I think the sky dweller is the best Rolex model out there. It's my favorite and the design of the annual calendar is genius. Would get this over the GMT any day of the week. As you stated, the movement is the star. I prefer steel with batons, I hate the roman numerals on rolex watches, I think it makes the dial cluttered.

  • @danlin8310

I have the black dial and it is beautiful, elegant and classy in two tone. Black and gold combination oozes charm and poise. The presentation of Rolex in-house 9001 movement with annual calendar, GMT, date and time ructions all in one simple timeless dial is ingenious. I hope to add all different colored dials to my collection. Sky Dweller offers great value at current MSRP. This is going to be a future classic.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first in my city to get it in August 2017. The blue is very subtle that it looks black at night or indoors with low light but during the day it shines! The problem with a blue dial (for any watch) is that it will always be more informal than formal and it does not always contrast well with the colours of clothing that you may wear. In contrast, black and white dials are classic and timeless colours that are at home in both formal and informal situations. The black is in my opinion the best of the Sky Dweller dials as it looks very sharp and contrasts so well with the red markers. :)

I have this in steel black dial. Gets more wrist time over Daytona ALS etc. Probably because it’s my only steel watch. But mainly because it is so versatile. Goes with anything.
Yes the cyclops does get in the way of RHS of cyclops if viewed from an angle. But you only read the gmt from the top red arrow. It’s not a flaw.
    You can get cyclops removed.
I have an 8in wrist so yes it’s perfect for me. My sweet spot is 39-42mm.

BTW, wish mine sky had crown protectors and advance the two dots to three dots on the crown , giving her a trip-lock feature. As for the cyclops, eliminate it would make reading the watch much better, especially when the red is in the 3'o clock position as the magnifier hides the red square somewhat. Also to mention, the second sweep hand should have a arrow at the end for pointing instead and make it red as the daytona paul newman has. Other than that, all other functions are acceptable for this model. Mine is a two tone, white dual with a jubilee bracelet, truly stunning especially when the sun's rays hit her displaying a nice reflection on the walls.😅❤❤❤

It’s a lovely watch, and an equally lovely video, but I do have a problem with a great number of GMT watches that I just can’t get past.
It’s the use of the number 24. In GMT / UTC TIME midnight is not expressed as 24:00, it’s 00:00, so it makes no sense to me that “24” is used on the 2nd time zone ring on this watch, or that the Exp II that has “24” engraved at the top of its bezel.
Fortunately for me, and my obvious OCD tendencies , the GMT has always triangle to represent the zero hour, and so my P-series GMT II will likely be with me until the end (of my) time.

Cyclops lens in no way takes away from the design. I actually like it because when you want to see the date, you need to see it. Everything else like the second hand, gmt time etc, being magnified is irrelevant. Whoever has a gripe about the cyclops lens is just splitting hairs. In the end the function is there. Get the information you need from the watch when you want it. Been wearing it for over a year. It operates perfectly as it was designed.

Good video, but I feel you missed a great opportunity, as I suggested in my email to you, to do a design study with the watch on a Jubilee bracelet, and with the day of the week display like on the day-date. As a professional pilot (and a trained Industrial Designer) who has owned a GMT Master (16750 Pepsi) for 36 years, the Sky Dweller is now the perfect watch for me in the twilight of my career as an International B-777 pilot. To those naysayers who think it's too big or too thick, I wholeheartedly disagree. I have several pilot friends who wear the Omega Planet Ocean GMT in the cockpit, and NONE find its 43.5mm diameter and 17.05mm thick case too big, so why is 42mm and 13.9mm too large? BTW, both of these pilots have much smaller wrists and hands than my 7-5/8" wrists and 10-3/4" hand spread. Oh, and I love the design choice of the offset GMT ring. According to my AD, I should have this watch in a black or white dial in the next few months, so I'll let you know about the cyclops... Give me a call.

    • @cnaarndt
      @cnaarndt 5 лет назад +1

BTW the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 5524G-001 Pilot's Watch is also 42mm and 10.9mm thick, but no one says that watch is too big. Yes, a bit thinner, but it's also not and annual calendar either! It's also $35K USD more expensive, but hey it's a Patek Philippe. Also, let's not forget the Omega Speedmaster Professional, at 42mm and 14.0mm thick!

I agree with your comment around the cyclops and how it 'clutters' the dial somewhat. Its a shame but unavoidable unless you went dateless, but that would be nonsensical with this piece. I tried one on recently, a black dialled steel and gold and it was a beautiful thing indeed, great on my 7.5 wrist, although one thing to mention is the weight it has. Obviously due to the movement (complications) the case is thick and with a strong taper on the bracelet, it does feel a little top heavy and I wonder if after some hours this would become annoying?

I have to say that the Sky Dweller is a pretty stunning watch that I have warmed to considerably after the shock I had when I first saw it. However as you rightly point out that bezel is slightly too dominant (something I think I can forgive) but unfortunately the cyclops absolutely destroys this watch in a way that cyclops' do not do on any other Rolex model. It really has to go. It's terrible.

Thanks for your appreciation. I regret that you found my comment silly.
Whether Rolex industrial watches are very sturdy and durable that stand the test of time, that Rolex industrial watches retain their value and be appreciated... I don't disagree.
But to say that Rolex industrial watches are amazing, I very respectfully apologize: No, NO, a thousand times NO. Rolex owes everything to others, including subcontracting. Its patents, its movements, its innovations, its cases ... Rolex has built his story telling and his fortune with cunning.
Whether you mention the astonishing Breguet, Blancpain, Girard-Perregaux, IWC, Patek-Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron-Constantin, Zenith ... Ok, OK, a thousand times OK ...
      But not the:
      Jean Aegler Rolex
      Zenith el Primero Rolex
      Valjoux 72 Rolex

Interesting analysis, IDGUY. I think Rolex making the Sky Dweller in the same vain and model range as the Datejust and Day Date was no mistake. Before Rolex rebranded all of their watches as aspirational status symbols following the quartz crisis, there were achievement piece models, and the pricey but TOTL tool models worn by actual professionals. Think Mercedes Unimog vs S-Class.
The GMT Master was designed to be used by people wearing suits, hats and ties as work uniforms, but these jet plane pilots were professionals nonetheless. A jet setter is not a pilot, but rather a passenger, and the Sky Dweller was made for the well heeled passenger with frequent flier miles. That’s why I refer to the Sky Dweller as the “international corporate lawyer’s watch”, because that’s the sort of person who practically dwells on planes in business or first class, and that’s the sort of person who’d buy the watch. In short, I don’t consider the Sky Dweller the ultimate or complete GMT Master, but rather the jet setting 21st century cousin of the Datejust and Day Date.

John, I feel that you missed the entire point of the video. While the GMT Master is the quintessential pilot's watch, it is in fact still a tool watch, but unlike the Submariner, it is worn by professionals in a jacket and tie. As such both IDGuy and I feel that the GMT Master is better suited to a Jubilee versus the Oyster bracelet, in other words a dressier tool watch. The Sky Dweller is the continuation of the professional pilot's watch that is a bit more elegant than the GMT Master, and in true Rolex fashion, they took the Datejust and brilliantly modified it to make a dressier, and a higher complication sports pilot/traveler's watch. Just look at a photo of a 41mm blue dial Datejust and compare it to the 42 mm blue dial steel Sky Dweller. Yes it's 1mm bigger in diameter, and 1.9mm thicker, but it has an annual calendar and a GMT function. Rolex didn't need another GMT Master or Explorer II, it needed this watch for the professional pilot and world traveler. Just my opinion, but I am a professional international airline pilot, and a trained Industrial Designer since 1978. As such this is the perfect watch, and is why my AD will be holding one for me.

No busier than a Daytona dial. If anything it's one of the cleaner annual Calendars with a date and GMT function I've seen. Doesn't add pushers, and cleverly uses the indices to indicate month without needing to add a more cluttered abbreviated spelling of each Month somewhere on the dial.

    • @cnaarndt

That would make it smaller in diameter and in height than a Datejust II or 41. Not going to happen especially with the Ring Command Bezel, and both an annual calendar and a GMT complication. Heck, 3mm thinner would make it 10.9mm, thinner than even my vintage 16750 GMT Master at 12.5mm. An Omega Speedmaster Professional is 42mm and 14.4mm thick, and no one calls that watch a pig. It's called a classic.
