I feel like a lot of the nudity in Naoko's drawings is supposed to be sensual rather than sexual. The human body is as much part of everyday life as everything else (even more so lmao), especially for a Teenager. Of course there are pieces that seem pretty overtly sexual but I think most of them utilize nudity in the same way the 90s Sailor Stars Finale used it, for purity and humanity.

    • @arcyarcanine
      @arcyarcanine Год назад +141

Let's not forget that aside from fashion, part of the inspiration for Sailor Moon is Greek and Roman mythology, which are well known for their tasteful nudity in art pieces. I think that's what it really comes down to for Takeuchi; it's artistic.

Naoko was progressive but she wasn't woke, sexuality or being attractive to men wasn't something she was angry about.

    • @tenshikaren
      @tenshikaren Год назад +60

@@MrConredsX but that kinda isn't the point. Japan has a lot of their culture based around the 'cult of beauty' ideals. It's deeply embedded in their culture. Sexuality WAS an expected part of that but not the focus. Nudity, especially posed in obvious sensual and very Roman poses, points more heavily to a 'beauty shot' than a 'pin up' (although I find old pin ups fall into both categories). Sailor Moon was always targeted for a young female audience, so these 'beauty shots' were designed as a different, possibly aspirational, sort of art. I agree that this was never intended to be a 'sexual fan-service'. It's supposed to be alluring in the same way as Barbie is; unrealistic beauty that plays up what society seen as the height of femininity.
The 90s (not only in the U.S.A. but around the world, but I know how extreme it was here) saw many countries move towards recognition that a woman should be allowed to feel sexy, dress sexy, not be ashamed to express themselves and their needs as loudly as a man, and not feel predated on because of it. I say recognition because technically this was true long before but both sides acknowledging equality takes time and popular opinions of our peers is often far worse than law. I feel that a lot of what sparked this turning point was because the middle east was seeing a political shift towards censorship and the rest of the world felt rightfully threatened by it.
Because of this, the ideals of being feminine were rapidly broadening. Sailor Moon was a show that not only subtly told a young girl she could do anything, it did so in a way that told her she didn't have to act masculine to do so, and also that there was nothing wrong with taking on some masculine traits either. The line-up of characters that the scouts represent is very diverse and nude shots helped remind young girls that they were all still very much girls like them. This also makes the characters appear vulnerable and thus more relatable.

Gotta say that explanation of Sailor Cosmos was very inaccurate. Who she is is not ambiguous at all. She's Usagi's most evolved form. After losing everyone she loves and fighting a thousand year war in space, she's always regretted running away in her timelines version of the final manga arc. So she traveled to the past. So emotional over seeing the younger more innocent version of herself and seeing all her friends alive again, she took the form of Chibi-chibi as a way to both comfort her younger self, and bask in the sweetness of this happier time. Ultra powerful and extremely lonely, she's trying to give the young version of her hope (that final arc can get rather bleak) and help her so that her timeline never happens.

The first being that the reason they have nail polish during the transformation is due to a 90s toy company approaching him with a manicure set they could rebrand. His response was, "Ok, but they wear gloves..." He also explained that the reason for the focus on wavy hair and stock frames was that they had a low cel frame alottment and the series was for girls so they focused on making them glamorous rather than violent. Sailor Pluto dutifully maintains the law of time and suffers death for violating the rule of stop time. She studies physics, the structure of the cosmos - as Saturn is associated with order, structure, rules, responsibility, and stoicism.
Sailor Pluto is manipulated and controlled by overwhelming forces and undergoes a death and rebirth cycle, themes and a transformation that are symbolically Plutonic.
At very least there’s a mix of Saturn and Pluto themes for the characters.

And whereas Pluto changes as a person, Hotaru doesn't. The original Sailor Saturn we meet in the Death Busters arc that destroyed the Silver Millennium and who destroys Pharaoh 90 dies and she seems to be a different person than Hotaru Tomoe altogether along with the new Sailor Saturn that we meet in the dream arc. Also she gives all the outer senshi their power ups and she has this whole mini plot with her needing to grew up very quickly again (something that's very tied in with time - aging) her character arc is very Saturnian. I don't think they are switched up, as you said there is clearly elements of both in both of them but I think that's more related to what Naoko wanted each of the Senshi to do to move the plot forward rather than her lack of knowledge on astrology

The galaxy cauldron is where stars/planets are born and where they go after they die. That’s where Queen Serenity found the star seed that would eventually become Princess Serenity. Star seeds are embodiments of planets/stars and all the Sailor soldiers have Star Seeds, which is why they all die after Galaxia takes their star seeds. Anyway that’s why the fandom says Queen Serenity picked a star from the Galaxy Cauldron

The brazilian SM fandom could add a ton of entries to an iceberg, mostly relating to dubs. The original dub for the first season was very beloved when it aired, then the rights were changed to another studio and network, which recast everyone.
A lot of the dubbing itself was good, but the translations were a mess, like how all the sailors were called "Sailor Moons". Usagi's voice actress was particularly disliked, considering how much the original VA for the first season was loved in comparison, and because she got the role through nepotism (she was the daughter of the studio's owner lol). Her performance as Sakura on Card Captor Sakura on the other hand is loved by its fandom.
When the Eternal movies were acquired by Netflix, there was a lot of anticipation for what the dub would be. In the end they took everyone from the second studio, except for Usagi's. Not because of the hate but because she retired. Usagi's role went to a new one actress(...which was again related to the new director lol). But I think the biggest issue is that Chibiusa's VA absolutely does NOT sound like a child in the slightlest, 20+ from when she dubbed her in the 90's. Outside of that, for both it and other languages they kept all the english names and the "-chan, -san, -kun" suffixes which a lot of people hated.

You Brazilian fellows had to endure a full cast change just one season in? That's so sad. I've heard that some anime had similar issues with its Brazilian dubs due to studio / distributor changes screwing up everything, and it's a shame that Sailor Moon was no different. And by the way you initially talked about Eternal's release there, it seems that Crystal hasn't even been dubbed yet, right?
As a Latin American viewer, we were definitely luckier with us having a consistent and iconic cast within all classic seasons and movies (courtesy of Cloverway, funnily enough. It's much highly regarded here since the Latin Spanish dubs they made are very beloved and had minimal script changes, unlike in the US), aside from Mamoru getting recast halfway through R due to studio problems, and many of the original cast actually coming back to dub the newer material. Although there was a VERY controversial Luna recast however, since the studio (who took over for Crystal since the original studio had closed a long time ago. That other one ironically also went down sometime later so Eternal was dubbed elsewhere) wasn't keen on waiting for the original VA to recover from an illness. Michiru was also the only outer senshi to get her original voice back. And Makoto was inevitably recast since her OG VA passed away years ago.
Anyway, we did also have that same issue of the honorifics being all kept, which sounded quite awkward and was also disliked here. I once read that the suffixes being left intact was a mandate from the distributor/client that all dubs must include, so there was probably no way to discard them. Same with some previously translated terminologies having to be now said in English. And especially with the character names having to be the Japanese ones, as our LATAM dub of the 90s series used most of the DiC dub's first names (Serena, Darien, Lita and so on. And it all happened despite the dub being based on the original JP version since the beginning) and those were intended to be kept in the dub of the newer series for audience familiarity's sake, but the client forced the change to the JP names mid-recording, which was also a contentious issue with some fans. And aging has definitely affected some of the VAs' performances, most notably Mamoru (2nd voice since the first one moved away from Mexico to Canada), Rei (whose VA has basically retired a few years ago and only came back to voice her again btw) and yes, even Usagi to an extent. We're still glad they all came back though. And within the rest of the returning VAs, our Minako, Chibiusa and Michiru fortunately still sound just like they did in the 90s. Ami and Artemis also sounded good enough too.

I have a fun lil thing to add to Sailor Moon's history-Back in the late 90's my mother had a friend who was working with TokyoPop at the time and she gave me all sorts of neat little things that Ive never been able to find information on at all.She gave me some manga samples that had a lot of the prototype pictures and stuff of the manga as well as a free lil chapter. Thats not the weird thingy tho, she also gave me computer disk that was fully in japanese but it worked on my windows xp just fine. Ended up being this kind of clip art program that had toooons of jpg's of chracters and backgrounds from the show and manga. You could make sick little collages and print them out and put everywhere. I know I have that disk SOMEWHERE... But if anyone else has seen or owns this disk as well, do let me know. Ive been on multiple abandonware sites and the like and have never been able to find a rom of it.Another neat lil thing that lady gave me were some mugs with art on them, one having art from the beach day episode and another with art of just the cast in group pose. Best mugs ever.

Saturn in a birthday if you're pro enough, it can tell you about death and darkness in your life, too. It's complicated, but that's the gist. So no, Naoko wasn't wrong. She just happened to know more about these myths and how astrology functions in a chart. Naoko also uses references from hiduism and not only that, but she uses the chakra system and spiritual beliefs about them, similar to what is seen in ATLA. Chibi-Usa's split timeline could also refer to her appearance in S, and the theory that originally the events of the season ended more tragically, prompting Neo Queen Serenity to send Chibi-Usa back in time in the hopes she'd alter the past. There is some possible evidence for this: when Sailor Moon gets the Holy Grail, hair barrettes instantly appear on Chibi Moon's head. I've seen speculation that in the original timeline, she never got the Holy Grail, and her getting it changed history, which is reflected by Chibi Moon's outfit changing slightly.
(That, or they just forgot to include the barrettes when they introduced her Sailor Soldier form, and this was just a convenient moment to add them)
Also, I'm surprised to see no entry for Goldfish Warning! It aired in the same timeslot as Sailor Moon the year before Sailor Moon's debut, and had a lot of the same creative staff, meaning the shows frequently have a similar look to them. There's a ton of references to Goldfish Warning throughout Sailor Moon's first season, perhaps the longest-running one being Usagi's chicken alarm clock. The shows also crossed over with each other, kind of, in video games like Panic in Nakayoshi World.

2 things that i'd add to the iceberg are 1) kaitou ace being the first person ever from the silver millennium (that we know of) to awaken and 2) sailor moon: the movie. with the first, we find out in codename sailor v that kaitou ace knew about his past life in the silver millennium quite some time before sailor v, who as we know, is the very first of the senshi to be awakened. i've always found it interesting that long before the senshi, the cats, or any other nobility, the character who is the first we know of to find out about his past identity was in his own words just "a lowly foot soldier" in his previous life. idk why, but it's sort of intriguing to me how a guy who was a random low-ranking soldier in the silver millennium and a villain working for a villain working for another villain working for another villain in his current life was the first one to remember his past life ahead of more relevant characters. as for the second point, sailor moon: the movie, is a low budget fanmade sailor moon movie with terrible acting, terrible special effects, and terrible casting. luna is played by a very confused cat who hadn't been trained, the backgrounds were obviously taken from google images, and the actors nearly all look too old for their roles, except for queen beryl, who looks too young. the creator has said he made it as a way to practice using special effects, and had no budget, equipment, or crew. despite this, everyone involved took the project very seriously and the film was as faithful to the source material as possible, resulting in it being somewhat charming even though it's so bad. it's up on youtube

    - Apparently Mamoru is actually 17 at the beginning of the anime, according to the drama CD. Appartently, he skipped one year along the way (school system in Japan is different)
    - The Italian "twin sisters" thing came AFTER that bomboclat psychologist spoke, it was dubbed normally at first. The Starlights were presented as males that changed into females. As an Italian, I'm still pissed about it.
    - Oh, the Nostaligia Critic video really upset me. If you think the senshi's transformations are "ipersexualized", let me tell you, you've got some issues man.
    - About Saturn's and Pluto mithology mix up... Saturn in Japanese is dousei, which means "soil star" and Cronos (NOT Chronos) was the god of agriculture, that's why Saturn has her glaive. In fact her original color was supposed to be ocra, a yellowish brown. Also, it's not true that Takeuchi made the senshi in order of height, Uranus and Pluto are both taller than Jupiter, and Venus is shorter than Mercury.
    - Yeeeah, episode 45 upset me too, holy shit. Especially because I managed to see episode 46 only, like, 10 years after the first airing because of school schedule. I literally skipped school (I was 18 at that point) to watch that episode when they eventually aired it again, just before the worldwide rights block.
    - Ikuhara did Mamoru so dirty. He had 30 episodes to make Usagi's and Mamoru's relationship believable. Hence why PGSM is best canon.
    - There is a transformation of Mamoru into Sailor Earth with the leotard and everything. You can check it out in my channel (shameless self promotion, sorry :V)
    - Sailor Moon Another Story is so awesome, I want to make a manga about it so bad. Also, there is a new fan-translation recently released, I highly suggest to check that out!
    - I subscribe to the split timeline simply because thare are certain things that happen in the past that do not reflect in the future. Clearly Neo Queen Serenity does not know about Galaxia rampaging the galaxy, but Sailor Cosmos remembers that time. It means that Neo Queen Serenity timeline will be probably destroyed by Chaos since they never reset the Cauldron, while in the other Chaos and Cosmos will fight for all eternity.
    - I subscribe to the multiple Sailor Pluto theory too. The "past" one has died, when in Black Moon Arc uses the time stop, the present one has born in our time and it's the one with Uranus and Neptune, and the future one (Super form) has taken the place at the door. They all share their memories though.
    - I like the Phantom Silver Crystal better because phantom crystals actually exist.
    - Chibi Chibi doesn't ask Sailor Moon for help, quite the contrary, she was there to help her past self decide to actually destroy the Cauldron. Eternal Sailor Moon, though, tells her that if she did, stars would stop borning, and until stars shine, they cannot lose. She therefore make the same Choice as Cosmos', to reset the cauldron - so it's implied that Chaos will eventually come back and kill everybody leaving only Usagi as Sailor Cosmos to fight against her.
    - The Moon fairy was just Diana, as Diana the cat has yet to be invented. The fairy was supposed to guide the senshi in the Moon ruins and then presumably go back to Earth with them.
... I think I wrote a biiit too much and I'm still on minute 45. Welp.

Ok, I finally finished the video and I have to add a couple things (hoping that you don't mind of course!)
      - About Crystal Tokio dystopia, you might want to read the fanfiction "I'm here to help". It's awesome, and really capture the feeling of dread those unwilling to submit to Serenity had to endure. One of my favourite pieces in the Sailor Moon fandom.
      - Actually Tuxedo mask does transform in the manga, more than once. The most notable, is the one in the Dream arc, after coming back from Elysion.
      - ... There is also an art with Ikuhara and Mars naked together floating around, uh.
      - The timeline in the original anime is all over the place. When Usagi turns 15 (episode 101) it's supposed to be only two months in since the beginning of the series, since the school year starts in April in Japan and Usagi's birthday is in June .-.
      - Oooooh, I love that game for PC Engine! "Koisuru otome wa makenai" and "Onaji hoshi ni umareta" are absolutely stunning songs. ... And as a shitennouxsenshi shipper I cannot not appreciate the small NephritexJupiter bit

@@Starseed86 About Usagi's age in her birthday episode in S - this is incorrect, as S takes place during the school year following Classic/R. I'm pretty sure there is a Tuxedo Unmasked article about this. You can see the senshi studying for high school entrance exams all through S (which only 3rd year middle school students would do), and SuperS takes place at the end of that school year and into winter/spring break prior to Stars (which is why the senshi are mostly not seen in their school uniforms during SuperS!).

@@oddlazdo It's kinda confusing though, to be honest. Even if she rounds up her age and actually turns fourteen after the start of the series (Classic), there's still the problem is that she should've have a birthday in R too, since we have an hanami episode (51) and then a summer episode (67). If she turns fourteen then (between these episodes I mean), it means that the R starts when she's still in first year and the ginzuishou actually brought her back earlier than the standard series start.

Thank you for making this interesting and informative video!!💖 1:01:31 IDK if anyone has already pointed out. In the Sailor Stars Sailor Neptune single, the prologue mentions Michiru had had a dream of apocalypse repeatedly, then the memory of her previous life awakened💚

Thank you so much for such an amazing video. I am still watching and I don’t know if anyone has mentioned, but the tuxedo mask transformation, refers to his kind of mock transformation that is shown only once in the live action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. You can find the video here in RUclips

As someone who lives in jakarta, the creepy sailor moon statue was EVERYWHERE in random malls in varying levels of creepiness, though i don't remember it being THAT bad. There was also a mini sailor moon ride version I used to go on when I was 3. This video just unlocked a core memory in me. Anyway, i don't think I've seen one in a long time, but it's probably still somewhere out there traumatizing some kids.

Watched with subtitles and translation, my English is bad (from troubles and sorrows).

So I have a few extra points here:
As far as a few of things to add to the iceberg:
    1. "Sailor Moon Abridged" which was a parody series created by Corine "Megami33" Sudberg. She was/is closely involved with Team Four Star and featured prominently in both their DBZA and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged series.
    2. In the PGSM Live Action series, Minako is a idol who has a hit song called "C'est La Vie" which sounds a lot like "Sailor V" to Western ears.
    3. Haruka and Michiru relationship being explained away as they were "cousins" in the original NA Dub. (Similar to Makoto's "talent.")
    4. "Sailor Stars" both deviating from the previous seasons naming conventions and having a completely different opening theme. ("Sailor Star Song" vs. "Moonlight Densetsu.")
Now for a couple of corrections and additions:
1:09:47 "The Moonie Code:" This is actually far more connected to "The Geek Code" created by Robert Hayden during his time as a student at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota. The Moonie Code is a direct "reskinning" of the original version. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek_Code (Also, I went to school there at the same time and was part of the Role-Playing Student Organization that he was a prominent member of.)
1:16:00 "PGSM Actors and Porn:" Aya Sugimoto, who played Queen Beryl in PGSM also started in the adult films "Flower and Snake" (Hana to Hebi) and it's sequel "Flower and Snake 2." Now, I don't know if they would be considered full on pron. But they do easily fit in the term "Ecchi." It is far more "Hard Core" and Japanese take on stuff like "50 Shades of Grey."
