When I first made the switch from conventional to synthetic engine oil some 30 years ago, I did a heat test on small samples of conventional and synthetic. In two open metal containers, I separately heated the oils using a torch flame on the bottom of the containers, comparable to heating the containers on a stove top. The conventional oil produced thick acrid smoke, eventually igniting with a dirty flame, similar to a burning tire. The synthetic oil was heated the same way, where the oil was visibly boiling, but with no smoke; and after a longer period of time than that of the conventional oil, ignited into a smokeless flame comparable to refined kerosene. That made a believer out of me of the heat resistant properties with synthetic oil.
My car is designed for synthetic oil, I am not a petroleum engineer, but this car has 145+ thousand mile on it. The manual says to use 5w20 or 5w30 synthetic. With 145K on the car, I am not messing with THAT success. I use the same brand EVERY TIME
I agree my 2000 4.0 is designed for conventional and and that's really the only I ever used in my vehicles since my forst car was a toyota corolla and knock on wood I never had an engine problem and I have used various brands over the years but my main go to oil is valvoline for my jeep.
Old school here.....Im IMPRESSED with syn. 350ci chevy ...29000 mi. ....Does NOT burn oil, pistons still TIGHT in their bore!! No scars or signs of ANY wear. 👍
Tribology is the study of lubricants, friction and their relationship. They study the effects that lubrication has on engines from the least expensive power mower engines to locomotive engines costing $750,00 to $1,000,000 and engines beyond that where repairs can get extremely expensive. This video is a very informative perspective on the basics of Tribology! Thank You!
The chart shown at 8:36 is of a 100% synthetic class 4 oil like Amsoil. All full-synthetic oils are hydro-cracked petroleum based, synthetic in name only.
The second question is that paraffin is a wax and Pennzoil is well known for using it and it causes a lot of sludge build up in engines and i have seen first hand what it can do and it's horrible. A mechanic at a dealership that i worked at had to use a vacuum cleaner to clean all the sludge build up and it took him a long time to clean it by hand and the half of the engine had to be torn down in order to clean it.
Some amount of myths floating around in the comments. Truth is even a cheap supermarket synthetic will last longer without breaking down than any mineral oil. Synthetic oil is also much less dependent on additives to achieve the desired viscosity and detergent characteristics. Additives start to break down after the engine reaches running temperature. All oils are likely to have some synthetic and some mineral oil in the blend but so called sem-synthetics were originally a substitute when synthetic oils base stocks were in short supply expensive. On a historical note mineral oil base stock made from undersea oil fields base stock (ie Gulf of Mexico or North Sea) were always considered the best for lube oil. If you have a turbo engine always use the best quality fully synthetic
While synthetic oil last longer the oil filter will not,so if you decide to go with that make sure at the half of the milage of your oil change change your filter meaning if you want to go with 7000 mile between oil change, make sure you change the filter at 3500 mile once and again at 7000 mile with oil change
Thought experiment. What if one bearing in your engine was only getting 10 % of it's normal oil flow. What oil would you want. Regular oil would be quicker to degrade and turn to varnish thus further restricting the flow. Leading to bad things.
In 79 three people gave me a old VW beetle, 63, 64, 65. Each owner use different oil. One used quaker state.and the bottom of the crank case was thick sludge. The other two were clean. Back in the 60s all oil was oil. So some regular oil is good for old cars.
A legend going around back in the 1960s through the '70s was that Quaker State and Pennzoil, both being from Pennsylvania crude petroleum, was paraffin based oil, and was more prone to having a waxy sludge buildup than engine oils from other regions. The same legend had it that if proper maintenance intervals for oil changes were done, no problems. But, if the oil was subjected to abuse of an overheated engine, or, prolong mileage between oil changes, it could result with a waxy sludge buildup with Pennzoil and Quaker State.
You missed one very important thing. Most newer vehicles require full synthetic. Especially Toyota hybrids you also must use the correct weight which is typically 0w20 or 0w16 and some really new ones require full synthetic. Also, conventional oil is not made in that weight ow20 ow16 ow8.
Yes perfectly fine. As long as you drive it for more than 30 mins every week. Thats to eliminate the moisture collection that can cause rust and corrosion. Heck, you can even do 2 years with synthetic, but just to be safe do it at least once or twice a year. Remember oil changes are cheap, engine rebuild/replacement is not
I Use Synthetic oil in my ,1800 Goldwing Luxury 20;08 Model I change my oil an Filter every 5 ooo Klms With Fail I hate Dirty Oil Look After your Bike. Honda is King.❤
Not much really, just the additives. Heck you can even use car oil on a motorcycle or motorcycle oil in your car vice versa and 99% of the time it will be fine. But motorcycle oil has some additives to allow lubrication but also allow the clutch to grip properly while car oil has superior anti wear properties. Motorcycle oils last shorter due to the high rpm nature of their engine. Though some new bikes today have higher service intervals between 7000-10000kms like KTM and BMW. I actually experienced puncturing my bmw 1200gs oil pan, fixed it with jb weld and topped its oil with diesel oil as it was the only oil available in the middle of nowhere. I made it home, changed back to motorcycle oil and my motorcycle was fine lol
I dont like the way the tin foil or what ever it is doesnt come completely off the top of the container when you open the jug . This could lead to contamination in your motor oil .
Synthetic oil is the most dangerous oil ever created in Germany and the oil in the tanks of the ship from the ww is a time bomb because it pollutes more than regular oil
Each brand of synthetics has unique characteristics. ALWAYS USE THE SAME BRAND, so your engine is used to the same thing, it can be critical. Additives and synthetic oil are not a good idea.
😊😊 the older cars and trucks most people use regular motor oil the oil channels in the older engines are different from what the newer engines of 2 day is and good motor oil and regular oil changes are cheaper than a brand new engine and if U was driving 5OO miles a week like I was 1 time 🕜 2 work it doesn't take long 4 the miles 2 add up /3,OOO miles a month back then I done all of the oil changes myself I know it done even back then 5 quarters of oil and a new oil filter every time ⏲️ 😊 is cheaper than a brand new engine 😊😊 OMG 1O 3O 2O24

Cooking oil especially palm cooking oil beats the best synthetic oil on heat test. I tested it many times

Put an oil-cooler in the lube circuit; added protection has benefits.

I’ve always wanted to know that 🙏
Thanks
Very helpful but only in a general sort of way. What is really in synthetic oil? What is a paraffin and why does it matter? What is PAO and esters?
The second question is that paraffin is a wax and Pennzoil is well known for using it and it causes a lot of sludge build up in engines and i have seen first hand what it can do and it's horrible. Fantastic.
Precisely explained.
Keep it up.
Thanks to you.

Thank you for this very useful information.
Can you make a video on speedometers, when did they become common in vehicles and how was the first one calibrated.
Thank you for the excellent comparison!! I learned a lot!!

Cool info! I always thought synthetic oil was an expensive gimmick; know better now.
Good intro to the basics.

Good video. I’d love a video on sharpening chain for chainsaw.
Always great info videos.
Thanks for that
Have you test synthetic oil vs Palm cooking oil on heat test and friction test?
Who invented the Washing Machine (Clothes Washer)?
I use synthetic in my 2013 F150 and change my oil every 8k km.
On a mechanically sound engine, synthetic oil is best. On aa engine that is no longer mechanically sound, regular oil is best.
Good stuff!!!
When you mean old cars? how old? like 80's car or 90's car? cause I have 1999 model so not sure if it will benefit me
Is it okay to change synthetic oil once a year since I don’t drive long distance and does not reach 5000 miles per year?
Yes perfectly fine. As long as you drive it for more than 30 mins every week. Thats to eliminate the moisture collection that can cause rust and corrosion. Heck, you can even do 2 years with synthetic, but just to be safe do it at least once or twice a year. Remember oil changes are cheap, engine rebuild/replacement is not
I used to change every 15k miles, but replacement filters every 5k. Worked well, oil stayed clean.
What about semi synthetic oil?
I Use Synthetic oil in my ,1800 Goldwing Luxury 20;08 Model I change my oil an Filter every 5 ooo Klms With Fail I hate Dirty Oil Look After your Bike. Honda is King.❤
Change your oil every 5k no matter what or don't
what is the different between motocycle oil and automotive oil? Why wet clutch motocycle oil last too short?

SYNTHETIC OIL IN MY 2002 GMC MAKES THE RODS,MAIN BEARINGS, AND THE LIFTERS KNOCK. CONVENTIONAL OIL INSTLLED PROBLEM SOLVED, NO NOISE.
Hydrologic lifters get cloged with synthetic oils and then overhead cam engine's suck with bicycle timing chain rubbing on plastic
I dont like the way the tin foil or what ever it is doesnt come completely off the top of the container when you open the jug . This could lead to contamination in your motor oil .
if you have an older engine conventional oil would be better better
That burns oil
Explain how engine convert power and to transmission
Synthetic oil is the most dangerous oil ever created in Germany and the oil in the tanks of the ship from the ww is a time bomb because it pollutes more than regular oil
Don't forget how synthetic oil will leak any place it can find.
Find those places and fix them ? Never had leaks on my engine.
This video is grossly sophomoric and mis-informed and reflects no actual well controlled testing protocols in the ASTM, API, and SAE !
DO NOT use synthetic oil In engine with EGR valve.
Each brand of synthetics has unique characteristics. ALWAYS USE THE SAME BRAND, so your engine is used to the same thing, it can be critical. Additives and synthetic oil are not a good idea.
