Oh hey it's the video made me want to start recording guitar 5 years ago. Also introduced me to TGUK and all these other bands. Thanks man. Love Persimmon.
4 minute mile is an incredible album. Boy's Life, engine kid, metroschifter, and guilt were other incredible emo bands (all distinct in tone) who released timeless, yet underrated albums way back when .
Thank you Steve. (Steve appreciation post) Im a drummer and Ive been watching your channel ever since I found the math rock genre I know absolutely nothing about guitar cords but nevertheless am truly thankful that people like you can inspire and teach about such a niche music type. Your videos have helped me and my friends figure out our own sound which never would have happened since I always find it hard to find people who break math rock down in the way you do. I only hope for the genre to grow and for you to grow with it :)
Algernon Cadwallader has got to be one of the greatest Emo bands ever. There's so much passion in the music they made, they'll be forever in my heart. ❤
i'm an absolute beginner to guitar (started only a week ago) so there's not much use in me watching these for now but i can't stop!! i love your videos
Hello, and welcome! That's great to know you're watching my videos. You'll be able to get stuck-in once you have the basics of guitar down. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
Tbh I needed this. It’s been too long since I’ve used standard tuning and at this point I’m better with other tunings. It’s great for writing music and unique songs, but if I want to jam on someone else’s guitar without changing tuning I feel like I’m worse than I used to be.
Hey. That's awesome, I think I can go into more detail than this, I see this as kind of scratching at the surface as to what is possible. I have the opposite problem. Haha. Thanks for watching.
Exactly why I stopped fucking with random tunings. I got tired of going above and beyond just to play a song on another guitar. I want to be able to pick up any guitar and just go.
@@chrismontgomery8278 yeah. I play 99% of the time in standard. That's what I prefer. I do however, like trying to write something in different tunings from time to time.
this entire channel resparked me on my love of Emo, Math Rock, Post-Hardcore, and Skramz now that I'm getting a better idea of the techniques and theory behind it. I'm probably gonna binge Fall of Troy, Funeral Diner, and Raein for the next while thanks to you.
A video I didnt know I needed, I only use standard tuning because I think alt tunings are a little overwhelming mainly because there are so many different emo kind of tunings out there. Great lesson as always!

Honestly, I love seeing how much the scene has grown. It's solid stuff.
Best video of yours yet by far for me.. picked up so much from this and have come up with so much just playing off these different chords in only a few hours
Let's Talk About Math Rock it would be awesome to learn some more chords in FACGCE, or some videos of the actual mechanics of tapping, like the proper way to. Either way though keep it up I love all your vids super informative favorite guitar teacher on RUclips
@@chrismatassa8999 Thanks man. Check out the band Standards for some good tapping, the dude in the band, Marcus Mena, I think his name is off the top of my head. He has a tapping compostional tutorial book that's really useful for learning the proper technique.
Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate) uses subtle dissonance often, going to the 7th or in general outlining the tritone in whatever key they're in before resolving it, continuously. Capn Jazz and Carissa's Wierd (intentionally misspelled) are also very good!
Oziel Esparza Love carissa’s wierd, a lot of their songs are tuned down a half step, and they use power chords alot which kinda surprises me since they have such a distinct vibe
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock thank you! I also definitely want to check out some of those bands you mentioned, do you have any specific songs you'd recommend first?
Mate, awesome Video. So stoked that attention is being steered towards the 90’s vein of Emo/ Garage. Had such a beautiful playing aesthetic around that era. Glad to see sum old favourites mentioned. Subscribed.
Great video! Four minute mile was my introduction to the genre as well. It's funny but I have always used these chord forms in my writing, across different bands/styles over the years. It wasn't until watching your video that I realized how much of an influence mid-late 90's emo has had on my writing style. Cheers!
First off, old Coheed is the best. Secondly, there's absolutely no reason that Funeral for a Friend should be a guilty pleasure. Their first EP and first two albums are incredible. Songs like Roses for the Dead and Hospitality are beautiful.
Hello. Coheed are one of my favorite bands. Not too keen on the latest release but that doesn't bother me, they still have plenty of awesome music. I think I prefer hours to casual dressed.
Totally agree, casually dressed and hours have amazing songs...history, she drove me to daytime tv, bend your arms , Juneau and the bside kiss and makeup...matt davies always referenced great bands, dude is into the good stuff) As far as personal fav emo bands (just to name em, if anyone gives a shite) : appleseed cast, elliott, chamberlain, american football , rites of spring and texas is the reason for me 🤘
The new Coheed release is just pretty good to me. I'm not a fan of much '80s rock and especially not the arena rock sound half the songs have. Coheed is my favorite band though and nothing will ever replace IKSSE:3 as my favorite album - but I so badly miss the sound they used to have. It's funny this video popped up when it did because just last week I was thinking about how Second Stage Turbine Blade has a ton of emo chords and arpeggios that I never really thought about before.
Godsend Conspirator, Time Consumer, and Junesong Provision are some of my favorite songs to play, especially Godsend, and like you said, they're full of them. The bridge into the end of Devil in Jersey City also has some great emo influences. That's why it's such a bummer to me that most of their new stuff is far more straightforward with power chords and metal riffs.
brilliant stuff steve - glad to see your recent vids doing so well :) Frame and canvass was a massive one for me, i remember listening to that for the first time when i was about 21 in the back of a van driving back from a gig my band had just played. One of those defining moments really!
Hell yeah, Coheed! Every time I watch one of your videos, I try to hit the sub button again just in case. Also, I was a Sonar user for several years. Your channel is rad.
I was at Braids final show in Chicago in 99 or 2000. They played with Sarge and Alkaline Trio at the Metro. Alkaline Trio were just starting to get popular at that point and was the very fist band to play. I actually went for Alkaline Trio as I was more into Punk at the time, they were where Punk and Emo intersected. Alkaline Trio, The Promise Ring and The Get Up Kids were the gateway bands for me. I became a Braid fan because of that show and even though that was announced as their last show they played one more show in Champaign Urbana where Braid went to college and I made the 3 hour drive with 2 of my friends to see that show as well. Braid got me into many more bands. There was a 5 night show at the Metro for Flower Booking the fall of 2000 and l went for bands like Hey Mercedes, Jets to Brazil, Jimmy Eat World, Joan of Arc and Burning Airlines and became a fan of Don Caballero and The Sea and Cake. That really broadened my interest in music and I became less interested in genres and was more open to older Jazz, Blues and Country as well as post-punk and 80s Alternative and Indie. I think the 2 bands that really defined that jazzy math rock sound early on were Cap N Jazz and Braid. While I love Braid, Cap N Jazz are the band that I still listen too often today. They add alot of Flamenco type rhythms as well and were more chaotic and dynamic to me. Braid was ultra clean and Bob's vocals were sort of naturally compressed. Tim's vocals are like a Jackson Pollock painting; it's a beautiful mess when chaos becomes order. Sorry for the long nostalgic ramblings, I'm 39 and I'm at that point in life where the memory of being young comes to you like flashbacks. Your videos and playing brings me back to those years, music was really alive then and so many great bands played in Chicago during that period. I feel fortunate to have been able to experience it.
Thanks for sharing! You weren't rambling at all. I love reading stories like this, and I really wish I could've experienced those shows and the scene at the time. I think that's what makes it such a nostalgic thing is that it only lasted fro a short while, like any music scene people make themselves part of. I can't say thanks enough to my friends that introduced to bands such as Braid, the get-up kids and so on.
Watching this now, a few of those chords sound personally familiar to me. Like I'm pretty sure I've unknowingly played some of these while brainstorming guitar riffs. I'm just unaware of chord names, so i just choose my finger placement and find whatever sounds good. I only know very minimal music theory, of course lol
Just commented about Races to April on your Colin Phils episode and now seeing this one... info about the guys: originally from Yorktown, VA but the band was really at home in Harrisonburg, VA where I went to school with them at JMU. Amazing guys, their music has had a pretty lasting effect on me. Played a lot of house shows in town, as well as various venues in VA and the surrounding area. Signed to the short lived Tinted Amber Records that if I remember right went under not long after the record came out. Crazy to see someone else still loving that record, it’s fantastic.
That's awesome. I would've loved to have been at one of them shows! I can't remember when exactly I got it but it was back in the Myspace days so a whiles back. Haha. Thanks for the info!
Hi Guy First of all I wanted to thank you for your videos and all your work, we feel that you are passionate and you know how to share your passion :) it's good to know that the emo genre can be perpetuated with channels like yours ! As for emo / screamo/math bands that I would like to make you discover I can quote: _This town needs guns - Animals _American Football _ Castevet (CSTVT) - The echo and the light _Sport - Colors ; Bon voyage _Native - Wrestling Moves _Daïtro - Laisser vivre les squelettes _Totorro - Home Alone _Rooftops - A forest of polarity _Cyclamen - Les Memoires
I know that there's no purpose to write it now, but the thing you're calling Esus2 is actually E5add9, that's the reason it sounds emoish, it's extended) video itself is great, thanks for open tunings info, didn't know much of it!
When I went to Germany, my German friends played a ton of country music. It was awesome to see what country music they thought was cool, but it wasn’t what was cool in the states. Lol. I love hearing what people from other places find cool. Awesome video!
This is awesome! Thanks for doing this fun musical exploration. You've got me all excited about the genre now. I'm gonna talk about some of my favorite emo music. I was hoping you would include a work by Tom Delonge, who has made copious amounts of pop-emo, particularly Boxcar Racer would've been a great one, it was one of the most emo records I have ever listened to. And it is important to reference The Cure, I think. If you are unconvinced, I recommend the album Galore by The Cure. The Freelance Whales (especially Diluvia) would be good inclusions as well. The truth is that there is SO much awesome emo music, from all different approaches and sub genres, that I am sure it was extremely tough to pick just a few examples for this video. Thanks!
Hello. Thanks for the comment. I was listening to box car racer this morning. Haha. I feel so is a great song, full of emotion. The guitar is proper heavy, I think it's in a drop tuning, I plan to have a look at that later. I'll be making more videos about emo for sure. Thanks for watching.
all but 2 of cap'n jazz's songs are in standard tuning, and they use 7ths, and add 9's quite a bit. if i thought about it more i could probably think of some others but no one else comes to mind. as a side note, i don't think i've ever learned any emo songs that use 9ths chords, but im sure ive heard quite a few of them and just haven't realized it. also, just wanted to say i dont think it would be 'Csus2add7add9', it'd be Cmaj9sus2 (or Cmin9sus2) but thats just nitpicking. for a recommendation, its not really the type of emo that you're talking about, but i'd still say its emo: salvia palth - melanchole. it has some super cool vibes, and one of the few albums i've listened to that i really like all of the songs on it. edit: almost forgot cowboys aren't indians. their first ep is also really good.
Awesome, thanks for your input. I thought they used them just wasn't sure in what songs etc. As for the chord, I think that may be a better way of writing it, I'll have a look, thanks.
Olerud and Forget Who We Are are in FACGCE. if you want to check, go to the bandcamp for analphabetapolothology and read the description. it says somewhere that two songs (i believe they are the two I listed) are in the Promise Ring's C Tuning. I believe this is FACGCE because there is a picture somewhere online from caP'n jazz playing a show at a school and on the board it says "Olerud - FACGCE". Also, if you want to learn those songs, I know a little about each: Olerud's intro is a C with an octave, then a C and a maj7, then a C5. (most of it is rhythm on the C octave) and Forget Who We Are's baseline is mostly just C and then for the energy building goes to E, then to G, and back to C.
I'm not sure if they qualify as emo but I'd recommend Pedro the Lion, from their 1998 debut, until now (only 5 albums!) And Deja Entendu by Brand New; whom I'm sure you've heard of. And Sunny Day Real Estate, who you must know too; I mention them mainly as seeing them live in London in 2011 was an incredible experience, after listening to their music for so long without seeing them perform.
I enjoyed this very much, thanks. I play almost exclusively in DADGAD & DADF#AD. That modal sus-2 sound has always captured me. I subscribed so I don't miss your open tunings episode.
Adam Shaw yea you’re probably right. Was mostly going off the fact that they use a lot of these emo chords. But the cool thing with title fight is that they use these emo chords and power chords without sounding specifically punk or emo.
without knowing back then Ive written a lot with these chords (was in a screamo band so it makes sense) especially a lot of sus2 chords (like every other song lol) and also extended ones like major 9s I also love all the 7s they just sound really good
Very nice. I think if you have a good ear for that kinda thing you'll find those chords without knowing what they are because they just fit the genre so well. Haha
Albums you should check out. Just Married by Glocca Morra, self-titled by I kill Giants, self-titled by Stippling, Self-titled by Joyce Manor. The first 3 have alot of math influence, joyce manor is just good ole emo
i saw Forests in the thumbnail and smiled uncontrollably. you listen to those boys? EDIT: If you haven't, please check out Sun Eat Moon Grave Party by Forests. Amazing stuff outta Singapore.
Try out “toe” they’re a Japanese Math Rock band, I think you’ll rather enjoy it. If I had to recommend an album by them, it would definitely be “The Book About My Idle Plot On a Vague Anxiety”
The way I see it the sound of emo when we get to a more pure representation is that which is sad jazz with a touch of moodiness but unlike jazz which uses really full chords an emo chord tends to omit some fretted notes to leave only the saddest part of the chord. So it sounds more stripped down and to the point. Jazz given the punk soul so to speak is how Ive always described it. Evergreen is my example of the most archetypal example of emo in a very pure form before getting that more mid west emo sound. 7th chords are key to the sound as I see it. Its one of my favorite way to resolve typically. Oh and Duster’s Inside Out. Whether you categorize them as emo or something more obscure its hard to deny that that song was made for fans of 90s emo. These days I mishmash 90s emo and screamo so much that it really does feel like one genre. In the way Iwrotehaikus…… writes music.
I just found your channel and I've been really enjoying trying to learn all this. Thank you for putting this out there. Also that SG is rad. As a strat player I'm curious to how it plays. I've never owned a Gibson.
Hello. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't got the SG anymore. It was well made, and really easy to play. I sold it and put it towards a telecaster. They are rather different from one another, SG had a slim D shape neck and was quite wide, tele that I have has a C shape that is thicker and is narrower, The SG has 12 inch radius, the tele 9.5. The list goes on. I prefer the C shape neck the tele has, it was easier to play faster on the sg but I would get hand cramp quite often when playing non open chords, especially barred chords!
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock Thanks for the reply. Im curious as to how you get that math rock sound? What amp and pedals are you using to get that signature math rock tone? Are you just running clean through your amp?
I really love this genre of music and I want to get better at it. It seems you know all the chords lol. How is it possible you remember all those chords? Do you just have to grind out the pain and play them over and over?
Thanks for this vid! The new shapes instantly inspired me to come up with a little intro and new chord progression for something, so thanks for the inspiration! \m/ As for other emo-tinged records I enjoy: Somos - "Temple of Plenty" comes to mind as belonging in this vein. And I think "Clarity" by Jimmy Eat World is OGaf (lol).
Awesome stuff. Yeah, those chords are pretty versatile, if you play them as arpeggios or as individual notes you can make some cool riffs too, like the intro to FCPREMIX by The Fall of Troy.
You should check out the band PARK if you haven't already. They're an incredible band with that emo style. The album building a better is my fav but they're all amazing.
You're in luck because it's already a song lol it's the end of this song 👍 open.spotify.com/track/3xlDBdiLDRivCIo6vdvHaa?si=69c_BOXtQsydLLEFfl7PCg&dl_branch=1
I not one hundred percent sure, but I believe I Love Your Lifestyle plays in standard. Perspective a Lovely Hand to Hold also plays almost exclusively in standard. Not a lot of crazy extended beyond 7ths or 9ths though.

a lot of these chords and patterns also work exceptionally well for shoegaze
shoegaze = emo confirmed
Shoegaze is basically for emo kids that like lava lamps.
shoegaze is for emo kids who gave up on booze and started doing weed
Егор Сидоровm i think acid would be more inappropriate since weed would just make them like sparkle punk

Definitely check out The Appleseed Cast if you haven't already, and Settlefish - either 'The Plural of the Choir' or 'Dance a While, Upset'.
Dance a while… is phenomenal
@@Blude Criminally unknown and underrated.
Hi Guy First of all I wanted to thank you for your videos and all your work, we feel that you are passionate and you know how to share your passion :) it's good to know that the emo genre can be perpetuated with channels like yours ! As for emo / screamo/math bands that I would like to make you discover I can quote:
_This town needs guns - Animals
_American Football
_ Castevet (CSTVT) - The echo and the light
_Sport - Colors ; Bon voyage
_Native - Wrestling Moves
_Daïtro - Laisser vivre les squelettes
_Totorro - Home Alone
_Rooftops - A forest of polarity
_Cyclamen - Les Memoires
Hello. Thank you for your kind words. There's a few bands I haven't heard of before on that list. I'll check them out, thanks.
The chords sounds amazing in the emo music, we like alot your work Steve. Thanks!
Thanks guys! I will read your email soon! Hope you are all well.
I know that there's no purpose to write it now, but
the thing you're calling Esus2 is actually E5add9, that's the reason it sounds emoish, it's extended)
video itself is great, thanks for open tunings info, didn't know much of it!
When I went to Germany, my German friends played a ton of country music. It was awesome to see what country music they thought was cool, but it wasn’t what was cool in the states. Lol. I love hearing what people from other places find cool. Awesome video!
10:10 I remember seeing that chord shape in a tab for girl scout cookies by mom jeans, though it was capo 3. I like using that chord as well.
I think the only difference is the 7th degree will be flattened.
What are the two songs not in standard? Olerud and the acoustic Ooh Do I Love You?
One of my favorite emo bands was The Junior Varsity
Nostalgia is real. Highschool to college feels
Sniff.. I love you bro, the video, the channel. You introduced me to delta sleep. Bless your heart sweet prince
Wish I found your channel sooner, you gave me a lot of ideas for chord progressions, cheers dude! 👍 🎸
Hello! That's awesome. Don't worry, I'll hopefully have more useful videos for you in the future^^
Thank you for giving us Emo Music Theory. This was a good find.
I'm not sure if they qualify as emo but I'd recommend Pedro the Lion, from their 1998 debut, until now (only 5 albums!) And Deja Entendu by Brand New; whom I'm sure you've heard of. And Sunny Day Real Estate, who you must know too; I mention them mainly as seeing them live in London in 2011 was an incredible experience, after listening to their music for so long without seeing them perform.
read that as my favorite Elmo chords lmao
This makes me want to learn guitar
Kayla McAfee Do it!
Kayla McAfee deciding to pick up the guitar was the best decision of my life.
Did you?
I enjoyed this very much, thanks. I play almost exclusively in DADGAD & DADF#AD. That modal sus-2 sound has always captured me. I subscribed so I don't miss your open tunings episode.
That's awesome. Yeah, I live for that sus 2 sound. Haha
DADGAD is the shit
I really appricate the effort you put into this, really makes me wanna practice!! keep at it brother.
Thank you, and thanks for watching :)
Have you listened to Basement? They’re a fantastic British alt-rock/emo group. Based on your tastes I’d recommend their latest album Beside Myself.
No, I haven't. I'll add them to the list. Thanks!
a coheed fan, i knew i liked you. you're great
That Bm13 was actually a Bm9, not trying to show you up just thought you'd like to make the correction.
Hello. Thanks for the correction. I meant to say m9, I do this quite often. Haha
Np, love your channel.
thank you chord nazi
@@IfYouKnowYouKnow999 he was super chill about it, just trying to help him correct a mistake. Don't know what you are trying to get at
Check out Title Fight - shed
One of my favourite albums of all time. It’s so easy to overlook, but the songwriting is so well done and the stylistic execution is wonderful.
Adam Shaw yea you’re probably right. Was mostly going off the fact that they use a lot of these emo chords. But the cool thing with title fight is that they use these emo chords and power chords without sounding specifically punk or emo.
without knowing back then Ive written a lot with these chords (was in a screamo band so it makes sense) especially a lot of sus2 chords (like every other song lol) and also extended ones like major 9s
I also love all the 7s they just sound really good
Very nice. I think if you have a good ear for that kinda thing you'll find those chords without knowing what they are because they just fit the genre so well. Haha

the obstacles in sight should never have the right, to be part of the problem 🎵
Renato Fontes i love that song
Albums you should check out. Just Married by Glocca Morra, self-titled by I kill Giants, self-titled by Stippling, Self-titled by Joyce Manor. The first 3 have alot of math influence, joyce manor is just good ole emo
Thanks for the recommendation. I really like the one album by them with all the short tracks, forget the name...
4:40 is roughly where chords start
i saw Forests in the thumbnail and smiled uncontrollably. you listen to those boys?
EDIT: If you haven't, please check out Sun Eat Moon Grave Party by Forests. Amazing stuff outta Singapore.
I most certainly have! That's why I put them in the thumbnail. It's one if my favorite albums at the moment.
i clicked the video because i saw Forests as well! 🙌🏻
Came here to say this lol. Forest are the bois.
Not sure if it’s standard tuning but I love jets to Brazil, you have to check them out too.
Thanks, I will do. I've been keeping a list.
Dear Mariah, the world's not big enough for the both of us!
Burn my hands TILL I'VE got nothing leheffft
Coheeeeeeed!
you earned a sub bro !
This is really helpful, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Try out “toe” they’re a Japanese Math Rock band, I think you’ll rather enjoy it. If I had to recommend an album by them, it would definitely be “The Book About My Idle Plot On a Vague Anxiety”
Awesome. I'm a big fan of toe. What do you think to their latest release?
Let's Talk About Math Rock I really enjoyed it. Specifically the tracks “The Latest Number” and “F_a_R”
YEAH BABY!
COHEED MANNNN

I wish I'd seen this video 12 years ago!
This is great, thank you!
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock My SG's been under my bed for 15 years. Way too headstock heavy for me. Maybe I should stick a bigsby on it to balance it.
@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock Thanks for the reply. Im curious as to how you get that math rock sound? What amp and pedals are you using to get that signature math rock tone? Are you just running clean through your amp?
Check out "Bon Voyage" by Sport, "You're gonna miss it all" by Modern Baseball, "Bear your mind" by Free Throw, and "Swell" by Tiny Moving Parts.
beautiful chords! Thank you for sharing💗🔮
Further Seems Forever's album The Moon Is Down was the record that really put emo on the map for me.
Is that a vinyl of Delta Sleep's 'Ghost City' I see on the shelf?
Great taste, my man.
Just the CD. Yeah! Probably by favorite release of this year so far.
Quick reply, holy hell!
Yeah, it's a solid album through and through.
make a video of you just playing, and make it as long as you can please
That's a Bmin9 that you call a Bmin13 at 11:17
Great video!
nice video... nostaligic riffs and melodies. big ups from brazil!
Thanks!
You should check out the band PARK if you haven't already. They're an incredible band with that emo style. The album building a better is my fav but they're all amazing.
Orange Grass(a bend from Taiwan 2000s) and their album Cumulonimbus I highly recommend
Thursday plays in Standard... well, Drop D.
Oh, and Turnover plays in Standard. Their album Peripheral Vision is good.
Steve you are such a sweetheart subbed
I need 6:49 turned into a full song, STEVE I AM BEGGING

@@LetsTalkAboutMathRock OH HELLLLL YEAH, thank you brother 🤝
I not one hundred percent sure, but I believe I Love Your Lifestyle plays in standard. Perspective a Lovely Hand to Hold also plays almost exclusively in standard. Not a lot of crazy extended beyond 7ths or 9ths though.
Nice. Some new bands for me to check out. Thanks.
honestly funeral for a friend is so good
YES 10000%
Algernon Cadwallader- Some Kind of Cadwallader

the drums on wrestling moves are ridiculously good
Half of these bands don't play in standard though
@@copsarebastards You say that like it's a bad thing
Snowing are the best
Have you every heard of Remo Drive? They just had a U.K. tour
Heard the name but haven't listened to them. Guess I will now! Thanks.
