IT'S SO ANNOYING this video is a product of passion and effort and yet it's success is determined by hidden numbers on a stupid algorithm. I KNOW people would want to watch it, and yet I can't understand why this channel doesn't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers at least
Just for context of how strong Luna is: she is the Knight of Ceifeed (the Shinzoku counterpart of Shabranigdo), can cut a dragon slave in half, and once defeated a plasma dragon with a kitchen knife. She's either equal to or stronger than Xellos, who happened to have defeated the army of dragons with a swipe of his hand. There is a good reason Lina is afraid of her older sister.
Out of the 3, TRY is my favorite. I like Philia's inclusion to the party and balancing out the chaotic energy from the whole group. Her interactions with Xellos is pure gold
*4th **#Slayers** Review video now.* *I'm really starting to understand why this is such a beloved **#gem**! Despite being spoiled with EVERYTHING, I'm gonna binge all the seasons and movies from start to finish!!! Just from the spoiler reviews alone, I know this one will already have a place in my ALL-TIME **#ANIMES** List!* *Thanks a thousand, **#KaiserBeamz**!!!* _new sub_ 🔥🪄✨
This has been a fun ride watching the three Slayers videos that dived into their history and I can tell there is a lot of love you have for this, like I mentioned in the NEXT video my most fondest memories of Slayers was from Lina's journey's with Naga and I look forward to when you get to those, In particular the "motion Picture" and the Book of Spells OVAs since those are my personal favorites. Stay Gold KB
Wonderful video! Try is honestly one of my favorite seasons, damn near tied with Next. Super dark at times but that is one of the main reasons why I love it. Also, Xellos and Filia. Their banter is wonderful and reminds me of parents. Good shit lmao. 26:22 well that's a screenshot that is immediately going into my dedicated Slayers folder lol
This series was my first introduction to the Slayers frachise. It used to be Anime Network on demand and the first episode I caught was the train episode. Try holds such nostalgic memories for me that even with the flaws I still love it. It felt familiar and new knowing that it was mostly TAJpro VAs helped too. I loved these characters and the enfing still gave me such strong feelings even though I never knew these characters before this season. Even though Next is the best series overall Try is still my favorite and holds a special place in my heart. Also Jillas is best boy and was my furry crush don't judge me.
"Same old pattern"! "Same old cheap joke" That's something I've really come to *love* about anime media; it has a *self-awareness* to it that western animation & live action just *doesn't* . I've seen a *lot* of recent western made shows use those same cheap jokes without giving so much as a *blip* of acknowledgement that they're using a cheap, worn out joke. Also, I can definitely see why the Japanese are fans of *absurdist* humor; that scene of Lina reacting to seeing it was her big sister that wrote that letter by speed building a *pyramid* & sarcophagus, leaping *into* the sarcophagus, & burying all but the very *tip* of the pyramid into the ground before loosing a scream that can be heard through *all that* , is really just *hilarious* , even if I *do* think it's cruel that her big sister can & *does* blackmail her like that.
I had no idea this season was divisive. All I know is I enjoyed it. Personally I freaking loved that Xellos was a constant frenemy. It made perfect sense for his character and I thought it was very well written for that. It played on the themes of him being the trickster and not really an ally but also being an ally. I still think the first season is probably my personal favorite but the third season was still really good too me at least.
Aww, you skipped over my favorite bit of comedy in this season: Lena and Gourry's absolute despondence at losing the sword of light. Not because of the sword itself, but because they lost to *Jyllis* of all people. The pain of losing to a third-rate henchman.
As someone coming off the back of finishing Next today who hasn’t watched Try - the way this video describes Try it gives me major Rayearth Season 2 vibes?
As much as Zel and Amelia are my favorites and I am glad they didn't replace them with Luke and Milina, I do still hope someday maybe we get a new season featuring them and their arc. Plus, I just want more Slayers. Honestly, I was thrilled with Rev/Ev, especially after so many years with no new content. It would be nice to feel that way again.
Just happened to stumble on your channel. Slayers Try was the anime that truly sent me into the whole anime thing. While I agree that Try isnt quite as strong as NEXT, it is by no means 'weak'. Certainly not first season weak, and a hell of a lot stronger than that weak ass 'new' season they crapped out a while back. People complain of 'not taking the characters further' - well, that is some thing that franchises like this run into -- when you outright kill a god, how do you go UP from there? Stargate ran into that, Dragon Ball is all ABOUT that, and there's a laundry list of anime that tangles in that mess. Slayers? They just stick with what works, why? Cause it WORKS. With the Jillas character, there's some seriously effing creepy flash screens that while we miss in the VHS days, here in the digital age we can see it in all its horror. All ill say there is when Jillas has his schoolboy flashback, slow it at your OWN risk. also, 20:10, that is a ship i have on my wall. Funny how the 'golden dragons' were genocided by a monster after genociding another race that in turn creates a monster. The interesting thing there is the, uh, 'plot device' of a sole survivor returning to wreak havoc is itself an old one, but in this case well done. ALSO ---- Lost Universe WHEN? Speaking of, im... less than convinced that the Overworld in Slayers is the LU. But wont pretend to be an expert. Also kinda wonderin if/when we will see the rest of Slayers grace the channel....
By halfway of the NEXT review, you earned a sub, the hard way. I've a love for Slayers aswell, though my original experience was with a polish lector over it and ok-ish translations, but the characters kept me running from school in triple speed, just to not miss the next episode. :) Thanks for a trip down memory lane, my friend is being tormented by Slayers! now. :)
Really great video, it's interesting to get new perspectives on Try since it's a series I've always felt so mixed on. I honestly can't tell you if I like it or not. Funnily enough, I think the series is actually at its best at the first half before the silly filler episodes kick in. While the pacing was a bit meandering, I thought the build-up to Episode 14 was really well done all in all. Everything after that just doesn't hype me up in quite the same way. When I got to the ghost ship episode the first time, I dropped the series for like half a year. Even when it gets back to the plot, I just didn't find myself as engaged as I was before. That being said, I enjoyed this video a lot.
Reading the comments here gives you a taste for how divisive Slayers Try is for the community. With that said I believe I fall more in the it was good camp. I don't think it was the strongest season but I prefer it over the first in some ways. I loved Filia too I think she was an interesting character. Next will always be my favorite though.
Thanks to you i've now started re-watching the show again. i think i dropped it mid season 2, many years ago. Now i got the whole saga entirely. I even got the English version of each season OVA and Movie separately, with the highest quality possible (it's a bitch to find it in high quality and in English, so i'll import the audio later), the OVA's and Movies look especially beautiful. it all weights 182 gb. So Thank you a lot!
What a surprise, few days ago I found this channel and your Slayers Next review. I loved Slayers Try, even more than the first season. By the way where is this character in 0:12 from?
I picked up Lost Universe a while ago on a whim from Rightstuf after their distribution arm, Nozomi Entertainment, put up some episodes on their RUclips Channel. I loved it, and thought it was a real fun - and real familiar - watch. Now I know why! I don't think I ever would've put two and two together and figure out it was from the same guy behind Slayers! Your stuff is always excellent, but even quickie "throwaway" lines in the middle of your vids offer up some insight that blows my mind :)
Amazing video! Very well put and edited! Loved to hear a retrospectibe so good on one of my favorite shows growing up. I definitely going to track the original series, probably with the Japanese voices. I grew up with the latin American version and it was great, but I'd like to check out the original. Loved your video! I'll definitely binge watch your channel :D
I think you should cover all the Naga related anime material in one video. The first 4 movies and the 6 OVAs in my opinion, comes together to form what I call, "Slayers Season 0". Also, when you do get to Season 4 and 5, just cover them in one video since they come together to form one complete season long story.
This season is good, but what bugs me most is the gag that happens between Lina and Gourry most of the time. Like in previous seasons, Lina only gave Gourry a beating if he did something wrong, but here even a question from Gourry is too much for Lina and makes her kick his ass. This doesn't make any sense. Like what, has Lina become the tsundere kind of girl who beat her love interest for nothing? Come on, give him a break!
18:47 yeah it wasn’t all her fault but was a part of his destruction I been saying that whole time when I watched TRY but I guess someone has to be blamed since Hellmaster is dead
I honestly love Slayers Try. Not as amazing as Next but it's a great season that holds up on its own and as a squeal. Way better than Revolution and Evolution R.
I love ❤️ Filia The Golden Dragon she’s my favorite dragon based anime character and to me she’s super cute in both her human form and dragon form and if I were to meet her in real life or in her world I would most 10000,10000,10000% befriend her no matter in a instant 🥰
I watched all seasons of Slayers and OVA movies a few years ago, and I will say I loved all 3 original 90s seasons and loved the OVAs, the 2000s comebacks however were bland and boring and THEY retreaded more ground than S3 ever did.
You know, I find it amazing there's a small but passionate fan base for my favourite of the long running shonen-style anime from the '90s-'00s. I guess to put my own opinion on the biggest and most divisive question for the fans out there: I personally liked Try, a lot. Missing Luke and Milina hide some of the more serious tones that can exist in the series and Try is the closest that the series gets to those arcs in my opinion. While, as noted, Filia does sometimes overlap with Zelgadis' role in comedic scenarios (leaving him with very little to do at times), her unique position makes her a worthwhile addition. I'd agree with the video that the comedy filler episodes are probably the weakest of the three series for the most part. I personally love the Alice in Wonderland episode because it just goes so far out there (as well as the punchline for the Super Sentai episodes...spoilers of course, that they're actually just village idiots that are being humoured by the locals instead of actually protecting them). The whole series feels like a worthwhile addition. It emulates the shift in tone the novels took presents some characters at their best (e.g., Xellos, who is certainly at his most sadistic and cruel here, worthy of his title of Zelas' priest...contrast Next and Evolution-R, where he mostly plays with his targets and gets punished for it or just serves as a way to show that the enemy is strong). The biggest issue is that it feels like the writers didn't have the time to put together a full season. Everything probably fits into 13 episodes if there was no filler. So, with the traditional filler in place you're probably ~8 episodes short of a full 26 episode series. And, at least to me, it feels like the writers started retreading the same ground to ensure they could get to that finish line.
I remember not hating this season, instead,, after watching it felt very confused as why use Dark Star just as publicity for Lost Universe, instead of using any of the other 2 evil gods of the lore (Death Fog or Chaotic Blue) ... Also, the fact that we haven't got the other novels animated, because the pretext that "Millena and Luke are so serious", after Try and the big waste of time that is Revolution and Evolution-R, it seems clear to me that they can find a middle ground between the snotiness of Filia and the 'crappyslaptick' abrasiveness of Pokota, and get a great dynamic with a party of six... They just don't want to.
My biggest criticism of Try is the original premise pretty much made void after the first quarter of the episode. All that buildup hype for the exploration of the world outside the Daemon's barrier, the initial sub-plot of the squad venturing in a world magic is much rarer and people reacts much more badly to magic miracles being show, etc.
Hey, I found this video in a Google search; I'm wondering if you watched via the DVD sets? I'm asking because there are some points where the animation turns into what looks like Photoshop was used to replace lost film.
My roommate and I believe that any time a fish person appears in the Slayers universe, the entire episode is going to be derailed into a filler episode. Look upon the fish and despair.
Divisive? I mean NEXT is a fan favorite but most regard Slayers, NEXT and TRY as the same package. But just because we think Martina is the most fun season-long supporting character does not mean we'd want to lose Filia and their slap kiss with Xellos (more Xellos is always good). Pretty much all other Slayers stuff is more "divisive", fewer people even watch the season 0 OVAs and season 4 (Re- and -Er) was kind of a long wait for a largelyunfulfilled promise. Plus, unfaithfulness to novels isn't a bad thing, especially since story progression largely came from the writers daring to be unfaithful to the source (such as with keeping the old gang together and furthering their relationships for starters).
And I am ONLY a fan of the dub, and it cemented my feelings for Lisa Ortiz being THE definitive Lina Inverse and my favorite voice actress of all time.
She didn't knock herself unconscious right before Valgaav showed up. Valgaav knocked her unconscious with his explosive entrance. And gentle reminder to ALL the shippers out there; the ship for this series is NOT Filia and Xellos. The REAL ship as was born out by events was and ALWAYS will be Filia and Gilis.
Dunno, but this season interests me more than the others... but that is probably because I am absolute furry trash and this season has some nice furry (and scaley) bait in it. well that and despite never watching slayers before, the plot and backstory to it is actually surprisingly close to some stuff of my own I've been working at for years now... which, in retrospect, is probably more bad than its good, as my ideas are not as original as I once thought T_T
I was there when TRY was new. I'm old. And I was an adult. Again.. I'm old. My experience is that people who got into Slayers with TRY loved it and consider it as good as the rest. Those who got into it with Slayers OG and/or Slayers NEXT liked it at first watch, then less and less with every rewatch, until the differences between the other 2/3 of the show became untennable. I liked TRY every time I watched it.. but I can see why other fans kinda got over it. The villains are pointless. Seriously, what's their names? And why do you remember them? Gaav, Fibrizo, Rezo.. all of those chars are memorable. Valgaav is memorable. But this was made during the ANGST!!! era of anime (See: original FMA), and it shows. It's not bad.. anyone who says it's BAD is just... demanding a lot. But it's not as compelling a narrative as NEXT, and it lacks core elements like world building and recurring guest characters. Philia is fine. Valgaav is... not, sorry. He's just a hot boy who has the sadge.
Also if it hits her opponent she'll kill theme even if there a high ranking God? Then to top it all off her sister is such a better slayer that she didn't even consider she surpassed her sister?
Shabranigdo proved the Giga Slave can be deflected and blocked. Anyone strong enough to knock it away will easily beat her. This is taking an Lord of Nightmares appearance out of the question, of course. What happened in the finale of Next was lightning in a bottle.
Slayers Next was the peak of the franchise. Try has some good ideas, like expanding on the world (Hell Master's barrier going down meant more adventures...or so we thought), but instead we got a pretty dull experience. Valgaav and Filia were the main focus this time, with the Slayers being second fiddle. And omg, Xellos ruins everything with his trolling presence. It serves no purpose. Plus, Slayers Try tends to take itself too seriously. The perfect balance of humor and adventure is gone. Instead we get occasional humor with a lot of boring exposition and drama. Gone are the days when we got nothing but comedy, and when the time was right, we'd get that threatening villain bringing everything to an exciting climax. The first movie with Joyrock, season one with Shabranigdo and the Lord of Nightmares climax in Next are the best examples. Try does shine with it's opening Breeze, and closing Don't be Discouraged. They're fantastic! But there's not much else, and by the time Try is reached, you feel like the series has run out of steam. In retrospect, Try is better than the abortion known as Revolution/Evolution-R, but that's not saying much.
Don't get me wrong Slayers Try is a good season and I really enjoyed it but I think it's a bit anticlimactic Slayers Next I think was a really good way to end the original series
Why can't I dismiss this season for what it is, a weak season? Let's say the Golden dragons as shown here are the opposing force to monsters Xellos represents... wait, where are the monsters Xellos represent again? Ah yes, they're the actual "Sir Not Appearing in this Series". One Weathervane can not stand in for an entire faction: "He stands for all of them". Really, Xellos?! Where he stands right now is not going to be where he stands in five minutes. That's Xellos and you can not build thematic resonance off of the guy, he's too self serving even as he serves his Mistress. But you certainly can ... TRY.
IT'S SO ANNOYING this video is a product of passion and effort and yet it's success is determined by hidden numbers on a stupid algorithm. I KNOW people would want to watch it, and yet I can't understand why this channel doesn't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers at least
Yeah, I finished watching the Next review... And I looked at subs and watches and was flabbergasted.
This is quality content about quality content.
@Jared Bruno appreciate your input, now fuck off
Definitely. He deserves more recognition for his work.

Xellos trolling Filia gives me life.
Probably my favorite dynamic in the series alongside the frenemies dynamic that Lina and Naga have.
I seriously expected you to say "and Lina and Gourry going back to being pigs." for some reason at the end.
Out of the 3, TRY is my favorite. I like Philia's inclusion to the party and balancing out the chaotic energy from the whole group. Her interactions with Xellos is pure gold
I really like Slayers Try, even for all its fault and how uneven it is. Thank you kindly for making this!

I'm so glad your using clips from the English dub! Its so DAMN FUNNY! Personally I love Slayers Try, though I never got to read the light novels...

I wonder if you'll review the lost universe anime at some point
Man just about everyone from pokemon has voiced this series lol
Because both of them are dubbed in New York
I was never a fan of the Slayers dub but all the fox men being Cockney is oddly hilarious to me.

What is the music you use in the intro? Love your work, thanks mate!

Yup mimoko kikuchi glass no sogen is the original track

Fillia is voiced by Tara Sands
2:20 wait really!? I am glad I am a anime only it would be weird they disappeared permanently I like Amelia and Zelgadis
Are you going to review the other Slayers episodes or the ova and movie?
Gonna do the OAV series? Hope so :)
Show love for the music!!! 💕
Wow Amelia is acting like I did in college when I saw a friend from high school
Good edited video. I disagree with you saying that it's a good thing that they do not progress their characters.
Gonna make a review for 2000s Slayers anime ?
15 years is my cutoff date so wait until 2023
@@KaiserBeamz I hope I'll watch it under a new government xd
@@KaiserBeamz What about Shojo Kakumei Utena ?

Tara sands really stole the entire performance as Fillia!
More like *next try* amirite
Wait, how overpowered are slayers? Doesn't lina have a spell that is a Russian roulette between the universe, and her opponent?
Also if it hits her opponent she'll kill theme even if there a high ranking God? Then to top it all off her sister is such a better slayer that she didn't even consider she surpassed her sister?
Sorry, I had to break up the comment. RUclips was being a baby about it.
Shabranigdo proved the Giga Slave can be deflected and blocked. Anyone strong enough to knock it away will easily beat her. This is taking an Lord of Nightmares appearance out of the question, of course. What happened in the finale of Next was lightning in a bottle.
So no more Slayers videos, ah?

Please now lost universe!!!!!

Ugh i can understand why the fendom has mix feels about this season.
And yes it's the best and the mhe .
TRY.
I keep coming to this video hoping this guy will change my mind but I just really didn't like TRY.
I thought it was pretty good.
