- Ragnarok! It's the end of the world, Norse style. It's got everything you want in an apocalypse. Earthquakes, destruction, armies of the dead, a giant evil wolf, giants with flaming swords, and a kind of happy ending. It's got it all. But is it really Norse? It wasn't written down until after Christianity had arrived in Europe. So how much influence is there?

It's interesting how God of War 2018 and now God of War: Ragnarok was done based off of this. When comparing the game to the myth itself, there's a handful of similarities but also a ton of differences (for one, Loki is a literal child, therefore having him be married _and_ tied to a rock with the guts of his child is something Sony SM knew they absolutely weren't gonna do). Great stuff.
I like how in god of War Loki is the good guy and Baldur is the bad guy

Neil Gaiman's "Norse Mythology" is an awesome read, fairly close to Snori's telling but with just enough modernization to be humorous (in appropriate places) and enjoyable by modern readers.
I can not recommend it highly enough.
The audiobook (narrated by the author) is awesome too, great for a family road trip.
True great book, but I thought he said Fenrir will eat the moon
Nothing like starting your day off with the Nordic apocalypse

Actually most of what we know about Ragnarök comes from the Völuspá in the Poetic Edda, which was written some time 9th and 10th centuries in Iceland, a century before Iceland was christianized. But sure, the oldest found versions of the poem are copies from the 12th century, so it could have been altered by later authors
rymdalkis nerd alert nerd alert 🚨 (sorry)
Correct
Something that you left out is Lif and Lifthrasir, two humans female and male, who manage to survive the fires of Ragnarok by hiding in a wood (possibly tied to Mimir based on the name, and therefore might represent Yggdrasil as a kenning).
These tie into the theme of hope and new life from the old, as they repopulate the now-fertile land of ash and water.
Why arent there movies about this whole mythology?! Marvel doesn't count in my eyes because they really only focus on Thor... There should be a Norse Mythology Cinematic Universe.
HeroesIQ my thoughts exactly
Right?! I mean think about all the great films about each and every god could get? Wheres Joss Whedon when you really need him?
HeroesIQ the previous thor movies weren't too well perceived
Probably too expensive. Ragnarok is basically a massive 120 minute battle scene with special effects in every frame.
No because films about gods aren't good, films need to be about characters and smaller scale stories, not world ending north mythology
*SPOILERS FOR GOD OF WAR*
*
*
*
As a Norse fan, I love the way that God of War approached the mythic tales from the point of view of Mimir, and Loki. For example, Baldur as a deeply scarred individual driven to madness, and hatred toward his mother for casting a spell on him that doesn't allow him to feel, how Frigg and Freya are the same person, but in Odin's scorn for Freya, had scribes separate the two in stories, so that Freya would never get any positive credit, and how Mimir expertly tells stories of Odin and Thor's more deplorable actions, showcasing their selfish natures, whether for violence or wisdom. All of these examples essentially adding an asterisk to the heroic tales of these particular Aesir. In order to soften the actions of Thor and Odin, Odin vilified the Giants in myth, along with the actions of Loki. Meanwhile, Loki is heralded as the clever hero who pays for his actions, but breaks free as the hero of the Giants and nature. With the death of Baldur in God of War, Ragnarok is initiated early, and thus the turning of the tide on a generation of the selfish Aesir who took everything they wanted, made sure the good of their kind like Ty'r was killed, and cared little for the lives of mortals, nature, and the giants. All in all, Highly recommended game.
Wow thanks for the spoilers anushole
I’m loving Norse mythology too.
Is it possible that after Ragnarok, Magni becomes the Allfather?
Since he is the god of strength...and stronger than Thor.
@@blefyplayswowable he said spoilers tho
Just got the platinum and yep, agree with everything you said.
@@blefyplayswowable he gave a spoiler alert, dude.
Sigyn didn't 'arrange' to be left with Loki, the Gods left the decision to her. She hadn't committed any crime but was married to Loki, so her punishment was enough to see her sons die as part of the imprisonment of their father. So she was left either to leave Loki to suffer for the death of their sons, or stay with him because... what else was there left for her to do?
Admittedly we don't have a lot of sources about Sigyn (blame the Norse oral tradition and Christians destroying or rewriting written versions), she completely disappears from the Sagas after Loki escapes and the start of Ragnarok. Does she die, does she wander off and show up with Odin's sons to help rebuild the world after Ragnarok, does she turn into a flea who gets put in to a box and put into a bigger box and then smashed with Mjölnir, who knows.
I UNDERSTOOD THAT FLEA REFERENCE!!!
So what part does the Incredible Hulk plays in all of this?
None as he is not part of Norse Mythology but they do have giants

Wonder why the nordic religion died out. They had by far the best stories.
Christian conquest. Upon the 'liberation' of Nordic nations, the Christian authorities destroyed documentations of the Nordic religion.
Now, mere fragments remain of the Norse religion.
Is This Rain? Not just the Norse, this goes for the Slavic , Celtic , and Germanic peoples as well. The old ways have been all but erased.
It was more politically favourable. During the Middle Ages the various nordic kings were slowly starting to turn their realms into centralised kingdoms instead of loose federations of small territories with their own lords. Christianity was a good tool for that because 1) it came with an established and orderly hierarchy of literate clergymen who could be used to run the administration necessary for that process and 2) christianity had a very strong ideological undercurrent of sacred kingship. Before this kings, while they often had an important role in religious ceremonies, were purely worldly rulers. The closest they got to any supernatural aura was mythical descent from a god. But if they converted their people to christianity and convinced them that they were sacred rulers, appointed by god, like the Frankish kings, that massively increases their authority and prestige. Plus, when their realms started to become centralised states, they needed to start some more extensive foreign policies. If they wanted their kingdoms to survive and not be isolated outsiders free for the taking in the eyes of the south, they had to integrate themselves in the system of christian states. And quite obviously, aside from adopting its wider cultural attributes, that required conversion to christianity. After all what good, christian ruler would establish marriage ties or an alliance with a kingdom of godless pagans.
Is this Rain?, Norse was mainly an undocumented religion, it was almost purely word of mouth
xinic5 It was also the muslim poet Firdausi that wrote the Persian Book of Kings, which is essentially a compilation of stories from Zoroastrian mythology.

Skoll and Hati: *YOU TAKE THE MOON AND YOU TAKE THE SUN*
Ragnarok
In Neil Gaiman’s book on Norse Mythology I read that Loki invented the net because he was cocky and wanted to figure out how he would catch himself. I suppose there would be many forms of the myth. Fun to hear.
Thor's and Odin's sons weren't the only survivors of Ragnarok according to the legends Gaiman shared in his book, though. You should've mentioned the man and woman hiding in the roots of Yggdrasil.
(((gaiman)))
Watch/read ThuleanPerspective's work if you actually want to understand the european religion
You forgot to mention that the evil serpent Nidhögg also survives and lives on in the new world, showing that evil never really disapears. You also forgot to mention that two humans, the man Ask and the woman Embla, survive to repopulate the earth.
So basically, the end of norse myth sounds earily similar to the very beggining of another myth. Think about it:
The world is being rules by a good God (Balder), whose primary trait is love as opposed to fierceness, the first man and woman (Ask and Embla) live in a beautiful and peaceful green land, but they are under the looming threat of the evil serpent (Nidhögg). Hmm...
I think you find this sounding suspiciously christian because it is.
The two humans who survive in Norse mythology is called Lif and Lifthrasir and Balder is explicitly not the ruling god of the new world, this world is ruled by a god whose name is yet to be learned.
The significance of Balder returning isn't that he returns to rule but that he returns having made peace with Hoder. Balder and Hoder was in the original stories bitter archenemies and fought a for a very long time due to their mutual love for the princess Nanna, this war between the two is actually a very major arc and a catalyst for a lot of the events in the myth.
If you think I'm making this up then here you go:
The original story of Balder's death: sacred-texts.com/neu/saxo/saxo03.htm
rattis Ask also means ashes fyi
You are confusing Ask and Embla with Liv and Livtrasir (Liv is the woman). The former were the first humans, the latter the surviving ones.
Ask means "Ash tree" not simply "ash". So it has nothing to do with "ashes to ashes." Embla either means "Elm tree" or "Vine."
+Thor Sneppen
Yes and no. First of all, we do not realy know how old the 'asatro' is. Secondly, we may not be 100% sure if nordic pagans believed the wolrd to be cyclic in nature, but it is by far the most believable interpretation. After all, every non-christian culture view time that way.
Everyone whos played God of war 2018 is now hyped to see what loki will do
Thanks for giving a shout out to Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology! Just finished it and I have to say it was a wonderfully entertaining read. Gaiman does a fantastic job adapting them for a modern audience.

"except for Loki. Until he dies. Oops spoiler"
I feel like he just spoiled God of war 5 for me :
We need a mythological cinematic universe! Norse, Roman, Greek, Egyptian and so many others. Would be great to see on the big screen
So Loki dies in Ragnarok guys. You heard it here first
+jellydoughnut But Loki appears in the Infinity War trailer, though.
Everyone who have read Norse myth knows that. XD
Yeah but Thor dies in the mythology as well and will still be in the MCU after Thor:Ragnarok
+Paladin Dance Judging by the Infinity War trailer, something bad will happen to Thor at the end of the Ragnarok movie. But he will still be alive, though.
Hank Pym theory: Thor defeats Hela, but destroys the Bifrost (again), then met the Guardians
I loved that Petyr Baelish reference. However...
Vincent Killion yes! 😂
CHAOS IS A LADDER... Unless you die before you start climbing it
One word kratos
Ugly Saiyan God and *boi*
And “head”
And blue bald guy and hygiene guy
Ugly Saiyan God and dust pouch
Those are three Words.
Fun fact: Loki actually makes the net thinking of ways the other Aesir would catch him, inventing nets for the future, the gods see the burnt remains, realize what he was doing and make one to catch Loki
I love Neil's Norse mythology story. It's very easy to understand and so much fun to read. I would recommend it to people who want to know more about Norse mythology
What about Lif (she) and Lifthrasir (he)? Not only plant and animal life are regenerated post-Ragnarök... a second human ur-couple, conveniently young and fertile, survives the conflagration as well. Doesn't that add even more of a silver lining to the tale?
then he came to new york and fought the avengers
I love the heavy metal references throughout this course. Someone on the team is a fan!
Oh my god, I've never been this early! So excited we're talking about ragnorak, it's so complex and interesting.

tbh I love rick riordan but Magnus Chase is a bit disappointing since his voice is exactly like Percy Jackson. Still enjoy the series but ''tis not unique at all
Himani Yadav I too enjoy all those books, but I do agree on one part. The Magnus Chase series is lacking in terms to Myth.
The Original Greek ones had tons of creatures, objects, and gods from Greek myth show up all over the place. In the Norse ones, we havn't seen that much.

man so much important info left omissing.. heres one.. Whenever Sygin steps away to empty the bowl, a drop of venom falls on loki so he screams and shakes in pain, this is the explanation for earthquakes in norse mythology
This is lovely, you guys really did this myth justice, it was told very similar to how it was told to me as a child in Sweden.
Thanks for mentioning the parallel with the Vedic story.
how come the nordic myth mention corn? isn't corn from the americas? is a matter of writing the myth in later times? when corn arrived to europe from beyond the atlantic?
shedmeraked korn in Danish just means grain, I think it's the same for English where maize was renamed corn
shedmeraked Corn in Germanic speaking countries just refers to the most common cereal/grain in the region. In Scotland it was oats, England wheat, of the Nordic realms most likely wheat.
Maybe it is, but there is also evidence of vikings arriving in the americas well before Colombus.
By corn, they mean wheat
A mistranslation no doubt.
Firstly, I LOVE this subject (and CrashCourse in general). Just one thing- could you double check about the fourth age in Hindu Mythology? I grew up being told that it was the age of "Kali" (vice) and not "Kaali" (the goddess). Kaliyuga (yuga=age) is supposed to be the age when everything degenarates, therefore leading to complete destruction and then re-creation.
Apart from the pronunciation of characters and events, and all the things you left out of this myth, this was a pretty good introductory video to ragnarok.
2:23 Goddess of skiing? How fun lol
When you're the only one who has no clue about this God of War everyone's talking about
What if Ragnarok has already happened, thats why we know about it already? What if we are just pieces in Baldrs story?
According to Norse mythology, everything dies. Except two humans who hid in the world tree. They have a long chain of children, beginning a new time and era.
Stormsurge
Maybe it's happened time and time again, but with different people doing different things.
Maybe a long, long, time ago, Tròndur threw a dart made of thistles at Bordr, and then two giant cats ate the sun and the moon.
I don't even believe in Norse mythology at all, but it's so cool :p
And why does that sound like Adam and Eve? Hmmm.... As said, maybe it has already happened?
I like your comment. But I can't give you a like , becouse of your avatar, filthy space commy.
Eolas Nord mythology was before Christianity
I really liked how he talked about the metal bands at the beginning
"The opposite of war isn't peace; It's creation!" -Rent (the musical)
Woah woah woah. So Ragnarok more or less ends where it starts?
OMG Dark souls takes place during Ragnarok. And linking the fire postpones the winters. When you fight Gael the whole world is nothing but ash. Gwynevere was the sun and Gwyndolin the moon both eaten and killed, the Londor shades are Loki's forces assailing the first kiln to kill the lord of cinder (Odin).
Yes dark souls is inspired by Norse mythology in more than 1 way
Where is kratos?
This is the greatest channel I have ever seen. Thank god for cool people making cool stuff. Much love
That was great.
Here's hoping for an eventual episode on Shinto.
Viking metal exist, as well as pirate metal. They are mostly rooted in folk metal subgenre, which use mighty folky instrument such as the flutes!
Alicia Marian
We need more Scottish folk metal, bagpipes go so surprisingly well with metal
you forgot about the ship made of human nails!
@7.46 ✨(cosmic) understatement!
Left out the cloud at the end of the Norse silver lining there. Immediately after the description of the new gods chilling and playing chess and enjoying their new hall, there's a description of how Nidhogg - the dragon who'd previously been gnawing at the roots of the World Tree - flies toward them with corpses in his wings. And that's the cliffhanger it ends on
Spoiler alert after the spoiler, smart

Sometimes I wonder if these myths served as entertainment just as comics do today. Maybe one day in the future dark ages Batman will be worshiped.
I just have to appreciate how Americans make perfectly normal names sound awesome. Names like "Vidar" and "Roar" do not sound like angry growls in Norwegian.
