  • In this, one of my longer VLOG's we delve for the first time into the new Tuono to look for 3 hidden items;
    1. Does it have a Lithium Battery?
    2. Does it have the Piaggio "PMP" connection?
    3. Does it have the USB power take off?
    Two and a half of these questions are answered as we look "under the hood" at the 2021 Aprilia Tuono Factory.
    In case you don't care for nearly 30 minutes of my sparkling wit and charismatic presence, you can use these time marks as points where you might want to drop in a view;
    1. Lithium Battery; 8:20
    2. PMP; 15:58
    3. USB Power; 22:18
    4. Summary of what I found; 25:22
    Incidentally in this VLOG I used the Sony ZV-1 camera with the Synco G-1 wireless mic set up. I am rather pleased with the audio quality, how about you?
    To wrap it all up, fun digging into the Aprilia revealed (mostly) good results, a few disappointments, and some fun times here at Wistful Vista's.

    So helpful, thank You! Another thing to note is the body panel shoulder bolts tend to squish the plastic and bottom out. This will then cause the rivnuts to spin making removal difficult. I needed to wedge something against the plastic whole loosening to get them to break free. I then added a washer on top of the plastic to compensate. A drop of loctite helps along the outer edge of the rivnut to resist future spinning. Or, have the rivnut re set with a proper tool.

    • @GareyCooperdude
      @GareyCooperdude  Год назад

      Thanks for the kind words Curtis and also for the tip here! Yes, I agree, although I did not have this issue with my own work. I like the idea of using the washer and a bit o' loctite. I have found that the body panel screws need to be handled carefully because they will distort. Also too easy to over tighten!
      Great tip!

    Garey, the different seat screw bolts are easily explained: your dealer lost one of the OE bolts when fitting the non-OE charging fly lead. Ask the supplying the dealer to fix that. It is very unprofessional. Optimate need to brand their Lithium-ion leads accordingly; it is not the responsibility of Piaggio. The fascia self-tapping screws vary in length because they need to be!
    Keep those vids coming. Very entertaining. I ride a MY2020. They really are fabulous machines. Ride safe!

    • @GareyCooperdude
      @GareyCooperdude  2 года назад

      Thanks! Yes, and I'm seeming to recall that when the bikes are shipped crated the seat is not installed? Not sure about that so maybe it shouldn't be blamed on Aprilia......but unprofessional to be sure.
      I have also by now checked them with my "fishing" magnet and the shiny one is non-magnetic stainless steel, the black one is steel, magnetic. I wish I could leave it at that but I can't so I will source another correct bolt for the seat.
      Yes, it's totally good news that the bike does come with the Lithium Battery and I am curious why Aprilia do not make better publicity for this? I think most owners would be pleased, and certainly it helps to inform them that it is no longer a lead based battery so if they have an older battery maintainer it will not and should not be used.
      And to you as well, Ride Safe!

    • @Poweredtwowheeler
      @Poweredtwowheeler 2 года назад

      @@GareyCooperdude Garey, Thanks for the response. Whether the seats are pre-installed or not on delivery, they are removed as part of the pre-delivery inspection (PDI) by the dealer. In the UK at least, Aprilia do not come supplied with battery charge leads.That allows the owner to buy any charger (tender) he or she wants. So for example, we can therefore choose to use CTEK products. However, here the dealers seem to fit Optimate leads. I think therefore your dealer when fitting the Optimate lead lost the stainless bolt and couldn't be bothered to find and fit the correct replacement. When you present the machine for the initial service the correct bolt should be supplied and fitted by your dealer.

    I got my RSV4 E5 (european version with turn lights in the headlight, not in the mirrors)
    Thank you for the time spent on the video and the shared information
    I fully agree, getting the rear seat off is a misery. The very first time I had to ask for help and use my 2 hands... I don't know how to send feedback to Aprilia in order to improve it however.
    I bought an Optimate monitor for Li battery. It comes with a connector which have a green rubber around to indicate it is Li specific. Otherwise, I looked around and on my bike there is no Optimate cable pre-installed. Not a big deal however, everything is in the box.
    Best regards

      Interesting it seems that I have heard from other European riders that the charging cable is not pre-installed on EU machines.....but we envy the built in turn signals!

  • @bobcarter5548
    @bobcarter5548 2 года назад +1

    Very informative Garey. Agree totally with your comments on the battery. Optimate have a Lithium specific charger and clearly use the (07) form factor connector. When fitted on Lithium batteries, the connectors usually have a Green cap on to signify Lithium. Clearly Aprilia do not know this. As I have a PMP on my current 2019 Tuono, I will take that off when I swap it as it looks as if it will fit. As for USB, that is a given so nice to know Piaggio were thinking about us. Cutting that panel is not nice. Oh and your comment on Bits and Bob's. As I am in the UK and we use this term a lot, I think the answer originates from carpenters' tool kits containing parts for a drill, with bits used for making holes while bobs are routing or screwdriving drill attachments. Oh and the seats screws being different is very bad. They should be in the form of the silver bolt with the blank locating section at the bottom of the screw. To start bolts directly with thread (like the black anodized bolt), is wrong and will result in cross threading. On a safety item like the seat that is not good. When next in the dealers for your 600 mile first service, get it changed under warranty. Take care and great sound by the way.

    • @GareyCooperdude
      @GareyCooperdude  2 года назад

      Okay, an education in UK history in ONE paragraph Bob! That's huge buddy......and now that you mention it a "bob" used in USA terms might also be referred to as a "Plumb bob" which is that lead weight used to find level....so maybe there is a connection there as well.....
      The older PMP may fit and work, just don't know. I have reached out to AF1 Racing here in the US who are fairly well known Aprilia specialists...and they have told me that the new PMP requires a dealer installation as the dash/ECU must be programmed to use it....still researching this.
      Panel and USB is really good news. I have already ordered the Piaggio adapter so hopefully will install this next week.
      And finally, bad really bad on the two bolts. I have also by now checked these with my magnetic "fishing" tool, and the black one is steel while the shiny one is Stainless Steel, non-magnetic. AND, you recall my ADD, I will not be able to stand this so I need to pay probably the over priced money for the 2nd Stainless bolt.
      Great comment.

      @GareyCooperdude  2 года назад +2

      Hello, certainly. As far as the gas cap and tank protector are concerned the same units that worked with the 2017 model I had will work with the 2021. But I used the TWM gas cap,TWM QUICK ACTION CNC ALUMINUM GAS CAP FOR APRILIA. I got the one with the red lever. You can order the one that would fit models from 2017-2020 and it will fit the 2021. I don't know if you are in the USA, but several companies carry these; Motomillion, Revzilla, etc. and in the USA you can get them on Amazon.
      The Tank protector is more or less "generic" and I found this on AF1 racing. But once again you can find these on Amazon. And even though the gas tank is slightly different on the 2021 model, tank protectors from earlier years will fit as well.
      Good luck, hope this helps!

    The plug you found behind the upper left side panel is indeed the PMP / MIA connector , the PMP unit cost here in europe about 134 euro after connection you probable have to go to the dealer for a software update that was the case here in the Netherlands without the update the unit will not function , with the unit working you can leave your phone in your pocket because everything will work thru your display and left buttons on the bike you even will have navigation on it.

    I would say more than highly likely the dealer lost the original screw under the seat and not the factory, they have the seat off to PDI the bike. And I had my 2021 Tuono out the other day my indicators self cancel, I live in Northern Ireland btw keep up the good work appreciate the videos.

      Been up there in Northern Ireland myself, other than the weather which can be "challenging" lots of nice riding roads! A bucket list ambition of mine is to see the Northern 200.
      Yes, I am thinking as you are that probably the dealer lost the bolt during the delivery process because I seem to recall that as crated at the factory the seat is not installed typically?
      I have by now checked the bolts with my magnetic "fishing" tool and the black one is steel, while the shiny one must be stainless steel non-magnetic.
      I wonder why my turn indicators don't seem to self-cancel? I did look in the manual and if there is advice on how to change that condition I cannot find it.....it may be buried in the menu's on the settings one goes through on the dash? I will continue to explore this but so far no joy.

      So interesting that some countries seem to have different specifications/standards than others....
      But I would say you should double check on whether or not the cable is there. Mine was well hidden in the rear area under the pillion/rear cover piece.
      If it is not there it is not very difficult to add one, they are for sale in the after market. Check which type of batter you have, I have the Lithium as I note in this VLOG. But this will determine which battery maintainer cable you need to select.

      Howdy Simon, all the way from Southampton! Isn't that where the Victory is on display? Think I've been there....
      On the PMP, no sir I've not received it yet. I ordered it about 3 weeks ago and was told it was "in stock" but it would take 4-5 weeks to get to the shop. Hmmm, not sure what "in stock" means to them?
      BUT, and this is a big one, I was also told that this needed to be installed by a dealer. Supposedly, the display has to be re-programmed which requires the dealer ECU hook up to do. I have no further information than that.....and the fact that you have received yours gives me some hope that my own may not be too far from delivery.
      The previous generation phone/bluetooth app was called "V4-MP." And yes, in that case after installation of the device and download of the app on to your phone you paired it like almost any other bluetooth system.

      Just note that there are usual regulations that require the turn signals to be mounted on those extended arms.
