Very stoked for this thing. I feel like we’re about to see some really well mixed modular jams on the tops of mountains and in the middle of the ocean and stuff.
Apparently it's also a 12-in 4-out audio interface, which is pretty cool. That's a pretty good deal for 10 (plus 2 master) inputs, as well as being a recorder (and compact enough to fit on my desk with my synths!)
I was sold almost the moment I saw it. I’m tapped out on inputs into my 16 in audio interface, so this as a sub mixer that can still independently record all its inputs if needed is GREAT. And being able to yank it out of my home setup for gigs is also high utility. WOOT!
Immediately pre-ordered here in Germany. Can‘t wait for this problem-solver for me as a solo acoustic/electric performer who also sings and uses a few extras (like a Boss DR01-S rhythm maker and a Meinl Kick (stomp) pedal, plus a Dig Deep octaver for a pseudo-bass) and only has 3 inputs on the EV Everse 8 speaker. This will let me easily get everything pre-mixed that needs to go to Channel 3 (Aux) of the Everse 8. Great form factor and options! Thanks for detailing the features for us.
Wow! This is exactly what I was looking for. I want a dawless setup in a rather limited space. Already got my eyes on Zoom L bigger brothers because of recording feature but they're just too big for my setup. This is perfect. The 2 x Aux sends on top is orgasm. The Roland P-6 Sampler and Zoom L6 are the winners of portable devices of 2024 in my book.
Seems like a really slick little tour mixer and interface! Big board features, baby board footprint for customs, and easy to whip out and work with in a pinch. The transparency of the mix and low noise floor sold me.
Thanks for the informative and as always relaxing review Jorb! I was so frustrated when I lost the opportunity to purchase the zoom h6 (can't find it anywhere) months ago. I quit trying to find the Swiss Army Knife portable mixer for my recordings and mobile routings for good... and then you show up with your review! Hallelujah brother!!!! Ordered and waiting like faithful Penelope for mine to arrive :)
My first exposure to Zoom gear was their 9002 guitar effects processor at the beginning of the nineties. It was a compact, idiosyncratic device that slotted onto your guitar strap, was surprisingly affordable and sounded amazing. Even though I haven't been a regular Zoom customer over the years, I'm glad they're still going and producing quality products well over three decades later.
Seems to be class compliant so it should be a nice addition to an mpc! Connected via usb, you can expand your in/outs and chain up some pedals etc for a nice compact setup.
VERY INTERESTING THANKS, Just bought the behringer Zoom8 and this would have been a good choise, although it has 4 xlr inputs.... anyway this seems to be more usable as I am used to old style analog pots-way to adjust things!!! 😄
I’ve been wanting something like this forever. Small format, a good amount of channels, mixing abilities but not taking up a lot of panel space with knobs. Recording. A perfect version for me would have double the stereo channels. Basically I like all my gear plugged in simultaneously so I can just turn it on and play, without having to plug and unplug synths. My current mixer handles the job but is the size of a normal analog mixer, ie: huge.
Wow, this is so cool...I have a model24, and I have never taken it to jam because of the size... this little guy, some mics and cables in a backpack...and you could toss a couple mics on a kit, mic cabs and take an out from the p.a for your vocals... what a rad piece of gear
This is amazing! I'm building a pedalboard for my synth setup and this has the perfect footprint and enough I/O. I want to run two FX sends for my reverb and delay pedals and it is important to run them as I might have multiple synths that needs reverb at the same time. Further, since I'm submixing my keyboards I face the challenge that if I want to record a gig, I usually only have the stereo track to work with. But here I can just pop in a SD card and record keyboard tracks individually and sync everything after the fact. 1/4" jacks are perfect for my use case. I would not want to deal with 1/8" jacks in a professional setting.
I absolutely love my L20... such a workhorse for jam/shows/synthing around. I was just starting to look for a smaller format mixer for my workspace, and this pops up. Absolutely sold, and love that I can put it in my eurorack!!!
It's an incredible piece of gear. They are going to sell like hotcakes I'm sure. I can see stacking them around your studio as well as you buy more gear. The AUX send / return. Those are stereo TRS right? Anyway, awesome review Thanks!
Seems like a good unit. An audio (1-pot) compressor on the mic inputs would've been appreciated, and easy to implement. Only fault I find on the unit is location of the off/on discriminator. If one has to pick up or thumb-hold the unit when introducing channel 2 xlr input it appears easy to depress and depower. Back panel would've been better for safety's sake. How much for that RE-201?
I agree about the tiny cards. I honestly, (maybe just being a relic who prefers a physical media format for my music, wether it be production or consumption), would be happy with a format that was thesize of an old zip drive or something, or at least a minidisc. But I do think the maxi-sd cards are sufficient for the puroses of cataloguing into a book or something, pieces I can at least hold in my hand and not…only lose. I guess we should just be happy they give us anything at all that is ours to keep and not just a susbscription to “THE CLOUD.”
My very first effects pedal came from Zoom years ago. Their products are always a great value at an affordable price. Their R24 recorder is my absolute favorite piece of gear. The LiveTrak series came later and, IMHO, has lost some of the functionality of the R series. I now collect R24s as they are no longer being produced. They can be used as a mixer, an audio interface and as a DAW controller as welll as a 24 track recorder (8 tracks simultaneous great for band practice) I hope someday Zoom brings back some of the features from the R series. Zoom has also announced a new looper that looks highly functional at around 200 bucks. This post is pretty off topic but...
I happen to be in the market and this looks perfect. I went looking for affiliate links, but I'm not seeing a link to Perfect Circuit. I see the giveaway and trade ins. I'll use the giveaway link and go from there. Hope that gets you credit.
Superb mixer for desktop hybrid studio , I have the L12 which is really too big and too many inputs for what I need I was going to down grade to the L8 but I may get this unit..
Sequential Multitrack and CS1x/AN1X (after yamaha purchased Sequential) both use that type of menu structure. Also see the Waldorf Pulse (i'm sure there are more)
@@wireguy123 Fair enough it looks like they've done it but not with that stripped down interface which is what I would have wanted along with semi-weighted keys. It looks like they put synth type keys on it if you want the 61 keys version. It's understandable given the existence of CPs and YCs but still.
I love the mixer my only question is how do you combine and synck audio and video together to a computer to post this videos? I would appreciate if you could answer this question. Otherwise Yes this is the best portable mixer I have seen around. Thank you for posting this video. Cheers
This might be the ultimate compact mixer for live synth sets. Really love the form factor. Wisheverything wasn't so dependent on the master channel - would it have been THAT much more compute power to make it so? Not a deal breaker. I like it
Seriously considering combining this with my Xenyx 1002B for live DAWless use. That'll give me two additional fx sends, and four more stereo ins' plus a few other little goodies in a seriously compact mixer!
all it needs an fw update to turn on a switch to turn the 2 aux out into a single stereo aux out. so many wonderful stereo aux units out there, no mixers without spending a shedload for a large digital mixer supports stereo aux out so we all chasing a few 80s mixers that do that
There's also an L8 for another £50, also runs off batteries, has 6 mic ins, 4 monitor outs, but bigger and with old-school faders. I guess it's more for podcast/live use...
Wow this looks like an absolute standout. Have been looking for a compact mixer I can take to gigs without unplugging my mackie 12 channel unit, which is small as mixers go but overkill for my 4 channel synth rig. This thing ticks absolutely every box as far as I can tell. I guess it's sort of what Teenage Engineering was aiming for with the TX-6, but Zoom saw that and said "wouldn't it be nice if we made that with full size jacks that don't need special little 3.5mm cables?" Brilliant work from zoom, great review as well. EDIT: Just want to add that the efficiency and clarity of the mixer layout and the screenless UI is really superb. There is zero wasted space, it's absolutely clear what everything does, illumination is used to great effect, and it's very pleasing to look at as well. Impressive collaboration between the design team and E.E. side to execute this.
Re comp agree, they could do a firmware update and make the comp button a toggle for per channel adjust like on the mixer section. Then future per channel features (eg mid frequency or fx 1 or 2 select) could be added by pressing two eq buttons at once, both stay highlighted. Tbf a lot of future proofing could be embedded with a shift button, maybe they can recruit an existing button as a shift button and buttons can flash if in secondary mode. Manual / menu divey I know but let’s root for the perfect mixer 🫶
I've been using a Yamaha MG10XU for bringing electronics on stage for a minute but this seems like it could be really handy. I'm torn on the form-factor as it's like, a pro AND a con depending on what purpose the mixer's serving. Will bookmark this one for sure
Have you tried MIDI synch with this rig? I wanted to do this type of thing, but someone said: It cannot send MIDI timing out! (As the Tascam 12 actually CAN, and makes it great.)
@@JorbLovesGear Well, it's good to have the recording begin right on Bar 1 of the first beat, you know, for importing things into a DAW and edit them later, also to do multiple takes with everything lined up perfectly. This can happen with things like Tascam 12, and what i'm using now: Ableton Push 3

Yup basically feels like it was made just for me lol perfect mixer and recorder for all my mini hardware synth jams.
Nice one Jorb!
A very cool little thing. I don't understand why nobody wants to do stereo FX sends though, especially when it's digital.
Now you've got me Jorbsing for an L6.

it can record 12 channels seperatly into my daw?
How is it 12 in when there are 10 inputs?
I don't have one, I'm just going off what's in the manual. 10 inputs plus 2 master channels.
10 + 2 midi (3.5 jack)
Isn’t it 10 inputs + 2 for master?

The Zoom R4 is awesome. My regular mixer goes into the R4 and I use it as my main audio recording device. It's great and works perfectly.
Yeah the folks at Zoom have been tapped in lately. Been a fan for a long while though. 10-15 years ago I used to record all my music into an r24
Has anyone used this as usb audio interface? How well does it work? How many ins and outs does it show on a daw? Thanks
