This reminds me of when my sister was small. My godmother wanted to carry my sister (she was a week old) and my mom gave her my sister and she started crying. So my godmother passed her to my mom. Then they kept passing my sister between them. When my sister was in my moms or dads arms she was silent. With anyone else she cried. So my godmother made the joke. Look she has an on and off switch!

I just had this happen with some guppies I got from a pet store. I had 2 guppies for about 8 months, and I wanted more so I got 4 more. I fell in love. But 3 days later i noticed one had fin rot, started to treat and slowly lost all but 1, to a mystery illness, except for one who is the last one who is sick. I'd love to see how to properly quarantine, I am still learning fish keeping.

Cory cats when stressed put out a toxin to keep from being eaten could that be what happened to your fish

    • @annethornton9938
      @annethornton9938 4 года назад +26

They can when under extreme stress, but I'm fairly sure that just 6 in a 125 gal wouldn't have been the cause. Lack of QT is much more likely, many corys are wild caught and who knows what they could be bringing into your tank...

    • @jamielynn7674

That would be a stronger case if they were in a very small aquarium. The volume of water vs the number of corys make me think its probably not it.

I started using my 5 gallon to put my new fish into before they go into the big tank. I am glad you did make this video to remind all fish keepers dont rush good fish keeping as one simple oversight because you rushed to get a perfect looking tank can have disastrous consequences. And we have all been guilty at one time or another. Sometimes every thing goes well but the odds are stacked against you unless their you own fish. Buying new fish from any fish store is Russia roulette and placing them straight away into a tank as you never know were those fish came from or how they were cared for. Even nets, water buckets and general maintenance equipment can cause transmission of deadly virus and bacteria from one tank to another. Sterilization of that equipment between tank is very important. And if possible seperate equipment for each tank and only for that tank. Rushing maintenance of you tanks without proper precautions is just as bad as new fish. And make sure you quarantine tanks and maintenance Equipment is always kept seperate from you display and breeder tanks. It is possible to wipe out a whole fish room because you were hasty in you fish maintenance and introducing new fish. It can create a huge amount of additional work to correct your mistakes you could have easily avoided. The time, the loss of animal life, the addition work and the financial cost losses all because of the lack of being responsible, which could have been more than enough money to set up several new tanks or buy additional maintenance equipment 6depending on the quality and types of fish you can lose.
Thanks for you honesty and a great reminder for us all to slow down and be more responsible for the animals and marine life we keep.
But nevertheless I am so sorry for you loss. I know you could kick your self in the backside for being impatient but remember you channel is to teach people how to keep aquarium and this is one of those lessons we all need to remember. So thanks again for share it with us all. I know you feel bad but it is a mistake as fish keepers we all have made at one time or another but it hard when it happens and as we feel so bad at many levels because we knew better to begin with and we were impatient. But after it happens we have to pick ourselves back up wiser from the situation and move on a a hard lesson learned or relearned.

Had a similar experience. I have a 125 community tank filled with 6 types of rainbows, Tanzanian cichlids, Angel's, assorted cories, and plecos. My son caught a baby large mouth bass in a minnow trap and wanted to show me. Well he put it in the 125( it was the same size as a neon) and forgot. By the time I got back from serving overseas(2 weeks). It was too late

Oh no! That's so sad. 😔
When I set up this tank, my original fish went to my LFS for a holiday while I made sure it was cycled properly. They were all super healthy when they came back so I had intended to get more a fortnight later as I was confident they'd be ok without quarantine as they'd been living in the same system.
Long story short, my whole family got sick just after I got my fish back and by the time I was organised enough to get more fish, too much time had passed for me to feel comfortable skipping quarantine (and I don't have room for 2 tanks). So, my little gang are living their best fishy life in 33 gallons of luxury. 🤣

On a side note I love my cory cats. They help to keep my tanks clean.
On a side side note, and one that’s beyond the point, as someone just past a year in this hobby I’d rather see a slowly released video series instead of something put on fast.

Awww, Lisa, I'm SOOO sorry! We've all known that excitement of getting a new fish in the tank, and sometimes our heart wins out over our heads! I've learned to QT even my inverts and my plants, thankfully due to youtubers like yourself more than direct losses. I'd just been rewatching your 'Top 10 mistakes of RUclips fishkeepers" series, and thinking over my worst mistakes as next month marks my first year back in the hobby-first as an adult. (Went from 1x 10 gallon that my dad bought used in 1970!, to 13 tanks now active and 8 more that will be set up by Christmas!!!). My biggest mistake was probably buying those dozen cardinal tetras from a store a few hours away, and trusting the store to sell me healthy fish and know what they were doing as they bagged them up for me for the long trip home. Lost 11 out of 12 of them, most of them in the first few days, either because they didn't get enough air in their bags or they were sick with something that never became obvious or diagnosable. One bag of six was noticeably paler than the other, and definitely less air at the top-both had way too much water and too little air for a trip of more than half an hour, much less 4-5 hours as I've since learned :( The tank had been cycled for months, tested weekly (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, a trace of nitrate, and pH which should have been well within the safe range), had 2 different species successfully QT'd and another happily housed in that time frame, had been fully scaped & planted out, with time for the substrate to mature and the plants to root properly--in short, the tank was perfect and ready to go. It was devastating, and my attempts at treatment caused further losses (plants which didn't like Kanaplex, apparently), and forced me to rehome some fish, and neglect other projects (namely, some nice/pricy plants which didn't get planted out properly that I'd bought from another, better store in the same city). Even our initial, complete ignorance of the nitrogen cycle hadn't been as fatal to our fish as the mess that fish store sent me home with. Thank goodness my QT contained it to that single tank & species!!

I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart broke watching the video. I'm fairly new to the hobby (COVID hobby turned MTS). It is helpful, sadly, to have an expert make a mistake. A good lesson for the rest of us. Also, what was most helpful was the description of your reaction-general cure and water changes. I was waiting for the salt. As a newby it is soooo hard to figure out good advice on disease from bad advice. I've killed a lot of fish listening to bad advice.
(Btw, my dream tank is Betta sorority. I love the females, they are a lot more active and interesting!) Please keep posting. It would be awesome to have a video on the actual steps of buying, quarantining, the small groups and such. Not a lot info online about the sororities.

So I just got 3 lovely female bettas today. Still getting the tank ready at the moment but I wonder if I should keep them temporarily in their cup containers to make sure none of them are sickly? They seem happy and healthy and are very active. Also I would like any tips on how to introduce them to the tank once it’s ready. I have their cups near each other and they don’t seem aggressive towards each other. Just waiting for the tank to cycle through. It’s going to be just them 3 so I got a big enough tank so they can have their own space. They are pretty girls. One is mostly white with red flame like tips on her fins and the others are solid blue and purple which is pretty amazing considering that they are female.

I had a tropical tank that I had been establishing for almost five years. Had about a dozen fish in it. Made the same mistake of not quarantining, and within a week ALL but a single fish had died of ich. I'm not new to keeping aquariums either...big lesson I had to learn

I know this is an old thread but just want to tell you that you have motivated me to create a betta sorority tank and I have the ladies' future home cycling now. I also have a tank with a few ryukins and wanted to add a moor. I found one that was beautiful, fat, and active. I decided it was best to quarantine due to watching your videos and not wanting to risk my ryukins. I started with General Cure and within 1 day that moor passed 2 tape worms (that I saw) and then began to develop ich!!!! So glad I did not take a chance! I have never wormed my fish in the past and wonder how many I have had that transferred worms. Odd, since I always worm all my other newly acquired animals (dogs, cats, horse, goats, chickens). I will definitely treat...and quarantine... all new fish as a precaution from here on. BTW, I also wormed the ryukins since they never have been treated and they were fine. Whew!

Bummer... Yep sadly fish can pick up a disease and not even show symptoms until they are sold and in your tank.
Hard habit to keep 100% of the time....but yes...quarantining is critical. Good video.

So sorry Lisa! The same thing happened to my betta sorority after adding Cory cats. Weird, because that was in 2012. I ordered the bettas online, but bought the corys from my nearby Petco. I was more worried that the imports would have a disease, but it was the corys who all died within a week, then each betta died 😞

Hey Lisa! I'm treating my beta with aquarium salt and changing the water daily like you said but this morning, I did a test from my test kit and I now have an AMMONIA spike that looks like a 4 ppm. The NITRITE is blue so thats 0 and the NITRATE is reading about a 5.0 ppm. does this mean its cycling? I added about 2.5 ml of AMMO LOCK because I was worried about the high ammonia level. I'm gonna go ahead and keep changing the water daily. I try to vacuum the bottom thoroughly so idk why the ammonia is so high. do you have any suggestions???

I just added 4 juvenile females to my 14 gallon cube with my 1 female that i have had for a while. There are also 7 neon tetras and 3 black neon tetras... My original female is acting very aggressive towards all the fish. The 10 tetras have been in this tank for about 6 months. I added all the females at once, even the one i had for a while. I'm beginning to think this was a mistake and may return the 4 juvenile females i purchased. I hate to do that, but I want them to be happy. Its only been 1 day. I'm gonna give it 3 days to see if they settle in. Thanks KG for all of your videos... I definitely credit some of my success to you guys ... And my OCD 😂😂

How big should the quarantine be in proportion to the tank they will be living in? Should it be the same size, or is it okay if its smaller? But by how much?

I recently lost my rescue betta fish and one of my Cory catfish within one day.. My Cory was fairly new to the tank (about two weeks) he was a green Cory. I also got a peppered Cory. They were schooling together and literally everything was fine. I don’t believe my green Cory was killed by any of the other fish in the tank. Everything had been fine for two weeks! I think maybe he was just sick? I’m not sure. As for my betta he was hiding then he moved and I saw that the top half of his fins were GONE. He was very sad and didn’t swim or eat. I thought he would survive since he survived months of abuse from his previous owner. Unfortunately he didn’t and my heart broke. He meant the actual world to me. I nursed him back to Health. I miss him so much. It breaks my heart not knowing what happened. My best guess is that he got stuck in a decoration or he got in a fight with the other fish (which I don’t know if I believe that cause he had already been with them for awhile). I also did a filter change a few days before. Which I’m not sure either if it had an impact. It’s already been about 5 days and I have a feeling of emptiness in my heart. Fish and pets in general are so amazing. They instantly mean so much to you.

Sorry for your loss... I know not only the bettas, but also the ember tetras, were special to you. Thanks for being honest about what happened so that newcomers into the hobby can learn about what not to do. I had something similar happen twice - First time I got cardinal tetras for my guppy tank and didn't quarantine them... 24 hours later they were covered in ich - they all survived that experience, but it caused me tons of guilt and stress. Second time... my shrimp tank I am setting up... I quarantined the plants, but not the rocks and I forgot to scrub my Java Fern... well now I have a leech in that tank that I gotta figure out how to catch -_- and I got snails... the snails I don't mind as much (I was going to add MTS anyways) as I want to get a Pea Puffer and this I actually want a culture of bladder snails, but I will probably remove the ramshorn as the ramshorns in my 29 gallon had a population boom, outcompeted my bladder snails, then suddenly crashed with dead snails everywhere.

Yup, I learned the hard way with this too.. quarantine is ALWAYS worth it. You might be fine many times of just adding new fish, but that ONE time is all it takes to wipe out your entire stock, its heartbreaking! I almost tore all my tanks down & quit the hobby completely I was so frustrated & devastated. Needless to say, I am still in the hobby & now I QUARANTINE and ALWAYS have 2 extra 10g running for quarantine & for a medical tank if I get sick fish. Great video! We all make mistakes & that's how we learn!
    God Bless! ❤

I want to ask you guys a question and it's not about the subject of this video.. It's been a few years since I last kept fish.. For many years I used an under gravel filter with all the tube holes capped except one.. I used a power head on the 1 tube.. When I did a water change and used a vacuum, I only pushed the tube about a half an inch down into the gravel.. So, the entire gravel bed was a biological filter.. I have never heard about anyone else doing this and just wanted your opinions about it..

I'd recommend putting your fish in an ice cream bucket or a normal 5 gallon bucket with water obviously and put a cup of your tank water in every 15 minutes it gets them acclimated to your water ( don't dump the water from the bucket in your tank ) tank a net and put them in your aquarium.
