While it’s not about JUST the Olympics, Yawara A Fashionable Judo Girl had the 1992 Olympics as a massive plot element, culminating in the Olympics. Each episode ended with a countdown to the 1992 Olympic games - the first time women’s judo would be a medaled event. It was so popular, one of the competitors was nicknamed Yawara-chan. Also please cover Yawara someday if you’re ever so inclined.
Honestly the lamest part about the new BA is how unathletic the girls look. They all look thin and spindly. In Victory and the OVA, these were fit, muscular young women. Some of them could break 200lbs of sheer muscle. Yes theyre still thin and conventionally pretty, youre not going to see power lifters in this, but at least it's better than 7 preteens with the exact same preteen body
Nice to see a Kyoto Video retrospective on two of my favourites. That was a pleasure to watch. Pity we weren't graced with at least one clip from the OVA's horrendous gag dub, but oh well. As for the 19:12 - 22:14 segment, I don't see the issue/harm, Anna is happy at the end of the day.
I gotcha. If I were one of the writers, I would've made it slightly different. "Oh, you're a boy?!" "Y-yes." "Huh." "..." "I'm in trouble. My mom made me do this." "Oh shoot." And then commence the scene where anna is happy or something. Honestly, Akari and anna would've been a neat couple imo. But we gotta get dem yuris, baby!
I'm so sorry about the irrelevant comment especially if I'm wrong but _Kaiserbeamz Kyotovideo is that a Homestuck song in the BG music_,,,,, Anyway since I'm here, your videos have been some of the most consistently high quality and unexpectedly interesting stuff on RUclips in years. Excuse me awesome possum RUclipsr! Animation x Paralympic covers the Paralympic games! I demand retractions and to be put on staff as a fact checker forever! But in all seriousness, it's a neat little series that I wish more people had heard of. Especially since it was a collaborative process done specifically to promote the games.
i prefer the OVA over Victory, mostly because Akari is NOT A FREAKING CRYBABY IN IT!!! (seriously,i was getting PTSD flashbacks of wanna be the strongest in the world while watching the early episodes of Victory)
The only reason I know this anime is because of that iconic, sexy, leotard outfit that I loved ever since I first saw fanart of them. The rest of the anime I have no idea about.
I remember watching this on tv back in the late 90s, couldnt remember the name, the only thing i could remember well was the ending where the protagonist have to race agains the young clone of her mom.
It was a given that you'd cover _Battle Athletes_ eventually and as usual, you delivered And I agree, _Victory_ is _far_ more entertaining than the OVA and the final episodes of _Victory_ are so much fun _ReSTART!_ just didn't need to exist, and it was redundant since we already have _Uma Musume_ as as the closest modern day successor to _Battle Athletes_ anyway The fact that we have so little yuri fanart of _ReSTART!_ compared to the OG series pretty much says all (And even before I realized that I'm trans, the OVA's treatment Anna always left a bad taste in my mouth, so I'm in full agreement there too)
Hope you take a look at Battle Programmer Shirase. It's a low-budget Hayashi show that has a lot of great humor (including a rare dig at fansubbers) and is both unlike and very much in tune with his works.
Time purposes. Plus, as much as I dig some of the performances in the dub, I didn't want to subject you all to Bridget Hoffman putting on a broad Chinese accent in her performance as Ling-Pha Wong.
i know of ending sentences with 'aru' being a thing for anime characters with Chinese accents from Kagura from Gintama. i don't know if there's any base in reality to this trope. EDIT: I found an article but i dunno if soranews24 is a reliable source
in some ways Victory predicted Restart with Akari's mom and the plot point surrounding her lol think about it, someone decided to dig up the grave of something that had long since died and revived it. Battle Athletes RESTART is the same as Akari's mom, something that came from digging up the dead IP of a known series back in the day and was given a fresh coat of paint to supposedly compete with the "athletes/shows" of today but lacked the charm and grace of the original. There is nothing OMG OFFENSIVE about "wait, she is a he?!?" plot twist. It's bad because it's bad writing, pure and simple. Makes very little sense, mostly not believable, and clearly improvized last minute.
I know we were all about sub vs dub superiority back in the day, but I thought bav was one of the first (outside pokemon) i could tolerate in dub back in the day. For me, the only other female lead sports anime that affected me the same way was princess nine.
Watch the tv serie, and ova and well love the idea, beggining was good, but the ending goes wild, and non sense and no thanks, better than the modern version
22:10 wait, I get that their reactions and the jokes are terrible, specially for a series that is set so far into the future when humanity should be over those things, but this kind of scenario pops up in anime and games and people always forget the detail that the character was forced into the role by someone else. It is the Bridget discussion all over again, being raised as a girl was not the character's choice. If anything the dysphoria would come from being forced to live a role set to you by others. I don't get why this plot point was put in the OVA that way and also don't get why people see this plot point of parents forcing their children into gender roles they don't want and don't think it is odd.
@@vanzy01 Yeah, they would freak out. Being forced into a gender they did not fit into and only finding out late in life, the strange thing is that they don't freak out. It is an odd theme that pops up in anime and games and it is always handled in a strange way that removes the agency of the characters. The choice is always made by others. This OVA handles it weirdly twice since the character was raise and enrolled on the school as girl by the parents and then after the reveal the school decides that the character is a boy now and the character just goes with it. Bridget from Guilty Gear was raised as a girl due to village superstition. Marina from Fear and Hunger 2: Termina was raise as a girl to be spared from the Dark-Priest succession. They just accept the role that was imposed on them. And in works such as Lady Oscar, Fruits Basket or Persona you have female characters forced into male gender roles but instead of accepting it they end up learning to accept themselves, which seems to me like a better way to handle the subject. I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Well, is it really? Kaitlyn Jenner a former olympic athlete pointed out that trans women should not compete with biological women because it wouldn't be fair, and that it was unsportsmanlike. It is a fact that women are different from men biologically, which is why sports are separated to begin with. A man competing in women's sports is seen as unsportsmanlike because he is doing so knowing that he has a biological advantage over his competitors. It's also not as if there isn't a section for trans athletes. There is actually a division for trans athletes. Some of them just don't want to compete in it likely because their own ranking in that division is low. Which is why that trans swimmer lost their case.
@@brightlight8852 Agreed. One can look and feel as female as they want, but if they went through all the development stages of a male person, the biological differences are just there and won't go away. It's not transphobic, it's just that women also want and deserve a fair competition.
