I watch these lessons, as I said, for a few reasons. One, it never hurts to watch a lesson like this no matter how long you've been playing or how good you *THINK* you are on drums... because there's always gold to be mined from any lesson. But I really honestly just watch these to watch you play in most cases. You enjoy jazz drumming so much and your grooves, even the instructional ones, are always so nice and have so much emotion. Which is hard to do in a tutorial. Kudos.
In college in 2005 I had a weekly drum lesson with the great bass player Tom Kennedy. He basically had me break it down to hours of quarter notes A-day with a metronome and it improved my time and feel tremendously. I would do 15 minutes at various tempos each for about 2 or 3 hours every day... The quarter notes swinging without the extra notes. Just play quarter notes.
The perfect educational YT video, Q. Bravo. I’m definitely going to play along with this later. We don’t need to be hit over the head with “like and subscribe” and banners to remind us. We want this to be financially successful for you, because we want you to keep coming back, so it’s totally cool that you offer complimentary product along with your videos, people come back for the content, not because you tell them to. And your instruction is pure gold. Wish you were teaching out of Boston, I’d love to sign up for some in-person sessions! You know… we do have a couple institutions up here!
Excellent fun exercise Mr Quincy . Seemingly simple but so effective. Bravo I could write an essay (book think🧐🤭) on how I have to review & change my bass drum technique 😂. While all the fun is on the upbeat having the reference on the downbeat the 1/4 note ( felt but not heard downbeat) & cymbal etc mc. Partials 😋 🙏
Hi Quincy ! I’m a quite young (I’m 33 actually but I think it’s a young age for Jazz :D) drummer from south of France, I’v been following your lessons since your beginning ones, so maybe 6 or 7 years now and I coudn’t tell how much helpful and enlightning your tips and advices have been and still are for me. So thousands of thanks to you for this marvellous teaching content, and for your good and inspiring vibes 😌
Good explanation and practice technique. The quarter-note ride is a solid tool for working with singers, especially when the music needs to pull or push for an accented bar or two without actually changing the tempo of the band.
The new drums sound great! You could make a set of coffee cans sound great though, so...Great lesson, I downloaded the bass tracks and they are really helpful, the really super slow ones are killing me though!
Thanks for breaking down swing feel with a logical explanation of what each of the body parts should be doing. I’ll try to incorporate your ideas into my practice routine.
Love this site. Such Excellent lessons. Some ideas: ‘ keep solid 2&4 on Hhat..I play heel up..’ have brief inset/ sectional camera view showing floor view of your Hhat foot technique. And in your gear list showing types & sizing of drums & cymbals add which drumsticks you are using in vid. Thank you for such Awesome playing & instruction.
Seriously, Q, possibly the best breakdown lesson I've come across for "self taught" young cats who are just trying to figure out this music. REQUEST: Will you do an advanced lesson on developing your dialogue between the kick and snare in (really) up-tempo swing?
Hey, nice lesson! What I do that complements this exercise is what my teacher calls "Rhythmic preparatory". Consists on playing the DB, HH and right hand in the feeling you wanna give to the song (swing, bossa nova, Rhumba, etc.) and then add the left hand in the quarter notes for 2 bars, then the upbeat for 2 bars. After that, you play through all the 8th notes in order, 2 bars each. When u master it, play 2 8th notes, then 3, etc. Hope I explained myself properly xD ^^
Congratulations on new drums fine company my good friend TB now with Ludwig use to be AR etc at Tama as well new cell# for me its been awhile been sick and have been having on going phone problems great lesson hope to be playing again soon and send donation to you as well thank you
Great lesson as usual Mr QD. This will also help me get better at improvising my comping on the snare and bass. I generally have a few go to's when comping but this should help me be a little more creative.
Hello Quincy super drummer ! Thank you very much for your lessons, tricks on jazz drumming. Always interesting. Is it possible to purchase your stick somewhere in Canada? Thank you
I found if you want a better chick from the high hat to either hit it very flat footed or rock the foot back-and-forth (foot stays on pedal always so you're not smashing it down with so much weight and it's squeezing less. Lewis Nash taught me, If you're playing the ride pattern on the high hat opening and closing it like a big band feel, only close the high hat on the twos and four's and make the other 2 notes with the high hat open.
Great lesson as always Q! Lately my biggest challenge has been my shoulders automatically getting stiff and tense whenever I'm playing or practicing. Do you think you could talk about ways to practice better relaxation at the drumkit?
hey Quincy firstly your a great jazz bebop player, I brought some playalongs off you , will be buying more.hey do you always feather the bass on every beat or just some times , I see jazz players do it and sometimes not do it , why do you implement it opposed to not doing it does it reinforce the time etc!
Very nice Q. Funny how it can require more focus to unswing. I do appreciate the classification and distinguished pulse. And the greats done said, it don’t mean a thing…..😂
Nice lesson How do you feel about conceptualizing the subdivision as triplets? As different from “dialing it in” without a specific metric subdivision? Listening here you do end up with a nice triplet division
Absolutely! But the point of this lesson (I could have been clearer with the purpose) is that at slow to medium tempos, there are lots of places we can place those up beats not limited to a true triplet. Thanks for watching!
I love how the "bassist" quits as if to say "What the heck you doin man??" Hey Q, I have a real question. If you're heel-up on the hi-hat, 2 and 4, what is that left leg doing on 1 and 3? From the camera view it looks like you're moving it.

I appreciate your kind words B! I certainly do love music and being blessed to be able to play it AND share it with others.
Agree he's a jazz drummer king .
Brilliant... clear, practical and supportive lessons. You are a great player and teacher.
The Tamas always sound great! Fun lesson 🙂 These types of exercises are really enjoyable!
Thanks bro TC! Yes, these types of exercises are definitely fun and kind of recalibrate things.
You’ve helped my feel so much night n day the past year
Awesome Kirby!!
Nice lesson to really "feel" the time better-appreciate your lessons on a Monday especially
Thanks as always for watching David!
Crispy clean😊🧁Like it😊Quarter notes up beats sub divisions quite a ride you're taking us on🥁👌
Right on Peter👊🏾
Great lesson, you make it look so easy....indeed also applicable to other instruments!

Right on Timmy👊🏾. Thnx
I have a Starclassic kit, and love it.

Hi Bass drum cam and view in top corner so we can see that sweet feathering. Fantastic Teacher, Thank you!
Good idea Marcus!

Right on Chucky👊🏾
I second that on the coffee cans sentiment. Boom 👊
Thanks Q! Great lesson to help iron out any swing creases and playing with the bass makes you feel part of the music (so much better than a metronome)
Thanks Michael!
Swing dial! Very cool. Makes a violinist consider rhythm in a different way. Your drums look and of course sound great. 👍
Thank you Ms. KT:)
I liked your format as is. A lot of wisdom you drop and your playing is inspiring. Thanks sharing your knowledge and your creativity. 🥁
Thanks!
Tremendous lesson 🥰🥰🥰
This was explained so well! Excellent job and thank you!
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for breaking down swing feel with a logical explanation of what each of the body parts should be doing.

You are very welcome!
Love these lessons Mr Q, they make me feel like I’m getting somewhere, thank you✌️🌻
Thanks Markie. You’ve been watching my lessons for a long time so I know you are definitely getting somewhere my friend :-)

Appreciate that Chad!

Very kind of you Nick. I’ll do another up tempo comping video soon. Thnx

Hello Quincy super drummer ! Thank you very much for your lessons, tricks on jazz drumming. Always interesting. Is it possible to purchase your stick somewhere in Canada? Thank you
Thank you for your interest. Check to see if my friend James Danderfer has any left to sell. He lives in Friday and you can find him on Instagram.
God damn, thank you

Feathering! You might say that is a hit or miss challenge for me. I didn’t think it was a big thing. Oh but it is.
Good play on words Angelo👍🏾
Nice drums!!! 😎
Thanks Jordan!
Great lesson as always Q! Lately my biggest challenge has been my shoulders automatically getting stiff and tense whenever I'm playing or practicing. Do you think you could talk about ways to practice better relaxation at the drumkit?
Absolutely! Tension is something we drummers always have to try and stay clear of.
Great lesson but unclear to me which play along I should download. Please provide specific name so I download correct one. Thanks again.
The 30 minute play along is great. Thanks Carol!
hi Quincy
I bought JAZZ VOCABULARY PHRASES .
Is there a video of all this?
No sir. Maybe down the road I’ll do one.
hey Quincy firstly your a great jazz bebop player, I brought some playalongs off you , will be buying more.hey do you always feather the bass on every beat or just some times , I see jazz players do it and sometimes not do it , why do you implement it opposed to not doing it does it reinforce the time etc!
I've subscribed too , btw your teachings is going to take my jazz bebop playing to the next level.
Thanks Brent. I feather on every beat to add more inaudible bottom to each beat.
You’re doing this and talking at the same time!! 🤯🤯🤯RESPECT
Not easy but doing these lessons has forced me to get better at it. Thanks Eli!
when do you choose to play quarter note ride?and when do you choose to play skip beat?
You have to just feel it Brent. No set rule on that.
@@drumqtips thanks bro

I want to buy the bass play along track, but don't know which one it is. If you're reading this Quincy, please give me a little direction.
Look for the ride cymbal workout products using the link in the description.
hi quincy , what drumsticks do you use in this lesson?
Check the description box.
I love how the "bassist" quits as if to say "What the heck you doin man??"
Hey Q, I have a real question. If you're heel-up on the hi-hat, 2 and 4, what is that left leg doing on 1 and 3? From the camera view it looks like you're moving it.
My heal incidentally taps the pedal plate on Beats 1 & 3 for slow tempos. Up tempos it stays suspended and my leg just bounces to the beat.
Tap your feet, bop your head and be you.
Right on Peter!
Judging by the size of your head, I'm guessing that's a.... 72" ride.
Good one👍🏾
