Thank you! I rescued two severely neglected female Bettas a couple of months ago , they've made it so far and I've been wondering what tankmates would be compatible with them. I've never really wanted a betta, but when I saw these 2 poor fish in an empty house I was cleaning to get ready for sale, I just couldn't let them continue to suffer so I brought them home. 💕👍

I’d recommend snails first as a “test buddy”. They’re tough, non-aggressive, and cheap. Bettas won’t usually bother them, but if they do at least you’ll know how social the betta is before you waste money on other fish.

my betta does better with fish than a snail. the snail was slow and didn't fight back. he nipped off the antenna. The fish, though he does chase them, they are fast and can hide/break line of sight. he hasn't messed up any fishy fins lol

If your considering buying a group of kuhli loaches just get ready for them to be your favorite fish. Little guys are fun to watch swim around.

I assume that so long as you have a well-fitting lid without noticeable gaps, the water perimeters are nice, and there’s no extreme cases of aggression/stress (so the loaches don’t have a reason to try and escape), it should be okay.

Kuhlis are my favorite fish. Such fun personalities. They love zooming around the tank and crashing into everyone. They get along phenomenally with my African Dwarf Frogs. The Kuhlis and my frogs both play together in the bubbles from my air stone and they snuggle together. What I also love about Kuhli Loaches is they don’t bother anyone. They aren’t aggressive at all. I’m cycling a 20 gallon tall right now with hopes of moving my male Betta into it because he’s currently in a small tank. I really want to put some Kuhli Loaches in there. I’ve heard that African dwarf frogs can also mesh with a betta. I still want to do more research on that though. I don’t want to be impulsive with my tank selections.

My betta is a.... unique... fish.
He likes to bury himself in substrate... so I changed to smooth marble so he wouldn't keep damaging his fins. He also sought out every firmish stem plant....
So now he has silicone imitation anemones, glass marbles, and duckweed with a gentle waterfall inducing filtration system (the betta likes to 'ride the water slide)....and ghost shrimp. The shrimp like to ride on the bettas back (ride 'em cowboy🤔) and eat the algae.
Finally, his tail is growing back.

  • @forsak3th
    @forsak3th 3 года назад +87

Make sure you know its personality or be ready to keep a close watch on the tank. I thought my little guy would be fine with others because he had a bad eye when I got him. I thought perhaps this would impair his ability to hunt and therefore I could keep him with others. Turns out he is the one eyed red devil. After decapitating many shrimps and eaten endlers later I learned my lesson. I thought maybe snails? The harden shell of the nerile might live to tell the tale. This however was not the case and they too met their demise. My red one eye plakat betta now swims a 6 gallon long tank with only plants to keep him company. He also randomly attacks the thermostat quite often now to get his aggression out. Still love the little guy!

He is interested in everyone and likes to go around and calmly observe everyone and even has a few friends that he’s often with. He’ll eat with everyone even the corydoras at the bottom sometimes. He’s never poofed up even once and even shares his betta log with the frogs where you can often see them just laying on each other. He interacts with me a lot top. When I told my lfs that I was purchasing my Betta for a community tank, she looked at me as if I was crazy lol. She said that it would be a menace in there (47 gallon UNS loaded with plants) and that they were called "fighting fish" for a reason. Having been in the reefing game for nearly two decades I was worried about the opposite, in that his fins would likely be getting nipped as my first concern. I put him in with lots of other community type species and all was well from day 1. With my experience I'd say Bettas may very well be the most underrated fish in the fish game. Not only are the colors insane, the price for even the most colorful and exotic is basically pennies compared to saltwater. Great personality in a planted tank as well, interacting with the plants is fun to watch.

I recommend long fin danios (Long Fin Slows Them Down) whether that be Zebra Danio, Leopard Danio, or Normal Finned Celestial Pearl Danios. Stir away from Giant danios as they get a little overwhelming for the betta. They can be nippers but with the long fins they have a hard time getting those fins.
id also recommend Platy's specifically The Marigold Platy, This type of platy I find to be extremely hardy (more so the males as the females are harrased and usually die about 5-6 weeks in) so Maby have just 1 Male Marigold platy ( and 3 females if you want to be risky).

Your video was great timing for me as I bought a male Half Moon Betta 3 days ago and added it to a small 36 liter (~9.5 US gallons?) tank which has just 3 male Endlers (with small tails). I have had the 3 Endlers in there for about 7 months. So far so good with the betta. He doesn't go for them at all so far. They really kept their distance for ~24 hours because I guess they have never been in a tank with a much larger fish before. So I was really glad to see Endlers in your top 10 tank mates! Hopefully that holds true for my smaller type tank too. I'm hoping that things stay peaceful even when he tunes into feeding time. At the moment the little guys are getting most of the food and he gets the idea after a while. When he knows the feeding routine better, I hope he lets them get some without any violence. Thanks again, your videos are great.

I had a female Betta in a community tank and everyone did great, but she died very rapidly of overeating. It was really sad. It was impossible to feed the other fish without her scooping up everything she could in an eye blink, I could not stop her from doing so. I wish someone could make a video about how to get around this problem.

This would probably be a pain and stressful to the betta... but maybe get a small cup every morning scoop the betta in the cup when it comes up to eat and feed the other fish then put it back

I know it's an old comment, but maybe my comment could help someone else. I've seen some people get one of those floating Betta logs and they feed their Betta through the hole of that. If the Betta is busy eating there, throw other food away from the log and maybe other fish can get a chance to eat then.

I like the idea of developing a tank with a balance between live bearers, egg layers and a Betta [or some other show fish] - I think there is something natural about fish consuming fry or eggs for sustenance. I used to be squeamish about seeing a fish eat a fry but got past that - yet I would not go as far as having mature guppies or goldfish be feeder fish for larger predators. Sound weird?

I'm thinking of getting back into making an aquarium. My last aquarium included a Betta and surprisingly a red fin shark. They got along pretty well. I was gifted some guppies from a classroom tank when I was helping my stepmother clean out her classroom. Those things had babies and those babies had babies and so on. The guppies served as the primary food source for the tank and the guppies got flakes. Unfortunately I introduced another fish that I got as a gift a little algae eater. That turned out to be sick and the fish quickly died from the sickness. I was pretty attached to the Betta and Red fin so it was a tough loss.
