Loki the mischief-maker, writhes in Thor’s iron grip. The previous night, he’d snuck up on Thor’s wife and shorn off her beautiful hair. To fix what he’d done, Loki rushes to the dwarves and tricks them into making gifts for the gods. Wanting to best their smith rivals, the dwarves make a set of golden treasures, including a hammer called Mjolnir. Scott A. Mellor traces the legend of Thor’s hammer.

yeah but then he would probably have to pay them, and that would involve going back to Asgard to gather the needed Gold where a pissed off Thor is waiting.

Yeah, but Loki is a "trickster." A con artist and pathalogical liar.
He always takes the path of (seemingly) least resistance, which is telling people whatever it takes to get them to do things. Asking permission also puts the chance of success in the hands of others while lying allows Loki (experienced manipulator) to set the odds.
And in "defense" of Loki's decision, the odds of tricking dwarves seems like something in his favor, and he played his hand as perfectly as possible. The only thing he wasn't prepaired to prevent was a miraculous skillshot by Brock.
Of course, the lesson here is that lying, reguardless of odds, is always a high stakes gamble. And cutting a lady's hair is always a death wish.
But he is the master of trick not assistance.
Odins spear also had the ability to never miss its target, which was helpful for odin because he only had one eye.
And Mjollnir had another, maybe two other abilites. The hammer could grow and shrink its size, so much so that Thor could hide it in his shirt. And the hammer would instantly kill anything it was used againts. But this could also be explained by Thors ridicoulous strength. His strongest hits with the hammer left literal valleys where there were mountains before.
On top of that, any oath taken under the spear is unbreakable, even to the gods

Loki is hardly the victim in this story. He's the one that stole the hair of a Goddess. He's the one that came up with a way to get himself excused for this, by tricking the Dwarves. He's the one that agreed to stake his own head when one of the Dwarves saw through his scam. And he didn't even honor that promise in the end, mostly weaseling himself out on a flimsy technicality.

Ive heard mythological Loki called a looney toons antagonist instead of a maniacal prince of darkness.
Some more context
• Loki was wasted, seems in myth Loki is a drunk
• Sif was made bold, not shaved. Loki ripped the hair bulbs
• Loki does not reveal himself to the brothers
• Thor hammer can shrink and enlarge on Thor command
Also, the fact that Loki was a god, it probably only takes a day for his body to heal so Thor can come back the next day and shatter his bones all over again. Continuing to do so until his wife's hair grew back.

To everyone commenting that the dwarfs could have chopped his head off in the middle:
-They were going to need his brain intact because they were planning to use it to craft something (because of all the weird stuff that goes on up there they thought it would be interesting)
-They actually did try to stab his face after he said that, but Loki has planned ahead and had a plan B in case the neck-thing didn’t work. He had made sure in advance that he had protection from all knife blades, and after revealing that, the dwarves just gave up and sewed his mouth shut instead because they were sick of his bs.
That's not in the real mythology
The "need brain" was just in the Valhalla comics and this about knives protection seems just an excuse not made in myth

@@pastelguts6182 i'ts canon in the Marvel comics that when the Ragnarok ends the universe resets except with marvel's Thor for some reason, anyway the last Thor before this Thor was the mithological Thor so they knew that his norse gods were pretty different compared to the norse mithology, and in the mcu probably because when the gods arrived on earth (for a war) they probably tell the humans (or norse people) the basic of their mithology so they made Up the rest of the norse mithology, so i'ts not a missconception is an adaptation

I think Loki is such an interesting figure in the Nordic mythology. The Norse Mythology is famous for having highly realistic gods, but Loki stands out as the more interesting one because he's so disaligned as far as a character goes. Thanks for the interesting story.
