I play guitar , and love secular guitar oriented music , Hard Rock/Metal as a matter of fact. Major chords and keys tend to get boring and very "VANILLA" sounding. There have been a handful of times that I’ve shown up to rehearsal (not having heard the songs yet) and and I sit behind the kit and the MD tells me to count it off and I do, not knowing what I’m supposed to play, and I go into that Tom groove and I don’t think that I’ve been wrong yet.
Rob you are like the big brother, father, uncle, I never had, over the few years I’ve watched you. mentor I guess is the word. Keep up the good work my friend!

I didn’t enjoy it either when starting but learned that toms are primarily used since they have a less harsh backbeat that is suitable for house of worship mix. Doesn’t mean we can’t change up the groove. The first one gave me “tejano vibe” which should liven it up

It starts with the tom groove and at the first chorus the beat suddenly stops, then the tom groove starts again and then the 8th note build in the bridge, it’s like eveyone just want to following the same recipie.

The thing with that beat - and it's equivalents - is that one is waiting for the song to really start. Till those toms stop, and the snare starts, and it really starts to roll. I like your variations a lot though. I'm a guitarist by the way so why care about what I think anyway :)

Another thing I used to do to avoid getting stuck in the rut of “that” groove, when I was a worship drummer, was play a 16th note groove on the floor toms at a low dynamic level, and use the rack toms, and the cymbals to accent the melody the keys were playing.

This is true. I will say that this particular accent pattern has great forward momentum

    a lot in Christian music.

Started playing worship drums some 20ish years ago, and I'm not sure I've ever once played that pattern. Similar things, sure. But not that. Maybe there's a particular subset of songs that this particular accent pattern is from, or maybe it's an artifact of trying to translate parts intended for a 6-piece kit onto a 5-piece, but most songs I played with tom-heavy parts did not at all call for that many 12" tom accents. I can definitely see why people would find it annoying though.
