- Dive into the German tale of Godfather Death and his godson, the doctor who tries to master mortality.
--
A husband and wife were in despair. The woman had just given birth to their 13th child, and the growing family was quickly running out of food and money. Wandering into the woods, the father encountered a skeletal figure with sunken eyes and a gaunt face: this was Death himself, come to offer his services as Godfather. Iseult Gillespie tells the tale of Death and the doctor.

Then whats the point of that line?
@@randobob4733 to point out we period of our life when we live carefree and perhaps reckless, and the other when we realize we only have so much time left
But that's my guess
Its means once you realise you need to appreciate your life and doing good deeds thats your second life obviously its the same one life but you will be better after you understand life and yoir purpose.
Rando Bob what I think is that once people start realizing they only have one, their second live starts, but there’s only one life according to the first statement, so people realize they only have one live much too late in their life.
That just sounds like having one life with extra steps

@The Third Horseman good reasoning
death: "eat the rich!!!"
@The Third Horseman maybe death only wanted the king, and he decided to claim the princess in his place when the king was healed by the doctor?
I think it is because both was linked with greed. The doctor wanted the fame for the saving the king, and he wanted love and gold from saving the princess. Both times death was at the foot of the bed.

Xx sTrAnGe xX but death judges none and it cares about it not
Whats interesting is that although death was supposed to be unbiased, I think he grew to love his godson but felt bound to his strict rules of equality.
I was actually raised with this story and as a small child, I absolutely loved this :) In the version I was told though, the doctor was allowed to choose any candle in the cavern to replace the princes', but of course he chose his own candle per "chance".
I read a version where the doctor pleaded with death to light another candle for him on top of his candle, which was almost out, but death cunningly placed the candle on the wick and the first one went out.

this has to be my favorite from this channel, the animation, the story, the voice acting just yes
God: offers to save this man and his entire family
Man: nah mate, I'm good
Death: hello i..
Man: take my son
Actually, God offered the same thing. However, the man kenw that God also held judgement over humans, and that all humans weren't equal in his eye, unlike Death, who didn't care about who the human was, since they were all equal.
Because he didn't like being judged. Tell you what, 13 kids and not enough money to feed them? They deserve to be judged.
A God's deal may not be just , but all are equal in deaths eyes.
Basically he was the most likely of the three to give a fair deal
@@animeviewer66 except what you consider fair. I looked at it the other way. Death have no judgement, he takes anyone or no one, all the same who they are. God has judgment so he see whether a man is good ar bad so that's how he would decide one will live or not. This father knows that if some of his children were bad God will take them. That's why he made a deal with death who will spare all his family.
@@animeviewer66 fair is one thing, equal totally different thing. So I think God is fair, death was just equally choosing.
"He could not trust in some one who judged human life"
But death see no man.

Can u plz explain that part... why he rejected God's offer but accepts death to be his son's godfather??!!
Lilly Swann you can explain it in many ways, but essentially what we all have in common is dying; whereas our beliefs, our ‘gods’ and our ‘demons’ are all dependent on an individual, case by case basis, and each belief comes with its own set of rules, dictations, and determinations of who is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or ‘worthy/unworthy’. So the father felt it was best to trust death, because death eventually takes everyone, there’s no avoiding him, so he truly had no reason or agenda to either trick or help the father. Plus it was his ‘13th’ son, so perhaps it was fate. 😂
