Welcome to another episode of 'EASY & DREAMY' Guitar Chords. This time I show you how the music artist Grouper and the Johnny Marr of the band The Smiths use the Open D Tuning D A D F# A D on guitar for instant dreaminess. This video was powered by Skillshare. Literally what I've been doing for the past 5 years. The amazing thing about this type of tuning is that you can free your 3rd, 4th and pinky fingers and let them explore additional notes out of the standard major chords. Not only additional notes but also it enables doubling notes (same notes for multiple strings which create beautiful harmonics). I can't write any new material without alternate tunings anymore!
Thanks Kenneth for this guitar tutorial. My two favourite guitars are, my Crafted in Japan, Jazzmaster. Upgraded with Lollar pickups, and my standard, Crafted in Japan, Lake Placid Blue Jaguar. Johnny Marr and Kevin Shields are my favourite guitarists by far. They're absolute geniuses.
I just started playing guitar about 2 months ago, Also got into rock around 3 months before that and I never understood what the type of music I was listening to and now that I know its “showgaze” I’m in love because this whole time I thought everything was off standard tuning and it was very difficult to learn anything but this makes it so much easier to play guitar it’s like a shortcut lol
I just checked out that new grouper album! This is super helpful to get your head out of scale boxes. I think Johnny marr said that „unlearning what you’re doing with tunings“ helps working with your ears only 🤙🏻
Thank you Kenneth! I have one of my guitars (my Jag( tuned to open D. This video was super helpful and inspiring! I always look forward to your content. Thank you!
I like to tune D as 75/150/300, A as 112.5/225/450, and depending on whatever other notes I might use, 187.5 for an F#, 200 for G, and other more even intervals. Playing around with being “out of tune” can give interesting tones.
Have you ever heard of a band called GIFT? They are still a fairly new band. The song Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is tuned DADDAD. So is the slide guitar in the song Freebird. So is the song Name by the goo goo dolls.
Loved this video brah... been just looking up songs that I wanted to play and found your Chanel and realized that I want to learn more about shoegaze thanks man!
@@berlinshoegazer came here to say this. Johnny capoed it to Open E, though if I remember correctly he plays it in Open D these days when he performs it live to accommodate his voice
Nice lesson. I'm a bass player and yet to play with tuning variations. Just happy to have chorus and flange. But I'm curious to see if Cocteau Twins or Autumn's Grey Solace use any of these techniques as well. But I do remember hearing that the original guitarist for the B-52s came up with several tunings for different songs. But I'm sure it's just a good excuse to buy more guitars.
Check out Chris Whitley’s music. He died in 2009. He used some different tunings Check out Jeff Buckley’s music. He died in ‘98. He used some alternate tunings but it was the way he used the fretboard and the way he wrote songs that was really creative. And his voice.
Headmasters ritual is actually an open e tuning not open d I found that out trying to play what you were showing me fairly similar but it doesn't have the same open notes

Ty this is awesome, new tunings are amazing for writing new songs :D (Also that Jag is sick)

I love Grouper, thank you for spotlighting her work.
Used this tuning since 1985!

That sound really cool and exciting. I have to try that.

Really great video man, you are a great teacher!
Great tips as always my dude, Keep it up
Thank you. I reall try to keep it up as good as I can. 😄
Dude… you’re badass. 🤝
Really cool greetings from Scotland! 🏴
I haven’t tried this tuning, but I’ve used the very similar DADGAD, which is used a lot in some folk music styles.
Dude that is tight!!!
Thanks man. Love this tuning.
@@berlinshoegazer I write music for my band Vintage Runaways.
And I'm going to start using this tuning
Excellent video. I will definitely give this tuning a try 👍
Sick frames dude
Thanks I really appreciate this video

Hey John, that is so cool. Thanks for letting me know and for the kind words.
I’ve always played Headmaster’s Ritual in open E. Open D obviously works though! Also love the Grouper reference.
I guess you played it right. Johnny Marr may have used a Capo and then it becomes an open E tuning.

Great lesson. Greetings again from Trinidad…
Thank you so much. Greetings back from Berlin. 💜

Aww, makes me so happy if it's useful for you. Thanks for watching.
Danke brudi
love your videos!
Thanks so much, Dominick.
Finally some 1 covering grouper work !!( also was that riff from the beginning deer hunter ?)
No, it was pretty much jammed. But possibly Deer Hunter are playing similar riffs in one of their songs.
Check out Chris Whitley’s music. He died in 2009. He used some different tunings
Check out Jeff Buckley’s music. He died in ‘98. He used some alternate tunings but it was the way he used the fretboard and the way he wrote songs that was really creative. And his voice.
I know both of them. Love their stuff.
Just found your channel! Really cool stuff. Subscribed!
We can all thank Morrissey for Johnny Marr using alternate tunings 😂
Don't forget the king of alternative tunings, Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine)
Headmasters ritual is actually an open e tuning not open d I found that out trying to play what you were showing me fairly similar but it doesn't have the same open notes
What pedals were you using on the heavy water chord progression at the beginning?
Only my DigiTech Thrash Master pedal into my Fender Princetone 112plus amp. You can also use the Hot Rod by DigiTech. Sounds very much the same.
How come the tiktok link isnt working? im very interested in your tiktok but it says page not found when i click it
I didn't recognize that TikTok has these strange @ in it's address. Is that normal? www.tiktok.com/@berlinshoegazer
What is Grouper?
Apple Cider by beabadoobee is a great song in this tuning :)
I'll check it out. Thanks a lot.
👍
Me: I wonder if this guy like shoegaze?
*Reads channel name*
Me: Oh
Haha. 😄 Well, I certainly like some tunes.
🧛🏼
i love you

Sounds more like Lush to be honest. Great vid. DADGAD is usual considered "the" d tuning .
I believe DADGAD gives you a suspended chord with open strings or a bar, so it’s a bit more unsettling/ambiguous than the D major chord.
@@mooseyard yes but its the standard
