possible without the ability for a true mix minus of the USB. I guess a mixer with multiple outputs via USB would do this? I’ll keep trying until I find a way! 😄

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад +1

      I have been looking into voicemeeter banana but will need to find time to get my head around it and see if it helps.
      It is hard to mess with the computer setting when you have an active studio as one conflict or crash and you lose bookings (and face).

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic 5 лет назад

      I can imagine! I’ll keep digging and testing. It’s challenging because I want everything I’m sending including the USB audio to go to the stream, but I don’t want the guests’ audio going back in. I think I need to tweak my mix so that I hear them but it doesn’t go to the stream... however then I lose the USB audio for music. 🤔

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад

      What if you do the old irig 2 trick and use the trrs connection at the computer end to supply audio in and out for the Skype. Set up the audio source as a mix minus. And add the guests voice as an analogue input.

    Having issues with the Smartphone integration through the board ...
    Using the included TRRS cable with the LiveTrack L-8 and using a LG V60 I get extremely distorted audio return unless I turn the PAN fully Left or fully Right.
    I first tried listening to a phone call and I could barely hear the voice on the other end. So as a test, I played an album on the smartphone and tested the audio I would hear. Leaving the PAN in the center at 0 I could hear very distrorted audio.
    Let's just say I stopped troubleshooting to take a laugh break because I can Hear the recorded ad-libs over song that was playing.
    After playing with the levels, I observed adjusting the PAN knob would "normalize" the audio to a degree. When it comes to music I would get a full audio sound and hear the low registers (Bass) when fully Left, and when fully Right I would get the mid registers (rhythm guitar).
    What is cause and solution for successful call integration or do I have a OBF board/cable?

    I have run into an issue and I am not sure how to get it right. Everything was good between Skype on my laptop and a phone call through the trrs on Track 8. Both parties could hear each other and hear me. But when I brought someone in on Skype via their laptop (Mac) they could hear the person on the phone but the person on the phone couldn't here them on Skype. They both could hear me. Would that have to do with me not sending my mic out from my laptop to the mixer board into the Mix C output or would it have to do with how the mic is setup on the internal settings the person's Mac? I can record all channels.

      Pretty sure the audio from Skype was bad because Tara was standing in a bin with an old banged up iPhone on speakerphone. I’ll do another test.

    I've been having issues with this. With my Livetrak L-8 and the TRRS cable seem to only work sometimes. That I have a microphone hooked up, but when attempting to do remote calls, it will only sometimes pick up my microphone, and I have to end up talking directly into the phone for them to hear me. But sometimes it works perfectly fine. I talk into my microphone, and they can hear me through that with no issues.

  • @LorenzMichels

    Just wondering...would it be possible to add two extra microphones (apart from the normal microphone inputs) using the Rode SC6-L Kit. This has two lavelier mics. If you the put the included trrs cable to the headphone output of the SC6-L splitter would you then have two extra microphne inputs?

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  4 года назад

      you could do that, or use the 1/4 inch inputs for channels 7 and 8 (but you lose the usb input, trrs and soundpads.

    Hello,
    Do you intend to make a video explaining the effects of voice processing on the L8? It would be very interesting to see how it fares compared to the Rode Podecaster Pro.

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад +1

      Yes definitely. I generally consider the “one setting” vocal Fx as they stand on the rodecaster to be unique. I have never used them as they probably go better with the original concept of the unit (one take, ready to publish right away)
      Once again it is a feature that will suit some people, and those people will also be attracted to the rodecaster pro for many other reasons also.

      @@CastawayStudios One question I have is whether these effects match those of the DBX 286S. It would be great to have real time voice handling for 4/6 microphones in one device. Are the noise gate of Rodecaster Pro and L8 as efficient as those of DBX 286s? Thanks so much for the videos and for your attention. I have enjoyed your channel.

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад +1

      both boards use a single setting for their noise gate/ hi-pass/ lowcut, so no, they do not compare to the DBX

    • @CastawayStudios
      @CastawayStudios  5 лет назад

      the original rodecaster noisegate was not useable for me as it would cut someone out if they went off mic a bit, looked away art a script etc. I'll check if recent firmware updates have fixed this or made it adjustable. The good thing about the L-8 Low-cut is that it is right there , lit up so you can easily switch it on and off while recording.

      Yes, technically You could do four phone calls (or any combo of analogue communication).
      One through the trrs, and three others through old fashioned mix minus, utilising the mappable mix outputs in monitor outputs A, B and C

    • @CastawayStudios

      You’d need a trrs splutter for each (like an irig) to separate the phones microphone from the phones headphones on EACH of these channels.

    • @CastawayStudios

      All computers have a minijack in for a mic. Usually a trrs that combines microphone and audio out.

      It is a decision based on any future uses and your expendable income I guess.
