Minor point, the "giants" in old Norse mythology aren't actually "giants" the way we think of them. It's sort of a cross translation thing, but giants are are actually the same species as the gods, they're just a different family, so they're the same size as the gods, and completely humanoid.
Thank you. I was also taught as a child (Swedish, so these myths were as important as the Christian ones) that Loki WAS a giant, he just lived with the Aesir.
Kinda like the titans of Greek mythology
Some individuals were described as big
Some are big like skrymir, surtur, Ymir, holy cow, and other giants in Jotunheim even Tyr's father
They are not the same species as the gods.
Gods are Aser or "Æsir". And as we all know, the "Giants" are Jötunn.

Wow. I’m so used to Greek mythology that I assumed all myths end with the moral basically boiling down to: don’t mess with arrogant gods.
So fascinating and refreshing to learn of one with actual morals.

Nordic Mythology ends with Ragnarökr - where many of the Gods die!

Logi: flame
Hugi: Mind
Elli: Old age
It's really neat that modern Icelandic still has a good connection with Old Norse, which is the language most Norse myths are written in.
When I was 11 this was one of my favorite stories. I laughed so hard that Thor had drank up part of the ocean.
That part boggled my mind a bit. But because in the story I heard, the tip of the drinking horn had an opening and that opening was beneath the water. Which seemed weird because I knew water didn't flow upwards (from the ocean), usually.
Maybe it was my dad's creative take on it though, don't recall.

Don't forget the eschatology of Norse mythology; Ragnarök, the event where most of the gods die - not even the apocalypse comes close to the drama offered in Norse mythology....
As a Norwegian I might be biased, but sometimes I think that Norse Mythology is both cool and waaay too underrated. Parts like these could *almost* be called philosophy. Not saying that Greek, Roman or Hindu mythologies/religions are boring, of course, as those are awesome too.
SuicideBunny6 Too bad norse storytelling didn't build Athens and Sparta. Where are the norse relics? Wood huts?
+Professorbairos
As a fellow Scandinavian, I've always loved our common history, and especially the old tales about the gods.
Aside from the obvious bias we both feel, I think the nature of Norse mythology just resonates a lot more with humans than f.ex the old Greco-Roman gods!
Now sure, as +Alex pointed out, the Greeks build massive impressive structures to their gods, and regarding ancient Philosophy, no one has contributed as much to Europeans way of seeing themselves, as the old Greeks did!
But their gods just don't resonate in same way, the Norse gods is in touch with nature, they ARE nature!
Their roots in old shamanistic religions is just closer to the entire human experience!
Perhaps it also contributes to the fascinating mythology that it really is a melting pot, with Druidic and Shamanistic influences, coming from east, north east and south west and pantheons of gods from south and south east! If you dive deep into analyzing it, while looking at population movement it ---
+GorillaGuerilla continues)
--- it becomes even more fascinating!
I spend a great deal of time around Christmas researching the roots of Santa, (how Óðinn is the original Santa), and it was amazing how roots to certain elements could be tracked all the way back in time, back through history and through routes crossing down through eastern Europe and Eurasia and Asia - with elements from the Vedas.....

You might as well give a shot to Greek mythology.
So I have questions... Aren't Thor and Loki enemies?🤔
I mean Ragnarok starts when Loki breaks free of the cave and kills balder, Thor's half brother
Also, isn't Loki a giant himself?🤔
@@mohsh3946 This is late, but if you're still curious...
Loki was chained up because he killed Baldur, or rather tricked someone into killing him. Loki is indeed a giant, which in Norse mythology are not the typical half-witted huge cannibals we might think of. They were a magical, powerful and intelligent race pretty similar to gods, which were themselves in several groups. The ones we know the most about are the Aesir, who lived in Asgard.
Thor and Loki fought and quarreled all the time, but I wouldn't say they were truly enemies. Thor was generally a pretty hot-headed guy and Loki had a habit of tricking and cheating people. But things always seemed to work out between them, until later on. The death of Baldur was the final straw for the Aesir, including Thor. That's when they killed Loki's sons, chained him to a rock and made a snake drip acid onto his face endlessly.
So at that point, yes, they were essentially enemies. It was said that Loki would someday break free and rally the giants to attack the Aesir alongside his other children, Fenrir and the World Serpent. Interestingly though, Thor and Loki don't actually fight in most accounts of Ragnarok. Odin is killed by Fenrir, Thor and the World Serpent kill each other, but Loki and Thor don't actually face each other to my knowledge.
