I have a 2013 2.2 Puma. 145K on the clock. Clutch replaced and a few other minor things. Religious maintenance every 10K and Land Rover specialist mechanic in Southport QLD. Had many luxury cars from new (X5, Q7) but no other car gives me so much pleasure as my Defender. Daily driver. As you say, you either love them or hate them. But one thing which stands out is the LR Defender community. Always helping out with issues and just a great bunch of people. Feel privileged to be part of this tribe.
Hello Warren from the UK. Interesting video to compare notes. I've a very early 2007 puma 130 tdci HD, it's done 153,000 miles, and I'm a fencing contractor, so it's been my work truck, often tows a large plant trailer with a 2.5 ton digger on it and had no towing issues. Been extremely happy with it. Issues I've had is 2 egr valves, 2 sets of rear wheel bearings, as the spacer causes issues, replaced with 2 locking nuts (old style). Electrical wise, had to disconnect central locking as it used to kick in the immobiliser, just take relay out! Air con rad finns broke up. And electric window wires used to break. I'd go back to sliding windows. Here in UK rust is a massive issue, so it's been sold a few months back, I owned it from new, never had to modify it. Twin coils are standard on rear on a HD. Standard shocks and run 3 sets of cooper stt. Running a dmax at moment and its half the truck. But I have a Grenadier on order. Enjoying the content. Regards, Ben
Thanks for that great comment Ben, you would have been sorry to see the Defender go but as a work vehicle, they need to be updated to minimise down time of course. I believe a common issue with the 2.4 Puma is the clutch, mine is still original but now rattles on idle so probably time for replacement. I did have one issue I forgot to mention in the video and that was the lower intercooler hose rubs on an exposed bolt (of course!) and it eventually causes a tear/hole, so when pressure builds you lose the turbo and are down to just the 2.4 non turbocharged and that is a big difference LOL. So I had replaced mine with an 'armoured' mesh hose, and a stand off bracket to avoid the bolt in question. That's another issue to keep an eye on, won't strand you roadside but will take the wind out of your sails especially if you're towing. A roadside solution is a lot of duct tape to get home. All the best mate, love the look of the Grenadier, the vehicle we all know that Land Rover should have built. Happy Motoring mate! Warren.
Mate, you’re a man after my own heart. I’ve had Landies since 1971 (series 2a and 3 long and shorty, a Rangie, two Discoveries and an LJ 50 in the mix) and I love them for the same reason. A simplistic tool to get you there and back. I’ve just bought a Perentie 6x6 table top for a camper conversion.
Had a series 3 once with the holden 186 motor in it. Bonnet tools ,took the roof off etc. Got looks everywhere i went. Great old 4wd and went heaps of places. I certainly would love a defender. Ive also had a few toyotas as well.
I drive a 2015 TD4, one of the latest. 180 km commute to work every day. About 65,000-70,000km a year. It has now run 512,000km and apart from 3 clutches and one new transfer case, I have not had any breakdowns so far. I've installed 2 ARB Airlockers and I'm regularly out and about in rough terrain. Engine gets fresh oil and filter every 10,000 km. The rest including manual and transfer case every 25,000 km. I've certainly spent more money on oil than on new tires over the years - but it thanks me for that and runs absolutely reliably. He will soon be getting new injectors as a prophylactic measure. Of course, it also has normal wear and tear, such as wheel bearings, brakes, etc., but that's all within limits. the most important thing is simple - don't buy cheap spare parts and oils! I've also been driving since 320,000 with the larger intercooler and an increase in performance to 170hp

Warren I have to say you always do a most informative video, much appreciated. One of the things I love about your country is the fact that many vehicles were offered with diesel power trains, which are well suited to off roading. It sounds like the rig has been a good one for you, and most likely will keep going for many more kms without serious issue. I currently have an 05 Dodge pick up 4x4 Cummins diesel with 325,000 miles still going strong.....but parts do eventually wear out. It is currently on its' 3rd automatic transmission, and its' second ECM. Other than that just normal items: water pump, hoses, brakes, filters, etc. Cheers to you and Coleen, I hope to see more on this channel as time goes by.

Yes the Australian off road and touring market is dominated by diesel engines, so much so that many brands don't even offer a petrol version simply because it wouldn't sell. Diesel fuel is available all over the country even in the remotest Outback outpost - and it is safer to transport in jerrycans of course. Plus like in the US we are doing big distances to get anywhere, the kind of thing well suited to a diesel powertrain, they love working hard! All the best mate, happy motoring in that 05 Dodge! Great video, i have a 2009 swb Puma xs its been my favourite out of all vehicles i have had in 40 years driving, before this was a Range Rover Sport supercharged for 5 years but i much prefer this Defender, so much character, It has been very reliable only replaced the egr unit and that's it. Hate the look of the so called new Defender.
Don't discount the new Defender until you've driven one. The basic 90 version on coil springs/steel wheels with the 3.0 diesel is a lovely vehicle and does retain some character unlike a lot of modern vehicles. Of course it's not an old Defender but it's definitely worth a look.
Hi Warren, Thankyou for a great review. I have a 2.4 Puma as well. I have had a few problems with mine over the years... had to replace the clutch, upgrade the back axles, and a failed EGR valve. Apart from it's great off road ability stock! ( unlike most other 4x4s on the market) good payload, 4 cylinder engine ( cheap rego) good fuel economy ( cross the Simpson desert on 70 liters, standard tank). These are all points that make it a great 4x4 to own.
Can't agree more with your assessment Jeff, actually ours is still on the original clutch but it does rattle now and then at idle so maybe that's the next replacement item. All the 2.4s seem to have the same issues so there is plenty of help on forums and RUclips. All in all though, for a vehicle of it's age now all these things are reasonable. Awesome video,I had fantastic 2.4 90.@ 70000 km had a engine knock which cost me a fare bit to have checked by diesel specialist,brand new injectors installed. They did not solve issue.now gone . Now looking at 2.2 2014 110 as I have had the landy desease for years. I also was a Toyota owner 1st up.but Landrover is the goto for me hands down.I drive new Toyota v8s everyday at work and they have their issues as The parent company is very very tuff on issue "media"releases regarding them. I grew up with Toyotas and can honestly say that my mux is a lot better..😂. I did drive a v8 discovery for a while and I was really impressed with it. My wife put the foot down and I couldn’t buy one. Like all vehicles you grow to love them and the haters will hate them. Great insight warren. Cheers .
Mine is the same year and the same colour, it just has a white roof. I've had mine for 2 years. MY gear lever is still in once piece. I hold it lower down to put it into reverse. Hopefully that extends the life a bit. And I also have a net between the front seats to put stuff in. Great minds think alike!
I've had a 2.2 Puma Defender since new in 2013. It's now done about 260, 000 k. I don't off-road and consider myself to be a coscientious owner and driver. It has had about six serious breakdowns from oil pump in the first year, through turbo, water pump, clutch, gearbox, and now head gasket. Most breakdowns have involved recovery and been more than inconvenient. It is currently waiting repair at my local garage. So much for reliability and ease of repair. Perhaps it was an unlucky 'Friday' product. If, as myself, you no longer want to get your hands dirty and live in the middle of nowhere, it's not easy finding a good garage willing to undertake maintenance or repair work. Perhaps living in rural France is part of that problem. It is far from cheap to run, without even considering the well known grumbles such as banging your elbow, getting hit in the face with flies, water dripping in through the doors and a backdoor that could knock you flying if not careful. I thoroughly love it and can't wait for the two or three weeks to pass before the garagist says it will be ready. It could be a love hate relationship.
Great review, your spot on saying about owning one to understand, parts here in the UK are cheap, it's easy to fix as well (mine is 300tdi), I think a lot of people buy them thinking they're a new Ford, they don't do maintenence and then have grief , They do get under your skin though, I'd compare mine to a steam train, it has a soul, japanese vehicles just don't.

There is steel where the main bulkhead is that caries the windscreen asembly. You can get corosion in time with the two metal being in contact with eachother in time. Aluminium and steeal dont like eachother. I served on some ships that had this problem but they were 50 years old. So youve ti.e yet i guess. Never realised they had ford engines, i used to make the 4 wheel drive units for range rover in uk they had a few problems the early ones split the caceings.
What are everyone’s opinions on whether to go TD5 or Puma, I do see a few Pumas listed for sale with new engines which worries me, is the TD5 the better one to get?
ha, had a 57 series one,a 2 and 2a, 3 110, 2000 disco 2, d4 x 2, the 2 and 2a busted the long axle the 2000 d2 has a great engine , hear it climb on the AUTOBAN, 130 KMH and wadinding knee dee mud Ukraine yes would like yours but the 254 bhp and 600nm of my sdv6 is the besy on road driving experience growing up on steep hill in NZ I do not look at trubble, nice vid mate the d4 is 2600kg are you sure

Just purchased a 2007 PUMA 110, glad to see you are still enjoying yours my hope is to keep it as my primary vehicle for years to come.
We have a 1955 series 1 86 inch and a 2007 defender 90. Both are amazing vehicles. It’s all about the ladder chassis

I think you hit the nail on the head, it is simply not like any other vehicle, love it (which I do with my 300Tdi Station Wagon) or hate it.

Nice Puma. Mine 2011 had a engine major failure due to bad fuel injectors at about 155.000. Engine rebuilt and all fine now. Congrats from Brazil.

100% new. It’s not a toorak tractor. I have not heard that saying in years. I love my 80series landy but it’s time for something new

Using steel or stainless straight into the alloy will cause to to corrode
