  • The Ruger American Ranch in 450 Bushmaster is a heavy hitter, I had so much fun using it in combination with the Leupold Mark AR 450 Bushmaster CDS scope. A great combo for anyone looking for a rifle to take large game.

    Great review Ozzie , love the camera vision. It’s great that the big manufacturers like Ruger sell relatively cheap reliable hunting rifles for the hard working budget conscious working class hunters and new shooters just getting started in shooting and hunting . We are getting a lot of value for our $$$ these days in regards to firearms .

    I have one also and love it. It shoots 5 rounds into one ragged hole at 100 yards and has been my "Go to" deer rifle for years now. No more tracking. If your a handloader it really becomes interesting. Without the limitations of the AR action you can step up the loads safely. I'm currently shooting a Hornady 225gr. FTX at 2600 fps. with no signs of pressure, sticky bolt or extraction. I could probably go higher but why ? Did I mention I love that rifle and yes, Ruger really needs to come out with a 5 round mag.

    • @boingkster

      Use an aftermarket single-stack 308 magazine. They will feed the 450 rounds just fine.

    This gun is extremely accurate. You did not mention the action sits on two aluminum v blocks that are torqued to 90 in. lbs. Remember this if you take it apart. The safety on mine was so noisey that I took a propane torch to the recoil spring to weaken it. You could hear the safety a mile away when released. Very pleased with mine.

    Thanks for reviewing the Mark AR 450 Bushmaster CDS scope, I couldn't find another review of this specific scope anywhere on YT! I'm considering this scope for my 450 BM, when you took the shots at 200 and 300 yards was it as easy as you made it look? You just dialed the turret to the correct yardage and connected on your first shot? Without having to “walk-in” the shots off-camera?

    I would definitely take a look at some modern 45/70 loads once you get over 300 grain the modern 45/70 owns the 450 bushmaster I have one of each a cva 45/70 with a 25 inch barrel and this same ruger American in 450 BM. I bought a box of factory hornady 325 grain 45/70 lever evolution ammo and it is moving at 2050 FPS at the muzzle with 3032 ftlbs of energy. 1729fps at 100 yards with 2158 ftlbs, 1450fps at 200 yards at 1516 ftlbs of energy and these factory loads don’t even begin to touch the power of a hand loaded modern 45/70. The 450 bushmaster matches performance of the 45/70 up to about 300 grain bullets and is just hardly more aerodynamic than the 45/70’s .458 bullet vs the 450 BM .452 bullet. I would much rather take a 405 grain 45/70 load against a buffalo than a 250 grain 450 BM

    • @braddaley1255
      @braddaley1255 4 года назад +2

      when you handload the bushmaster up in the ruger it laughs at anything you can put thru the 45/70. You can safely seat the bullets out more with more powder heaps more grunt. lol

    $899?!?! My goodness. That same gun is $499USD. Now, the same scope retails around $300 here in the states. What on earth is the cost for it in Australia? Also, 450 Bushmaster ammo is also only about $1.65/round here for the Hornady FTX.

    • @EMASTER118
      @EMASTER118 5 лет назад +1

      From what I just checked anywhere between AU$580-620, the basic rule of thumb is that whatever a firearm, ammunition or accessory costs in the USA, here it will cost double that at least in dollar value. Equivalent price when taking exchange rates into account would have the rifle costing US$635 and the optic costing US$434 -_-

    Pretty sure .45-70 has way more power than 450 Bushmaster.
    Buffalo Bore has a 350gr .45-70 load putting down 3,591ftlbs.
    450 Bushmaster is 2,500 or so with a similar weight 360gr bullet.
    .45-70 has a lot more case capacity.

    • @Tro1086
      @Tro1086 4 года назад

      450 BM is really only similar to 45-70 in its original power loadings, and factory loads made safe for any rifle, like original 45-70 rifles or replicas. Once you get into loads made for modern action 45-70, especially things like the Ruger #1, the 450 BM isnt even close. 450 BM is loaded rather weak thou because its mainly designed for AR rifles and the bolts cant take the power that a bolt-action can take. If you hand load the 450 BM for a good bolt action like this Ruger Ranch you can get quite a bit more power out of it and still have perfectly safe pressures for the gun. The same exact action in the Ruger is also used for stuff like 300 Win Mag, so it can take a lot more than a 450 BM.

    I’ve never played with this cartridge so my opinion is probably more or less pointless.
    That said, I’m going to share it anyway so scroll on if you don’t like pointless opinions.
    My 30/06 and .300 WM both cost the same to feed - about $1.75 per trigger pull. I haven’t weighed either rifle but both of mine are pretty light, I’d guess at 3-4kg, and I’d be pretty comfortable shooting just about anything on offer in our great land down under with either one ... well, I probably wouldn’t have a crack at any of those big bloody Cape buffalo with the 30/06 (if I ever even get the chance to hunt them).
    Each to their own though! And of course, I’d happily have a crack at shooting a 450 for fun. It’s just that at this point I can’t really think of any reason I’d want to buy one myself. Not at $3 a shot!

    It's amazing that rifle companies still selling firearms with single stack magazines in Australia. Annoying as fuck. Thank heavens for after market manufacturer's. In saying that it also depends on what part of the country your living talking to sales reps like in Vic no problems with the stock stand mags supplied but NSW Qld we like multiple magazine's it all comes down to the type of hunting/ feral eradication we do.
