    Today we create an awesome aquarium that will eventually be a betta fish sorority tank! This will be a tank for multiple female betta fish. When keeping betta fish, its important to ensure:
    1.) Lots of live plants!
    2.) Temperature ~78 - 82 F
    3.) A lid to prevent jumping!
    4.) Adequate filtration
    5.) If the fish has large fins, no sharp decorations!
    If you follow the above, then many of the common betta fish issues such as fin rot and other health problems will easily be avoided.

      That's how most sororities end.
      I have ome in a 20g with 5 females and dither fish.
      It was going well until one of the young females reached maturity and was constantly challenging the older matriarch. I decided to be proactive and separated most of them before it became a blood bath.
      That female was one of my fiesty females. She constantly hunted and preferred live food, would flare a lot, and couldnt have tank mates because she was overly aggressive. Honestly I miss that fish. She was pretty cool.

      Thank you for your story, too many beginners will just say my bettas are fine, then film their tanks when they first put the bettas together on the first day or a week. But with sororities, problems arrive a week plus later, a couple weeks, and sometimes a couple months. Long term wise, betta sororities unless done right(big tank, lots of plants and wood) usually lead to dead or wounded bettas and a shorter life span.

      I set up my tank days before going to get them so the water settled, everything was clean etc etc
      But they didn’t have any females left, so I got a beautiful male. He’s blue/green and has a reddish face with red front fins and he’s already so happy to have his space to swim around in 😍
      I’ve had a male before, so i know how to take care of them, just watching these videos for somewhat entertainment/making sure I’m doing what I need to do, right
      But I’m SO glad I didn’t go with the 2 females, for my sized tank. And I already love Azul (that’s why I named him 😊)

      I thought that but if there's 11g and 4 fish that's over the 2.5g per fish minimum and getting them from an already established sorority will also help reduce the risk of aggression. The wood etc will also block easy line of sight so they should be ok.
      I did say in my comment that usually a sorority is 6+ to minimise aggression and gave a few tips on sororities but with a bit of luck this one should be ok. If not I have asked Mike to still document it as that can be more useful than all the videos showing a happy, calm sorority that so many people refer to when trying to argue those of us who have thoroughly researched or actually had sororities saying that aggression can be as big a problem with females as it is with males.

    • @AgitatedGhost
      @AgitatedGhost 4 года назад +8

      Littlewings - females really should have 5 gallons each because you are taking aggressive fish and putting them in a tank and hoping for the best. For such aggressive fish you can’t just go with the bare minimum for one fish. Some keepers say that the more females the less aggressive they are but I disagree. From my research and personal experience it’s better to keep them in odd numbers to help establish a proper hierarchy within the tank.

    You really shouldn’t put any more than 1 bettas in a tank that is the size you are using. Sororities should be in no smaller than a 20 gallon tank with no less than 5 girls. Please consider upgrading or getting separate tanks. One last thing not only will there probably be aggression but also the amount of fish in the tank will have a large bio load. So you’ll have to keep on top of water changes in order to have decent parameters.

    the minimum recommended tank size for a sorority is a 20 gallon long (although imo it should be a 40 breeder or larger) and at LEAST 6 females, although 8-10+ is ideal.
    with 3 or 4 there isnt a lot of space to spread aggression and you’re going to have issues. just my 2¢ i guess.

      @@dianavelez1262 I'm two years late for a reply here, but I wouldn't recommend buying or using baby betas. Baby betas struggle to survive after being sold because of their already compromised immune system and the stress associated with shipping and transfers. And baby betas are almost impossible to gender accurately, the retailers may say baby boy or baby girl beta but they are entirely guessing and even if you buy all baby girls the chances of all of them actually being female is incredibly low. It's probably too late for me to be of help telling you this but hopefully by now all is well and your interest in betas was met somehow C:

    I think that it is very tempting to start a sorority. The females are beautiful and bettas are addictive but I really really would advise against putting females together even in a 30+ gallon aquarium. One thing I learned from a sorority is that the fish may appear to be coexisting but they are in a constant state of stress. They will get sick and the illness will rip through the sorority. I think you will have many issues with putting more than one betta in this size tank. Sorry to be a debbie downer, it sucks to have an unsuccessful sorority. It ends badly. Beautiful tank!!

    Beautiful setup. I have a sorority tank also. 14gal with 5 females all from space city but not from the sorority section. They are doing wonderfully. Tip: when acclimating release the least aggressive first and wait until they stop flaring then release another. Take your time releasing them. Your tank has a lot of decorations that will brake the line of sight.

  • @dragon6irl

    I think a better option would be to get a pair of betta mahachaiensis, as they can coexist much more reliably than a typical betta sorority. Even if the fish you had in mind live together now, you know changing the environment can shift the whole dynamic. Doesn't matter how perfect the setup is, it's only a matter of time before one kills another, and then its anarchy. (I speak from experience, I had a sorority for almost a year. I try to share what I learned wherever I can.)

  • @shesellsfish
    @shesellsfish 4 года назад +38

    From everything I've read, studied, and the folks who are doing it have told me...you really need to have more space for each female to have a territory. It seems like your tank is too small for that. That being said, I really hope this works out for you and the fish. Looking forward to updates on what happens, success or not.

    I used to be enamoured with the concept of sorority tanks. I am not any longer, people have done studies with the amount of fish and size of tank and coverage, and although large tanks with heavy coverage produced very little deaths, the fish were constantly stressed because of the close proximity. I don't believe sororities produce healthy happy fish, and although I respect a lot of what you do, this I can't watch.

  • @Littlewings1211
    @Littlewings1211 4 года назад +3

    This is a good video about bettas, the only thing I would add is that sororities are not recommended for novice betta keepers due to the difficulties you mentioned. Even with just the move together they can be very territorial over their new space so you may have a few issues of aggression. As with adding a betta to any established aquarium always have as many standby tanks as you have betta fish just in case you do need to separate them as females can be as aggressive as males.
    Also, if your bettas are not coming from a previously established sorority it is recommended to get a minimum of 6 fish with 2.5-3g minimum per fish. Use plants and hidey-hole decorations/natural hiding spots to break up areas into different territories, eg each fish area has plants and a hide so they don't need to fight for anything they need and this reduces the need for aggressive behaviour too.
    Lastly, you (Mike) may find that the betta fish really enjoy laying on the floating plants. Bettas love large leaves near/on the surface to laze about on (bettas are very lazy fish 😂) so you may want to get more of that or get some zoomed leaf hammocks for them to lounge around on.
    Good luck with the sorority! Please still document it even if you do have issues with aggressive behaviour because it will be really useful to anyone wanting to set one up rather than all the videos that show a calm beautiful betta sorority with no issues lol!

    They like more flow than you think. Plus think that tank is a bit on the small size too. 6.5 is not super low. If you had added a bigger filter that has been running off an established tank, you would have been fine. True neutral is 6.8.

      David M I’m not using the brand listed in this video but the light will work based on the schedule that you already made. i have actually had a successful betta sorority in ten gallons, that only ended when a guppy that somehow jumped in from quarantine from a nearby tank introduced ich, but all this was still when i was a very new and i was lucky while it lasted, but i do agree it is still to small for a sorority. i now have another good sorority i a 20 gallon long that is going strong and has been for a few months now. :)

    Caustic ammonia in a slightly acidic environment. Not sure if plants can eat produced ammonium salts and/or aren't toxic toxic to fish but neutralization ("sorting itself out") seems reasonable

      Thoroughly Wet only females can but it’s extremely difficult to do a sorority and very stressful on the females if not done right. Most people that have researched and experience will put 5 females in a 20 gallon and that is the bare minimum for a sorority

    • @reeda5390
      @reeda5390 4 года назад +3

      also you have to make sure you get female betas with the right disposition cause an especially aggressive female will attack the others :/

    If I’m not mistaken Ammonia in low ph environments converts to ammonium which in most cases isn’t harmful to the fish so since your ph is so low that’s why you’re reading higher ammonia levels in the tank itself

    • @5_Star_Man
      @5_Star_Man 4 года назад +1

      Yes that's true for ph under 7. That's why saltwater and African cichlid tanks have to be very careful about ammonia

  • @jezackr3500

    All the advice about keeping the female bettas I keep seeing is that you need more than 5 of them and massive tank with a lot of decoration, meanwhile my two ladies living in their 5gal with a few shrimp get along perfectly. It depends on the temperament of the bettas in the end, some of them need 20gal and a big pack, but some of them don't.

    • @Punkimos
      @Punkimos 4 года назад +1

      Uh the bigger the tank the easier it is for you and the bettas. A 10-14 can get really out of balance due to the stock. “Some of them don’t need a 20 gallon” although this is true, they just swim around in that tank for the rest of their lives, everyday, same lap around the tank. In the wild their territories consist of 125 gallons big and more. Domesticated bettas usually tend to be way more aggressive opposed to their wild types, therefore space is recommended for greater success and less stress.

    • @jezackr3500
      @jezackr3500 4 года назад

      @@Punkimos well, of course, if I could afford it money and time-wise I'd keep them in a 50gal tank, but, as I said, it all depends on the character of the fish - mine are not stressed and deal well with one another, so a bigger tank is not necessary in as much as every fish would have a better life in as big of a tank as possible. I shared my example for people who can't go big from the beginning - 20gal and 8 bettas is a serious expense - that starting smaller doesn't have to lead to a catastrophe. A well planted and varied smaller tank can work just as well.

  • @bluemanpaul
    @bluemanpaul 4 года назад

    I've had a nightmare with transparent lids. Whether glass or acrylic they just accumulate too much condensation and can't be seen through which defeats the object of having a transparent lid.
    You might be better off looking at marine style mesh if you are concerned about jumping fish but my betta has never jumped from his tank. I keep the water line around an inch from the rim and that's far higher than he's ever tried when I've been spot feeding him
