You came in what I'd call the middle period of US fandom .. back when Slayers came out, the only way to get it was either fansub or the nascent digital fansubs being passed around in MPEG1 / VCD format. I used to go to anime cons in the early /mid 90s specifically to get fansubs, because there were boiler rooms at the cons with dozens of VHS VCR stacks owned by the clubs that would be trading tapes with each other.

Slayers used to be my favorite Anime show back in the 90s! I'm surprised I just forgot how important it was for me. I guess that with the hyper saturation of great anime shows during the 2000s I lost track of one of my favorites (I blame Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Alchemist). Slayers alongside the Shining Force games solidified in my mind how fantasy series in general should look. I still remember the first time I played D&D 3.5 thinking "Oh, so this is like Slayers!". It even influenced the first D&D one shots and campaings that I homebrewed: I draw a lot from plots, worldbuilding and characters from Slayers when writing them! I'm gonna rewatch the entire thing, maybe in Japanese this time (Growing up I watched the Latin american dub, which was pretty good back then!). Amazing video! very well put and great to hear while I work. Actually, the voice recasts weren't done due to any "poor reception" of it, it was done because they only did the first batch of episodes, with the intent of airing it on a tv network, then the deal fell through and the production of the show went on a long hiatus. After the hiatus ended and they decided to just finish it up as a direct to VHS show, they attempted to bring back the cast, but several of them could not be contacted, or did not answer. That is why they were replaced, it had nothing to do with any perception of quality.

Slayers was one of the first shows I watched via streaming and as an early anime fan; it was also an early favorite. Perhaps one day I'll introduce it to my brothers.
There really is something about that first season of Slayers. I haven't watched much anime, but Slayers roped me in from the first episode. As much as I think the series perfected itself with Next, the first season still just has a certain charm to it. The lower budget, looser animation just does something for me. Despite the low budget, everything feels so expressive. I just love it. This was a great video that really encapsulates what makes the first season so fun.
i really want to watch this because it seems like it has bags of charm, i'm quite picky/particular when it comes to character designs/styles etc. especially when it gets past the mid 90s (there's only a few animes i like post 1995ish) - i just skipped through KB's vid on 'next' and 'try' to sus out how the art style evolved and alas i was (as i expected to be) disappointed (no dig on anyone that like it or those series in general, just a picky preference of mine i have like i said) - i just wish the first half of this series had as strong a dub (and with the same cast) as the second half - then i reckon it'd be perfect and seems like potentially half the show is wasted potential with how the first half of the first series was dubbed
uhhh ok so i just watched the first 15 mins of both KB's vid on next and try and, i take it back: both of those look like they similarly have bags of charm and now definitely want to watch those too (i won't finish watching KB's vids on them until after i've seen the series to avoid spoilers). How S1 looks according to this vid still ticks my box and looks the best for my particular taste/preference for older anime, but all 3 series look great and can't wait to get thru em 👍
This is pretty much one of the only sub only animes for me. I disagree on your opinion of Hayashibara's Lina. I think it's her best character she's done. She barely mumbles a few lines as Rei, so I don't know why that would be considered her best role. I think the Japanese cast really work well together in Slayers. I tried watching the dub starting in episode 14. It's weird, but there's a lot of dead air where there is acting in the Japanese version. it stuck out to me in a few spots and I switched the audio back and forth to make sure it wasn't in my head.
Would you ever consider disclosing your top ten or 3x3 or whatever for your favorite anime? Your videos have been so insightful and agreeable so far that simply hearing you speak positively of something piques my interest.
I'm thinking about doing a Top 25 favorite anime, but that's gonna be saved for a special occasion. I want to make it a big event, so be patient. Good things come to those who wait.
I still love Get Along after all these years. My first encounter with the Slayers franchise was Slayers the Motion Picture and I missed Naga... err... I mean Princess Not-Appearing-In-This-Anime... as a prominent character of the party ever after. I loved her dynamic with Lina. It's been years now so I don't remember, but we never got a real confirmation of who that certain living armor might have been in the anime, right? :P Though it wasn't the same anyways.
OMG My first anime ever alongside Ranma 1/2 and the Wanderers of El Hazard! When I was a little kid, I used to pretend to be 5 different characters: Sailor Venus, Ran from GALS!, Starfire from Teen Titans, Kiara from the Lion King 2 (I wasnt a horse girl or wolf girl or even a warrior cats girl...I was a lion girl *cringes*) and finally...Lina Inverse! 7 or 8 year-old me had the entire Dragon Slave and Ragna Blade chant memorized lmao. Next and Try I had the full DVD set and were the only ones I watched to completion, but my dad had some VHS tapes of the one with Naga in it. I remember so many days rewatching so many scenes and bringing my friend over and the two of us would run around pretending to be Lina and Filia until dinnertime. I miss those times. Simpler, just escaping to another world in my head.
Hello fellow kids. I to, was a child of the 90's. A child of commercials for the Hairagami on International Channel, and unsubbed anime in part thanks to IC. I was always into it thanks to Toonami. But IC was the door opener to a different language. That is how I became a fucking degenerate weeb in training.
I first saw this anime when I was in middle school and it's been my favorite ever since. I've always loved the art style (even when the budget shows), the characters, and the fascinating world. I know the one scene early on where Lina is enchanting drags but I always loved it. It gave the world a lot of character and was really atmospheric to me. Best ragtag group of heros(ish) ever!
Lina Inverse is one of the best anime heroines of the ‘90’s that isn’t a FUCKING shojo girl, there are reasons that the entirety of Slayers is No#1 on my anime top ten list.
I agree. Plus with the way the lore, plot and storylines are. They can go on for a long time. They just need something to hit main stream and they will most likely continue. Global Advertising and marketing is what this company lacked for this series.
I just got the whole series on dvd, and i just couldnt decide wether to watch it dubbed or subbed. The main issue being, as i kept hearing Lina's voice, all i could hear was Amy Rose. Thankfully, that stopped after watching just a few episodes.
I love how Naga the serpent doesn't get any love in the actual TV anime even reviewers who cover it just completely crossed over the fact that Amelia's sister is actually Lena's greatest freaking rival ever. The one the only the beautiful The Majestic the lady in the leather bikini with a bazangas I just don't stop to the point where they snap her top. Naga the white serpent. Now queue up her theme song pheromones Dancing in The Wind, and bask in the glory.
I still remember watching Ranma tits on televisión(i recall haposaai in the bath with her 😂), it was crazy ANd somehow normal. Also, what an introducción to redheads with Lina
Si recuerdo eso, ni siquiera las disculpas años despues de esa pseudoperiodista en Mexico quitan el mal sabor de boca de lo que paso al anime en los 90s.
Quality video I watched it as a kid on TV at A+/Animax (the only cartoon channel we had at the time switched to hungarian dubbed anime content at 20:00) Couldn't ask for a better time
I think they should have redudded Zelgadis and Amelia in the first 13 episodes with Crispin Freeman and Veronica Taylor for better continuity. overall original Slayers 7.5/10
@@napasenseigaming nothing, cos wrong with the voice actors. It’s just than in the Slayers (tv) dub, I heard these voices actors from the dubs of Pokémon and Yugioh before and these are one of the best dubs in anime that New York has ever produced.
I don't understand why do you call this animation bad. It's just standart Anime animation, like it mostly is. I mean, Anime animation conventions are not the same as Western Animation conventions - Anime animation is basically Hanna Barbera animnation, but with more dynamic posing. Fluid animation is something saved for so-called "Sakuga" moments. Well, i mostly watch old anime, and one of main appeals of Anime to me, is how you can create illusion of movement without doing much of it. I love it, it inspired me to make my own animation someday... Also, i mostly watch old anime, i rarely watch modern anime... and well, modern anime animation makes me sea-sick XD (Even back when i was a kid, i prefered animation from TV Disney toons, rarhter than Feature Length Disney animation which was too fluid for me for my eyes to catch up) Yes, imagine that, there's people who prefer static animation with lots of still-frames to fluid animation.
I need to watch this it skipped me by and I think id love it. It’s weird to me that ppl see that the budgeted stuff is bad or don’t hold up, like most modern shows still use these teqnuiqes and they work it’s not bad. Stills never bother me nor does re use if it’s done well it’s good .
When I was a teen anime was so expensive I was limited in what I could watch. As an adult I could afford anime but couldn't find a lot of the old stuff. Now the old anime is either priced out of reach or straight-up unavailable. I feel like all this old anime should just straight-up be free to watch. Copyright should just be allowed to run out and this stuff should all be posted online for free. If I haven't gotten a chance to watch something in over 20 years, I feel they should at least try to make it a little easier for me now.
Thats weird, I feel the old stuff is cheaper than it has ever been to get. I can buy brand new never opened tapes for only $2-5. This series in particular is easy to find complete in boxed sets. Given how cheap it is to watch the old stuff on their original formats I don't even stream stuff anymore
it being free means there would be no incentive for companies to put in serious work to fully remaster these gorgeous old school hand cel animated and film photographed shows and movies and for them to be provided in glorious HD and have the artistry and craftmanship put into them be presented at its full potential - granted some animes won't get remastered and some that do or will won't get remastered well (and granted a low budget show *might* not benefit from a good remastering as much as something that was originally produced with a much higher budget, but i still reckon it would to an extent justifying the cost of purchasing the blu ray or digital release), but i'd rather the animes have the potential for future remastering and full HD release to market than no effort be put into remastering and the only copies available being crappy DVD quality (which themselves have almost certainly been ripped and uploaded somewhere online)
22:14 Yeah, this "giga slave" spell bugged me on a recent rewatch. They can call it whatever they want here but isn't what they're showing later described as the Ragna Blade? Then there's the term itself; Dragon Slave was explained in the show as a degradation of "Dragon Slayer" so Slave/Slayer is fine but then "Giga Slayer" is weird. It's like a spell created by that one guy who knows "decimate" really means to reduce to one tenth. ... oh, so it'd be perfect for a DnD spell...
That's not Ranga Blade, it's Giga Slave cast through the Sword of Light. Even though they look similar, they're completely diffirent. As for the name - Lina initially created the spell as a modification of Dragon Slave, so the name doesn't come from "Giga Slayer" , but "stronger Dragon Slave".
I learned about Slayers from an account on twitter, & I decided to give it a shot; but for some weird reason, *both* times I torrented a complete collection, even in the one that advertised itself as "English translated", the only seasons that *were* in fact dubbed were Slayers Revolution & Slayers Evolution R; all the stuff that came before was all in *Japanese* , & didn't even have *any* subtitles. If anyone knows where I could torrent the complete collection where *everything* is English dubbed, I'd *very* much appreciate it if you told me.
Love Slayers since the early 2000s (I was very little when it first came out), but I hardly disagree on the dubs vs. subs issue. The original VAs are leagues better than the dubs, and it's particularly noticeable when comparing the voices of Lina and Amelia.
Finally, someone who agrees with my dang near 30-year old hot take. While I love Megumi Hayashibara's work, and think she did a fantastic job on Lina, I really feel like Lisa Ortiz's portrayal of Lina to be much more accurate to the character, especially after reading just about every English-translated piece of media available. As a whole, I might still prefer the sub as the voice acting is more consistently good across the board, however.
I honestly think Kanzaka made the fantasy names hard to pronounce just in case it made it to an anime. Imagine the poor voice actors having to learn to smoothly say Zelgadis or Shabranigdo.
Hey guys I have the 3 seasons in one box set for this show. For some reason the clips in this video are better rez is that because of editing or are the individual season better quality.
Slayers was also my all-time favourite anime for a very long time (it is still the second right now), and I agree with your perceptions about the characters and the humour factor, also basically about everything. Besides that, the Hungarian dub was also really well-made (which is very rare though) so I also watched its dubbed version. By the way, I highly recommend you a bit less well-known fantasy, Violinist of Hameln (1996-7) (if you haven't seen it yet), especially the TV version. It is very much different from the original manga, but I preferred the Tv version because it was quite dark, yet it had deeper and more complex characters, therefore it got me totally immersed in the plot. It is way more serious than Slayers (altough the manga has the same amount of gags as Slayers), but as a thought provoking and mature fantasy it gripped me (a huge Slayers fan) so much. Also I still enjoy Slayers, but I was 14 when I found it and it was perfect for that age, however, as an adult, Violinist of Hameln was more pleasing for me as a dark and filosophical 90's fantasy anime.

The Slayers movies are not part of the Slayers series. Lina did not recognize the Sword of Light in the movie and series. Also Lina is already wearing the magic boosters.
They might not have had all the audio files needed to make a new dub track. I believe the 1985 dirty pair series was left undubbed for the longest time because of lost assets, from my understanding.
Ahhhh....my favorite Slayers! It's dubbing that made sense and I love the story. Also it's called in my house D&D on Crack! Basically the DM goes on vacation and leaves his wife in charge of the group.

i really want to watch this because it seems like it has bags of charm, i'm quite picky/particular when it comes to character designs/styles etc. especially when it gets past the mid 90s (there's only a few animes i like post 1995ish) - i just skipped through KB's vid on 'next' and 'try' to sus out how the art style evolved and alas i was (as i expected to be) disappointed (no dig on anyone that like it or those series in general, just a picky preference of mine i have like i said) - i just wish the first half of this series had as strong a dub (and with the same cast) as the second half - then i reckon it'd be perfect and seems like potentially half the show is wasted potential with how the first half of the first series was dubbed
uhhh ok so i just watched the first 15 mins of both KB's vid on next and try and, i take it back: both of those look like they similarly have bags of charm and now definitely want to watch those too (i won't finish watching KB's vids on them until after i've seen the series to avoid spoilers). How S1 looks according to this vid still ticks my box and looks the best for my particular taste/preference for older anime, but all 3 series look great and can't wait to get thru em 👍
“Koala.......”
Got you beat, had it on VHS, the whole serious...😂
My favorite anime of all time.
What about GS Mikami?
@@KeyleeTamirian I said one of the best… don’t know GS Mikami.
@@cb8655 Well, Ghost Sweeper Mikami is like Lina, but much, much greedier. ruclips.net/video/nhvWZ5pGPK8/видео.html&ab_channel=AmiLyngstad
this series needs to continued like its novel series
I agree. Plus with the way the lore, plot and storylines are. They can go on for a long time. They just need something to hit main stream and they will most likely continue. Global Advertising and marketing is what this company lacked for this series.
There's a light novel series.
Because of this video I just bought a vhs player and the vhs tapes to this anime and gonna watch this anime like they did in the 1900s lol
Omg i grew up watching The Slayers i was little so i don't remember much about the story but the opening theme is nostalgic.
I just got the whole series on dvd, and i just couldnt decide wether to watch it dubbed or subbed. The main issue being, as i kept hearing Lina's voice, all i could hear was Amy Rose. Thankfully, that stopped after watching just a few episodes.
I hear FF8's Blue Fields at the 23 min mark!
Doodlebug Four Also Timber music at 13:30
I love how Naga the serpent doesn't get any love in the actual TV anime even reviewers who cover it just completely crossed over the fact that Amelia's sister is actually Lena's greatest freaking rival ever. The one the only the beautiful The Majestic the lady in the leather bikini with a bazangas I just don't stop to the point where they snap her top. Naga the white serpent. Now queue up her theme song pheromones Dancing in The Wind, and bask in the glory.
Fun fact: both Ranma 1/2 and Slayers aired on tv in Latin America. Yes there was a moral panic over Ranma
Love this series, its a blast!
Quality video
I watched it as a kid on TV at A+/Animax (the only cartoon channel we had at the time switched to hungarian dubbed anime content at 20:00)
Couldn't ask for a better time
My anime renaissance came about in much the same way. I didn't watch Utena until I discovered it here on RUclips over the lockdown.
I think they should have redudded Zelgadis and Amelia in the first 13 episodes with Crispin Freeman and Veronica Taylor for better continuity. overall original Slayers 7.5/10
Redub from the start?
@@dwainsimmons3447 nah the original dub isn’t really bad enough to worrent it it’s overall really good
@@napasenseigaming it’s got voice actors from the Pokémon and Yugioh dubs.
@@dwainsimmons3447 so what what’s wrong with that
@@napasenseigaming nothing, cos wrong with the voice actors. It’s just than in the Slayers (tv) dub, I heard these voices actors from the dubs of Pokémon and Yugioh before and these are one of the best dubs in anime that New York has ever produced.
Am I hearing the Chrono Trigger's ost (at 6:37)?0o
Instant like and sub. I was sold on your presentation and choice of subject. You = Panache
30 dollar dvds... oh you summer child. Try the 2 episode per vhs tape days.
Also, i mostly watch old anime, i rarely watch modern anime... and well, modern anime animation makes me sea-sick XD (Even back when i was a kid, i prefered animation from TV Disney toons, rarhter than Feature Length Disney animation which was too fluid for me for my eyes to catch up)
Yes, imagine that, there's people who prefer static animation with lots of still-frames to fluid animation.
good job, very informative.
FF8 music along with Slayers. Yeah, subscribed
This video was great, had a great time listening to it at work
Love the review!
Imagine if Peter Jackson were to direct and translate this over Lord of the Rings.
Hey I love your work dude :) keep it up. I loved this anime growing up and glad to see it kinda holds up. Subbed and will keep going.
That cheeseburger line was so out of nowhere it did get a chuckle.
CHICKEN. Fantastic review
My first anime was Guyver... when I was single digits... fml... I got in so much trouble for watching Appleseed when I was 11...
I enjoy the ones with Naga, it's generally better writing.
Calling Zelgadis grouchy is an understatement, he's downright mean and borderline evil
A E S T H E T I C
I like nuku nuku in your intro
I think this was my first anime...
Love Slayers since the early 2000s (I was very little when it first came out), but I hardly disagree on the dubs vs. subs issue. The original VAs are leagues better than the dubs, and it's particularly noticeable when comparing the voices of Lina and Amelia.
I had a crush on Lina when I was a kid lol
Los Justicieros fue increible ❤
I'm sorry but Zelgadis isnt half Demon. Hes 1/3 human, 1/3 golem and 1/3 demon.
I love this video I grew up with Slayers wile all my friends were watching SpongeBob it will always hole a special place for me
Finally, someone who agrees with my dang near 30-year old hot take.
16:13 yes
She became a dota 2 character. 😄😄
Hey guys I have the 3 seasons in one box set for this show. For some reason the clips in this video are better rez is that because of editing or are the individual season better quality.
Next year??? Ugh I want it now!
Classic anime, really wish we could get more seasons and/or movies after all these years.
Slayers is my all time favorite anime series especially NEXT, TRY and REVOLUTION
I'm honestly not as against the dubbing for the early half of this season myself. In my personal opinion, it's just part of the show's character.
Lina is the single best dubbed character in all of anime
Linas dub actress lisa ortiz did such a great job
Hold up is that Brock!!!!
Lina reminds me of Excel
Hahaha yeah justo a Lot less crazy
MAN, I LOVED Slayers! I feel like I'm the only one who ever watched it.

This chronology is convoluted worse than the Bible, for fuck's sake
The Slayers movies are not part of the Slayers series. Lina did not recognize the Sword of Light in the movie and series. Also Lina is already wearing the magic boosters.
4 episodes of anime for 30? Man, I remember 2 vhs episodes for 24.99
The voice actress for Lina sounds like Amy Rose from Sonic X. Is that just me?
Same actress
Not under 4kids
Why DIDN'T they rerecord the first half?? I can't even watch it these days, I'm so used to Crispin and Veronica and I can NOT go back.
I've only ever watch the sub version of this show.
Nice opening.
>30 dollar dvds.
>not realising the horriblness of 50 dollar vhs with 3 episodes.
Fml
The serune arc is the hilarious and I disagree one should skip it.
Thank god i watched all of the slayers series and movies on japanese
The English dub is better than the original Japanese version.
I prefer the latinamerican versión 🤷♀️
i love me some Slayers, literally one of the best shows ive ever seen.
Gourry makes me think of Allen Schezar but ordered off Temu.
