What I also find interesting about Tylor is that, even though he never says it outright, he's essentially an anarchist. But a chill pacifist anarchist. And the idea of putting a man like that in charge of a warship is just one of the best concepts ever. I feel like this is an idea you could remake/redo today and it would still feel just as fun and relevant. Also, now I'm hoping you cover Martian Successor Nadesico soon - another deconstructionist 90s sci-fi comedy anime which feels way more contemporary than one would expect from a show that old. I rewatched it recently and was shocked at how fresh it still felt.
There is an old saw that nothing creates more anarchist than working for the government. Cause and effect are reversed, but you'd be surprised how many variations of Tylor are in the government/military now.
A masterpiece. Captain Tylor just grabs me with the simple idea that a lucky and charismatic character can make so much without going too ridiculous, taking the story seriously enough and yet being funny and complex, developing characters, and having soo much chemistry. Just surprises me that not only every character in the anime is always curious about Tyler, but also us. One of the best characters in anime history. (Sorry my English by anything)
I watched this on a whim at the beginning of 2019. It was an amazing show, but then the last 2 episodes turned it into an absolute masterpiece. Shortly after I finished it, there was a kickstarter or something like that for a blu-ray release. That got a lot of well deserved money from me.
Some claim Tylor is a parody of Taro Kadokawa, son of infamous multimedia mogul Haruki Kadokawa and publisher of Newtype! Either way this one of the finest anime ever made and your impeccably well researched, enlightening video analysis is another triumph.
This show was a blast and it's a shame we never got an official English translation of the source material. I'd seek out copies if I knew they existed.
I got into this series several years back, and highly enjoyed it. Another case where this is the equivalent of a Mel Brooks-styled satire. For further parallels, I also see comparisons to, of all shows, Night Court, with Tylor being the Judge Harry Stone and Yamamoto being the Dan Fielding of the proceedings. Also, LOVE the use of audio from "Last Exit to Springfield".
One of my fav episode in Captain Tylor. The one early on Disk 2, I think it was Episode 6 overall but I might be wrong. Tylor gets a award medal for his bravery from the mission where he defeated the Enemy Captain (via the special gift he gave him in the previous few episodes ago) The 2 Generals of the United Planetary Space Force want to get rid of Tylor and his crew, so they set a trap within the medal that they gave Tylor. They sent Tylor and his Crew all the way out into the middle of space towards the front lines alone, press the button, only for the Generals to be surrounded by Enemy Ships when those ships should have been attacking Tylor and his Crew. Tylor ended up having a hole in his pocket thus accidently dropping his medal after receiving it as a reward. The reactions of the 2 Generals at home base was hilariously funny realizing they almost screwed themselves just by trying to get rid of Tylor as collateral damage.
The joke in giving a character the name Taira (or Tyler/Tylor) besides the "calm" meaning is that an alternate (and common) reading of the character is "Hira" as in "Hira Shain" = rank and file employee/grunt/peon. Similarly "Jiro" is "second son" and his family name is Sakai. Saburo (third son) Sakai was a noted Japanese WWII ace. Given that the commander of the Yamato's fighter wing was (Saburo Kato), makes it a double reference (since Tyler, like Nadeshiko hews very close to Yamato in basic structure). And, Japanese Destroyers historically had rather poetic names usually on a class theme. Three of the most notable were "-nami" (wave), "-tsuki" (moon, in this case the OLD names for months), and "-kaze" wind (ironically Kamikaze survived WWII). Soyokaze fits the pattern, but means "gentle breeze" (as featured in the original opening to Maison Ikkoku), not a very militant name at all.
Yeah, I interpreted Soyokaze as basically being the opposite of "kamikaze." However, "Gentle Breeze" also fits Tylor's personality and command style very well.
Genuinely one of my top 3 anime of all time. The dub and the artwork is just so cozy to me... I couldn't put all my thoughts and feelings into a comment, but I watch the movie OVA every time I feel depressed. It always makes me smile.
Great video, friend 👍 As someone relatively new to anime, Captain Tylor is one of my favorite retro anime that i have started watching😊 Along with City Hunter and the original 79 Gundam series. I really enjoy Tylor's character and his eccentric cast. Plus, he is the epitome of Crouching Dummy, hidden badass😂 but he is also a genuinely kind abd great MC.
I first saw this anime in 1995 as a fan sub at an Anime Club at the University of Texas at Austin meeting one Friday night. it was definitely a big hit among anime fans that year.
Matsumoto-sensei will be missed but we all know he's finally amongst the sea of stars flying the black flag of freedom making way for us to someday join him. Downtown Guy is probably the best closer to an anime I've ever heard. I've been in the otaku game for 30 years now and it's one of those songs that I will just randomly have to listen to. Tyler is probably the only captain that I would personally respect as much as Harlock. Both believe in freedom of action and that's the greatest choice anyone can have.
Truly a classic and a great and simple yet complete story about how simplicity and just being you is more important than almost anything else. Great job as usual Kaiser
We didn't do it, but back when anime AMVs were a thing, some friends and I were discussing doing a AMV of Captain Tylor set to TMBG's "Fingertips." The whole reason being that it was the one anime we could think of where we could get clips to match every single one of the mini songs of "Fingertips." Still wish we'd done it, but oh well.
Captain Tylor really seems a fun show that actually has some sort of message, so I'll keep it in mind (I have way too many shows labeled as plan to watch). RIP Matsumoto-san. One of his earliest shows, Starzinger (Spaceketeers) is finally getting a fansub (not a rewrite as the official english release was), and it does start a bit clumsily but it gets pretty good by the middle where the fansub got so far. Kids stuff for sure, but Japanese kids stuff with proper drama and death and opposing moral codes. It even has a character who is pretty much Lady Oscar as a righteous villain, good stuff.
There's so much 90's anime that I never got to see at the time, because it was nearly impossible to see outside an anime club. This and Slayers are the two big ones.
One of my favorite series of all time. I've got the VHS tapes and the DVD collection and have seen them several times (the tapes more than anything)... And I still haven't found the answer to what Taylor really is. I SO want him to be a genius, but then he goes and does something completely dumb for no logical reason... And yet, I would still follow him as my captain anytime, no questions asked. Thanks for this video. It made me remember so many fun times in the nineties.
My favorite anime, I'm covering it on a podcast with some friends. They have been less enthusiastic about most of it than me. Except they both love the Tylor character.
It has long been my opinion that Tylor is a master of wu wei in something of its more political form, achieving through appraising his subordinates and then getting out of their way as well as through personal virtue.
I adore this series. I love it continues to get the spotlight all this time later. I don't even remember how I discovered it but when the DVDs for the series and OVAs came out years ago I had to have them. I also loved that it had a Spanish dub which allowed me to share them with my parents and I was happy to find they enjoyed it as well. I've yet to buy the blu-ray release but I really should show my support for this masterpiece. Thank you for making this video!
I'm usually a weeboo who prefers the JP voice over, and my first exposure to this anime was in JP, too! But even I gotta admit: There's something rather special about the English dub. The voices, just fit so well!
Thank you so so much for making a video on this series! It’s my absolute favorite anime of all time and I feel like almost no one knows of it (at least in my neck of the woods). It warms my heart to see it getting the recognition it deserves :)
I gotta be honest, I wanted to hate this channel immediately cause I saw a mascot, lol. I'm not sure what I expected, but I'm on this video of yours, now my third and I gotta say you did more than win me over. These vids are stellar. Tylor is an anime near and dear to my heart. This was a brilliant love letter. Great video, brother.
What if Mr Bean was the Captain of a Space Battleship and he's the PG reincarnation of Golden Boy's Kentaro? That would be the best way I can describe Captain Tylor.
I recently purchased this series and subsequent OVAs on Bluray. I have yet to actually sit down and watch them yet, but it is lined up in my que. I have heard nothing but good things about this series so my purchase was a no brainer.
What a coincidence I live in NYC and I was at the BookOff store a month ago and pick up this dvd, I have a huge backlog to watch but I will watch this now, great video by the way
I came across this anime by complete chance (heck, I don't even remember how, that's how random it was) and was bulldozed by how _good_ it was. I immediately bought the box sets. lol It's also one of the 5ish anime I liked dubbed and was a great way to test if the whole "whatever you hear first (dub or sub) makes the other one sound wrong" theory.
6:06 by the way, I vaguely remember this from another *Captain Tylor* video, "Soyokaze" could also be taken as a fart joke. 😉😉 I also love how they have numerous references to the characters. The "badass marines" have Jason Vorhees, Wes from *The Road Warrior,* Chuck Norris and I believe the brown haired guy is supposed to be John Rambo. And of course there is the Master Roshi reference with the doctor. 7:55 considering his height and aversion to women, I have to wonder if this was a little jab at Tom Cruise, who was not only in *Top Gun,* but is 5'4" and was rumored to be gay (or at least bi-sexual). 11:45 wow.. maybe it's just me, but the first thing I thought of was the town from *Uzumaki.* All that's missing is the lighthouse. 34:00 don't forget about the time Tylor used a solar flare to destroy a Raylgon fleet! Or what he did during the final confrontation!
Along with Legend of the Galactic Heroes This is one of those space operas from the old days Oldtaku will BEG you to watch and most people still won't. But I did So now **I** get to beg you to watch it for god's sake
Loved this anime back in the day, Tylor must have been the reincarnation of Golden Boy Kentaro Oie. I could even imagine Mr Bean as a captain of a Space Battleship.
Taylor was a gateway anime I introduced many into! Not only for its hilarious hijinks, but it's beautiful animation with Awesome voice acting! I even recommended friends to shop by Right Stuf over the phone, to have Justy Ueke Taylor greet them with a message! ❤( Which would also include Alucard from Hellsing....also played by Crispin Freeman!😂)
I bought the DVDs from Right Stuff back in .... 2000? This is still my favourite animation series because of the music and vibrant characters (Yamamoto!!!)
My best friend was one of the pre-orders and his name is in the credits. He gave me his "I made the Tylor DVDs happen" t-shirt. Hardly ever see him these days and we were like brothers back then ; ;
I have watch these anime at least 6 times, neve manage to watch gundam, i watch gundam wing, and that is it, i watch legend of galactic hero till episode 72 i beleive should end it with the conversation of Reinhard and Yang, and well i watch Harlod but more or less episode 10, these was the only serie i watch of space several times and i love it
Thanks for the shout out for a leiji Matsumoto. I will always miss him for he gave us the greatest epic in the Endless Sea of stars...
Thanks for the recommendation
Captain Harlock: You can come with me if you promise to be true to yourself and your beliefs!
Captain Tylor: Imma take a nap and eat a hot pocket!
And not one of those newer, fancier Hot Pockets. A regular ol' Ham and Cheese Hot Pocket. Simple and classic.
