Awesome Video SJ! You just saved me from returning my LiveTrak L-8 to the dealer. I was just about ready to throw in the towel - then, I saw your video tutorial. My goal was to connect the L-8 to my AKAI MPC One. The MPC One will only work with an audio interface, if the Audio Interface supports 44.1K sample rate + Class Compliant Recording (CC) via USB. Some people have referred to Class Compliant Recording as "Linux Mode" - meaning that "no specialized drivers are required" - just connect USB cables and the device is automatically recognized. So - after seeing your video - where you went to Audio Interface Mode / Settings - and it says "PC/Mac" and "iOS" - I chose "iOS" and voila' - it worked!! Now - all of my audio is working via USB between the 2 devices. This also reminds me that iOS Mode is the same thing as Class Compliant Mode. I have a Steinberg UR44 Audio Interface from 2014. The UR44 has a hardware switch on the rear that says "Class Compliant ON/OFF". I remember watching a video demo from Sweetwater where Mitch Gallagher uses the UR44 with his Apple iPad. To make it work properly, he set the UR44 to Class Compliant Mode (iOS Mode).
I'm currently considering buying the L-8 atm and use it together with Audition on Windows 10. Seems easy and stable enough. So your video really helped me making up my mind. Thanks a lot!
SUPER HELPFUL. I've been searching for the 'how to' multitrack record on Audition, and there's just nothing out there (which I could find) which connected the dots like this one does. One extra note is, following your steps, my Audition didn't give me all the input options. I'm not sure exactly what I did to get them to show up eventually, but suspect it was simply exiting and restarting Audition which eventually made them all appear where I expected.
Steve... Please consider a little tutorial on how to use that tiny screen to find previous recordings and play them back. In going through the manual, I am certain you would make that much clearer! :) Thanks for what you're doing!
2:45 so you can't use the L-8 as a dedicated interface? I connect mine through USB and the master headphone output only outputs the sounds within the L-8 (if that makes sense) but not the system sounds from the pc.
@@sjknows First, this tutorial is nicely done. I recently picked up the L-8 and find it quite comprehensive as a *very* affordable mixer/interface/recorder. When you say "You can return the audio from the PC," you are referring only to audio coming from the Adobe Audition DAW program only, and NOT the other audio from the PC, if I am reading you correctly. I haven't been able to bring other PC audio, like RUclips audio from the PC, into the L-8 even after changing Playback devices in Windows Audio Devices. Please let me know if you've found this possible, and if so where I might find out how to correctly do this. All your efforts are much appreciated.

One issue I have been having with mine, is using it as an audio interface when I am doing a live stream with other people who I hear on my computer. I hear myself and anything plugged into the L-8, but sounds from the computer I do not hear. So I tend to have to plug in my Focusrite Scarlett to hear the computer sounds and guests. In audio interface I can't get any playback through the master output. Am I making a mistake? Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
I've downloaded the drivers and followed the prompts on the L-8. Inside of System Settings (on the MAC) the L-8 still is not showing up as an option for audio. Is this typical for this device? Are you able to give some pointers about this? Thank you either way!
I have never connected it to a Mac, but it should show up in the application (garage band, audacity, etc) - not in system settings. Make sure you put it into Audio IF mode or it won't show up at all. Hope that helps!
New potential user here. I have read the manual but I am still not clear about a certain aspect of the L8. Is it possible to use it as follows: - reading from a card: 3 mono tracks or 1 stereo track, 1 mono track (WAV samples + mono click) sending the stereo/2 mono WAV tracks to the MASTER out and sending all 3 signals to one of the MONITOR outs? WHat about file names saved on the SD Card? How many characters can they be long? Only 14, or more?
This device is pretty focused around a typical podcast environment, I'd look at some other Zoom (or other) products for more complex routing / interfaces as it looks like you are wanting something more sophisticated.
What about monitor outputs? Do you have to unplug the monitor outputs if you want to hear strictly from the headphones? Seems like there should have been a dedicated volume for the master monitor output.
The monitor outputs all work independently, or can be assigned the main mix. Since this is a video about the audio interface, I'm not sure if I am understanding your question.
@@sjknows I'm testing one out and seems like if you connect a pair of monitor speakers to it the only way to turn up or down the volume is to use the Master slider. So if I wanted to switch to using my headphones, there doesn't appear to be an independent volume knob for the speakers to turn down without affecting the Master Slider. The volume knob on the Master section is only for the headphones. Looks like I have to unplug the Cables from the Outputs to hear the mix in my headphones.
It may be a week or so before I can do such a video, but they are very simple. If you have not downloaded the L8 user guide from zoom, do so. It is one of the better explained things in the guide as I recall.
Thank you very much for your valuable info on the L8. I just bought it and intend to use it for my band performance for Live streaming thru Zoom meeting Apps. Most people say that to have good audio quality coming out from Zoom meetings, I have to use another software known as Voice Meeter or some other virtual router with a virtual cable to link to Zoom meetings App so that audio coming out from Zoom meetings will be in good audio quality and in stereo. I'm using Windows 10 and my band setup is one keyboardist player and 3 singers. Please advise. Thank you.
Steve, after watching your sharing I bought l8.just a little problem struggle me for a long time, when I connect it to pc how I can use usb 3/4 on channel 8 instead of usb 1/2 on channel 7? If it can’t,what does usb 3/4 use for?

So l can plug in the Alesis sr18 drum machine in and hear it without PC on. Now would all l need to do is plug the left and right audio speaker cables out from the monitors so as to hear the sound with out pc and then when l have pc on, change over the output driver to Zoom audio interface correct?
At marker 5 ;26 you said you hit a record button and it started to record. did not see the curser move or you touch the L-8. where is the record button. I have the green light on in Audition, but left to right recording is not showing. Please advise.
Great vid. It was instrumental in making my purchase of the L-8 as 8 track audio interface with WIN 10 PC with use of Audition. Everything works as expected. Without Audition open, PC audio comes out of L-8 input 7/USB1-2 as expected and audio, like RUclips, is returned from PC. Does anyone know if it is possible to change PC settings (NOT Audition) so that PC audio is sent to L-8 Input 8 channel and will also come out of that channel instead of USB 3-4 signals? Thanks again for any and all solutions.
Thanks for the help. It wound up that the in (View) show Editor panel controls were not on so i had no bottom record button. Next issue is I reset the default and all is good, except in the play back i'm trying to listen to the track. The output is set to Master. I picked up an adapter 1/4 to 3.5 to hook up headphone . Where do I put it I have tried everything ( i believe) and no good. Please share your wisdom. Thanks
It depends on where you have assigned the output. If you are using Audition and you want the output to go to the L8, you have to set the output to the Zoom L8 setting, these will then play on the tracks 7/8 when set to USB mode, then you should hear them on the L8
Hi, thanks for the video! I saw at 7:40 that you have engaged both the phone input on channel 8 and the USB input on channel 7 and they both lit up properly (were not flashing). Does this mean that you can use both USB (Ch7) and phone trrs input (Ch8) at the same time? (The manual says that if you are using the phone trrs input on channel 8, it will disable the LINE-input on channel 7 and its LED would flash, but it does NOT say whether or not the USB input works in parallel to the phone input. Certainly the soundpads on ch7 work with the phone being used on ch8, but there’s no info on the USB input). Thanks!
@@supercubdude I’ve just found it out: it does work. :) It’s just the line input that’s disabled, the USB and the soundpads both work fine while a phone is plugged into ch8. However, if you want to use it like I was planning to, which is to have a remote guest through the trrs input and another remote guest through USB, it is very tricky to set up a mix-minus. For the USB-guest, you can turn down the ch7 fader, so that the audio that’s going back through USB (the Master track) will not contain the audio coming from the computer through USB (the guest’s voice) You could still hear & monitor what the guest says however as you can set up a custom mix ie on Mix A to include the USB audio from ch7 and it’ll work, but there’s a big drawback: if you would also be calling someone using the trrs-input and the auto mix-minus, the audio which is going back to the phone guest through the trrs will also not include the USB- audio (as the trrs channel also routes back the master track to the phone, just without the phone audio itself). So, it is, as far as I can tell, not possible to have a caller on trrs and on USB at the same time. (Although, you can use the traditional mix-minus method using an iRig2 and another phone and with that you can actually achieve this, thanks to the custom monitor mix capability)

Id there a way to just have audio playback happen through computer speakers and this setup?
You have to go into audio hardware under preferences and change the default output to your computer when the Livetrak is plugged in. That should do it.
@@sjknows I don't see any way to do this when using ASIO drivers. If you've figured out a way to hear on the PC speakers what you're inputting from the L-8, I'd definitely love to know how. Sure, it records great, but I seem have no way to hear what I'm recording.

is there a way to cue music on this unit? For example, let say that I am playing a cd track on channel 2 but want to cue a record on channel 3 but don't want the sound to play on the master.
Can you please tell me, that via the Master Headphone monitor out, will the host listen to his / her voice also? Aad if they don't want to hear that, can the master out be configured for that option?
Operating from memory, that is how it works. Tracks are recorded with out effects and unless you do a mixdown, you won't hear them. It takes a while to understand all these nuances, but once you do it is pretty simple.
Hi, can I record 8 tracks at a time? Using channel 7 and 8 as individual mono inputs. As an example, connecting two guitars in inputs 7 and 8 and six microphones on inputs 1 to 6. I read somewhere you could only use inputs 1to 6 for multitrack recording… thanks
I think you would want one of the other zoom devices for this kind of setup. This is really more focused at Podcasting. They have a whole line of mutli-track devices that use the same brains.
Hooter Bear Yes, it works as an audio recorder and works “standalone” for recording any audio or music. If you are recording music and dont want a laptop you should also consider the Tascam Model 12/16/24 series. They are baddass!!! And the model 12 also works well for podcasting and midi sequence recording.
We have an L-8 and I didn't know any of this capability. Instead of Adobe Audition we use vMix. It doesn't show the squiggly lines of the recording but it works much the same as Audition. I suspect we could use the input 7 or 8 and plug earphones into one of the earphone jacks and hear what is being recorded. Can this also play back what is recorded to confirm quality of the recording?
Have you tried this with Win11 yet? For the life of me I can't get it to work. I loaded drivers, set the interface, plugged in and Ableton Live still says L-8 ASIO driver not working
I have not. I actually have not used this device in about a year - probably need to sell it! I would think that Zoom would have something on their website about Win 11 - but I have not looked. I only have one computer with Win 11, and I am not a huge fan...
I tried to record audio last night and it’s not recording to the SD card. I can tell it’s detecting sound based on the gain but nothing is getting recorded. Can you please help me troubleshoot?

I have a question about LiveTrack-L8 machine that I'm thinking about purchasing... How do you get it to playback the track through the USB connection to the computer after you record the track in Audtion, what good is it to record it if you have to change back and forth to hear it? IS there a way? No matter what I set the out on the track to or what button I push on the zoom it doesn't play the recorded sound what am I Missing? I want to edit it in Adobe not the recorder So wait I can edit it in adobe but the playback mechanism has to be Zoom ? Is that it not the computer
BeatTheCasino if I understand your question correctly, to play back audition to the computer speakers or headphone, you need to make sure the output device is set to the computer not to the L8, or if you want to listen on the L8, you need to make sure that USB is selected on track 7 and 8 on the L8 as these are the usb channels the playback will come to.
I set up the system just like you did. My issue is when I hit record in Audtion I am hearing static when I am stop speaking for about .5 seconds while I go silent then the mic stops picking up any ambient sound and cuts off. Please help

Joe, thanks for this. While I have not experienced this problem, I have maintained all along that if you are simply looking for an audio interface to mac/windows, there are much better choices out there. The goal of the L8 was to be a stand alone podcast device to make it easier for newbies (and not so newbies) to do a show with one piece of equipment. Hello sir. I can't heat it
SUCH a useful video, dude. Thank you very much!
i cannot choose mono, track is not appear. can you help me.?
I've downloaded the drivers and followed the prompts on the L-8. Inside of System Settings (on the MAC) the L-8 still is not showing up as an option for audio. Is this typical for this device? Are you able to give some pointers about this? Thank you either way!
I have never connected it to a Mac, but it should show up in the application (garage band, audacity, etc) - not in system settings. Make sure you put it into Audio IF mode or it won't show up at all. Hope that helps!
Neat data . Great style. Thank you.!
New potential user here.
I have read the manual but I am still not clear about a certain aspect of the L8.
Is it possible to use it as follows:
- reading from a card:
3 mono tracks or 1 stereo track, 1 mono track (WAV samples + mono click)
sending the stereo/2 mono WAV tracks to the MASTER out and sending all 3 signals to one of the MONITOR outs?
I use a Presonus 1642 AI. It connects via firewire. Zero latency. How is the ZOOM latency via USB compare?
No idea. Sorry.
This is great. May I request a tutorial on the custom sound pads?
Thank you.

l have studio monitors connected into an audio interface at the mo... Steinburg Ci1 (yes the ole lil trickster)...Anyway I'm thinking of getting the L-8. So l can plug in the Alesis sr18 drum machine in and hear it without PC on. Now would all l need to do is plug the left and right audio speaker cables out from the monitors so as to hear the sound with out pc and then when l have pc on, change over the output driver to Zoom audio interface correct?
You might have an impedence problem coming out of a monitor and going into a line input (unless it is a powered monitor that has a line out).

Are the 7 and 8 line inputs stereo as I saw "In 7 L and In 7 R". Does this mean these inputs are stereo?
It is a single stereo input, but you can split it into two things if you want.
At marker 5 ;26 you said you hit a record button and it started to record. did not see the curser move or you touch the L-8. where is the record button. I have the green light on in Audition, but left to right recording is not showing. Please advise.
Sorry it was not very obvoious. I clicked the record button at the bottom of audition. You have to "arm" the track for recording, then hit record.
If you are using Audition and you want the output to go to the L8, you have to set the output to the Zoom L8 setting, these will then play on the tracks 7/8 when set to USB mode, then you should hear them on the L8
what about audio out?
Thanks!
I have not tried that, sorry. If you find out if it works, I would like to know!

Does the usb from the computer also power the Zoom L8 at the same time or do you need run off batteries when using the USB as an audio interface?
It does, but I recommend putting batteries in in case you are recording and it comes unplugged.
We have an L-8 and I didn't know any of this capability. Instead of Adobe Audition we use vMix. It doesn't show the squiggly lines of the recording but it works much the same as Audition. The goal of the L8 was to be a stand alone podcast device to make it easier for newbies (and not so newbies) to do a show with one piece of equipment. The audio interface on this device - and the other L8 recorders - is maybe not an afterthought, but certainly not their main function.
